Spiritual dancing at sports centre El Roi Prophetic Dancers are hosting a dance production at the Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday. Guest dancers include Prophetic Praise from Cape Town as well as Free2Dance from Port Elizabeth. Various

Pictures tell the tale of the Andersons HEILIE COMBRINCK
“
Use a picture. It’s worth a thousand words!”
This quote dates back to 1911 when Arthur Brisbane expressed his thoughts regarding the power of a single still image. Well, this expression is still true after 102 years! In Uitenhage, pictures, photography and videography are synonymous with the Anderson family. For the past 40 years Daryl and his wife Annette are familiar professionals seen at weddings and schools taking pictures. “If a photo tells a story, I can tell you the photographer who took that shot could tell you much more,” said Daryl Anderson from Photo Centre at Binnehof Centre in Uitenhage. “There always is that special feel to a photo
which catches your eye and urges you to capture it. And I can tell you it sometimes is difficult to delete some of these photos.” Daryl’s passion for photography was inherited by his daughter Melissa who established her own studio, Melissa Anderson Photography in Graaff Reinet Road, Uitenhage. Her expertise was honoured after being nominated the Best Wedding Photographer in the Eastern Cape during 2010, 2011 and 2012. Melissa Anderson Photography this year celebrates its 10th year in the photography and printing industry. Daryl started taking wedding photos at the age of 15 with a Yashica camera. He bought it with money earned during school holidays working at Brocketts Sports for 5 cents a day. Melissa received her first camera when she was 6 years old
and at the age of 9 she assisted her dad, taking Christmas photos and earned R5 a day. “My dad has taught me the techniques of photography and his passion was my inspiration. Nothing ever fell in my lap. I had to work very hard, but the sweat and tears were all worth it as today we share our passion for taking quality pictures. “His best advice ever was, you are only as good as your last shot,” said Melissa. According to Daryl, “She received no handouts. Melissa really had to work hard to achieve the successes she today enjoys. With taking photos at more than 4 000 weddings, I’ve learned a lot and therefore tried to equip her with the best advice to prevent her from making the mistakes I made.” In his teenage years, Daryl built himself a dark

room to develop his photos. Apparently many of his mother’s kitchen utensils “disappeared” and were “transformed” to extend the range of developing tools he needed. “Developing photos was very exciting as you literally saw the image come alive.” Melissa said the most difficult part is choosing photos. “I can’t choose. I know the feeling I felt of each shot I took. It sometimes is heartbreaking to see clients not choosing the photos I know are the best ones. “My motto in life is: ‘Under promise and over deliver’. To give something special to my clients and to give more than what they expect,” said Melissa. The passion for photography that Daryl and Melissa share emphasizes the saying that “beauty indeed is in the eye of the beholder.”

VW road race on Saturday

The annual Volkswagen 10km Road Race presented by the VWSA Amateur Athletic Club will be held on Saturday. The start and finish points are at Brandwag sports field and the actions starts at 07:00. This race has EPA league status and has been well supported by runners over the past few years. Call to use less water The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Portfolio Committee for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy issued a call to residents to reduce consumption of water by at least 10%. Barry Martin, Director for Water and Sanitation, said this precautionary call forms part of a plan to take the community on board from the onset regarding developments regarding our water supply. “Although our dams are relatively full, we are seeing a gradual decline in dam levels and we intend to keep our consumers on
board by making information available to them regularly. “With this call there are no punitive measures taken against consumers. “The benefit of saving water now prolongs the availability of our current water supply in the dams until our next rainfall season,” Martin added. Walter Shaidi, Acting Executive Director for Infrastructure and Engineering, said the public call is in addition to efforts by his directorate to curb water leakages and augmentation strategies.

he bikers of the Evolution Motorcycle Club visited Minette House in Uitenhage to spend some time with the 32 mentally challenged adults and staff of the institution. The residents were not only treated with a braai, but the bikers also donated 36 duvet sets and linen, as well as an industrial washing machine to the institution. “The total donation could be more than R8 000. ACT Fire also contributed towards
the duvet sets,” said Gerrie Bezuidenhout, Chairperson of Huis Minette Trustees. “The Trustees of Minette House would like to thank the Evolution Motorcycle Club and all the businesses and the public who made this donation. “Minette House really needs the support to enable this institution us to keep its doors open and renders quality care to all the residents.”

Angling competition at Sundays The Mackay Bridge Angling Club (MBAC) on the Sundays River will be hosting its 34th Annual fishing competition from 23 25 August. The MBAC All Clubs is the biggest angling event in the Eastern Cape with more than 280 anglers – from as far a field as Knysna - competing for various prizes. The competition is conservation orientated and will be a “tag & release” event, which also assists researchers in docu-
menting the type of fish caught, length, weight etc. The tag and release is professionally done by Dr Paul Cowley from The South African Institute for Biodiversity at Rhodes University. The competition is registered on the EP angling calendar and is fished under the rules of the Eastern Province Light Tackle Boat Angling Association.
