raffic departments in Nelson Mandela Bay have been operating in chaotic circumstances for some time and are slowly getting worse.

Two of the main issues at the moment are the fact that the Uitenhage Traffic Department cannot currently issue professional driving permits (PDPs) owing to a broken machine, and the extremely long queues for eye tests at the Korsten Traffic Department.

The latter has been a problem for a very long time.

However, last year the municipality added four additional eye-testing devices to the only one that was working in an effort to ease the waiting period in the queues.

This means that the Korsten Traffic Department has a total of five eye-testing machines. However, customers claim that there are only two manned stations for eye tests. Recently, the line ran all the way into the parking lot.

NMB traffic department woes reach new low ANIKA DE BEER

A

nother issue, which is not caused by faulty or broken equipment, is the debate about the type of proof of address that is accepted by traffic departments in the Nelson Mandela Bay for driver and vehicle licence applications.

A resident living in an informal settlement complained that the traffic department refused a letter from the ward councillor confirming their residential and postal address and stated that they only accept utility accounts as proof of address.

In terms of amendments to the National

Road Traffic Regulations of 2000, which were promulgated on October 31, 2014, only utility accounts will be accepted as verification of applicants’ postal and residential addresses.

According to the Department of Transport, should the applicant not be the person in whose name the utility account is issued, the person in whose name the utility account has been issued must make an affidavit or affirmation declaring that the applicant resides at the address.

Applicants who reside at an informal settlement must submit a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor or

local tribal authority confirming the postal and residential address of the applicant.

Inefficient service Other grievances include staff allegedly abandoning people waiting to be helped to attend meetings, slow and inefficient service, and the poor attitudes of the staff and phones that continuously go unanswered.

Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said, “Plans are underway to open the Motherwell Traffic Testing Centre officially to serve the Motherwell community and surrounding areas.

“This step will greatly alleviate the pressure from the other two centres in the met-

ro. It is envisaged that the building will be officially handed over to Safety and Security before the end of September this year,” Mniki said.

Be patient “The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality would like to appeal to residents kindly to be patient during this process and understand that the safety and security directorate of the municipality, under the leadership of councillor John Best, is doing its best to have both the Korsten and Uitenhage Traffic Departments fully functional and operational in order to meet the needs of the metro,” said Mniki.

Police seek assistance with murder cases in KwaNobuhle Police are seeking assistance from anyone with information that could assist in solving two murder cases in KwaNobuhle.

The first incident occurred on Sunday, 5 February 2017 at about 02:30. The deceased, Phumlani Veli (26) was walking with a female friend in an open space near Ngeyakhe Street,

Kwanobuhle.

According to police information, two men, both armed with knives, allegedly approached the couple and demanded cellphones. After not getting anything from the couple, it was alleged that one of the suspects stabbed Veli several times and he later died

in hospital.

In another incident, almost two years ago, Sunday, 9 August 2015 around 18:30, police were alerted to the bodies of a man and a woman, both with stab wounds. The bodies were found lying in the bushes near Gunguluza Area 10, KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage. They were

later identified as that of Hans Swartbooi (65) and Lydia Johnson (57) respectively. In all these cases, no suspects were ever arrested and the police are urging anyone with information to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Gcinikhaya Ntliziywana at 041 978 8800 or 082 319 9223.

Several crime intelligence led high density disruptive operations continued to yield positive results in the Uitenhage Cluster, when 94 suspects were arrested.

Performing their duties in line with the Back to Basics approach, members from the Uitenhage Cluster continued to clamp down on criminal activities over the past weekend, by conducting high visibility patrols and stop and search operations.

According to police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, the suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder to possession of drugs, possession of suspected stolen property, drunken driving, burglary residential, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and theft.

A total of 31 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R15 500.

The focus of the operations was on trio crimes, wanted suspects, the transportation of stolen property, illegal drugs, driving under the influence of liquor and lawlessness in the Cluster.

SAPS also encourage the community to work with them in reducing crime and they appeal to the community to provide valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects involved in the hijacking of motor vehicles, house robberies and business robberies (commonly referred to by the SAPS as trio crimes) which will ultimately lead to the conviction of these criminals. )Share information and support your community in the fight against crime. Die onthulling was deel van die metro se 67 minuut lange Mandeladag-vieringe by die Nelson Mandelabaai-stadion.

Die metro se inwoners word aangemoedig om ’n selfie by die standbeeld te neem en dit in sosiale media te deel.

Luvuyo Bangazi, ’n woordvoerder van die Madibabaai-ontwikkelingsagentskap (MBDA), sê kunsstudente aan die Nelson Mandela-Universiteit het die standbeeld geskep in opdrag van die MBDA as deel van die Route 67-kunsprogram.

