ns gaan nou vir Johna sy Blou Bul begrafnis gee wat hy so graag wou hê. Ek is bitter en kan dit nie verwerk dat my boeta op so ’n tragiese manier moes sterf nie!” So sê ’n hartseer Sandra de Jongh uit Pretoria van haar broer John Smith (61), se onnodige dood. Smith het jare lank koekies en koeksisters in Uitenhage verkoop en daar-deur ‘n baie geliefde dorpskarakter geword. Volgens polisiewoordvoerder a.o Gerda Swart, was daar verlede Saterdagoggend omstreeks 02:00 na bewering ’n bakleiery voor Jaggers Bar in Caledonstraat waar John Smith parkeertoesig gedoen het. ’n Onbekende man het Smith met die vuiste bygedam. “Smith het na bewering weggehardloop van die toneel en by die nabygeleë huis van sy kleindogter ineengesak en gesterf. “Die nadoodse ondersoek dui aan dat hy ’n hartaanval gekry het. Daar is ’n geregtelike doodsondersoek geopen.” Volgens die nadoodse ondersoek het hy aan ’n hartaanval beswyk, maar Smith se familie

is van mening dat die kopbeserings wat hy weens die aanranding opgedoen het, aanleiding tot sy dood gegee het. “Op die fotos wat vir my gestuur is, was dit duidelik dat daar bloed uit die hoek van sy oog gevloei het en dat sy gesig seergekry het. Beeldmateriaal wys ook hoe ’n man agter John aan hardloop. “As dit nie die man se bedoeling was om hom seer te maak nie, hoekom het hy hom bly slaan? “’n Tweede mening van ’n privaat patoloog vir ’n nadoodse ondersoek gaan ons ongeveer

Die Blou Bul-rugbyunie van Pretoria het ’n rugbytrui geskenk om oor John se kis te drapeer. )John Smith se begrafnis word op Sondag, 3 Mei om 10:00 gehou by die Boodskap van die Kruis-kerk, Frankenburgstraat op Uitenhage.

‘Ons weet wat is fout, maar het nie geld nie’ LOURENS SCHOEMAN Die vloedskade wat op Despatch aangerig is, was die gevolg van dreins wat verstop het omdat dit nie behoorlik onderhou was nie, het Frans Swanepoel, ’n voormalige stadsraadslid van die dorp, gesê. Dit veroorsaak dat nie slegs die inwoners se lewens deur die vloedwater bedreig word nie, maar baie van hulle se gesondheid ook weens rou riool wat in strate en slote afvloei. “Rou riool is ’n ontsettende probleem, nie net vir die inwoners van veral Daleview en Reservoir Hills nie, maar ook vir die amptenare wat die stryd met die verstopte riool- en

stormwaterstelsels die hoof moet bied, want dit is vir baie jare swak onderhou. “Die mense van die twee woonbuurte moet gereeld deur die gemors in die rivier loop en dit inasem, terwyl die grond om hul huise muf is wat tot siektes soos tering kan lei. Sondag (gister) is dit twee weke ná die oorstromings, maar die dreins is nog steeds toe. “Ek kan nie verstaan hoe die stadsraad dit oor hul harte kan kry dat die mense in sulke onhigiëniese toestande moet bly nie. Hoe kan ’n mens gesond bly in sulke omstandighede?” het Swanepoel gevra. “Hier en daar is daar aan die dreins gevroetel, maar dit gaan miljoene rande kos om die stormwater-afvoerstelsels weer in ’n ordent-

lik werkende toestand te kry,” het hy gesê. Volgens hom is die grond en vullis in die pype seker al so hard soos sement. Hy het gaan wys hoe die stortreën van die hoërliggende woonbuurte Reservoir Hills en Daleview die strate afgestroom het tot waar dit laer in die dorp deur sementheinings gebars en heuphoogte deur baie huise gespoel het. Die vloedpad is nog duidelik sigbaar al langs Voortrekkerstraat af tot onder in Hoofstraat, van waar dit koers gekry het tot dit uiteindelik die Superspar bereik het. Vloedwater het dié winkel in Rabiestraat kort ná 02:00 daardie oggend oorstroom. Volgens Paul Barnes, die eienaar, was dit die derde keer in vier jaar dat die winkel oor-

