Water disaster!
The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is experiencing an unexpected water crisis after a canal that transports water from the Gariep Dam to the Scheepersvlakte Dam collapsed last week on Wednesday. Certain areas in the metro, especially the northern and eastern areas, have been out of water for several days. This canal was built in 1986 and supplies water to approximately 8 000ha of citrus and other crops in the Addo and Barkly Bridge area. According to Lovemore, the city will have to draw much more water from western systems. “We have already consulted the Department of Water and Sanitation to increase our allocation from the Kouga Dam in this regard,” she said. “However, it will have a huge impact on the irrigation farmers of the Gamtoos Valley. Therefore, the withdrawal must be managed very carefully. “The channel belongs to and is run by the Department of Water and Sanitation. Engineers were already on site on Saturday and the equipment we needed to repair it has already arrived there. “Meanwhile, we decided to build a temporary redirection as an emergency measure.
It should take about a week to two weeks. “Our engineers could, however, integrate with other systems of supply. “Those areas that usually receive their water from Nooitgedacht will now be helped to some extent with water from western areas so that their taps do not run dry,” said Lovemore. The most affected areas are Coega, Ngqura Harbour, Motherwell, Perseverance, Markman, Wells Estate, Bluewater Bay, Bloemendal, Bethelsdorp, Chatty and Colchester. Uitenhage and Despatch will get their water from the Groendal Dam, as well as resources from western systems, but may sometimes be without water. “Unfortunately, especially high-lying areas may sometimes be without water,” Lovemore said. The NMB municipality issued an urgent appeal to all residents in all areas of the metro to cut their water usage immediately to the barest minimum, stopping the nonessential use of water, such as washing cars.
Metro is set to create over 17 000 jobs REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is set to create 17 289 work opportunities in the 2017/18 financial year which will not only alleviate unemployment in the municipality but also improve service delivery and the local economy. This was said in a statement on Sunday by Councillor Andrew Whitfield, Member of Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture. “There is hope for many unemployed residents, even the GM workers whose jobs hang in the balance. Big business is groaning under the weight of national governance concerns and a sluggish economy,” said Whitfield. Councillor Whitfield added that through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP)
and full-time equivalent posts, many thousands more of residents will be able to put food on the table in the next financial year. “This cash-backed target of 17 289 has been set based on a number of key capital projects and identified service delivery gaps. A key performance indicator to this effect has been included in our Integrated Development Plan for adoption, which will hold this government and all its officials to account.” The focus of EPWP areas are likely to be waste management, water, storm water, drainage, roads and lighting. “While the automotive sector is important for Nelson Mandela Bay, we are also developing ties with other sectors to give our economy greater width and reach. “Agroprocessing, Tourism, Sports Tourism, IT, Services and
Food and Beverage are sectors that will flourish given the right environment.” He said that diversifying the economy and facilitating a process of trans-skilling between sectors will go a long way towards building a sustainable economic environment. “The Municipality will reduce the turnaround time to get a business connected to electricity and the number of days taken to have building plans approved, among many others,” said Whitfield. “Recent investment in our City such as the Toyota Forklift expansion, Dry Ice production facility and PWC call centre indicate that we are starting to move in the right direction. “By creating an enabling, supportive environment, backed up by reliable infrastructure, business will thrive. Jobs will be created. And that is how cities move forward,” said Whitfield.

This warning follows a growing number of incidents where kites flown close to or under electric cables have entangled themselves around electric cables, resulting in cables touching each other. isitors of all ages to the 16th annual SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees are invited to “Embrace your Wild in the Adventure Province,” says festival director Jennifer Honsbein. This year’s three-day festival at the end of June includes a unique “festival for all seasons” for kids, the Eastern Cape’s premier game auction, “wild rides” and “wild shopping” at over 350 specialist stalls, as well as a galaxy of stars performing under the Karoo sky on the province’s biggest stage. “This festival bridges the gap between the farming community, on whom we are dependent for many of our products and the retail outlets where our shoppers see the final merchandise,” says SPAR Eastern Cape marketing director Abri Swart. An integral part of the Sundays River Valley is the Addo Elephant National Park, which this year will be selling 50 disease-free prime buffalo from its herd at the Kirkwood Wildsfees Game Auction on Friday, June 30. Hosted in partnership with the organisers of the annual Wildsfees, the auction gives breeders from the whole region an opportunity to purchase prime game from Addo, other national parks and accredited breeders. Citrus has been grown commercially in the Valley since 1908, and this heritage is being celebrated for the first time at the ATKVLemoenstasie stall in the craft arena. ATKV award winning chefs Francois Ferreira and Annelie Oosthuizen, founder of Petronella Fine Dining, will be sharing some of their favourite citrus dishes with festival goers. There is an adventure zone where families can embrace their wildlife together. These include little pony rides, enchanted walks through the Faeries for all Seasons Wonderland, and meeting favourite characters from Paw Patrol for the youngsters, while parents and the older kids enjoy giant games such as dominos, jenga and croquet, and the more adventurous try their hand at paint ball. Top South African artists will be on the all new giant Adventure Province Main Stage for the three-day duration of the festival.