Bangazi sê die werk wat deur die studente onderneem is, is ’n kombinasie van drie standbeelde wat Conversations with the Queen genoem word. Die drie standbeelde is van Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba en Mandela.

Boonzaaier to take Moravian music abroad Devandré Boonzaaier, a well known organist and musician from Uitenhage as well as lecturer at the University of Fort Hare has been invited to the University of Oxford in England.

This is to present a paper at the Christian Congregational Music Conference which takes place in England from July 18 to 21. The pa-

per is based on Boonzaaier’s doctoral work on the Moravian Church Music Heritage in South Africa.

Boonzaaier has also been invited – as an international scholarship recipient – to the 25th Moravian Music Festival to be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in the United States, from July 23 to 29.

The world premiere of a composition by South African Moravian composer, EJ Williams, which Boonzaaier edited and archived as part of his doctoral study, will form part of the festival.

Boonzaaier is the organist of Arcadia Moravian Church and a doctoral student at Nelson Mandela University.

First-of-its-kind collectors fayre P

assionate collectors of all persuasions will discover sought-after items to add to their treasures when a vintage, retro, geek, collectibles, cosplay and hobbies fayre comes to Walmer Park Shopping Centre on July 21 and 22. [con]fuze, as the annual event has been named, promises to fuse an eclectic mix of intertwined interests, designed to attract young and old.

According to organisers Elsje Smuts and Craig Pannell, the time is right for the Bay to host such an inclusive and comprehensive event.

“The age of the collector is most certainly upon us,” said Pannell.

“Gone are the days of fringe sub-cultures being only for the collector or the hobbyist or the geek – these different sub-cultures are now more widespread than ever and have become, in a real sense, mainstream.”

“While PE is home to some very good antique and vintage shops, it has never hosted a comprehensive retro or collectibles fair,” he said, adding that the Bay had also seen good growth in geek-related conventions and activities.

Ralph Meintjes took a bottle half filled with water, placed a potato inside, closed the lid and shook it.

The demonstration is about concussion awareness and his Adopt A Smile project to supply custom-made mouth guards to sports players from local schools.

“Whenever you are tackled hard on a rugby field or fall on the soccer or hockey field and hit your head, your brain takes a lot of shock and it can be severely injured,” said Meintjes.

“Over-the-counter mouth guards do not provide the necessary safety. Custom-made mouth guards can prevent injuries like cerebral haemorrhages, jaw fractures, even head and neck injuries and it can prevent the lower jaw being wedged into the upper jaw.”

He will be launching the Adopt A Smile project with the theme “Safety Belt of the Mind” on Friday, 28th and Saturday 29th at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre. The aim is to inform scholars (Friday) and businesspersons (Saturday) of the project. All proceeds will go towards the manufacturing of custom-made mouth guards for rugby and hockey players from seven local schools.

Meintjes is a qualified dental technologist with 23 years of experience in the dentistry industry. He also is the founder of Adopt A Smile, which he started after realising how many people cannot afford to have critical dental procedures done.

“The primary object of the project is to provide these much needed services at little or no cost to community members. In doing so, we are dependent on fundraising efforts and sponsorships,” said Meintjes.

Therefore past learners as well as the public are invited to donate tickets online at www.quicket.co.za and nominate a high school to which it should go. This will be towards funding custom-made mouth guards for the specific school/s nominated.

“We would like to thank the principals of the seven schools involved for their assistance with the project,” said Meintjes.

U’hage man among top 18 best boerewors finalists The Top 18 contestants in the 2017 Championship Boerewors competition will battle it out on Saturday, 22 July at the Root 44 Market in Stellenbosch.

Here the top three recipes will be chosen by a panel of expert judges from the South African Chefs Association (SACA).

The competition really heats up when the top three recipes will be available in Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets for consumers to buy, braai and vote for their favourite between Friday 18 August and Friday 8 September 2017.

By voting the public ultimately decides who the new boerewors champion is and stands a chance of winning their share of awesome prizes.

The winner of the 2017 Championship Boerewors competition, as voted for by the public, will be announced on Wednesday, 13 September.

AFRICAN DAWN: EDUCATIONAL BIRD & WILDLIFE EXPERIENCE

Giving animals, birds a second chance MONIQUE BASSON

B

urnt trees and desolation.

Driving the gravel road to African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary in Thornhill, the devastation left by raging fires fuelled by storm winds on June 3, surrounds one.

Gone are the once lush greenery and tall trees.

