Literacy support to learners, teachers and parents A

s part of the legacy of making sure that all learners in Uitenhage are functionally literate by the end of Grade 3, the Volkswagen Community Trust opened the first Literacy Centre in Uitenhage. The aim of the centre, located in Ntlemeza Primary School, is to provide structured literacy support to learners, teachers and parents. “At Volkswagen we strive to make a real difference in the community. That is why we support Early Childhood Development and are so committed to the VW Community Trust Legacy Literacy Programme”, said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa. Volkswagen has spent over R600 000 at Ntlemeza to date. This includes a revamp of

the Grade R Classrooms, the establishment of a literacy centre and a brand-new netball court. Going forward, Volkswagen will be responsible for all the operational costs of the centre. The literacy centre will ensure that all at risk learners at Ntlemeza Primary school are identified early and then given daily structured support by well-trained volunteers and literacy practitioners. Six volunteers have been contracted to the centre already and their work is already showing results. Themba Kojana, Head of Department for the Eastern Cape Department of Education, commended the partnership between Volkswagen, Shine and the education department and committed R7.9million to Ntlemeza

Research indicates that more than 60% of South African children cannot read for meaning by the end of Grade 3, so in 2016, Volkswagen working with Rhodes University and Professor Lily Pretorius (a renowned expert in the field of early literacy development) designed and conducted a baseline survey in 7 schools in KwaNobuhle. “We realised that the only way to overcome the key challenges in Education is through collaboration, partnership and commitment to these five focus areas. “That is why VWSA spends 80% of our CSI Budget on education,” said Thomas Schaefer.

The R334 road between Uitenhage and Motherwell has become a high risk road known for hi-jackings and it has hot spot areas for robberies, rape and even murder. Therefore the Uitenhage CPF with their mission to “Stand together against crime” adhere to the need to have signs erected, warning the public and road-users about the danger. The CPF sourced Paul Müller from Star Cabs to sponsor these sign boards. “It is especially dangerous at the T-junc-

tion area where the Amanzi road links with the R334. Road-users have to be mindful and are requested to take extra precaution there,” said Pat Unsworth, chairperson of the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum (CPF). “The message of the sign is ‘absolutely no stopping’. When a sign entails a circle it is an order. If it entails a triangle it gives you a choice. These boards show the circle so you have no choice. Please do not stop where these signs have been erected.” The CPF work in co-operation with the Uitenhage police, which on a regular basis conducts road blocks on the R334.

This is according to a recent report to the Metro’s standing committee on economic development, tourism and agriculture. According to the report, “Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality experienced an increase in backyard mechanics in the automotive industry and related services. Many of these mechanics have developed excellent skills through experience. “One of the roles of local government is to promote socio-economic development in partnership with industry role players and other

departments.” The Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative launched the development programme for an informal automotive service centre in July last year to help backyard mechanics. In partnership with the business development company Filpro, skills have been developed and those informal businesses were accredited as small businesses. Currently, 30 car businesses of Uitenhage and Despatch are part of the programme. “The directorate of economic development, tourism and agriculture and Filpro held a meeting last month and it was agreed that the partnership should be extended to the larger Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.” A report on the cost implications would be submitted to the standing committee’s next meeting.

or the first time in many years, real wrestling action will be seen in Uitenhage, this time at the Wings & Wheels Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show which will be held on 31st March and 1st April at the Uitenhage Airfield. Wrestlers from the internationally known World Wrestling Professionals (WWP), a South African professional wrestling promotion, will showcase their skills. WWP is owned by Mark Beale and Abdul Kadir and it is heavily influenced by American mainstream wrestling. The action starts on Friday, March 31st at 18:30 with some amateur wrestling and at 19:30 the WWP wrestling show starts. Highlights of the festival include a challenge between a vintage car and vintage aeroplane and a challenge between a powerful V8 vehicle against a fast and modern aeroplane. The air show and aerobatics will start at 14:00. Wings & Wheels also boasts one the best extreme 4x4 challenge tracks. Vehicles worth millions of rands will tackle these obstacles and show spectators their unbelievable power and mechanical abilities. The previous tournament was held during October 2016 and attracted approximately 190 young soccer players from the area. “Young players just have to register and then there will be ballots to draw and teams will be compiled. The team members will be given time to decide on a name and then the games will kick-off,” said Adekunle.

All local young and enthusiastic soccer players, girls and boys, are invited to a “Friendship” tournament which will be held during the forthcoming school holiday at Jubilee Park Sports Fields in Uitenhage. What is different from the Swiftresponse Street Soccer Classic (Friendship) tournament is that it is not teams invited to enter, but individuals.
