HEILIE COMBRINCK Ironically, Cannon Hill which once made an ideal look-out point for the safety of Uitenhage in protecting its residents, has now become the playground of vagrants. All four ornamental gates which were erected during 1953 at the entrance to Cannon Hill, to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, have mysteriously disappeared. “This is shocking. These impressive gates most probably have been sold as scrap metal. Don’t tell me a scrap metal dealer would not have recognised it as being stolen from a historic site,” said Councillor Pieter Terblanche. Apart from the mysterious disappearing of the ornamental gates, it seems that there also is confusion among municipal departments as to whose responsibility this historic site is. “Officials from the department of parks and recreation said Cannon Hill is not their responsibility and that it falls under the jurisdiction of the department of arts and culture as this is a national monument. The latter also seems not to know whose responsibility

REQUEST: PUBLIC’S INVESTMENT IN LEARNER’S FUTURE
Local learner chosen to perform in LA A learner from Bergsig Special School in Uitenhage was chosen for “Team South Africa 2014” to represent the country at an international level at the World Championships for Performing Arts which will be held in Los Angeles, USA, from 7 to 23 July 2014. Nkosinathi Kilana, a Grade 10 learner, represented the Eastern Cape at the South African Championships for Performing Arts in Rustenburg (3-13 April) in the categories Drama and Dance. Bergsig sponsored his participation for this championship and the principal Deon Wolmarans and drama teacher Luana Bester accompanied him to Rustenburg. “During this event, there were 1 600 contestants representing all the provinces in South Africa. The standards were very high and

Nkosinathi did exceptionally well,” said Luana Bester. “For a first timer, he received gold, silver and bronze medals in the category for drama. He received a silver for dance and he was presented with the overall winner award in drama for his age group.” According to the principal, Deon Wolmarans, being selected to represent South Africa on the international stage is a tremendous opportunity for a learner from a special school. “Neither Nkosinathi nor the school has the resources to finance the costs involved in attending this international event in Los Angeles. The total cost is estimated at R90 000. “The public’s investment in this learner’s future by way of a sponsor will be highly appreciated,” said Wolmarans.
The payments, in order to participate in Los Angeles, must be finalized by the following dates: 25 April – R8 260; 10 May – R14 108; 5 May – R53 655. Local air fares and pocket money – R13 977. “If we miss any deadline the learner will

ie HTS Daniel Pienaar se 119de bestaansjaar word tydens die naweek van 9 tot 11 Mei gevier. Die skool is in 1895 gestig deur ds. Daniel Pienaar, die destydse predikant by NGK Uitenhage Moeder-gemeente, met die doel om jong seuns tegniese vaardighede aan te leer om ‘n produktiewe bydrae tot die samelewing te maak. Volgens die huidige skoolhoof Nico Claassen, is die skool aanvanklik met 30 seuns begin en is getalle oor die afgelope aantal jare konstant in die omgewing van 850 leerders. “Daniel Pienaar is die oudste en ook een van die bekendste tegniese skole in die land. Die huidige personeel, leerders, talle trotse oudskoliere en ondersteuners, herdenk en vier derhalwe met groot opwinding, trots en dankbaarheid elke jaar die stigting van die skool,” het Claassen gesê. Lions support local feeding project The Lions Club of South Africa initiated a Feed the Nation – one plate at a time campaign with the aim of alleviating the need to feed the hungry. The campaign is based on three main principals: raising funds to buy food, sourcing nutritional food and distributing a wholesome meal to those in need. Alida Davis, founder of the Underprivileged Children’s Ministry (UCM) provides meals to both the poor and destitute in the Uitenhage area. She has been helping all those in need (approximately 3 000 people per month) depending entirely on donations/sponsorship from local Business and the Public.
She operates mainly in the Rosedale and surrounding areas which she visits on a weekly basis. Many of the younger children and the elderly are restricted to their areas of residence which necessitates these visits. Many of the victims of poverty refer to Alida as “our own Mother Theresa”. The Uitenhage Lions Club and and Eden Lions Club from George combined to donate both the Feed me Campaign Plates and Food Sachets to the UCM. The plates are reusable and the Food Sachets can provide six meals that can be increased with the addition of ingredients and meat/chicken said Lion President Barend
Erasmus. Both local business and the public are invited to contribute either donations/sponsorship by contacting Alida on 082 736 7500 as she is continuously in need of food, clothing, bedding. For Davis’ dedication to caring for the poor in her community over an extended period of 33 years, Alida was the proud recipient of the Herald/General Motors Citizen of the Year Award for 2013. “Her perseverance to help so many in trying just to survive and/or escape the poverty trap will over time contribute to many of them improving their quality of life,” said Lion President Erasmus.