Amid these ruins African Dawn escaped completely unscathed - from the lazy female Nile crocodile named Steve to the playful servals.

This despite the fire coming within a metre of the sanctuary, says veterinary nurse and volunteer Ali Horn, who has been with African Dawn for the last 12 years.

“We were on the other side of the N2 helping to remove some cattle, when the wind suddenly turned,” she says.

“Within minutes the road to African Dawn was surrounded by flames. But we pushed through, got the volunteers and escaped over farm land to safety. Not wanting to leave the animals behind, the owner, Percy Hickman, rushed back to the sanctuary. However, there was nothing he could do.

“Upon our return we expected the worst.

But as the smoke cleared, we slowly started to realise that not one animal was injured - not even by the smoke.”

African Dawn African Dawn is a safe sanctuary for cheetahs, servals, caracal, monkeys, squirrels, mongoose, meerkats and crocodile, as well as numerous buck species including grysbok, grey duiker and blue duiker, Bird lovers can sit around and hear the calls of birds such as the Knysna loerie, the laughing dove and the vibrant bishop.

It being home to over 250 species of birds indigenous to South Africa and further afield, African Dawn boasts the largest aviary in the Eastern Cape.

It also serves as a sanctuary which takes in unwanted pets such as parrots and monkeys.

The beginning But where did it all start?

It all started with Percy Hickman’s love for birds and animals.

From a very young age, he took in orphaned and injured birds and animals. As more and more animals found their way to his loving and healing sanctuary, Hickman decided to open his sanctuary’s doors to the public. In doing so, he helped foot the bill for the growing cost of feeding and caring for these wild animals and birds.

The sanctuary continued to grow over the years, and in 2003 he started a successful volunteer programme to help look after the ever-growing number of residents.

Visit Spend a relaxing day at African Dawn and immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings of the park, while the kids learn more about the wildlife that surrounds them.

Feed the free-roaming birds such as guinea fowl, peacocks and chicks, or enjoy a romantic picnic under the shade of an old pear tree.

Braai facilities are also available.

An on-site restaurant serves light meals between 10:00 and 14:00.

Situated near Thornhill just off the N2 between Jeffryes Bay and Port Elizabeth, African Dawn is open seven days a week from 09:00 to 17:00, including public holidays.

The entrance fee is R65 for adults, R30 for children between 6 and 16 years, and R15 for children between 3 and 5 years.

Children under three enter free.

imon Moss claimed his maiden victory in the Sasol GTC Africa at Aldo Scribante Raceway on Saturday to turn up the heat on his opponents in the race for overall championship honours.

In a further boost for the Engen Xtreme team, Moss’ teammate Michael Stephen qualified on pole for the first race, won race one and finished the day in third place overall in his Engen Xtreme Audi A3 – narrowing the gap on current championship leader Gennaro Bonafede in the process.

“This was a great day out in front of my home crowd,” said Moss afterwards who only qualified third fastest.

“I think I was faster in the races and believe I really should have won the first race – but I wasn’t going to risk anything with my teammate Michael Stephen in the lead. A much better plan to get a one-two result for the team.”

“During Race Two, starting from the back and racing through the field, I got to the front as quickly as possible, but at that point Robert Wolk had already built up about a four second lead on the field.

“I was getting close, down to less than oneand- a-half seconds, but there just weren’t enough laps to close on him once I’d managed to get past the other competitors, so I finished in second place.”

For Stephen, the qualifying session was a faultless performance and he was almost a half-second faster than his rivals.

In Race One, he led from start to finish – which put him at the back of the grid for Race Two. “Qualifying went very well, even dipping into the 1:03s, so I was very happy with that.

I had a little bit of pressure from Simon in the early stages of Race One, but managed the gap – and my tyres for that race – with a per-

fect result for the team finishing in first and second,” commented Stephen.

“In Race Two, I had a good start considering I was starting at the back. I made a move on Gennaro in the hairpin where we touched and both went off, losing track position but we both recovered from that and continued racing.

“It wasn’t the ideal result crossing the line in fourth place but we’ve closed down the gap to Gennaro in the championship – which was our overall goal for the weekend.”

The Engen Xtreme Team have now closed to within 29 points of Bonafede after the PE round, with Stephen putting in maximum effort to achieve a second consecutive Sasol GTC Africa title, while third-placed Moss is now 111 points ahead of Johan Fourie in fourth.

This puts both Engen Xtreme Team competitors in a commanding position in the championship – with four rounds left to run.

Round Six of the Sasol GTC Africa series will see the Engen Xtreme Team back in competition at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, August 12.
