Successful operation nets 105 suspects REPORTER Performing their duties in line with the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) mission to prevent and combat crime, members from the Uitenhage Cluster continued to clamp down on criminal activities in several successful operations that were conducted recently. High visibility patrols and stop-and-search operations were conducted and resulted in the arrest of 105 suspects in the Uitenhage area. These suspects were arrested for various crimes, including house robbery, murder, rape, robbery, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft and the possession of suspected stolen goods. A total of 13 people were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor and 18 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs, while 21 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R10 500. As the country celebrates National Child Protection Week this week (from May 28 to June 4), the SAPS called on community members to report any suspicion of child abuse, neglect or exploitation of children. They also appealed to the community to work with them in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, tracing of illegal firearms and recovery of stolen property. Any information can be reported to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line on 32211.

SCHEEPERSVLAKTE-STUDAM HERVUL

Volgens haar is baie hiervan intussen her-

– ANNETTE LOVEMORE, BURGEMEESTERSKOMITEELID stel of word herstel.

K9 Unit shows their four-legged skills Dogs are commonly referred to as “man’s best friend” and in the South African Police Service, officers learn to depend on their four-legged partners as they perform their daily tasks. The effective combating of crime starts with dedicated and committed officers and their four-legged partners. Police dogs are utilized to provide both proactive and reactive services.

The Uitenhage K9 Unit embarked on a crime awareness campaign and Bowie, one of the Uitenhage four-legged K9s, visited the Despatch Voortrekkers. The main objective of the outreach programme was to educate and to empower the learners to take responsibility for their own safety and wellbeing at school, home, work or play. Members informed the learners about crime

prevention topics such as personal safety, emergency numbers and general crime hints. Learners were so appreciative of the good work that the Uitenhage K9 members and their partners were rendering to the community, that they brought some treats to the team who visited them. The Uitenhage K9 Unit would like to thank the Despatch Voortrekkers for their wonderful gesture and generosity.

. ’n Deelnemer mag so veel as 5 foto’s per kategorie inskryf. . . Betalings is by: Uitenhage Kameraklub, First National Bank, Uitenhage-tak, takkode: 210316, rekeningnommer 624 9098 4533 met verwysing “Kompetisie”. million Lion members, to celebrate this amazing accomplishment during June 2017 through various projects in their communities. “In order for us to achieve the objective the Uitenhage Lions Club in conjunction with the Leos Clubs extend a special invitation to the people from Uitenhage and Despatch for donations of blankets, comforters and/or duvets. Winter bedding drop off points Collection points will be set up on Saturday, June 3rd at Levyvale SuperSpar, with Uitenhage convener Lion Freddie (083 448 3120) in charge at this site. The other collection point will be at Despatch

Members of the internationally known Lions service club live by the motto of “We Serve” but in doing so they need the support of their local communities. “Locally we are running the project 100 Deeds for 100 Needs of which the objective is to collect 100 winter bedding items consisting of blankets, comforters and/or duvets. This is in celebration of Lions Clubs International 100th year anniversary,” said Lion President Hein de Vrey. A worldwide challenge has gone out to all 1.4

SuperSpar with Lion Barend (084 571 4874) as the convener there. “The donations of blankets, winter bedding and duvets will be distributed to needy scholars and students in the Uitenhage and Despatch areas,” said Lion de Vrey. The distribution of the donations will be handled via the United Christian Student’s Association (UCSA) of the Leos Club. “So, let the countdown commence! As per an old Arabian proverb, The virtue of deeds lies in completing them. We are looking forward for both Uitenhage and Despatch to achieve the target of 100 deeds for 100 needs,” said Lion De Vrey.

Volkswagen continues to support local NGOs REPORTER Volkswagen South Africa has given three additional local organisations funding towards furthering the good work they do in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. The Volkswagen for Good Initiative handed over cheques to the value of R506 600 to the three deserving local charities, bringing the total amount disbursed by Volkswagen in 2017 to local charities and non-profit organisations (NPOs) to just over R2.8 million. The three beneficiaries are Young Entrepreneurs Foundation, PE Mental Health Society and St Francis Hospice. Each organisation will receive a portion of the donation from Volkswagen. The Young Entrepreneurs Foundation (YE) teaches children, aged 7-15 years, vital entrepreneurial and financial literacy skills. This helps the children start and grow their own micro enterprises in a fun and experiential way. The programmes run over 30 weeks and schools are utilised as study centres. The classes are offered by YE accredited Facilitators. One of their goals is to inspire youth and change their lives. The Port Elizabeth Mental Health Society

has been in existence since 1939. The organisation renders a holistic service to people with disabilities and psychiatric illnesses. Their services are available to all people in the Nelson Mandela Metro irrespective of their personal circumstances. The programmes create awareness of mental health issues and are discussed in the form of workshops in order to change the mind-set of the general public. The programmes and workshops help decrease the levels of vulnerability and marginalisation with which people with disabilities live. The St Francis Hospice was established in 1986 as a faith-based palliative care hospice. The Hospice provides a holistic service of palliative care to short life expectancy patients by filling the gap in terminal service care through the offer of medical and nursing care as well as psychosocial support. “I am proud that VWSA through the Volkswagen for Good initiative is able to play a part in the difference that these organisations make in the lives of the residents of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro,” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa Chairman and Managing Director.

