ie derde been van Spur se taai bergfiets-liga word Saterdag op Uitenhage aangebied by HTS Daniel Pienaar se bergfietsbaan vol uitdagings.

Verlede jaar was die Spur MTB League, soos dit bekendstaan, die grootste hoërskoolfietsryprogram in die wêreld met 10 500 deelnemers. Die sport word beskou as aangenaam vir skolewedywering en ook ‘n gesonde tydverdryf vir skoliere. Die Spur MTB League bestaan uit vier bene wat in elke streek gehou word vir hoërskool sowel as laerskool bergfietsryers. Die finaal word in Oktober op Magaliesburg gehou waar die wenskool van elke ouderdomsgroep R10 000 gaan ontvang vir die ontwikkeling van die sport. Vir Saterdag se deelname is daar verskillende ouderdomsgroepe vir seuns, dogters sowel as vir gemengde spanne. Individue is ook welkom om in te skryf. Die registrasieproses vir deelname aan Saterdag se bergfiets-uitdaging is vanaf 09:0012:00 by HTS Daniel Pienaar se hoofsportveld en klubhuis. Die nasionale eindronde is in Oktober in Magaliesburg. ;Hier is die Tiere se span wat Saterdag aan die Spur MTB League gaan deelneem. Mayor’s historic SOMA held at Despatch REPORTER

he Nelson Mandela Executive Mayor Athol Trollip delivered his State of the Metro Address (SOMA) last week, highlighting the progress of his Democratic Alliance-led coalition administration since it has been in power the past year. The SOMA was delivered at the Ernest Swanepoel Hall in Despatch. In his speech, the mayor admitted that the coalition government had not been without challenges. “No one said that it would be easy, and it hasn’t been. “However, we have persevered and our efforts have been seen and felt by many across the city and beyond,” he said. He added that upon his appointment he had promised to do three things – stop corruption, create jobs and deliver better service. “We have adopted a zero tolerance approach

to corruption, fraud and dishonesty.” Trollip said they had initiated an audit of the Housing Revolving Fund, which they believe owes the municipality millions of rands. “We have suspended five senior officials and concluded several disciplinary cases, where officials have been suspended indefinitely, with a 100% success rate to date,” he said. He added that they had opened the mayoral committee meetings to the media, established an anti-corruption hotline which had received hundreds of tip-offs, and banned business class travel and the use of blue lights on municipal vehicles. “We are doing things differently because we promised change.” Trollip said, under the new administration, unemployment had decreased by 2.2% in the last quarter of the last year, adding that more than 2 000 people were afforded work opportunities under the Expanded Works Programme. He said the city, however, needs to attract more investments from local, national, and inter-

national investors. “We have had very constructive meetings with Transnet and Prasa and are beginning to improve our relations with the Coega Development Corporation.” Trollip said the service delivery sector was the most difficult promise to fulfil, “considering the state of the administration and the backlogs that we inherited”. However, he said the municipality was able to reduce water losses from 37% to 25%. He added that a number of new roads had been surfaced and the metro had done more work in cleaning storm water drains in the past year. The mayor said that cable theft, crime, illegal dumping and housing delivery remained a serious challenge. “The theft of electricity is an even greater risk and can only be combated with the necessary funds. “We continue to battle with the National Department of Energy to get the R150 million promised to eradicate illegal electricity connections,”

Police seek deceased’s next-of-kin Detectives in Uitenhage are seeking the assistance of the community to help identify and locate the next-of-kin of an unknown male who was fatally injured in a motor vehicle accident. The accident occurred on Saturday, 15 July 2017 at about 20:50 on the Cuyler Manor Road, Uitenhage. It is alleged that the victim was knocked over by a vehicle and he was found lying next to the road by community members. The male victim,

who was in his early sixties, was about 1.68m tall and weighs about 60kg. He was wearing a green jacket, black pants with tekkies. Road project to create jobs for SMMEs The rehabilitation of the R75 between Port Elizabeth and Despatch is set to create significant opportunities for SMMEs in Nelson Mandela Bay. “The implementation of road safety measures and rehabilitation of the National Route R75 Section 1, which constitutes 13 kilometres, will create work for a minimum of 37 local SMMEs,” said Mbulelo Peterson, South African National Roads Agency: Southern Region Manager. “It will be between 1CE PE and 6 CE PE CIDB grading within the Nelson Mandela Bay. Local labour from within wards 11, 14, 25, 28, 30, 31, 33, 36, 41 and 52 will receive opportunities for employment and skills training.” The procurement process for the SMMEs has already commenced. This two-year project should be completed in May 2019. “Route 75 is known as one of the major national roads within the Eastern Cape’s interior and connects Uitenhage with Port Elizabeth. “The R75 is widely used by motorists

