His hard work and dedication to his academics paid off as Lyle Ressouw was ranked top in the Uitenhage district and 3rd in the Eastern Cape region.

“His achievement at regional level supersedes any accolades he may have received at district level. It is the second time in two years that Muir has a top learner in the Uitenhage District,” said Bun Hopley, Headmaster at Muir College Boys’ High School.

Last year’s top student, Milan Gajjar is currently studying Medicine at UCT. Lyle scored an astounding 100% for mathematics, ranking him in third position for mathematics in South Africa, and 99% for accounting.

In 2014 Lyle was awarded a bursary from Old Mutual, allowing him to study Actuarial Sciences at Stellenbosch University where he is already enrolled. He has been an exemplary student who is sure to carry his great work ethic through to his tertiary studies.

2014 Muir headboy, Mylan Jonas also did very well and obtained his A aggregate scoring 92% in mathematics and 91% in Life Science. He goes on to study at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Dít nadat pres. Jacob Zuma asook ander ANC-swaargewigte soos Gwede Mantashe verlede Vrydag tot laataand samesprekings in die Baai kom hou het. Mantashe, sekretaris-generaal van die ANC, het aangekondig dat Charles Nqakula, hoë kommissaris in Mosambiek, die taakspan sal lei.

Nceba Faku, voormalige ANC-burgemeester en ANC-streekvoorsitter, het gesê Nqakula is ’n uitstekende keuse “omdat hy so vertroud is met die streek”.

Faku, om wie se destydse bestuurskap ook ’n paar donker wolke saamgepak het, het bygevoeg hy is ook verheug oor die “regruktaakspan”.

Voortdurende binnegevegte in die ANCleierskap, korrupsie en politieke inmengery is van die belangrikste oorsake vir die verval van die Nelson Mandelabaai-metropool.

Mantashe, asook Jessie Duarte, adjunksekretaris-generaal van die ANC, het ook oor die “probleem van korrupsie” gepraat.

Duarte het aan die SAUK gesê sy is ook bekommerd oor raadslede wat sakebelange het. “Die

“Die taakspan sal net ’n front van nuwe gesigte, wat verandering voorstel, wees. Agter die gordyne sal dit steeds dieselfde amptenare wees wat die toue trek,” het hy gesê.

In 2011 se munisipale verkiesings het die ANC baie stemme aan die DA afgestaan en het oplaas 63 setels teenoor die DA se 48 ingepalm.

Unknown woman fatally injured on R75 road The police in Kirkwood are appealing to the public to assist them with the identification of a woman who was fatally injured on the evening of Monday, 12 January 2015 at about 23:40.

According to police records, the unknown woman (in her early forties) was knocked over by a Toyota HiLux bakkie.

“The unknown woman allegedly swerved in front of the vehicle. The 24-year-old driver stopped at the accident and notified the police. The

incident occurred on the R75 road between Kirkwood and Glenconnor,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart.

The deceased was wearing a dark skirt and shirt at the time of the incident. Besorgde buurman vang ‘moordenaar’ Danksy ’n oplettende buurman is een van vier vermeende moordenaars in Uitenhage gevang.

Na bewering is Colin Maart (44) Vrydagmiddag in sy huis in Langestraat, Penford deur vier mans oorval. Een van die mans het glo ’n skerp voorwerp in Maart se bors gesteek voor hulle te voet gevlug het.

Miracle girl enjoys first day in Grade 3 HEILIE COMBRINCK

t’s time to go back to school. Looking forward to this is a 10-year old girl from Despatch, who was born with a life threatening heart condition, but defied all the odds and yesterday attended her first day in Grade 3.

Zandrea Zakiya Osborne was born with a cleft lip, she had a feeding disorder, a growth problem, failure to thrive, a reflux problem

“Apart from the illnesses Zandrea is a beautiful, happy little girl who allows nothing to get her down.

“She is my inspiration and has taught me - when you are down and struggling to put in extra effort and comeback when nobody expects you to.

“These are the things that make a champion - and Zandrea is mine!”

Zandrea is a learner at Cape Recife School were she is flourishing despite wearing built-up shoes with a caliper, as one leg is

SPCA adoption and boarding fees increase The Uitenhage SPCA has many beautiful dogs and cats that are all desperately waiting for that special home to call their own.