Christadelphians Gospel Group is coming to U’hage REPORTER Nelson Mandela Bay’s oldest gospel group, the Christadelphians, will be gracing the Allanridge Civic Centre and West End Community Centre stages this month. The group was established in 1969 in Kabah Township, Uitenhage, and has been the recipient of the Metro’s Music Legends Award in 2014, travelled to Greece, Egypt and Israel and boasts 16 music albums and several DVDs of their various live performances. Recent media reports, however, have created confusion by stating that the group’s name had changed. Cecil Arnolds, spokesperson for the group, said that these reports are false and the group has definitely not changed its name. Four former members of the Christadelphians Gospel Group, Chris Ressouw, Sebastian Human, Andries Phillips and Ronwyn Claassen, resigned from the group and are now singing under the name Christos Choristers.

The confusion was caused by the fact that the Christadelphians’s name has been abbreviated to Christos for many years. According to Arnolds, the Christos Choristers was created recently and is a separate group from the Christadelphians. Currently, the Christadelphians Gospel Group members are Danny Jacobs, Cecil Arnolds, Wimpie Arries, Welcome Tiyo, Lloyd Lean, Godfrey Murens, Kenneth Philander, Clive Booysen, Michael Grootboom, Ashley Tobias, Aljaney Seekoei and Keenan Seekoei. They are looking forward to seeing their fans at the shows. “These shows are not to be missed, as an exciting programme is being prepared for our fans,” said Arnolds. The show at the Allanridge Civic Centre in Uitenhage will take place on June 24 at 7pm, while the show at the West End Community Centre in Port Elizabeth will take place on June 25 at 3pm. Tickets are available from Danny Jacobs on 084 246 1281.

This new phase in our water situation – a water shortage emergency – underlines the need for even more focused efforts by both the Municipality and residents to save and conserve our precious remaining water. Please note that with the introduction of Part C, all rebates relating to underground/internal leaks will fall away; homeowners are therefore urged to check their water meters daily to discover the existence of any underground leaks. Previous water restrictions remain in force, such as the ban on the use of hosepipes linked to a municipal water supply. Additional stricter measures imposed, of particular important to high domestic users, contractors and borehole users, are as follows: • All domestic users using more than 40 Kℓ/m of water will be given two weeks’ notice to fix leaks or reduce their water consumption, failing which a flow meter restrictor will be installed to limit their water usage. • Apart from for concrete activities, contractors must use recycled water from the Fishwater Flats or any other approved wastewater treatment works at which disposal facilities exist. • Borehole water from trial holes will be made available free of charge for non-potable use at the Motherwell Cemetery, under strict access conditions. The volume per use will be as directed by the NMBM Executive Director: Infrastructure and Engineering. • All current and future borehole users and drilling contractors must in term of the NMBM Water and Sanitation Bylaw (Clause 83) register at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (Infrastructure and Engineering Director: Water and Sanitation – Water Distribution). The full range of water tariffs is available on the NMBM website at www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za It should also be noted that new annual tariff increases will be effective from 1 July 2017. Ref. 107

Five tips to get your home loan approved FOR many first time house buyers, the process of applying for a home loan can often be daunting as they wait eagerly for a positive response from their bank. “Taking time to understand how banks assess home loan applications can go a long way to helping you increase the chances of getting approval,” said Dr Simphiwe Madikizela, head of special projects at FNB Housing Finance. He shared five tips to help consumers get their home applications approved without any delays.

Although banks occasionally grant 100% home loans, having a deposit demonstrates your ability to save and increases your chances of getting approval.

These tips are:

Get pre-approval

Check the valuation of the property

Before a home loan is approved, banks conduct their own valuation to ensure that the amount being borrowed is not far off from the market value of the property, in case the property has to be re-sold in the future. FNB allows customers to proactively get a property and area report on the FNB App and online through Nav Home, and compare this with the details provided by the seller or agent prior to the home loan application process.