Some of these sub-contracting opportunities include, but are not limited to: the removal, relocation and/or installation of traffic signals, accommodation of traffic, road widening excavation and installation of sub-soil drains, drainage systems, and concrete linings for open drains, animal fencing, and concrete palisade and road markings. “There is also an introduction of a Sanitation and Waste Disposal and Environmental Project which will also allow SMMEs to participate,” Peterson concluded. The Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay “came to the party” and offered mattresses which Uitenhage South collected from them and the whole consignment was delivered on Saturday morn-

Patricia Rayners the hostel matron, was thrilled with the speedy response and donation, but went on to explain that the girls, who mainly come from farm areas, had in some cases lost the only clothes they owned. Organisations such as Rotary were proving to be a lifeline, but the rest of the community is requested also to please assist with clothing, toiletries, bedding school bags and books. Dit is dikwels ’n alleenpad vir lyers en juis daarom het ’n bipolêre ondersteuningsgroep die lig gesien op Despatch. Maryke Gouws, wat self aan bipolêre gemoedsversteuring of dan bipolêre depressie ly, is die fasiliteerder van die groep wat by The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) geaffilieer is. Sy is ook verantwoordelik vir bewusmakingsveldtogte en om die publiek in te lig oor bipolêre gemoedsversteuring. Volgens statistiek wat deur SADAG uitgereik is, is bipolêre depressie sesde op die wêreldlys as ’n oorsaak van ongeskiktheid, 30% van mense wat bipolêr is poog om selfdood toe te pas, 69% van die lyers is aanvanklik verkeerd gediagnoseer en die kans is twee keer so groot dat bipolêre lyers sterf weens ’n hartsiekte of beroerte. Daar is hoop “Maar dit hoef nie so ’n donker prentjie te wees nie. Daar is hoop. Ek weet. Ek is deur al die donker dieptes en vêr draaie. Wanneer jy die regte medikasie begin gebruik en jou

eie gemoedstoestand begin verstaan, kan jy weer die ‘maanskyn en rose’ van die lewe geniet,” sê Maryke Gouws, wat ’n SAGAG opgeleide bipolêre ondersteuningsgroepfasiliteerder is. “Een van die ergste dinge vir ’n bipolêre lyer is om net antidepresante te gebruik. Weens die wanbalans in die brein wat ’n mens se gemoed die een oomblik die hoogte laat inskiet en dan weer laat val, moet jy medikasie neem wat spesifiek jou gemoed stabiliseer. “Mense sê dikwels hul wil nie op pille wees om hulle gelukkig te hou nie. Maar ons almal drink maar ’n pilletjie vir iets, so, as dit jou lewenskwaliteit verbeter hoekom nie die medikasie neem nie? Die stigma oor bipolêre depressie is regtig skeefgetrek en ons wil mense tot nuwe insigte laat kom oor dié siekte.” Maryke het die pad gestap van verkeerde diagnose, verkeerde medikasie, selfdoodpoging en behandeling in ’n inrigting vir ge-

moedsversteuring. Nadat sy die regte medikasie begin gebruik het, het haar lewe handomkeer verander. Enigste in Oos-Kaap “Ek het met nuwe hoop uit die inrigting vir gemoedsversteuring gestap en wou dadelik by ’n ondersteuningsgroep aansluit om ander te help wat deur dieselfde hel as ek gegaan het. Maar daar was nie so ’n groep nie en toe kontak ek vir SADAG,” vertel Maryke. Sy is ingelig dat daar geen SADAG ondersteuningsgroep in die OosKaap is nie en net daar het Maryke besluit maar dan wil sy met een begin. Despatch se Bipolêre Ondersteuningsgroep is dus die eerste van sy soort in die provinsie. “Ek het nog altyd gesê ek wil mense help, maar het nooit geweet hoe en waarmee nie. So, vreemd genoeg, het die feit dat ek aan bipolêre depressie ly my nou uitgebring by een van my ideale - om mense te help. “Ek wil my ervarings en kennis oor bipo-