spoel is en dat sy skade hierdie keer sowat R700 000 beloop het. “Die amptenare van die munisipaliteit het egter aan my gesê hulle weet wat fout is, maar dat hulle nie die geld het om dit reg te maak nie.” In Langstraat in Reservoir Hills het van die inwoners sinkplate voor hul stoepe opgerig om te keer dat die vuil water nie deur hul huise vloei nie. Die stank in Kruisstraat is ook byna ondraaglik omdat riool nie kan wegvloei nie. Die munisipaliteit is besig om ’n nuwe rioolstelsel tussen Daleview en Reservoir Hills aan te lê, maar dit gaan nog etlike maande neem om te voltooi.

Jayde Panayiotou (28), ’n onderwyseres van Riebeek College Girls High School in Uitenhage, is Dinsdagoggend voor haar huis in Deaconweg, net agter Makro in Kabegapark, ontvoer. “Die bemanning van ’n polisiehelikopter wat deelgeneem het aan die uitgebreide soektog na Panayiotou, het gisteroggend ’n voorwerp uit die lug opgemerk. Lede van die soekspan op die grond het daarna op haar liggaam afgekom,” het polisiewoordvoerder kaptein Sandra Janse van Rensburg gesê. “’n Nadoodse ondersoek sal nou gedoen word om die presiese oorsaak van haar dood vas te stel. “Intussen sal die polisie onverpoos voortgaan met die soektog na die ontvoerders en moordenaars van Panayiotou.” Die polisie het beeldmateriaal in die hande gekry wat die vermeende ontvoerder van ’n Uitenhage-onderwyseres uitwys waar hy by ’n kitsbank in KwaNobuhle geld uit haar rekening trek. Volgens Toni Inggs, Panayiotou se suster, het Panayiotou elke oggend voor haar huis in Deaconweg vir haar saamrygeleentheid na Uitenhage gewag. Blykbaar het Panayiotou enkele minute voor 06:30, die tyd wat sy soggens opgelaai word, nog met ’n onderwyser wat ook in die saamryklub is, op haar selfoon gepraat. “Maar toe haar saamryklub daar stop, was sy nie daar nie,” het Inggs gesê. Een van die lede van die saamryklub het haar man, Christopher, met wie sy onlangs getroud is, gebel om te vra waar Panayiotou

voerder, bevestig. Die boodskap van Panayiotou se vermeende ontvoering het soos ’n veldbrand op sosiale platforms versprei. In ’n besige Matanzimastraat is die klein Nedbank-OTM, langs ’n begrafnisonderneming, as die bank uitgewys waar geld vroeër uit Panayiotou se rekening onttrek is. Teen 14:00 het die polisie beslag gelê op dié OTM se beeldmateriaal wat die man se gesig wys wat vermoedelik geld uit Panayiotou se rekening onttrek het. Volgens Labans is geen ooggetuies nog opgespoor nie, maar ’n vrou wat in Deaconweg woon, het blykbaar aan die polisie genoem dat sy drie verdagte mans Dinsdagoggend in dié straat sien staan het. Intussen het Marilyn Woods, skoolhoof, gesê die nuus oor Panayiotou se verdwyning en dood is “hartverskeurend”. Woods het dié nuus eers tydens die laaste skoolperiode met die senior leerders gedeel. “Die meeste leerders het trane in hul oë gehad toe ek vra dat hulle moet saam bid. “Maar dit was die onderwysers wat die nuus die moeilikste hanteer het.” )Enigiemand met inligting oor die voorval kan die Kabega-polisiekantoor by 041 397 6801 skakel óf vir Inggs by 076 526 7174. Three of the ten Mrs Commonwealth 2015 finalists hail from Uitenhage.

