I
n the latest incident in Uitenhage, a man was swindled out of a substantial amount of cash, after he visited a local bank to withdrow cash for paying an account. “After his visit to the bank the complainant walked towards his vehicle when he noticed an envelope containing money being dropped by a man walking in front of him. The complainant picked up the envelope to hand it back to the man, but then a third person suddenly appeared and started questioning the complainant regarding the envelope,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The two unknown men then informed the complainant that they were police officials investigating these types of cases and that he must accompany them. The complainant did what was requested and they drove to Despatch. “The men requested the two envelopes – the one that he picked up and the other envelope containing the money he withdrew. They informed him to step inside a building and enquire inside for the detective. The suspects then drove off with the envelopes,” said W/O Swart. The complainant enquired inside the building and then realized that he had been conned by the men. “Always be alert when visiting a bank, be aware of people making conversation, in or outside the bank. “If there is doubt in your mind regarding so-called police officials, request their identification cards and go to your nearest police station where clarity can be obtained,” said W/O Swart.

U’hage K9 dogs best in country HEILIE COMBRINCK Two police dogs and their handlers from the Uitenhage K9 Unit barked their way to the top during the South African Working Dogs competition which was held in Gauteng. W/O Johann Strydom and his dog Max (a biological blood and semen dog) walked away with bronze at the Nationals as well as the Grand Challenge. “Dogs from various training disciplines such as security, municipalities, Correctional Service as well as privately owned canines enter the competition which is held annually,” said police spokespeson Lt Col Priscilla Naidu. The Grand Challenge is when only 15 dogs are selected and compete, thereafter going on to compete for the ultimate which is the National. W/O “Skollie” Bothma and his dog Indy proudly walked away with bronze at the Grand Challenge and gold at the Nationals. Indy is a narcotics dog. Both handler and dog are the first in the Eastern Cape to receive their National colours. “Prior to the competition, Indy was hospitalized for a week and was released on the day to participate in the competition. With no training, she eased her way to gold,” said Lt Col Naidu.

SPCA copper coin man retiring HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage SPCA’s “copper coin man” is sadly retiring at the end of February 2013. What started out as an one-man effort to raise R200 through copper coin collections in need of the financially strained SPCA, roller-coastered with the support of the community to an astonishing R238 000 to date! “I am an outdoor man and fond of animals. I can not stand the idea of them being neglected or not being taken care of. When I heard about the SPCA’s financial situation, I knew from my heart I’ve got to do some-
thing,” said Odin Moorcroft (80) spontaneously named the “SPCA coin man”. During the Spring of 2008, as a SPCA volunteer, he decided to beautify a few bottles and to start collecting copper coins. Since then this project escalated and he currently has 60 bottles at various businesses throughout Uitenhage and Despatch. Moorcroft soon realized that he needed to have a scale as it is much more efficient to weigh the respective coins than counting them. His son, Ian, loaned his dad an electronic scale which made it a lot easier. “I figured out that 450g of 5 cents is valued R5; 200g 10 cents is R10 with
175g of 20 cents counting as R10 and 100g of 50 cents is valued R10.” “What is of interest is the bags and bags of old coins and coins from foreign countries. This might be worth something to collectors, but unfortunately it can not be exchanged or utilized in aid of the SPCA,” said Moorcroft. Nowadays, even whilst shopping, he will be surprised with residents offering some coins in support of the project. The copper coin collection even reached the ears of a former Uitenhage woman now residing in the Congo, and she donated a total of R1 000 towards the project. “I hope by the end of next month that this copper coin collection could reach the quarter of a million mark. It would be a milestone and decent amount for me to call it a day!” Moorcroft would like to thank local businesses and the public for their friendliness and support of this project. Also thank you to the following: local schools especially College Hill and Convent Primary, clubs, local hospitals, Vet Clinics at Despatch and Uitenhage and The Vet Shop. “Also thank you to my wife, Connie, for helping in the counting of the money as well as my son Ian for the loan of his scale,” said Moorcroft. Chairperson of the SPCA managing board, Christelle Erasmus said the public will be advised as to his successor. “Please help us to end off his (Moorcroft’s) reign on a high ‘note’ and collect as many coppers as possible until the end of February 2013,” said Erasmus.