lêre gemoedsversteuring en die behandeling daarvan met ander deel en hulle help en raad gee om ook ’n gewone en gebalanseerde lewe te leef,” sê Maryke. Dit is belangrik dat iemand met bipolêre goemoedsversteuring hul eie gemoed en gesondheid bo aan hul prioriteitslys plaas om te oorleef in die ongenaakbare bipolêre wêreld. Die ondersteuningsgroep bied lyers die kans om te praat oor hulle bipolêre toestande, hul kan raad vra en sodoende voel hul nie alleen in hul gemoedsversteuring-stryd nie. Die groep is ook vir mense met angs, depressie sowel as vir geliefdes wat elke dag saam met iemand leef met bipolêre gemoedsversteuring. “Vir ondersteuners kan dit soms taai raak om saam met iemand te leef wat bipolêr is. Hulle kom ook maar op ’n stadium by moedverloor-se-vlakte. Daarom is dit belangrik dat hulle ook ondersteuning kry en moed ingepraat word,” sê Maryke. )Die Despatch Bipolêre Ondersteuningsgroep kom elke tweede Donderdagaand vanaf 19:00 tot 20:15 byeen. Womenowned businesses receive their grades

ineteen women-owned businesses in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro have recently graduated from a R250 000 intensive nine month women enterprise development programme run by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) in partnership with the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI). The graduation ceremony officiated by the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Sakhumzi Somyo, was held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre in Uitenhage last Thursday. A total of 21 enterprises which met the criteria were admitted to the programme, which provided training, mentorship and coaching covering areas such as strategy development, financial management, marketing management and business legal compliance. Richmond-based Bibstar Trading and Projects, owned by Nozipho Hlalukana, is one of the women-owned enterprises that graduated from the programme last Thursday. The company employs eight women and two men and offers cleaning, renovations and maintenance services. It has contracts with companies such as the South African Maritime Authority, Coega Development Corporation and the Department of Rural Development. “My business was provided with a mentor, Lulama Jakavula, who is a business trainer and her help was instrumental in ensuring that Bibstar developed proper financial management systems,” Hlalukana said. ECDC business support manager Mpumi Fundam said the programme was aimed at addressing the “entrepreneurial skills bottleneck” by

providing coaching, mentorship and training of women-owned emerging enterprises in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area. In addition, all participants had access to the varied support products offered by ECDC to address access either to finance or markets. “The programme is aimed at facilitating growth and sustainability of women-led small

businesses, supporting women-owned businesses to operate in a professional manner, while improving their administrative efficiencies and business compliance, as well as developing business management and technical skills to create readiness for markets and investor opportunities,” Fundam said. He said once enterprises were admitted to the

programme, a baseline assessment was carried out to determine the status of the businesses and their business needs. “Based on the identified gaps, mentors with relevant skills were recruited and a programme to address the identified needs was developed.” Another participating enterprise was Zozinette, a 100% women-owned enterprise in Port Elizabeth. The company produces a locally-made range of custom-designed baby carriers including stretch wraps, ring slings and buckle carriers. The company currently employs eight black women. It received support in the form of market access, strategy formulation, mentorship, as well as a financial masterclass. Another beneficiary was Lumia, a 100% black women-owned business in KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage. The company specialises in DSTV and Openview HD installations, upgrades and support services. It employs five people from KwaNobuhle. UDDI chief executive officer Patricia Dlamini said one-on-one mentorship and coaching were provided. “The purpose of one-on-one coaching was to ensure that enterprises are assisted in developing their strategies and in developing and implementing financial management systems and supporting them for compliance,” she explained. Fundam said the programme was a response to a need to provide non-financial support in order to harness the competitiveness of these small businesses. “The intention is to ensure that these enterprises are well-managed and are prepared for long-term growth,” Fundam said.

Die ou dubbelverdieping pastorie (sedert 1825) is gesloop en ’n nuwe pastorie is in 1933 ingewy. Die ou kerksaal is gesloop en die Pro Ecclesiagebou is opgerig as kerkskoolgebou. Die ou kerk is in 1934 as kerksaal omskep en word tot vandag toe vir die doel gebruik.

