Stan en Carina Stander het Maandagoggend tussen die smeulende wrakke van hul motors, ’n Uno en VW Polo, gestaan en oor redes vir dié vermeende brandstigting bespiegel. “Ek het eerlikwaar nie die vaagste idee hoekom ons geteiken is nie,” het Stan gesê. Volgens Stan het hy en sy gesin Sondag omstreeks 20:35 rustig gesels, toe sy dogter ’n persoon by hul erf sien uitloop. “Die volgende oomblik het ons net ’n vuurlyn gesien hardloop, en toe staan die vlamme ’n meter hoog bo ons karre.” Juis omdat die vlamme bo én langs die motors hoog gestaan het, glo Stan die motors is met opset aan die brand gesteek.
“As dit byvoorbeeld ’n kortsluiting van die elektriese drade was, sou dit slegs op een deel van die motor gebrand het.” Stan se seun se motor het voor die huis in die straat gestaan en die vlamme vrygespring. Daarom glo hy húlle was die teiken van booswigte. “As die persoon sommer net iets aan die brand wou steek, sal hy of sy dit mos buite in die straat gedoen het.” Tog kan Stan, wat tans ’n bestuurder van die Kirkwood-gholfklub is, nie aan ’n rede vir die "aanval” dink nie. “Die mense op die dorp ken ons goed. My vrou (Carina) is die bestuurder van die plaaslike ouetehuis (Valleihof), en nie ek óf sy het al ooit enige dreigemente ontvang nie.” Ao. Gerda Swart, ’n polisiewoordvoerder, sê die polisie het ’n saak van saakbeskadiging geopen en die toneel sal volledig deur die polisie se forensiese eenheid ondersoek word.

dols South Africa auditions will be held once again in Port Elizabeth following intensive lobbying on behalf of local artists by Algoa FM. “Two years ago we spent many hours lobbying hard to bring the Idols auditions back to Port Elizabeth. It was such a success that we are happy to announce that the Idols judging team will be back in Port Elizabeth this year,” says Marketing Manager of Algoa FM, Toinette Koumpan. The auditions for entry into the eleventh season of the popular M-Net and Mzansi Magic Idols SA will be taking place at the Boardwalk’s Amphitheatre on Tuesday, March 3 from 09:30 in the morning. Judges for the first round of auditions will be Algoa FM presenters Charl Leslie and KayCee Rossouw, Director of Two Tone Music, Ulagh Williams, and Managing Director of Radio Active Productions Publishing Bronwen Nel. “Make sure you get to the Boardwalk early if you think you’ve got what it takes to be the next South African Idols winner says

The second round, which will consist of 70 contestants chosen by the judges, will take place on Wednesday, March 4 from 09:00 in the morning in the Boardwalk International Convention Centre. “Only three of the 70 contestants will go off to Johannesburg to show the rest of the country what we already know – that the Eastern Cape has talent,” says Koumpan. Those who make it through to the second round will be judged by Algoa FM Presenter Mio Khondleka, Idols SA Voice Coach Malie Kelly, Idols SA producer Anneke De Ridder and Lani Lombard HOD for their Publicity and Special Projects. Missing persons Update on the Industrial Strike Action On 15 January 2015, the Eastcape Midlands College Branch of the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) embarked on an illegal, unprotected strike at most of the College’s campuses across the Eastern Cape but primarily focused on the six campuses in and around Uitenhage.

