Call to help little Sisi get legs NCEBA DLADLA

compassionate Despatch resident Sandile Adam has called on other caring citizens to lend a helping hand to little Siphosethu Ncandana (4) from KwaNobuhle, who is living with deformity.

Siphosethu (4) also known as Sisi was born with a disability, according to her grandmother Pinki Ncandana (67).

“At birth both her legs were short and without toes. One of her legs was slightly longer than the other,” said gogo Ncandana.

This partially blind pensioner revealed that both Sisi’s parents have passed away and that she, as the grandmother has now to look after Sisi and three other grandchildren whose mothers have also passed away.

Ncandana said she had been taking the Sisi to the doctors, hospitals and clinics without any help.

“Sisi was only a few months old when doctors at the Livingstone Hospital suggested that both her legs be amputated just above the knees. This was done as they said she will not be able to walk with the deformed legs.”

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal employee, Sandile Adam, was amazed at the intelligence and courage Sisi displayed.

“She walks around the house and plays with other children as though she has no disability at all,” said Adam.

“Children her age should, however, be at preparatory school. I fear for her having to walk and run amongst other children without legs. I really hope a good Samaritan finds her prosthetic legs which will enable her to walk,” said Adam.

Social Development Department spokesperson Sibabalwe Nkebe said, “our office was not aware of Sisi’s condition. We’ll follow it up and ensure that she gets admitted in one of the child care centres we operate in KwaNobuhle.”

The condition of being born without the smaller bones in legs that serve as the attachment of many of the muscles that control foot and ankle movement is known as bilateral fibular deficiency.

Usually this condition is known for also causing deformities of the ankle and foot. Since this condition causes severe problems enabling persons to walk, the recommended treatment is early amputation below the knee. In Sisi’s case her legs were amputated above the knees.

“I really hope a good Samaritan finds her prosthetic legs which will enable her to walk.”

The line-up includes eight top national acts including Mi Casa, Jimmy Nevis, Kurt Darren, Prime Circle, Lloyd Cele, Goldfish and Stuart Reece.

‘Illegal strike will not paralyse EMC’ REPORTER

T

he Eastcape Midlands College has dismissed 66 NEHAWU (National Education

Health and Allied Workers’ Union) staff members owing to illegal strike action.

This was announced after the strikers had ignored three ultimatums to return to work, breached a court interdict issued to protect staff, students and property and not attended a disciplinary hearing.

“As we are committed to quality teaching, learning and assessment in a safe environment, management has put various plans in place to ensure positive progress,” says Danie Kilian, VicePrincipal Registration of the college.

Some of the plans for progress include the extension of the application and registration period for prospective stu-

dents to 17 February, academic interventions to compensate for lost time and the college requested assistance in terms of additional administration staff from NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) to accelerate the bursary administration process.

NEHAWU raised various matters with college management during early 2014. After many attempts to address the matters amicably, NEHAWU withdrew from the forum, citing that they do not recognise the functional value of it.

During this period NEHAWU members embarked on an unprotected strike action, granting no further room for negotiations at that stage.

This paralysed the teaching and learning process at the college and tarnished the institution’s reputation.

A number of their grievances were labour related matters, which do not fall in the ambit of college management, but are linked to directives, policy and procedures from DHET (Department Higher Education and Training).

NEHAWU on during mid January again embarked on a full scale illegal, unprotected industrial action.

According to a press release issued on behalf of EMC, this action was marked by intimidation of staff, students, potential students

and parents, disregard for three ultimatums presented to them and vandalising of college property and damage to staff property.

The above offences have necessitated college management to close the college in the interest of the safety of all concerned, whilst attempting to restore the academic climate by negotiating with NEHAWU representatives.

The severity of the actions taken by NEHAWU escalated to the degree that college management was left with no option but to close the college for an indefinite period.

On Friday 30 January, during a march to the Cuyler Street Campus Head Office, NEHAWU handed a memorandum containing all their grievances. This memorandum was received and signed by Ms Mbontsi from DHET Regional Office. The college dispelled the grievances and demands cited in the memorandum.

EMC Executive Committee instituted corrective measures against the NEHAWU members participating in the illegal unprotected strike in the form of disciplinary hearings.

NEHAWU members were absent at the scheduled disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, 27 January. They were subsequently dismissed in absentia. The letters of dismissal are being delivered by courier services.

A disciplinary hearing for all shop stewards was scheduled for Tuesday, 3 February.

Doornhoek sewage leakage problems HEILIE COMBRINCK

A

t least twice a month the sewerage system at the bottom of Doornhoek Road in Gerald Smith needs to be unblocked.