Dit was sy privaat ambulans wat hy as ‘n geskenk van die Koningin van Engeland ontvang het. Van Willing snr. sê hulle sukses word toegeskryf aan die feit dat hulle passievol oor hulle werk is, self aan diens is en niks afskeep nie. Elke aspek van ‘n begrafnis verdien kwaliteit aandag. “Families kom terug na 30 jaar. na Opperman was ongetwyfeld oor dekades heen vir alle Vroue Landbouvereniginglede ‘n model-dame in alle opsigte om na te streef! Sy is Maandagoggend, 14 Januarie in die ouderdom van 86-jaar oorlede na ‘n lang siekbed. Mev. Opperman het as 23jarige vrou by die Uitenhage VLV-tak aangesluit. In 1955 word sy gekies as sekretaresse, ‘n amp wat sy met onderskeiding 54 jaar lank beklee het! “Sy was tot verlede jaar ‘n aktiewe lid en ’n erelid van die tak en nie sommer ‘n aktiwiteit gemis nie, met rolstoel en al,” het Marietjie van der Walt, voorsitter van die =Ina Opperman Uitenhage VLV-tak gesê. Volgens Marietjie was sy 63 jaar lank lid van die VLV. Menige kere het sy die beker vir die meeste
punte in die tak gekry en baie van haar handwerk het na konferensies en kongresse deurgedring. “Gedurende die 54 jaar as sekretaresse het sy gesorg vir die tak se plakboeke en dié kosbare geskiedenis is die erflating aan ons tak en ons nageslag! Gedurende die jaar wat ‘n prys vir die beste plakboek uitgeloof is, het sy die prys na ons tak gebring.” Gedurende 2000 ontvang Ina Opperman ‘n oorkonde vir 50-jaar diens aan Uitenhage VLKV-tak. Twee jaar gelede het sy by die Sirkelkonferensie ‘n “Dankie-sê” sertifikaat van ontvang en het by die geleentheid die pryse en bekers met kruk onder die arm, uitgedeel. Nuwe koorleier vir mannekoor Despatch Mannekoor gaan nou weer uit volle bors sing met die aanstelling van ‘n nuwe koorleier. Amanda Gous, ’n oud-bekende in musiekkringe in die omgewing, is na ’n klompie jare in Bloemfontein weer terug op Despatch en het ingewillig om die leisels as koorleier oor te neem. Sy is veral bekend vir haar musiek-begeleiding en individuele sowel as kooronderrig. Terwyl Amanda in Bloemfontein woonagtig was het sy groot sukses as koorleier van sowel ’n manne- en skeunskoor gehad. Despatch Mannekoor is ‘n interdenominale koor en mans van Uitenhage, Despatch en omgewing wat ’n passie vir sang geniet word uitgenooi om by die koor in te skakel. Geen musiekopleiding is nodig nie aangesien alle liedere op gehoor aangeleer word.

Elk van dié skooltassies wat deur Solidariteit Helpende Hand uitgedeel is, bevat ’n skêr, gom, skerpmaker, uitveër, liniaal, uitdraaikryte, inkleurpotlode, HB potlode, pennesakkie, witbord, witbordpenne en –uitveër, inkleurboek, waskryt, klei, waterverf, legkaart, springtou en ’n tennisbal. ’n Geletterdheidsboekie van die Bybelgenootskap is vanjaar as ’n bonus in die tassies gesit. Dié tassies is by 14 skole in die Oos-Kaap uitgedeel, onder andere by Laerskool Winterberg en Laerskool Innes op Uitenhage. Die nasionale Skooltassieprojek is in 2007 begin en sedertdien is 12 500 tassies reeds uitgedeel. Vanjaar sal sowat 4 000 tassies weer regoor die land uitgedeel word. “Helpende Hand volg ’n beleid van opheffing deur opleiding,” sê dr. Danie Brink, die uitvoerende hoof van Helpende Hand.

Dié fees van sport word deur Superspar Despatch en die Nelson Mandela Metropool geborg en op die dorp se sentrale sportvelde en by die skool aangebied op 22 en 23 Maart. Skole van so ver as Danielskuil, Queenstown en Oos-Londen het reeds hul deelname bevestig sowel as die plaaslike skole wat jaarliks hier kragte meet. Skole wat vanjaar vir die eerste keer aan die sportfees gaan deelneem sluit onder andere Marlow Landbouskool en Hoërskool Nico Malan in. Daar word deur die organiseerders beoog om ‘n gekombineerde span vanuit die Noordelike areas sowel as ’n gekombineerde span van die Motherwell area by die fees te hê. Die hokkie- en netbalwedstryd sal beslis sorg vir goeie vertonings. Netbalwedstryde wat in die Ernest Swanepoelsaal gespeel word is jaarliks ’n hoogtepunt vir die deelnemers. Die gewilde dansvertonings tydens die fees sal oudergewoonte weer vir goeie vermaak sorg.