A mother of three, Hendrika Simons, is one of the three women from Uitenhage named as finalists in the Mrs Commonwealth SA 2015 pageant.

Charmaine Hendricks, Hendrika Simons and Lynn Liberty recently attended the finalists’ workshop and as part of their journey each has to raise a minimum sponsorship of R12 000. These funds are utilized to cover various costs and to facilitate social and upliftment programmes. The registered charity of choice to benefit from the Mrs Commonwealth 2015 pageant is PinkDrive. Charmaine Hendriks, the current Mrs Uitenhage and Mrs Mzanzi Africa 2014 finalist is planning to host a modelling pageant in association with the Cancer Association of South Africa with the aim to raise funds, supporting PinkDrive. “It is a dream of mine to have =Charmaine my own events company through which I want to empower women. Women should not stop following their passion in life the moment they get married,” said Charmaine. The modelling pageant she is organising will be held at the Allanridge Civic Centre on July 31st at 18:00. Admission will be R20 and to enter the pageant the fee is R50. There will be a special guest speaker and models will have to fit in

Hendrika is known for hosting beauty pageants and it was during the last event, a Mr & Miss Valentine competition, that Mrs Commonwealth South Africa 2014/2015, Marinda Herbst convinced her to enter this year’s Mrs Commonwealth competition. As part of her fund-raising efforts, Hendrika will host a PinkDrive breakfast during June. She is passionate about youth and said, “I want to inspire girls to value their lives and not to get involved in all kinds of irresponsible activities. Respect yourself and others and stick to the basic rules of life. Teenage pregnancies are a huge problem in our community and I want to address it through the events that I am hosting,”

Al het sy nou wel verlede Vrydag haar 100ste jaar gevier, het sy gedans soos hulle in die jare dertig gedans het. “Veral toe hulle my gunsteling liedjie ‘Wees my leidsman’ speel,” sê Mina van Heerden (100) van Bergsig in Kirkwood. Om haar sit haar kinders, kleinkinders, agterkleinkinders en iewers in die huis slaap haar enigste agteragterkleinkind. Bo die gelag van die kinders wat soos orrelpype staan, praat van Heerden: “Op my ouderdom is dit jou kinders wat die ware geluk in die lewe is.” Te midde van al die goed en sleg wat Van Heerden al in haar tien dekades op aarde gesien het, meen sy daar is net een rede hoekom sy nóg 100 jaar in dié lewe sal wil wees. “Ek weet nou al genoeg van wat die ou wêreld het om te bied. Al wat die lewe die moeite werd maak, is jou kinders se geluk. “Ek sal aanhou wil leef om al my kinders se kinders te leer ken.” Bettie Nel, Van Heerden se oudste dogter, sê dan “my ma sal maklik nóg honderd jaar kan maak.” “Ja,” sê Eva Stator, tweede oudste dogter.

Net ’n rokie gemaak.” Was dit ook nie vir ’n motorongeluk naby Uitenhage waarin sy haar linkerskouer beseer het nie, was daar ook geen seer “beendere” vandag nie. “Nou ja, as die dokter sê ek is oukei, en ek sê ek is oukei, dan is daar mos niks wat my keer om op my verjaarsdag behoorlik te dans – nogal in die kerksaal – soos toe ons jonk was en verjaarsdagpartytjies gehou het nie.”

As such, sellers need to price their property accordingly to ensure that they will attract the right buyers to the property. Goslett shares six common pricing mistakes that sellers should try to avoid: 1. Overpricing Probably the most common mistake that sellers make when it comes to pricing is inflating their asking price to make room for negotiation. 2. Disregarding recent home sale prices There is often a difference between what homes are listed for and what they

actually sell for. An experienced real estate professional will have access to this kind of information and will be able to provide valuable guidance to sellers in correctly determining a fair market value, he says. 3. Not considering online search parameters Around 90% of all home buyers will first search online before using any other form of media to look for a property. As such, it is important to consider this when setting an asking price. 4. Being over creative with the price Choosing a round number is far easier for all the parties involved.