Avoid taking on additional debt

al denominator. Check for draughts under doors, around window frames and other openings. Fit strips under poorly sealed doors or make an under-door-draught stopper; one of those long material tubes filled with sand or something similar that you can use to keep out the cold. Fitting a geyser blanket will also help reduce your electricity costs as will insulating your roof. Fireplaces are great for adding some ambience and warmth to a cold room in winter, but before you light the first winter fire, check the chimney to make sure you don’t burn the house down. )For an infographic on routine home maintenance

The first cold snap of winter is a timely reminder that a little preventative winter maintenance could save you some money on expensive repairs. Your preparations may differ, depending on where you live in the country. Some will need to prepare more for wind and rain, while elsewhere very cold conditions can quickly run up the electricity bill. Marlies Kappers, head of marketing at DirectAxis, says: “While it is sometimes difficult to afford, home maintenance is a bit like getting your car serviced. By regularly attending to little things, you can avoid big costs in future.” While opinions vary about what comprises a good winter prep list, most experts agree that no matter whether you live in a summer- or winter- rainfall area cold is the common season-

Many consumers mistakenly assume that banks monitor only their credit profiles and perform updated affordability checks prior to the home loan approval process.

However, this process continues for at least three months until the property registration process ends. Therefore, taking on additional debt or defaulting against credit providers can result in the bank repricing and in extreme cases declining the loan altogether.

Saving up for a deposit

Getting pre-approval ahead of your home loan application gives you peace of mind by knowing whether you qualify or not. Your bank will normally ask for your latest payslip, three months’ bank statements, ID copy and proof of address for pre-approval.

Checking your credit score

You are allowed to check your credit profile free of charge once a year and can also purchase reports for a minimal fee from the credit bureaus. A clean credit record is essential for getting a home loan with any financial institution. “If you qualify financially and have met all the above requirements you are one step closer to getting approval and ultimately owning the house of your dreams,” concluded Madikizela. – REPORTER

Testimony for KING LWASA

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWASA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWASA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind y o u r p r o p e r t y, m a l e enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

Terms & Conditions Apply (While Stocks Last) X1TKXX19-UD010617

Mountain bikers in Nelson Mandela Bay can look forward to the rare pleasure of hitting new trails when the Baywest MTB Trails open for riding on June 16. Criss-crossing the undeveloped land behind Baywest Mall, the new trails are designed and managed by Fat Tracks Mountain Bike Club, and promise the same kind of familyfriendly recreational riding that mountain bikers have come to expect from the club. Fat Tracks chairman Johan Gerryts said the Baywest trails comprised a 12km loop, with shortcuts for a 6km or 9km option, and offered similar riding conditions to the nearby Norm-Hudlin trails. He described the trails as a well-balanced mix of 10% gravel road, 40% jeep track and 50% single track. “The trails are not technical at all in terms of drop-offs, hills and jumps. But about 50% is still very raw so it will require hard work on a mountain bike and can be tiring on the body. The route is winding and scenic, with a variety of bush, beautiful fynbos and forest.” Gerryts said alien invasive forest vegetation, such as black wattle and Port Jackson, was being cleared as part of a long-term environmental project by Baywest developers and would be replaced with indigenous plants in time to come. This is reflected in the route naming, Coral Tree and Waterberry, which are naturally occurring in the area. The trail head starts just outside

Nelson Mandela Bay residents can ride the new trails behind Baywest Mall from June 16. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Entrance 4, which is the entrance to Baywest Mall’s Fun Factory entertainment wing, where a route map and bike racks will be available to riders. “Because the trails start at the mall, this ride really has a completely different ‘feel’ to anything else in the Bay,” said Baywest Mall marketing manager Christopher Hutchings. “It’s perfect for families, as those who aren’t keen on mountain biking can go shopping or catch a movie, while they wait for their riders to return. Dad or Mom can have a quick hour on the bike and then meet the rest of the family for coffee or lunch at one of the restaurants.” For maximum safety and security, Gerryts said the trails would be open from sunrise to sunset but that orga-

nised night rides were being planned. Instead of the traditional “honesty box” system, he said there would be a Fat Tracks Zapper QR code which riders would scan to make a donation of between R20 and R50. While Baywest Mall will carry the costs of trail maintenance, rider donations will be used to develop the trails further. The trail officially launches on June 16, with a “Ride for the Youth” family day, comprising a 1km kids’ dash, 6km and 12km social rides, and an 18km mountain bike race. In the lead-up to the launch, Baywest Mall Ster-Kinekor will be hosting a screening of the Trails in Motion MTB Film Festival on June 8. For more information, visit www.fattracks.co.za or follow Baywest Mall on Facebook.