Everyone should be allergy aware REPORTER
A
leading pharmaceutical company specialising in allergy medication, chose April, which marks World Allergy month, to launch a national campaign aimed at raising awareness among parents and teachers of anaphylaxis – a serious and life-threatening allergic reaction, which is fast on the rise. Pharma Dynamics’ campaign stems from a survey done by the company involving almost 1 000 learners and teachers from private, government and Model C schools across the country. It found that none of the learners nor the teachers knew what to do in case of a severe allergic attack, putting children’s lives at risk. “Education workshops focused primarily on anaphylaxis – what it is, what triggers an
allergic reaction or a severe attack such as anaphylaxis, how to identify early warning signs and symptoms and how to treat it,” said Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics. “These workshops also coached parents and teachers on how to deal with and better relate to learners with allergies, who often feel stigmatised as a result of their condition.” According to international studies the incidence of anaphylaxis is on the increase. Figures are scant for SA, but some local clinics that have started to record cases of anaphylaxis say they deal with an average of 20 cases per month, but that the actual figure is likely to be much higher. Van Aswegen says more and more cases are being reported worldwide of children dying at school following a major allergic attack. “The condition is real and should be given the prominence it deserves. It can potentially be fatal if the correct care isn’t given immedi-

“If children exhibit any of these symptoms, immediate emergency medical attention should be sought,” advises van Aswegen. Pharma Dynamics has also made additional resources available for free download and printing online via its popular allergy education website, www.allergyexpert.co.za, which both parents and teachers can use as teaching aids in the home or classroom setting. Resources include: allergy poster, colouring-in pages, ‘spot the allergen’ word games, bookmarks, school presentations, allergy check-lists and fact sheets and an anaphylaxis emergency care plan. Dr Mike Levin, one of SA’s top allergists and advisor to Pharma Dynamics will also be available to respond to any online allergy-related queries via the website all year round. Pharma Dynamics’ campaign marks an important step in educating and raising awareness of the physical dangers and emotional toll imposed by allergies among children.

Hyundai’s Accent goes hatchback TEN years have flown past since I attended my first Hyundai launch in November 2004. The vehicle in the spotlight then was the Hyundai Tucson. In 2009 that was replaced by the ix35. I was, in fact, throughout the years, so impressed with the various Hyundai models that I am impatiently awaiting delivery of my own ix35 family vehicle. As it is, I have attended all of Hyundai’s new model launches over the past years, and have always been impressed by the systematic and progressive increase in quality and design of all their models. The Hyundai Accent was born almost 18 years ago; it was relaunched here in 2006 and has established itself as a real value addition to the Hyundai passenger car range. The all new Accent hatchback will slot in between the i20 and i30 hatchbacks in terms of price. Two derivatives, a six-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic gearbox will appear on the Hyundai dealer floors. Unfortunately we could not test the automatic version as only manual gearboxes
were available at the launch. This is a pity. South Africa tends to suck hind tit so to speak with automatic gearboxes. We acknowledge that we do not always get the latest developments here! Car manufacturers are slowly dispensing with manual gearboxes as more and more sophisticated automatic gearboxes are reaching the market. A good example is the DSG gearbox as used by Volkswagen amongst others, which is absolutely awesome. We have also noted that Hyundai only have 4-speed automatic gearboxes available for their Accent model, whilst other manufacturers are touting seven-and eight- speed gearboxes. Admittedly, those are more often than not CVT or DSG transmissions. Back to the Accent launch at the Fairest Cape. Being a naturally aspirated 1 600 cm3 engine, at sea level all of the 91 kW engine power is available, providing really brisk performance for the hatch. The slick 6-speed transmission has well spaced ratios extracting the best performance from the engine. The upgraded Accent is really a very stylish hatchback which will easily hold its