The disorder originated during 2014 with numerous grievances against the College that were escalated by NEHAWU to the National Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). DHET paid detailed attention to certain allegations raised, leading to the appointment of Delloitte & Touche to conduct a forensic audit. The findings of the audit were, however, prevented from being released by an interim interdict obtained against the College by the suspended Principal andtwo other current employees. During the third term of the academic year, NEHAWU further demanded a 37% payment of salaries in lieu of benefits for temporary lecturing staff on the basis that such staff should, in its opinion, be treated as permanent employees. The EMC Council granted the benefit payment, but could not meet further demands in terms of dates of payment due to internal administrative processes. Even though the date of payment issue was well negotiated and communicated, NEHAWU embarked on the first of several illegal and unprotected strike actions. This led to interruption of classes and examinations, violence, violation of policies and numerous sit-in strikes. Disruptions to the academic programme intensified with further demands for extensions of temporary contracts of lecturing staff and other short term contracts. During continued strike action classes were disrupted with accompanying intimidation of staff and students, violence, breaching of a court interdict through unlawful trespassing on college property and destruction of college property. During this period the EMC management has done their utmost to resolve conflict through negotiations and an academic intervention programme was implemented to compensate for lost time and to prepare students for examinations. Early in January the union had an agenda of six issues which, they allege, have been brought to management’s attention repeatedly for the past 12 months. The six items, as tabled most recently on 19 January, are: • • • • • •
The alleged inadequacy of the college’s Equity Employment Plan The lifting of the suspension of a current employee The employment of a college employee who does not find favour with the union Alleged irregularities in the permanent appointment of certain staff Matching of lecturers to their posts with reference to their qualifications The delivery (now effected) of two grievances to be forwarded to the CCMA
The above items were previously tabled at a meeting between management representatives and the union on 14 January, 2015. Unfortunately, that meeting degenerated into personal attacks on the management members present and was further disrupted by a concerted and coordinated demonstration in an adjacent room that rendered further discussion impossible. This tactic of disruption was a repeat of similar coordinated demonstrations on 13 and 20 November, 2014 that also resulted in the abandonment of a college council meeting and lost working hours, respectively. A meeting held on 19 January 2015 at a Port Elizabeth venue, to avoid a repeat of the disruption and at the invitation of college management, was externally facilitated and conducted in a positive and encouraging manner. The meeting added a further two items to the agenda: • •
The implementation of national collective bargaining agreements as they pertain to the college; and The recreation of an Employer / Employee forum that would address issues raised by all unions with college management on a frequent and formal basis.
The meeting of the 19th closed late in the evening with approval of an action plan and deliverables, including the formation of bilateral task teams and agreement on deadlines, addressing all of the aforementioned agenda items. As a concession, management agreed not to implement a third and final ultimatum to striking workers scheduled for 07h45 on Tuesday 20 January, until after a special feedback session was conducted by the union officials to their constituents the following day. Thus an additional day’s opportunity for striking employees to return to work was granted until 07h45 on Wednesday 21 January.

