elson Mandela Metropolitan University’s ViceChancellor’s Scholarships will make the dreams of 30 top-achieving first-year students – including the Eastern Cape’s 2013 top matric Matthew Walker - come true. This brings the total of Vice-Chancellor Scholars to 136 since this prestige bursary scheme was established in 2009. The R75 600-a-year scholarship introduced by NMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz is given to top performing school leavers from throughout the country. The annual award continues for the duration of the students’ course provided academic performance remains of the highest standard. NMMU Acting Deputy Director: Marketing Jo-Ann Daniels says more than 2 000 top schools were targeted countrywide to attract the best possible scholarship can-

didates. Of the 30 recipients, 26 are from the Eastern Cape, three are from the Western Cape and one from Kwazulu-Natal. Leading the pack is Alexander Road High with four recipients from the class of 2013 followed by Riebeek College in Uitenhage with three. Representing all seven faculties, half of the recipients registered for programmes in the Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences with the BCom programme being the most popular. Other study fields chosen by the VC Scholars include Pharmacy, Construction Economics, Mechatronics and Electrical Engineering. The Scholarship also offers a development programme and students have additional support of academic and administrative staff.

s a society, we generate waste at an alarming rate which contributes directly to pollution of the only surviving estuary in a metropolitan area worldwide, the Swartkops Estuary. In Port Elizabeth the trail begins above Uitenhage and moves steadily down the Bay to the confluence that is the Swartkops Estuary. “Pollution of the Swartkops River through the presence of heavy metals, litter and general waste contributes to an ecological disaster impacting river life forms such as mud and sand prawn, pencil bait/razor clam, blood worms and tongue worm,” said Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club. “All these in turn contribute to human health issues which include E Coli. Of late Hepatitis A has been contracted by a person through the ingestion of oysters from the river. “A major contribution to the pollution is the litter deposited in the Motherwell channel which in turn acts as the source of an ecological disaster in the making. According to Wayne Rudman from Uitenhage, who is the Zwartkops Conservancy (ZC) Team Honorary Marine Conservation Officer, “actions have consequences and we need to strive to develop a person’s conscience to differentiate between right and wrong. Especially for those who are not taught the basics thereof.” To this effect the Winterberg Primary School Grade 7s were invited to attend an interactive educational lesson presented by Jenny Rump of the ZC that took place at Dufor Park

Club funded the transport of the scholars to the Educational lecture provided by the ZC. The message is aimed at trying to develop a culture to use bins and not litter. Lion President Barend Erasmus confirmed that by “uniting with other services, civic and community groups, we can strengthen ties and reach more people in need. “With the necessary assistance this project can contribute to job creation, improved life style and a better life for all.”

Nieke het ’n ‘hart van goud’

VALENTYNSDANS VIR HARTSTIGTING

ieke Wait, ‘n graad 11 leerder van Hoërskool Despatch, ryg die een na die ander skoonheidstitel in. Haar skoonheid is nie net van buite nie, want sy het ‘n “hart van goud”. Nieke het ‘n opregte belangstelling in die nood in haar gemeenskap en is reeds die afgelope sewe jaar doenig met gemeenskapswerk. Verlede jaar het sy die “Parkie-pelle Projek” begin waar sy gemeenskapslede betrek het om sekere parkies in Despatch op te knap. Gedurende die Desember vakansie het Nieke deelgeneem aan die Junior Teen Mzantsi Afrika Rolemodel 2014 in Kampsbaai waar sy drie pryse gewen het. Sy is aangewys as die beste senior op die loopplank, Rolmodel van die Jaar en sy het die Filantrooptoekenning ontvang vir die titelhouer wat die meeste gemeenskapswerk gedoen het gedurende die jaar. Hierby was sy ook onder die top 10 in die talentkompetisie. Nieke is tans werksaam by die Imfundo Projek in Malabar Uitbreiding 6.