Quad paras wish to play their part in society HEILIE COMBRINCK
T
he Quad Para Association of the Eastern Cape (QAEC) has been around for the past 27 years, though pretty much behind the scenes. This, a young eager team of quadriplegics now wish to change, as they want to be seen, known and heard in society. The Quad House at 47 Worraker Street was established by quadriplegic couple John and Lynette Muller during October 1990 to accommodate members of the Quad Para Association. “Their intention was to create an environment for quadriplegcs and paraplegics who had very little or no assistance from the outside and no opportunity to generate an income for themselves,” said Lafras Moolman, chairperson of the Quad House in Port Elizabeth. “Sadly the Mullers have both passed on and the house has fallen to management by others who unfortunately have let the premises run down to a bad state.” Presently Quad House, which functions totally separately from QAEC, has six residents with room for one more. The QAEC is a non-profit organisation and is entirely dependent on donations and sponsors. It is involved in various projects where they uplift people with disabilities in the community whether through skills training opportunities, peer support or outreach projects like the handing-over of wheelchairs to people who can’t afford it. According to Moolman, quadriplegics and paraplegics do receive disability grants of R1 420 per month and this subsidy directly goes towards the monthly rent of a room. “Our Quad House residents are entirely dependent on donations and sponsors to purchase much needed personal and basic items such as groceries and toiletries,” said Moolman.

“Living conditions are very basic and there is massive room for improvements to make the living environment safer, more accommodating and to lift the standard of living. “Quad House does have a vehicle available for the residents, but they themselves are to pay for the petrol in the event that they may need to visit a doctor or any other such requirement,” said Moolman. Some of the other needs at Quad House include maintenance of the building issues, ba-
sic groceries and toiletries, monthly wages for carers and for the disabled members to be incorporated into the community. “This is only the tip of the iceberg. We invite people to become involved at Quad House, to serve on our committee or to help us to make a difference in the community,” said Moolman. They are also in the process of forming “Friends of QAEC” and updating their membership database for quadriplegics and para-
plegics. If members for instance need batteries for their electric wheelchairs they apply through QAEC, free of charge, as the association has a standing agreement with SABAT in the supplying of these batteries. Kat spring in en hou sy lyf redder

I
n ’n dramatiese reddingspoging op Uitenhage het ’n kat genaamd Felix ’n ander kat, hoog in ’n boom gestrand, gered toe menslike pogings gevaal het.
Brandweermanne, die dierebeskermingsvereniging se inspekteur en nuuskieriges het verstom gestaan toe Felix, ’n huiskat, ná hulle talle (gefaalde) reddingspogings uit die bloute opdaag en binne sekondes sy lyf redder hou om ’n verbouereerde katjie eiepotig na veiligheid aan te keer. Die Uitenhage DBV het vroeg verlede Donderdag ’n noodoproep ontvang van die Gerbers in Mosel-woonbuurt op Uitenhage oor ’n katjie wat hoog in ’n boom hang. Die DBV het die brandweer se hulp ingeroep. Hulle was blitsvinnig op die toneel. Joanita Gerber sê sy was die vorige aand rondom 22:00 in die kombuis toe sy ’n kat hoor skreeu. Sy het eers gedink dit is hul eie tomkat Felix wat kattermaai, maar toe sien sy hoe

Vroeg Donderdagoggend toe haar ma, Juanita Dean, haar woonsteldeur oopmaak, het sy ’n grys katjie hoog in die boom, met stokstywe voorbeentjies deur ’n mik, sien hang. “Mickey hou van boomklim. Hy hardloop sommer gou die eerste paar takke op. So, ek dink die katjie het vreeslik geskrik toe hy sien maar die hond is ook in die boom,” het huiseienaar Eugene Gerber gesê. Brandweerman Morné Gerber het eers teen die 8 meter hoë brandweerleer opgeklim om die katjie te probeer red, wat ná heelnag in die koue, toe al pootuit in die mik gehang het. Maar die katjie was ongeveer 13 meter hoog in die boom, so die leer was te kort en boomklim sou ook nie werk nie want die takke was te dun. In ’n tweede poging het Uitenhage DBV inspekteur Kevin Brown die leer uitgeklim en probeer om die katjie te vang met ’n swembad se skoonmaaknet. Dit was ook sonder sukses en die katjie het nog hoër opgeklim.