The striking employees did not return to work on 21 January where after notices were issued advising them of a disciplinary hearing to be held on 27 January and to be chaired by an independent presiding officer from a Johannesburg firm of attorneys. In addition, the striking employees were notified of an interdict granted by the Port Elizabeth Labour Court prohibiting the union and specifically named employees from disrupting college activities, causing damage, intimidating non-striking employees and coming within 100 metres of any college property. The disciplinary hearing took place on 27 January wherein the following charges were laid: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Participating in an unprotected strike action; Intimidation and/or incitement and/or threating behaviour Damage to company property. Breach of a court interdict Gross insubordination
Due to the seriousness of charges of 1 and 4, being sufficient grounds to secure summary dismissal if found guilty by the presiding officer, charges 2, 3 and 5 were withdrawn at the commencement of the hearing. This also shortened the hearing process, reduced costs and negated the need to call additional witnesses. The hearing commenced at 11h00 as advised to the striking workers and the regional office of their union, NEHAWU. After waiting until 11h30 for the arrival of the representatives of the accused, the presiding officer declared that the hearing would continue with the defendants’ representatives in absentia. After hearing evidence and making detailed enquiries regarding the procedures and processes followed by the college in dealing with the unprotected strike and disregard of the interdict, the presiding officer declared that there was a prima facie case for summary dismissal on the two charges. It was noted that the college reserved its right to reintroduce the three withdrawn charges at any future time, should the need arise. College management is confident that it has taken all necessary steps to restore normality and to create an atmosphere conducive to education and learning. “As we are committed to quality teaching, learning and assessment in a safe environment, management has put various plans in place to ensure positive progress,” says Ms Chagi, the college’s Acting Principal. Such plans include the following: • The extension of the application and registration period for prospective students from 2 to 17 February 2015. • Extended communication to the community to keep the public, prospective and current students and their families informed regarding the facts. • Academic interventions to be implemented to compensate for lost time. • Additional administrative support from NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) has been requested to accelerate the bursary administration process. This will speed up financial assistance to needy and qualifying students. The college has incurred significant additional, unplanned expenditure during the unrest at a time that is traditionally one of difficult cash flow. Costs have included additional security to protect students, employees and the public from harm and intimidation and property from vandalism. Despite this, damage has been caused to property and to employees’ personal vehicles and houses. Further costs have been incurred, including the legal costs relating to the interdict and disciplinary hearing and the renting of meeting venues to reduce the risk of disruption by union members. Following the laid down labour relations procedure, notice was served on the regional office of NEHAWU and officials of their EMC branch to attend a meeting in Port Elizabeth on 3 February 2015 to make representations in mitigation of proceeding with a disciplinary hearing against such officials as the organisers of the illegal and unprotected strike action that led to the summary dismissal of 66 of their members. The 66 staff members comprises of both temporary and permanent staff members of whom 40 are lecturers, 12 are administrative staff members and 14 are general assistants. Once again, the union and its officials chose to disregard this opportunity afforded them under law and did not attend the meeting. Consequently, a notice of disciplinary proceedings to be initiated against the union officials on 9 February 2015 was delivered to the regional office of NEHAWU on 3 February 2015. This consultation meeting was tentatively set for Friday, 13 February, at a venue to be confirmed. The Shop Stewards were expected to be represented by their regional and national officials. However, on 11 February NEHAWU regional officials advised that they would not be available for consultation until 20 February and discussions regarding the date continue. On 11 February, striking NEHAWU members attempted to obstruct the delivery of supplementary examination papers to Grahamstown campus. In addition, some protesters gained illegal access to college property and allegedly forced students and others to leave the premises. Photographic and video evidence is to be passed to SAPS in support of charges to be laid against the perpetrators. Further developments will be advised as they unfold.

Bikers party to support girl with cerebral palsy HEILIE COMBRINCK “Bikers know how to have a good time, but they also know how to support a good cause.” So said Rob McOwen from Workshop Crew Motorcycle Club, which will be having its annual Primates Party at Spiders Web Sports Bar on Saturday.
The charity they support for 2014 and 2015 is financial assistance to the Hanekom family from Despatch, hence the Club being based in the town. Elandré and Zena Hanekom’s first born was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She attends the Aurora Stimulation Centre for all the treatments she needs. “The couple’s six year old daughter is unable to walk or talk. As Elana grows, the chal-
lenges also become bigger. She is now undergoing stem cell therapy treatment. Through the year the Workshop Crew will be raising funds with the aim to contribute to Elana’s medical bills. “Although this is a biking event everyone is welcome, but please keep in mind that this is a licensed venue selling alcohol, so no persons under the age of 18 will be allowed inside
the premises. The party will carry on till late so come and have a blast with us,” said McOwen. )Spiders Web Sports Bar is next to the old Uitenhage/Despatch road. The gate opens on Saturday at 12:00 and the entry fee is R50 per person, which includes a metal badge. There will be various food stalls, liquid refreshments, music and lots of fun.

World reknowned IRB refiree at Muir Founders Day HEILIE COMBRINCK

n celebrating the founders day of South Africa’s oldest boys’ high school, Muir College, world reknowned International Rugby Board referee Craig Joubert will be the special guest speaker at the Old Muirite Union dinner. Muir College Boys’ High School was established in 1822 and Old Boys, parents and friends from around the country will be travelling to Uitenhage to celebrate the school’s 193rd year during the weekend of March 6-7. Craig Joubert attended Maritzburg College and furthered his studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He then went into corporate banking, a profession in which he spent five

René Zietsmann whilst Patty Metcalf was accompanying on piano for her 30th Carol Service. “We thank each and every Riebeek girl for the special gifts and thank all who attended the Carol Service as this money will be put to good use,” said Maryka Swart of Uitenhage Child and Family Welfare Society. According to Marilyn Woods, Principal of Riebeek College, “they enjoyed a festive, joyous Carol Service and then were doubly blessed to be able to hand over the big boxes of gifts. Once again, the Riebeek girls have made me proud with their sense of compassion and their willingness to give.”