own within this very competitive section of the market. The Accent is blessed with a superb suspension and chassis package providing excellent road holding. The driving position is fully adjustable for height and reach of the seat, as well as the steering. Inside the cockpit, a long list of features is standard, including Bluetooth functionality for making hands-free calls. The air-conditioning system is faultless and easy to operate. Hyundai, pronounced like “SUNDAY”, is now a serious challenger to Volkswagen by using the i20 in the World Rally Championship. They have just achieved their second podium in the Rally of Portugal and that is an incredible achievement for a very first year in the gruelling World Rally championship. Verdict: The electric motor assisted steering takes a while to get used to but this is normal with all electric assisted steering systems. As has become usual for Hyundai, the quality is above reproach and the Accent is no exception providing excellent value for money. When comparing apples with apples the buyer must be aware that the Hyundai selling price includes features that other models do not! Our only beef was the non-appearance of an Automatic gearbox and the rather vague steering feel! Audi A3 named World Car of the Year

he Audi A3, the premium compact bestseller from the brand with the four rings, is the 2014 World Car of the Year. This is the second overall title for Audi in the ten year history of the World Car of the Year Awards as the Audi A6 won the inaugural overall title in 2005. The rugby will be played in two groups, with a Uitenhage group kicking off on Friday. The second group will be schools from other areas mainly playing on Satuday. There will also be netball and volleyball games. The schools participating in volleyball include U’hage High, Woolhope, Arcadia and Zanolwazi. It will be played outdoors at the Rosedale Field (weather conditions permitting). Alternatively it will be played at the Rosedale Recreation Hall at 14:00. A disco will be held on Saturday at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre at 20:00
with DJ’s Superman, Shura, Dello and Spectrum of Bay FM. Friday’s rugby and netball matches kick-off at 13:00 and will continue until 18:00. There will also be a sevens girls’ match of UHS taking on Spandau from Graaff-Reinet at 15:20. The soccer match starts at 14:10 on the B-field. An opening ceremony will be held on Saturday at 08:00 with the first rugby and netball games kicking off at 08:30. Various former rugby players will be in attendance. Tennis al gewilder op Despatch HEILIE COMBRINCK Despatch Tennisklub is een van die vinnig groeiende tennisklubs in die Oos-Kaap met die meeste jong tennisspelers wat op klubvlak saamspeel. “Ons vooruitgang is te danke aan die goeie sportgees wat hier heers sowel as briljante afrigting deur die bekende Nicky Dorfling,” sê Ronnie Victor, wie reeds die afgelope ses jaar klubpresident is van Despatch Tennisklub. In teenstelling met die landswye tendens waar tennisklubs doodloop, beleef Despatch ‘n bloeitydperk met 70 lede. Dit is die grootste klub in die Oos-Kaap en daarom was hulle genoodsaak om nog twee nuwe tennisbane te bou. “Die bouproses is aan die gang. Maar ons het nog ‘n paar ander lekker planne ook vir die toekoms. Die klubhuis gaan opgeknap word en omdat tennis ‘n familiesport is en hierdie ‘n kinder-vriendelike klub is, beplan ons om ‘n veilige speelarea vir die kleinspan in te rig.” Volgens Victor is die klub se kampioenskap-inskrywings die meeste in die provinsie met 49 deelnemers en 141 wedstryde het hulle 24 van die 38 pryse gewen.