“...Niemand van ons het geweet die ander kat het ook die kat uit die boom gekyk en sy eie plan gehad nie.” - KEVIN BROWN, UITENHAGE DBV Om die kat uit die boom te kyk, sou nie help nie en in ’n laaste poging is besluit om ’n tou aan die tak vas te maak en dit dan af te trek. Hopelik sou dit die katjie laat spring en vir dié verwagte aksie het brandweermanne gereed gestaan met ’n kombers om te keer dat hy hom nie katswink val nie. Asems is opgehou soos die tak stadig afgebuig is. Toe breek die tak en die katjie spring, maar weg van die kombers af en toe hy grondvat, kies hy koers. Brandweermanne is agterna, maar is in hul spore gestop toe Felix soos blits op die toneel verskyn. Soos dit enige baas
van sy eie jaart betaam, het hy die katjie in ’n hoek op die erf vasgekeer, waar Eugene Gerber blitsvinnig die katjie agter die nek kon gryp. “Dit was nou ’n baie interessante reddingspoging. Almal het ’n plan gehad, maar niemand van ons het geweet die ander kat het ook die kat uit die boom gekyk en sy eie plan gehad nie,” het Brown gesê nadat hy die katjie vinnig by Gerber oorgevat en in ’n vanghok gesit het. Terwyl die brandweermanne hul toerusting opgeruim het, het Felix soos ’n wafferse held met stokstywe beentjies, stert in die lug en swaailyfie die toneel besnuffel – só asof hy geweet het : Ék is Felix, redder wat ’n katastrofe help afweer het. Die geredde katjie is na die Uitenhage DBV geneem en hopelik sal sy eienaar/s hom daar opspoor. Die Uitenhage brandweermanne en die DBV word bedank vir hulle vinnige optrede om die katjie te help red . . . en dan natuurlik ook Felix vir sy aandeel.

Largest crowd in recent history at racing day The famous and historic East London Grand Prix Circuit hosted a full field of no fewer than 22 fast and determined men and women who all had aspirations of claiming victory on SA’s fastest stage. In the end, it was Universal Healthcare’s Jeffrey Kruger who took the overall spoils, but not before putting up a great show for the thousands of fans who enjoyed the action on the iconic piece of tarmac. “Round 3 of the Engen Volkswagen Cup was a perfect example of why the series is such a success and why it has been for decades. You have more than 20 racing drivers in identical cars. Put them all on the same piece of fast but narrow tarmac that includes feared corners like Potter’s Pass and Rifle Bend, and you are in for a treat,” said Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. When all the points were added, Kruger emerged as the big winner of the day. Shorter claimed second overall with Clinton Bezuidenhout completing the overall podium. But perhaps the performance of the day belonged to Volkswagen Motorsport’s very own Jonathan Mogotsi. It was his first visit to East London and the first time he laid eyes on the feared Potter’s and Rifle sweeps that test driving talent to the full, but the 2016 Volkswagen Driver Search winner came through with flying colours to record a career best 6th place finish in race 1. Volkswagen Motorsport teammate Kuda Vazhure was less fortunate. A few technical issues robbed him of valuable practice time early in the weekend, but when the flags were waved to signal the end of the weekend’s racing he had moved himself up into a very respectable 7th overall. “We are very pleased with the way the series is going. It develops future stars while entertaining the fans in the process,” said Mike Rowe after completion of the second and final
race. “But we are even more pleased with the great progress made by our own two drivers Mogotsi and Vazhure. They are improving with every outing and after showing their mettle at East London, it’s only a matter of time
before they start fighting for those coveted podium positions.” ) The next opportunity to do that will be at Round 4 of the Extreme Festival scheduled to take place at Pretoria’s Zwartkops Racing Circuit on 16 and 17 June.

Madibaz are by far the best outfit in the regional league history as they collected 71 league points from 30 outings. The students managed to win 21 games, draw eight and lose only once. Madibaz Manager Mark Tommy said, “We knew right from the start that our goal was to win the league. Our players put the club first and they are disciplined, dedicated and determined. Our players know that in order to achieve their goal, they had to stay focused all the time. “I think that hard work paid dividends. Our side showed character and courage although it was tough during the season. We are indeed very proud of our side. I would like to thank our Head Coach Wayne Iveson and the whole team for the sterling performance that they had given. The Club Management supported us all the time, hence, they deserve an accolade. “We look forward to playing the Provincial Promotional Play-offs at the date that will be announced.” Highland Spurs proved to be the dark horses as no one thought they would finish in second position. Spurs accumulated 50 league points, while the pacesetters, Fairview Rovers, finished in third position after collecting 48 league points. The newcomers, PE Sundowns and Golden Aces, finished in fourth and fifth positions after collecting 48 and 46 league points respectively. Showvillage United, who finished in 14th posi-
tion with 31 league points, will survive relegation if Madibaz win the promotional play-offs. Island City and Young Cosmos will campaign in their local football associations as they failed to avoid relegation.