Men called to do medical circumcision to reduce HIV NCEBA DLADLA Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has called all South African men to go for circumcision as medical male circumcision has been proven by several studies to reduce HIV infection by 60%. The above mentioned statistic is supported by Dr Mlungiseleli Mgilane, head of the TB HIV Care Association, a NGO specialising in Medical Male Circumcision. It is situated in Korsten, Port Elizabeth. “Medical Male Circumcision makes a huge impact in the fight against the scourge of HIV/Aids. Sixty per cent is quite huge. This
means a significant impact,” said Mgilane, otherwise known as Dr Mlu. He said the Department of Health has targeted 4, 3 million men to be circumcised by 2016. KwaZulu-Natal is leading in the fight against HIV with the involvement of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaDiniZulu. According to reports, 5 000 male circumcision procedures are performed in KZN per month and that has significantly dropped the number of HIV infections in that province. TB HIV Care Association started in December 2012 to assist government to achieve its aims, said Dr Mlu, adding that since they started, men, especially Coloureds were coming in, including a few Xhosas.
He was concerned that not many people were aware of their existence. “We offer a 15-minute pain free operation to men from 10 years of age to over 50 years. We give them pain tablets to take home and also do 48 hours, seven days and 21 days check-up visits,” said Dr Mlu, adding that they also provide food for men forced to stay more than four hours. He said interested men should contact their nearby clinics in and around Port Elizabeth, Despatch, KwaNobuhle and Rosedale in Uitenhage for an appointment. Meanwhile, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) Male circumcision provides only partial protection, and therefore

should be only one element of a comprehensive HIV prevention package which includes: the provision of HIV testing and counselling services; treatment for sexually transmitted infections; the promotion of safer sex practices; the provision of male and female condoms and promotion of their correct and consistent use.

Motivating students to achieve the above, introducing them to a culture of learning and to develop their academic skills is Carmen Knowles, who for the past five years has assisted students with research and assignments. “Last year all five of my students successfully completed their matrics with bachelor admissions. They where from different schools in the western areas of Uitenhage,” said Carmen Knowles from the David Knowles Academic Programme. “I’ve named the programme after my late father David Knowles, who has made a positive contribution in education for more than 40 years. He was a mentor to many a friend and colleague. With this programme I want to continue his legacy.” The programme, which is run free of charge from Knowles’ residential property, aims to provide assistance to students in all learning areas with the main focus to help individual students reaching their full potential. According to Knowles the programme runs on a weekly basis and from the very start each student will have to determinate and formulate his or her own individual action plan and goals. “The programme will allow students to develop outside of the confines of the classroom. “It also aims at providing intellectual stimulation to the students. It also is run in co-operation with the Department of Social Development to assist with the well-being of students,” said Knowles. She works in collaboration with various educators and according to her, “one of her biggest inspirations beside my dad is Steven George.” On board at the programme to assist with sport development is Royden Johnson. Others involved include Fabian Bosch, Eldridge Simon and Cleo Allison, a third year fashion design student at NMMU. “This is a new initiative and a challenge. he 2015 South African National Karting Championship fires up at the Celso Scribante Circuit on Saturday in a fresh season set to dish up even more innovation and a new top class. The new IAME X30 shifter class gains national championship status for the first time with these high-powered 125cc 6-speed machines set to become karting’s quickest class. X30 and the Rok classes start their seasons in Port Elizabeth this weekend before they join up with the new Evo-powered Rotax Max classes for the Cape round in April at Killarney. The IAME X30 class begins its first season as a national karting class with a star-studded field set to deliver premium action this weekend, with Johannesburg’s world championship runner-up Nathan Parkins heading an entry list that also includes local hero and triple SA Production Car champion Michael Stephen. Solid as a Rok Moving over to the Vortex Rok classes, SA champion Chassen Bright will be out to defend his Super Rok 125cc title from the likes of last year’s runner-up Jason Smith, brothers Jason and Luke Hill, Keagan Blackensee and Junior Max graduate Henry Bam.
