iebeek College Girls’ High School contributed to the worldwide call for the release of the kidnapped girls in Nigeria.

“We want to take a stand against slavery, abuse and selling of young girls.”

Grade 7 Social Sciences learners, 67 in total, posed for a photograph portraying the slogan “Bring Back Our Girls”. This slogan is used across the globe as a message in solidarity against this act of slavery and human trafficking. Riebeek College’s Principal, Marilyn Woods JAYDE PANAYIOTOU, RIEBEEK said, “The Riebeek girls make me so proud. COLLEGE GRADE 7 TEACHER They are always thinking of the plight of others.” According to Jayde Panayiotou, the Grade 7 Social Sciences teacher, they are currently teaching the learners regarding slavery and its impact on society through all the ages. “Modern day slavery is a real problem that Riebeek’s girls feel deeply concerned about. We felt that we want the girls released so that they can enjoy the same freedom that our Riebeek girls have. We want to take a stand against slavery, abuse and selling of young girls. Education is the key to our future and for that to be taken away is a human rights violation with grave consequences.” A Grade 7 girl, Lwazi Solomon said, “It is important that we did this because it could be us in a situation and we would want the world to help us. It is devastating and we would be terrified to =Sincerity and empathy were quite tangible at a recently held assembly at Riebeek College Girls’ High School where Grade 10 girls prayed for the safety of girls all over be away from our school, the world. ver 5 000 people are expected to attend a march in Nelson Mandela Bay on Monday in solidarity with the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. The march will be from the New Law Courts to the Port Elizabeth City Hall to hand over a letter of solidarity and appeal to the Nigerian government and international community to speed up all efforts to bring back the 234 girls which were abducted in April 14. Mvuzo Mbelekane who is organising the campaign said they want to demonstrate their anger and solidar-

ity by marching to Local Government Offices because there is no Nigerian Embassy in the city. “The campaign is not a political party thing and the Municipality is not involved. We want our government to intervene and help the Nigerian government to bring back our girls alive,” he said. This comes after approximately 234 female students were kidnapped from the Nigerian Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State, Nigeria. The kidnappings were claimed by Boko Haram, an Islamic Jihadist and Takfiri terrorist organization based in northeast Nigeria. This has resulted in an outpouring

of outrage from the international community. Mbelekane said their volunteers had distributed flyers, posters and asked people to sign the Letter of Solidarity in all Shopping Centres of Nelson Mandela Bay. “On Saturday, we will be out to mobilise people by distributing flyers and asking them to sign the Letter of Solidarity in all malls from 10:00 14:00,” he added. )Mbelekane said the first 5 000 people to arrive on Monday for the march will get #BringBackOurGirls T-shirts free. He also requested participants to bring placards on the day of the march. It starts at 10:00 at the New Law Courts.

Leerder se toneelspel bekroon in Kaap L

oriaan Koert van Hoërskool Despatch het onlangs aan die finale rondte van die Nasionale Toneelspelkompetisie vir Hoërskoolleerders by die Kunstekaap Teater in Kaapstad deelgeneem. ’n Totaal van 485 leerders van regoor die land het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem. Slegs 60 het deurgedring na die finale rondte, waarvan Loriaan een was. Alhoewel sy nie onder die top 30 finaliste was nie, is sy wel

bekroon met ‘n toekenning vir die Hoërskoolleerder met Talent. Vanjaar se beoordelaars was onder andere Diane de Beer, Brendon Daniels, Stian Bam, Vicky Davis, Kobus Burger (uitvoerende regisseur: RSG) en Nadia Valvekens. Dit was vir Loriaan ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring en sy het ook die geleentheid gehad om saam met haar drama-afrigter, Lee-Ann Snyman, na die musiekblyspel “Showboat” te gaan kyk.

Jacket drive to keep out the winter chill

A Jacket Drive, to assist in keeping the less fortunate warm this winter, has been initiated by Ubuntu Community Development Solutions (UCDS) in Uitenhage.

Angie Nell from UCDS said the drive has kicked-off and will run until 1st June. “Most of us or our children have an old jersey that no longer fits or that we just don’t wear any more. The items can be in

any condition as we have a team to mend and sew them,” said Nell. “We will be collecting jackets and jerseys of all sizes. They will be handed-out on Tuesday, 3 June at local shelters for the homeless,” said Nell. “We are urging the public to assist us with the donation of a jacket or jersey that they no longer wear, so that they can be given to someone who needs them this winter.”

U’hage K9 members arrest drug dealer HEILIE COMBRINCK

embers from the Uitenhage K9 Unit last Friday, during a routine roadblock on the R75 arrested a man from Hankey for being in possession of dagga with an estimated street value of R300 000. According to police spokersperson WO Gerda Swart, the police members at the roadblock noticed a blue Ford Bantam bakkie and were suspicious regarding its cargo. “On closer investigation it became clear that the bakkie was stacked with bags containing dagga. “The driver, a 40-year-old man from

Hankey, was arrested on the spot and detained for illegally dealing in dagga. The dagga weighed about 151kg,” said WO Swart. The Cluster Commander of Uitenhage, Brigadier Phillip Salukazana commended the members and said: “People, who are selling drugs including dagga – especially to our children - are harming our society. “Hence all police members are urged to keep up the good work and continue to crack down on these unlawful substances. “This was the second success in one week for the Uitenhage Cluster and these busts are applauded and police members are thanked for closing the avenues for drug dealers and syndicates,” said Brigadier Salukazana.

Hardly back from their recent trip, the group and their supporters are already enthusiastically preparing for their next mission in which they aim to deliver 5 000 Bibles. Major boost to job creation The inclusion of Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC EC) graduates in a practical training programme by Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has been applauded as a major boost to job creation. Six AIDC EC graduates have been involved in on-the-job training at the VWSA Uitenhage plant since January. The AIDC EC, which last year partnered with the government’s R9 billion Jobs Fund to ensure that the region’s automotive sector is a major beneficiary of its training, released graduates into various training programmes earlier this year. Upon completion of their training in June, some of the graduates could be employed permanently at VWSA, provided there are vacancies within their various fields. Lance Schultz, AIDC EC Supplier Development Manager, praised VWSA’s commitment to job creation by providing training for the graduates. “The AIDC EC believes that the VWSA commitment will act as a catalyst for other large manufacturers to employ these recruits,” said Schultz. The training programme aims to effec-

tively equip unemployed engineers with global best practice skills and techniques to add value to any manufacturing environment, he said. The placed graduates have described the opportunity to work at VWSA as careerchanging. “Being placed at Volkswagen helps me to implement all the tools and skills that I learnt at the AIDC,” said AIDC EC graduate Solomon Qwesha, who is working as a trainee project engineer within the Uitenhage plant’s Logistics Planning department. Pumlani Manyaka, an AIDC EC graduate training within the plant’s Industrial Engineering department, said the handson training enabled him to follow his dream. Schultz said the new partnership with VWSA was rewarding. “It is deeply rewarding to see the partnership between government and industry working so well in the context of the Jobs Fund. The objective of creating permanent employment opportunities would be hamstrung if industry did not buy in, like VWSA has.’’

Night relay off to a good start The Investec Night Relay Series, held last Thursday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, had a great start with just under 100 corporate teams taking part despite strong winds on the night. The 5 runners from Transnet proved too strong for the Gamble Pharmacy defending champions when their Men’s Transnet Lions team completed the 25km distance in a time of 1hr 21min. This is 2 minutes faster than the 2013 champions who have vowed to make a comeback after their Olympic runner, Lusapho April, was unable to attend. The Sage team, the Flying Sages, rounded up the top 3 in 1hr 36.