=Op Valentynsdag het leerders van Hoërskool Despatch rooi aangetrek fondse ingesamel vir die Hartstigting asook bloed geskenk. wat ‘n huisbaas aan houkoste en onderhoud bestee, op 27,8% te staan kom. “Dit beteken nie dat huisbase oorboord kan gaan nie,” sê Davel. “Hulle moet in gedagte hou dat huurders waarskynlik self sukkel om by te hou met gereelde stygings in die prys van elektrisiteit, voedsel en vervoer, om nie eens van hoër mediese koste en skoolgeld te praat nie, en verhogings in huurgeld binne perke te hou, veral as hulle ‘n goeie huurder wat gereeld en betyds betaal en die eiendom mooi oppas wil behou.” Hy sê egter huurders moet besef dat huisbase op die oomblik beslis nie verleë is nie aangesien hulle uit talle voornemende huurders kan kies - en ook nie opsetlike skade aan hul eiendom sal duld nie. “In talle gebiede kan ‘n huisbaas verwag om

binne ‘n paar dae ‘n nuwe huurder vir vakante eiendom te kry en huurders behoort dus te sorg dat betalings stiptelik gedoen word en die eiendom behoorlik onderhou word.” “Hulle moet ook kennis neem dat die meeste huisbase nou ‘n deposito vir moontlike skade en dienste gelyk aan twee maande se huurgeld vereis en dit huurders dus duur te staan kan kom indien hulle moet verhuis omdat hul heersende huurkontrak weens wanbetaling beëindig word.” Laastens, sê Davel, weet die meeste huisbase dat voornemende huurders deeglik gekeur moet word ten opsigte van hul kredietgeskiedenis sowel as hul betalingrekord in ander huureiendom - en vir huurders met ‘n swak rekord kan dit baie moeilik wees om ‘n nuwe huurkontrak te bekom.”

olkswagen is starting 2014 with the market introduction of one of the sportiest compact models in South Africa, the new Golf R. Since February 2013, Volkswagen has launched seven new Golf derivatives including Golf GTI. The new Golf R is powered by a newly designed 206 kW engine, which is 18 kW more powerful but up to 18 per cent more fuel efficient than the sixth generation Golf R. Like all previous Golf R models, the new model also transfers its turbocharged engine power to the road via a permanent all-wheel drive system. In this case, it is the latest version of the 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex coupling. Delivering pure dynamic performance are a newly configured sport suspension system (body height lowered by 20 mm), the new progressive steering system and “ESC Sport”. Optional features include Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system with the driving profile selector that features a new Race mode. The Golf R with a manual gearbox (only available in the second half of 2014) reaches 100 km/h after just 5.2

CO2 emissions were also improved from 199 to 159 g/km. The new Golf R that is equipped with BlueMotion Technology that offers Stop- Start system and battery regeneration. The new Golf R is equipped with an extensive package of customised and exclusive features. Along with specially designed bumpers, side sills and 19-inch Cadiz alloy wheels, the Golf R can also be visually distinguished by details such as standard bi-xenon headlights with newly designed LED daytime running lights (in dual-U design), dark red LED rear lights and two-branch exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes. Inside, the Golf R underlines its position as the flagship of the model range.

Racing pro’s enter local rally event T

he Algoa Steel 50k Challenge, first round will take place on Saturday. It will be the first of six events for the lucrative prizes at the end of the year that will consist of a Volkswagen Polo rally kit car for first place. The prize money for second position is R15 000 and third position is R7 000. A further R25 000 for the runner-up competitors rewarded as rally bucks paid out per points scored. Volkswagen Sasol Racing will enter this local event as a test session for a few top National drivers, S2000 Henk Lategan and Pierre Arries teamed up for the first time and Thilo Himmel and Armand du Toit, S1600 Volkswagen Motorsport privateers will be Paul Franklen and Henry Kohne, Marco Himmel and Francois Schonbee respective drivers and navigators expected to use this event as a warm up before the National Rally Championship starts. Local competitors are fired up about the season after Jacques Louw and Gabriel Groener walked away with the R50 000 prize consisting of Polo DIY kit car and racing accessories. They will be keen to defend the title with a contingent of around 20 rally cars in

EP darts classic aiming at high scores This year’s Eastern Province Classic Darts Tournament hopes to attract a record number of entrants to the annual competition and get-together hosted by Fish River Sun. The tournament is open to all darts players in the Eastern Cape, with entries on a Stay and Play basis. A special package is being offered by the Fish River Sun and the organisers of the Eastern Province Classic Darts Tournament. Entry will cost R1 220 per person sharing or R1 920 for a single room. Swimarathon to help eradicate polio Swimarathons are hosted across the globe in support of the Rotary’s Polio Plus Campaign which is hugely involved in fighting the Polio scourge that still has some countries in its destructive claws. Grey High School is hosting an Open Swimarathon at their campus in Port Elizabeth, where all participants who have purchased a blue wristband for R20, are invited to swim 100m on 1 March between 12:00-14:00. Those afraid of water are welcome to purchase a participant’s band (wristband).