Therefore an Adoption Day will be at the kennels on Sunday, January 25th between 10:00 and 12:00.

“Please help us to complete the rescue of our many animals by giving them a family of their own. For every animal homed, an opportunity is afforded another so at the end we end-up saving two animals,” said Elinda Tonnesen from the Uitenhage SPCA manage-

ment board.

A jumble sale will be held simultaneously on Sunday and the public are invited to come and browse through all books and second hand items for sale. Refreshments will be available.

“Unfortunately our adoption fees have increased. As all know, the Uitenhage SPCA does not have its own veterinarian. This results in all our adopted animals being sterilised by private veterinarians.”

Adoptions fees as listed below are only applicable to Uitenhage SPCA Open Days on

Sundays. All dogs are inoculated.

REPORTER The fully equipped Phelophepa Health Train, an initiative of the Transnet Foundation, will be stationed at the Swartkops Station from 26 January until 6 February to provide healthcare services to impoverished residents from Nelson Mandela Bay. The Phelophepa Health Train - the world’s first primary healthcare hospital on wheels - uses the existing rail network to make quality medical care an accessible reality for many of South Africa’s most remote communities.

The first Phelophepa coach – recipient of the United Nations Public Service Award in the “Improving Service Delivery” category in June 2008 – made its way to awaiting patients in rural South Africa in 1994 as a threecarriage eye clinic. The project developed to

two custom-built eighteen-carriage trains equipped with modern medical equipment.

Known as the miracle train, Phelophepa provides vision screening programmes, health, oral, dental care, screening for diabetes and cancer, psychological counselling services, basic health education awareness and community counselling workshops which, amongst others, are provided on a daily basis.

Since the Phelophepa Train can be in an area for only a limited period, teams are sent out in the community to market the facility prior to entering an area with the intention to complement and support existing facilities. )The public is advised that services will be provided between 07:00 and 16:00 from Monday to Thursday, and from 07:30 to 12:00 on a Friday. The train is not open during weekends.

EP chess in top form at nationals

Eleven Eastern Province chess teams recently participated in a national tournament held in Kimberley and eight of the teams have ended amongst the top teams in their respective categories.

According to Fiona Burger, secretary of the Nelson Mandela Bay Chess (EP) they are extremely proud of their teams.

“This is also the best achievement NMB (EP) Chess has ever had,” said Burger.

These are the wise words of Litha Adams, the first ever headboy of colour at Frans Conradie primary school in Despatch.

“Having been exposed to other areas of the Metro where I have seen less fortunate children wearing torn clothes and broken shoes to school, I’ve decided to do something about it through goodwill,” said the enthusiastic Litha, who has established the Goodwill Ambassadors initiative, bringing change amongst his fellow teens.

Apart from being the 2014 headboy at Frans Conradie, Litha also is a talented rugby player and was awarded the Sportsman of the Year trophy.

He participated in the Craven Week rugby tournament, played rugby for EP U.13 as well as EP Sevens.

“I wish to send out my gratitude to the principal Mr Basson and his staff as well as fellow learners who bestowed confidence on me.

“The skills that I have amassed are indelible. I will always be proud of Frans Conradie for as long as I live,” said Litha, who this year commenced his high school career at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth.

It is his wish to introduce his Goodwill Ambassadors initiative to fellow Grey High School learners and getting them involved in making a difference to learners less fortunate.

“I humbly request parents of my school mates and friends as well as the community to please assist with the donation of good second hand school shoes, grey trousers and white shirts.

“Fellow Goodwill Ambassadors and I will distribute these items to learners in need,” said Litha.

If you’re looking to sell property this year, the market could well be in your favour.

After three consecutive years of real house price growth, estate agents are now seeing a demand for residential properties outstripping supply.

John Loos, household and property sector strategist for First National Bank, says he believes it is quite possible that there will be a price growth rate of 8% to 9% in the year ahead.

“This expectation is based on a number of factors, including the downward move in global oil prices, a decline in global food prices and a reasonably behaved rand,” he says.

Andrew Golding, chief executive of the Pam Golding group, agrees.

“Last year was the year when house price growth finally began to move into above-inflation, positive territory for the first time since the 2008 recession ended.

New Amarok double cab hits the road REPORTER The Amarok Double Cab has revolutionised the local 1-tonne bakkie market since its introduction in September 2010.

