n the latest incident in Uitenhage, a man was swindled out of a substantial amount of cash, after he visited a local bank to withdrow cash for paying an account. “After his visit to the bank the complainant walked towards his vehicle when he noticed an envelope containing money being dropped by a man walking in front of him. The complainant picked up the envelope to hand it back to the man, but then a third person suddenly appeared and started questioning the complainant regarding the envelope,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The two unknown men then informed the complainant that they were police officials investigating these types of cases and that he must accompany them. The complainant did what was requested and they drove to Despatch. “The men requested the two envelopes – the one that he picked up and the other envelope containing the money he withdrew. They informed him to step inside a building and enquire inside for the detective. The suspects then drove off with the envelopes,” said W/O Swart. The complainant enquired inside the building and then realized that he had been conned by the men. “Always be alert when visiting a bank, be aware of people making conversation, in or outside the bank. “If there is doubt in your mind regarding so-called police officials, request their identification cards and go to your nearest police station where clarity can be obtained,” said W/O Swart.
