Thís after people became aware of the plight of animals and reacted in a way never seen before at the Uitenhage & District SPCA. “It is sad that it took a disaster like this to prove to us that we are privileged, blessed and fortunate to have a community who supports us unconditionally,” said Deirdre Swift, manager of the Uitenhage & District SPCA. The local SPCA fulfilled a key role in the rescuing of trapped animals, domestic as well as livestock, during the recent wild fires which caused havoc. A plea message for donations and assistance to help the SPCA was sent via social media and the response was

overwhelming. “The public’s response has been phenomenal. It is a very emotional thing. When we drove in here at the kennels on the Saturday after the raging fires started to cause havoc, we were overwhelmed by the sight that met our eyes,” said Swift. “The assistance was fantastic! Alpha Parm donated much-needed medical supplies and Mount Croix veterinarians gave us pro bono services and are currently treating animals which were fire victims. “Ikhala Wild Life veterinarian services from Grahamstown were absolutely amazing. Emily and her team drove all the way here and assisted us free of charge by KENNISGEWING treating pigs and cattle with burnt hooves as well as KRAGONDERBREKING: SONDAG, 25 JUNIE 2017 cats and dogs injured by the fire,” DESPATCH-GEBIED said Swift.

Animals in foster care

An estimated 130 animals, which include cats, dogs and livestock were rescued by the Uitenhage SPCA in co-operation with the Humansdorp SPCA and Animal Anti Cruelty League from Port Elizabeth. “We could home only a limited number of dogs as the Uitenhage kennels were full, so the balance of the animals were sent out to foster. Generally this is something that we are not allowed to do, but it was a crisis situation and the animals had to be homed,” said Swift. As people come to claim their animals, the SPCA obviously recalled the fosters so that they could be accommodated at the kennels. Unfortunately they still have quite a few in foster care and at the kennels.

Christelle Erasmus said another heartwarming aspect was that whilst she, Swift and some SPCA members were trapped by the fire at Woodridge, the rest of the SPCA members and all the volunteers flocked to the kennels and took full control of matters. The public also not only donated goods for the animals, but also brought in cooked meals, food and drinks for all the volunteers in the field. “It was just something I have never seen,” said Swift.

Firefighters thank public for awesome support

The wind is picking up speed again!”

With these words Station Commander at the Uitenhage Fire Station, Ewert Meyer, was still on high alert as he looked at the sky, which for nearly ten days was covered in thick smoke from the devastating wildfires fuelled by strong winds. Brave firefighters, men and women as well as volunteers worked tirelessly to protect lives, properties and the environment from this inferno. Public salute firefighters The public salute these firefighters and profusely thank them for their dedication. Masses of food items, clothing, blankets and necessities were donated to the fire stations. Cards with inspirational messages written by children to the firefighters were dropped-off by nursery schools. Flames were high, but the helping spirit of the public was much higher and that is what builds responsible communities.

Donations kept spirits high “From the depth of our hearts, we as firefighters would like to thank the people from Uitenhage and Despatch for their support,” said an emotional and thankful Meyer. “Firefighters really suffered and battled against gale force winds, bad weather, immense heat and sky high flames. And let me tell you, one gets very thirsty and hungry out there! “Hamburgers, soup, curry bunnies, energy drinks and sweets, you name it ... these food supplies were like manna from heaven. We continuously took these food donations to our firefighters and it kept their spirits high whilst fighting the raging fires,” said Meyer. He said that a total of about 40 firefighters from Uitenhage were involved, around the clock in shifts, trying to dampen down the fires at Woodridge, Van Stadens Gorge, Elands River and the Rocklands areas. The clothing received from the public was sorted by Susan van Schalkwyk from the Uitenhage Fire Station and distributed to

Your support gave us the extra boost we desperately needed and made it possible for us to do what we had to do under extremely difficult conditions - winning the fight against raging fires!” said Meyer. What is also pleasing to Meyer is the growing need within smaller communties for advice and guidance from the fire station in how to mobilize themselves to help fight fires.

Veldbrande vlam weer op in Van Stadensravyn LOURENS SCHOEMAN Veldbrande het Maandag weer in die gebied tussen Nelson Mandelabaai en Kouga uitgebreek weens ’n sterk wind en hitte wat smeulende boomstompe laat opvlam het. Die grootste bekommernis is die brand aan die oostekant van die Van Stadensravyn agter Woodridge College. Kouga het Maandag brandbestryders gestuur om dié van Nelson Mandelabaai by te staan. “Geen eiendom is egter tans in gevaar nie. Ons spanne is daar om die situasie te monitor,” het woordvoerder van die metro, Kupido Baron gesê. Volgens Elza van Lingen, uitvoerende burgemeester van die Kouga-munisipaliteit, het

brande gedurende die naweek ook weer in die Longmore-gebied opgevlam, maar die brandbestryders kon dit gou blus. “Twee weermaghelikopters het die naweek etlike plekke waar brande gedreig het om weer op te vlam met waterbomme geteiken. Elkeen van die helikopters het sowat 60 000 liter op die smeulende gebiede uitgestort,” het sy gesê. Boere staan die brandbestryders by met opruimingswerk, veral in die Thornhillgebied. Nuuskieriges belemmer egter steeds die brandbestrydings-operasie op die N2 en R102, het Van Lingen gesê. “Ons vra weer dat mense hierdie gebiede so ver as moontlik vermy. Bestuurders word ook versoek om spoed te verminder wanneer hulle in hierdie gebiede bestuur.”