Runners gear up for NMB ASA 21.1km Championships REPORTER The Nelson Mandela Bay Athletics South Africa 21.1km Championships will set the pace in grand style on Saturday, June 24, with a racing prize purse and lucky draw prizes worth over R645 000. The Eastern Province Athletics President, Selby Thabethe, said the local committee was proud to host this major event on the road running calendar since 2014. Thabethe said this top-tier event, which receives annual televised coverage, showcases the Eastern Cape from a tourism standpoint. “With the support of our title sponsor, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, and Athletics South Africa, we aim to grow this event year on year into one of the finest races in South Africa,” said Thabethe. With R500 000 for the elite field to compete for, Alan Taylor, race director, said South Africa’s top athletes had already confirmed their participation. The 2016 men and women top ten finishers from both Kenya and Ethiopia will be defending their titles. “The NMB ASA 21.1km Champion-

ships allows locals the opportunity to race against the best in the country and therefore develops running in the region,” said Taylor. The event director, Mike Mbambani, welcomed the race’s new partner, Eastern Cape Motor Group, who have sponsored a brand-new Datsun Go vehicle prize, valued at R106 900. “The car is the highlight of our lucky draw competition, which means you don’t have to win one of the races to win it!” said Mbambani. He said the car draw would bring the prize giving to an exciting conclusion after the 21.1km cut off at 11.30 on the Saturday. The official prizegiving ceremony will take place at Pollock Beach race village, Summerstrand. “Anyone who enters the 21.1km or 5km races will be eligible for the car prize – but you must be there to claim it.” Five finalists will be drawn for a nail-biting finale to see who wins the car. Adidas will be sponsoring a R2 000 gift voucher for the four consolation prize winners. The NMB ASA 21.1km Championships, which is an official participation and league event, has grown in response to the needs of the running

community. “There’s been a host of changes this year to ensure that we keep improving, said race director, Alan Taylor. “An example of this would be the new timing facility for the 5km finishers who have enjoyed this service with their park runs, and will not miss out at this event.” He said the NMB ASA 21.1km Championship event had incentivised school involvement with a prize of sport equipment to the value of R30 000 for the top five schools with the most bulk entries. The 21.1km route, credited as the fastest in South Africa, will start and finish at Pollock Beach, Summerstrand. The 21.1km road race starts at 8am and the 5km fun run starts at 7:30am. Vehicles will gain access to the start from 8th Avenue as well as from 2nd Avenue into the Bird Rock parking area on the sea side until 7am on raceday. Enter online at www.whereinpe.co.za/sport or at local sports shops before June 20. Registration and late entries will take place at the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club from 2pm to 8pm on Friday, June 23 and from 5:30 on the morning of raceday.

Victory Raceway to host two events on 3 June Victory Raceway, located in Victoria Drive, Walmer, will host a National Qualifier and the 3rd Round of the Eastern Cape Regional Championships on June 3. Woolcock, Kruger secure Zuurberg title at first attempt REPORTER Overnight leaders Waylon Woolcock and HB Kruger completed a clean sweep of stage wins to claim overall honours in the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain bike race outside Port Elizabeth on Sunday. The BCX duo had a keen tussle with their rivals on the third and final day to emerge victorious by 20 seconds at the Zuurberg Mountain Village, which is perched above the Addo Elephant National Park. Riding in the event for the first time, the Western Cape pair finished the 50km stage in 2:11:40 for a combined race time of 8:08:01. They were followed home by the AscendisLCB outfit of Gert Heyns and Arno du Toit, who finished in 2:12:00 to consolidate their runnerup spot in the overall standings in 8:12:30. Defending champion Andrew Hill, who teamed up with Marco Joubert for TIB Insurance-Momsen, finished third on the day in 2:12:16 as well as in the general classification in 8:15:49. With a four-minute buffer going into the technically challenging final stage, Woolcock said their strategy was based on defence rather than attack. “If you look at the route we were probably at a slight disadvantage today against some of the more technical riders. “But something seriously would have to go wrong to lose a four-minute advantage in 50km, so we just tried to make sure that did not happen.” The top three teams rode together for nearly the whole stage until BCX spotted an opportunity with about a kilometre to go. “It wasn’t really planned, but we saw Arno taking a bit of strain coming up the last drag to the finish so we just put the hammer down for the stage win,” said Woolcock. Reflecting on the event, he said they were very happy with their decision to compete. “The hospitality and organisation have been top-notch and it is one of the best events I have been to,” he said. “Besides that, the terrain is amazing, with lots of variety and it can be quite gnarly and rough in some places. “As a climber, I enjoyed the fact that the stages finished at the top of a mountain every day.” Having added the Zuurberg title to the Winelands Encounter they won last month, Woolcock said it was important for them to show their credentials.