Erns Grundling stel boek bekend op sy tuisdorp Storieman, stapper, skrywer en oud-Brandwagter Erns Grundling is Saterdag op sy tuisdorp waar hy sy boek Elders bekendstel. “Ek sien veral uit daarna om dié boek op Uitenhage bekend te stel. Dit is ‘n reisverhaal oor die Camino-pelgrimstog in Spanje, maar ook deels ’n memoir, met heelwat verwysings na my grootwordjare op die dorp en skooldae,” sê Erns Grundling wat die naweek sy Alma Mater se 80ste bestaansjaar bywoon as-ook sy 20 jaar klasreünie. In Mei 2015 reis Grundling, bekende Weg-joernalis, na Europa om die Camino Francés, die bekende en gewilde pelgrimstog in Spanje op sy eie te gaan stap. Hy is onvoorbereid, oorgewig, beseer en onfiks. Daarby is hy volledig ontnugter deur homself, die liefde en die lewe self. Elders vertel die verhaal van Grundling se staptog van 1 025km oor 40 dae, wat hy sonder ’n selfoon, kamera of horlosie aangepak het. In ’n tyd wat ons almal toenemend onder beleg voel weens die onmiddellikheid van selfone en so-

siale media, ontdek hy die ware betekenis en beloning van om in die oomblik te leef. Hy raak meer as een keer verlief, loop sy döppelganger raak, beleef ’n reeks avonture en ontmoet kleurryke karakters, skud meer as 10kg af en kom tot waardevolle nuwe insigte langs hierdie eeue-oue roete van innerlike transformasie. Grundling sê hy het gaan stap om weg te kom van skryf, maar met sy terugkoms het hy besef hy hét ’n storie om te vertel. EP bass angling team crowned SA champs T

his year saw many of SA’s elite anglers representing twelve of the country’s provincial teams all competing for glory and the title of SABAA SA Inter Provincial Championship at Clanwilliam Dam in the Western Cape. The 8 angler EP team made the long haul with tackle, supplies and 4 boats in-tow to the west coast.

With Monday being a practice day and Tuesday a scanning day you don’t have much time to understand the dam or unlock its secrets so many hours pre-tournament research and prep were put in. Day 1. As soon as safe light was declared the boats slowly filed out one by one towards the gate buoys and blasted off to their selected

spots all with high hopes! The aim was to ensure that each boat filled its limit of 5 live bass each day. With great team work and fishing spot management all 4 team boats filled their limits to end the day in a respectable 3rd place, much to the delight of the team.

Day 2. Thursday proved to be a lot tougher with a few lost fish and fish becoming a bit lineshy but the team was getting to understand the fish movement more all the same. At the scales EP managed to consolidate 3rd place but lost some ground to Gauteng North 1st and Natal Midlands in 2nd with Gauteng Central breathing down EP’s neck in 4th. Day 3. Friday the final day a change in weather made for a difficult morning for the team. With a few adjustments and totally dedicated effort, fishing until the last available minute the no. 2 & 4 boats of Gibson/Nel and Holmes/Watson filled their limits in plain sight of the weigh station. As the final few bags were weighed it was clear that something special was in the making. The East Province team leapfrogged the previous top two into a fantastic 1st place much to the absolute joy of the humble EP Team, Boland made a huge jump to finish 2nd and Northern Gauteng took the final podium place in 3rd. Urban Run - tackle the city for charity

The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) hosts the 7th edition of the Urban Run charity festival on September 9th & 10th to again highlight ongoing inner-city upgrades in what has become the biggest charity obstacle event in the country. The Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Festival which has the city abuzz will take place on the same days at the Donkin Reserve, starting at 08:00 with an open-entry public aerobics class instructed by the local Metro Gym. The festival transforms the heart of the city into an 8km obstacle course attracting hundreds of participates and bringing spectators to the city to witness the urban renewal being undertaken by the MBDA and commercial property owners. The Urban Run was started in 2011 by Michael Zoetmulder, director of Zsports Events NPC, as a means to bring people back to the city in a fun event which provides a massive boost to local charities. The event is fast becoming one of the largest sporting events to be held in the CBD and to date has raised just under R950 000 for local nominated charities. This year’s nominated charities are the Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer initiative, and continued support of the Cleary Estate Cheshire Home, a home for chronically disabled adults and children situated in the heart of the crime and drug lands of the Northern Areas. This year’s festival will include Drone Rac-

ing, a dog competition, a 3km Urban Kids obstacle run, a 15km Urban MTB race and the feature Urban Run which is a fun and social event where competitiveness is more in the raising of charity money than running in record time, with participants dressing up and having fun as they attempt 30 or more urban obstacles and the five Powerade supported water points on the route through the CBD. Akhiwe Malinga, Zsports Marketing Manager, stresses that the Urban Run has always been about having fun tackling the city and less about trying to be the first to cross the finish line. “It’s not often runners can take part in an event where they can run and joke with their friends and colleagues and have a great laugh along the way.