Metro: Pay traffic fines or face arrest REPORTER

he Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has warned everyone with outstanding traffic fines to either appear in court or pay the fine before the specified date. Failure to do so will result in a warrant of arrest being issued. This, after reckless statements encouraging the public not to pay their fines, surfaced resulting in a huge impact on the legal processes of the municipality in which hundreds and thousands of fines have not been paid. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said that currently only 25% of the people who have received fines or summons to appear in court have actually paid their fines or appeared in court. “To date a staggering R54,8 million of outstanding warrants have not been paid, relating to approximately 64 000 outstanding cases and more than R347 million of unpaid fines, 1.1 million cases in total – which excludes warrant-related cases – are currently registered in the system. “These have not yet been converted to warrants and accordingly the public can still pay them or appear in court on the said court dates stipulated in the fines.” Mniki added that the municipality has engaged with the National Department of Transport to implement the Natis Block on

relicensing vehicles, meaning that vehicle owners with outstanding warrants will not be able to relicense their motor vehicles until the outstanding warrants have been settled. “As means of ensuring lawlessness and safety, the Traffic Department in conjunction with the Metro Police will be manning roadblocks over the next three months. Any person stopped who has a warrant of arrest outstanding will be arrested and brought before court.” The following fines have been increased with immediate effect: 1. Driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s licence increased from R1 000 to R1 500. 2. Failing to comply with a stop sign increased from R1 000 to

R1 500. 3. Failing to stop at a red traffic signal R1 000 to R1 500. 4. Holding a cell phone device in your hand or any part of body while driving from R800 to R1 500. Members of the public who want to pay their outstanding traffic fines can also pay via the municipal website under the heading EServices, subsection E Fines. The Budget and Treasury Directorate will also be installing speedpoint machines at the Traffic Department and customer care centres to assist with the payment of fines.

Some know the rules - some not. Then some think they know and usually lose their temper, but in fact are the fools not knowing the difference between a mini circle and a traffic circle. There are two different kinds of traffic circles in Nelson Mandela Metropole, the single lane mini circles and the larger two lane traffic circles or roundabouts. There is a new mini traffic circle in Cuyler Street near the traffic department to improve the Cuyler and Mitchell Street intersection and also to serve as a traffic calming measure. There are no roundabouts or twolane traffic circles in Uitenhage.

How to go around .Mini circle: first come - first go

Mini circles, like the new one in Cuyler Street, have a red and white upside-down triangular board indicating traffic to proceed in a clockwise direction. This means motorists approaching a mini circle have to slow down and give way to vehicles that have already crossed any yield line. In other words, first come – first go! Mini circles are similar to a four-way stop, with the only difference that you do not have to stop, but slow down. So, when it is a single lane circle with a red regulatory yield sign then it’s a mini circle: First come – first go!

.Traffic circle/Roundabout: right go - left stay

If you believe in the Eastern Cape, then get ready for SANRAL’s new project; the N2 Wild Coast Road. This is 80 km of new road and bridges that will travel directly from Umtamvuna through Port Grosvenor and Lusikisiki to Ndwalane, reducing driving time from the border of KwaZulu-Natal to Mthatha by up to 3 hours.

On approaching a traffic circle/roundabout, slow down or stop and always give right of way to traffic coming from your right. In other words: right go – left stay. Traffic circles or roundabouts are usually found at busy crossings to assist in traffic flow by giving way to the right. As you have to switch from lanes, motorists should always use indicators to signal when they are going to turn either to exit the circle or to change to the inner lane.

Nou wil Janecke R50 000 insamel om Jackie te help met ‘n prostese te kry. “Ons het kopgekrap oor hoe om vir hom fondse in te samel. Janecke besluit toe sy wil Lady Slipper uitklim. Welcome completed his 10th Comrades in a time of 7:28:00 and earned a silver medal. Now he is the proud wearer of a Comrades Marathon Green Number.

“I will wear this number with pride. It has been hard work, but I enjoy running,” said Welcome Loliwe who currently trains for the Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon which takes place on June 24th at Pollok Beach. To date there are more than 13 000 athletes who have earned their place on the Comrades Marathon Green Number Roll of Honour. This means that Welcome retains his Comrades Marathon race number (54652) in perpetuity. He now is a member of an exclusive band of individuals who have experienced a special relationship with this ultimate human race.

The criteria for inclusion in the Comrades Marathon Green Number Roll of Honour is 3 wins or 5 golds or 10-plus medals. Welcome is the only athlete from Uitenhage who this year earned his Green Number. Some of the well known Green Number presenters include Bruce Fordyce, Poobie Naidoo, Blanche Moila and Andrew Kelehe. Loliwe said he is saving every bit of money he earns to buy himself a brand new pair of Nike running shoes. These shoes he would like to wear for the 2018 Comrades, when running with his Green Number.

PE Oval Track Raceway will host the final of three national qualifier events on Saturday. Race fans can look forward to action-packed racing with approximately 60 cars expected to participate in the evening’s activities. Refreshment stalls will be located around the circuit and spectators are welcome to park around it at no extra charge.