One of the innovative technologies that Amarok introduced into the local bakkie segment was the 8-speed automatic transmission in January 2013. Until now, this popular derivative was available only with a permanent four-wheel drive system.

Customers can now order the Amarok Double Cab Automatic with a rear-wheel drive system. The 4x2 derivative has a combined fuel consumption of 8.2 litres per 100 km and

CO2 emissions of 216 g/km.

The additional gears make it possible to achieve a wider gear ratio spread between the 1st and 8th gears compared to a conventional automatic transmission. As a result, the 132kW 2.0 litre BiTDI engine works more frequently in its optimal torque band. The 8th gear has been configured as a fuel saving overdrive gear that operates at reduced engine speed.

The 2.0 litre BiTDI has a maximum torque of 420 Newton metres that is available at 1 750rpm.

The top speed of 180 km/h is reached in 7th gear. It takes only 10.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.

Karate girl nominated to represent SA in the Netherlands HEILIE COMBRINCK Young sports girl Zoe Campher from Uitenhage was nominated to represent South Africa at the World Japan Karate Association World Championships which will be held at Vlissingen in the Netherlands.

This deputy headgirl of Dower Practising School commenced with karate training at the age of 6 and recently received her brown belt.

As a member of the South African Federation of Shotokan Karate team, Zoe needs to raise an amount of approximately R20 000 to be able to participate at the world championships which will be held from 1921 June 2015.

“What an honour it is for my child to be nominated to represent her country. The cost of travel is high and we are eager and trying our best to raise the much-needed funds,” said Zoe’s mother Chantelle Campher, who also is a keen

sports woman.

“We have held fund-raising events and also wish to thank Dower Practising School which held events with the aim to support Zoe. However we are still in need of funds to make this trip possible for my girl.”

Members of the SA FSK national team have to pay all costs of their trip by February 20th.

Apart from karate she has received various diplomas and certificates for Academic Achievements, is a keen swimmer who has completed several Redhouse River Mile events and Zoe is just as fast on the athletic track.

Former DP rugby player off to New Zealand REPORTER A former Daniel Pienaar THS, Eastern Province Craven Week and SA Schools prop, Lupumlo Mguca, is being provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to finish his studies at the prestige Burnside High School in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Mguca will be leaving for New Zealand this week on a scholarship, provided by the SA Rugby EP Kings Academy and funded through the generous sponsorship of BLG Logistics, along with support from the EP Rugby Union.

On his arrival in New Zealand, Mguca will complete four of his matric subjects, while taking part in an extensive rugby programme offered through the school.

He will then return next year, where he will complete his matric in line with the Kings Academy Programme.

Burnside High School is the largest secondary school in the South Island of New Zealand.

It is a co-ed school with an established reputation for academic excellence, with 2 600 registered students including international students from more than 45 different countries.

“This is an amazing opportunity for a local boy from Motherwell, to experience the culture of New Zealand, and be schooled and coached by some of New Zealand’s top coaches.

“The first scrumming coaching session is going to be taken by the legendery Mike Cron the All Black scrum guru,” said Academy Manager, Robbi Kempson.

Kempson said Mguca would be staying in a Homestay programme while in New Zealand – where exchange students are placed with a local family– being placed with the school’s first team coach’s family.

“This is a great opportunity for him. No other school in New Zealand offers such a full programme to develop their students rugby abilities.

“The number of hours of high-level skills training and weights is basically the same as for a professional player,” he said.

Kempson said Mguca would be able to stay in touch with his family through a dedicated Facebook page that was set up for daily updates, as well as through Skype calls.

“From the Kings Academy perspective, I think it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a very talented young man,” said Kempson.

Memorial stock car race held in honour of legend Victory Raceway will be hosing the Curt Alchin Memorial Race on Saturday in remembrance of the motorsport legend who tragically passed away in 2012.

Curt Alchin was a multiple South African champion in oval racing. He passed away whilst competing in a V8 American Saloon race.

The competing classes in Saturday’s races include Development, 1660s, 2.1 Modifieds, Heavy Metals, Hot Rods and American Saloons. The gates open at 15:00 and racing starts at 18:00. There will be braai facilities available as well as foodstalls. )For more information contact Maggie 082 656 8830.