Some residents in this area are punchdrunk from complaining regarding the maintenance in this area which seems also to be going down the drain.

“When we moved to this house about two and a half years ago we found the sewage situation like this. Drains blocking, the stench and swampy area next to our house. Nothing has changed,” said Riaan Lloyd, a resident at the corner of Du Plessis Street and Van Rooyen Avenue.

According to Lloyd the situation worsens during rainy weather and on hot days they do not dare open windows or the back door as a result of the stench.

“Whenever we report the blocked drains, the contractors do come and unblock it, for which we are very thankful. The problem is, this happens repeatingly and it will really be a blessing if the situation can be fixed permanently.”

The constant sewage leakage has through the years resulted in a swampy area at the corner of Doornhoek Road and Van Rooyen Avenue. This water crosses the road and runs downstream directly towards the Swartkops River.

Another resident who wishes to stay anonymous said sewage sometimes runs through their driveway.

“This is a health hazard as it also is our children’s playing area. We are tired of complaining,” she said.

On top of the hill where Doornhoek Road starts, another sewage leak has been running down Dower Avenue for months.

SPCA adoption day on Sunday The Uitenhage SPCA has many beautiful dogs and cats that are all desperately waiting for that special home to call their own.

Therefore an Adoption Day will be at the kennels on Sunday, February 8th between 10:00 and 12:00.

“Please help us to complete the rescue of our many animals by giving them a family of their own. For every animal homed, an opportunity is afforded another so at the end we end-up saving two animals,” said Elinda Tonnesen from the Uitenhage SPCA management board.

Despatch rugby pak Grens Despatch Rugbyklub speel eerskomende Saterdag in ’n vriendskaplike wedstryd, op hulle tuisveld by die dorp se sentrale sportvelde, teen die Grens Bulldogs Vodacomspan.

Despatch, wat vanjaar weer deel van die Cell C Gemeenskapsbeker-reeks is, was tot gister in Pretoria waar hulle teen die rugbyspanne van Tukkies en Pretoria Polisie kragte gemeet het.

Saterdag se wedstryd dien as voorbereiding vir Despatch wat as klubspan aan die Gemeenskapsbeker-reeks deelneem. Despatch het ’n goeie, ervare span en word aangevoer deur kaptein en agtsteman Jaco Swanepoel. Ander bekendes in die span sluit in Bobby Dyer (haker), Trichardt van Tonder (slot) en Baldwin Mcbean (vleuel).

Grens Bulldogs is ’n provinsiale span en speel in die Vodacombeker-reeks.

Sundays River to host 91st River Mile

=Residents can look forward to a weekend of water­based action and family entertainment at the 91st SPAR River Mile on the Sundays River on February 14 and 15.

he 91st edition of the Spar River Mile will offer a full weekend of water-based action and family entertainment when it launches on the Sundays River at Cannonville on February 14 and 15.

The festival attracted more than 6 000 visitors last year, with over 7 500 expected for the 2015 event, which once again takes place at Cannonville.

This year, former Idols winner Heinz Winckler will anchor the entertainment aspect with a riverside concert at 15:00 on the Saturday. He will be supported by PEbased reggae band The Brothers.

Continuing the celebrity trend, Mr PE André Fourie will join the EP Kings rugby team for a celebrity splash across the river before the serious swimmers take to the water for Sunday’s feature races – the SPAR Ladies’ Mile and SPAR Men’s Mile.

Also on the Sunday, well-known mentalist and illusionist Larry Soffer adds his special brand of magic to the prize-giving ceremony at 15:00.

According to event organiser Michael Zoetmulder, the festival is the only one of its kind nationally that combines world-class sporting events with an affordable, family-friendly festival.

He said there would once again be a full line-up of races

for swimmers of all ages and abilities, starting with the family half-mile, Speedo wetsuit double mile and disabled mile on day one of the festival.

“New to this year’s programme and a first in the Eastern Cape is a super-sprint distance triathlon relay, which is ideal for anyone wanting to attempt a triathlon for the first time. It also encourages families to get involved as it’s mixed teams of three.”

On day two, he said, the Wakaberry kids’ races for children 12 years and younger would precede the feature events.

“We’ll also have plenty of food and craft stalls and the supervised Rotary Kids’ Zone to keep the children entertained.”

SPAR Eastern Cape marketing manager Abri Swart said the retailer had been involved with South Africa’s oldest open-water swimming event for the past 16 years and had helped it to grow.

“Our affiliation with the River Mile is synonymous with the SPAR culture of family, fun, fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

Early bird entrants will receive a River Mile T-shirt and goodie bag and enjoy free entry to the festival on race day.
