ircraft enthusiasts along the east coast of the country will have the opportunity to enjoy spectacular aerobatic performances at the inaugural Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow in Uitenhage.

The airshow will be part of the Wings & Wheels Festival at the Uitenhage Airfield this weekend. “We are very excited as Saturday will be the first ever official airshow held at the Uitenhage airfield,” said Lourens Kruger, Wings &

Wheels Festival organiser. “What is even more exciting is that some of the eccentric aircraft which will take to the sky are owned by Stu Davidson and his son Patrick, descendants of the legendary Doug Davidson, after which the airshow is named. “Congratulations to Patrick, who last weekend ended top of the ten South African pilots who competed in the Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics in Durban.” Patrick was among ten South African and five international pilots competing for the top spot in the Sky Grand Prix Aerobatics contest. France’s Francois le Vot took first place

High impact airshow Aircraft to be seen in action include the aerobatics Sukhoi Su-26 with Patrick Davidson behind the steer. This single seater has the capability of literally hanging 90 degrees

on its propeller in the sky. He will also be seen in the former advanced trainer aircraft and warbird, the well-known Harvard AT-6. Stu Davidson will be seen in his Boeing Stearman 75, Mustang P-51 and Aero L-39 high performance jet. Other aircraft include the Whisper X with pilot Russel Phillips, RV7 with pilot Martin Venn and John Huddlestone with his Robinson R22 two-bladed chopper. “It will be a high impact and spectacular airshow of an hour and a half (14:00-15:30),” said Kruger. LICENCE TESTING CENTRE CLOSED The Driving Licence Testing Centres in Korsten and Uitenhage will be closed on Friday (28 March) as a result of staff training workshops to improve service

delivery. All pre-booked tests for Saturday, 29 March, will continue as scheduled. The Driving Licence Testing Centres will re-open as normal on Monday at 07:45.

he inaugural Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow, which is part of the Wings & Wheels Festival, will be held at the Uitenhage Airfield this weekend. Chief of Airshows South Africa, Flight Director and Security Officer Rikus Erasmus will be present at this historic event. The festival starts on Friday from 14:00 with stalls, entertainment, helicopter flips and some pilots practising their rounds. Gates open at 08:00 on Saturday with the official opening by Mayor Ben Fihla at 10:00. It will be preceded by a motorcade joined by motorcycles, starting at 09:00 from the VW AutoPavilion. Wheelchairs As part of the Wings & Wheels Festival, Despatch Klinicare, one of the sponsors, is running a wheelchair project. People in

need of wheelchairs will be handed these devices between 10:00 and 11:00. Enquiries: Willie van Onselen 0072 130 4456. Doggy Walk A Doggy Walk for SPCA (4km) will be held at 08:00. Pedestrian walkway a danger zone HEILIE COMBRINCK

he pedestrian walkway at the corner of Caledon and Baird Streets in Uitenhage is a danger zone. You’ve got to watch where you walk, as uneven and missing pavers might cause you to trip resulting in possible physical harm. “It has been like this for the past three years! What an unfortunate impression to travellers and visitors passing through the heart of Uitenhage,” said Kurt Nelson, owner of businesses in Caledon Street. “Here we have a state-of-the-art beautiful fast food building with a third world walkway in front of it.” The corner of Caledon and Baird Streets is a popular drop-off point for taxi commuters making their way to town. During rainy weather this site turns into a muddy mess as a result of the missing pavement blocks. According to another business owner in Caledon Street, who wishes to stay anonymous, the condition of the walkway results in a degrading shopping experience for their clients. “The walkway looks septic. I’ve seen children fall and get hurt and also an elderly lady who tripped and fell. She was very embarrassed. Female customers complain regarding their shoes being damaged by the uneven pavers. “What I do not understand is that if a person gets injured as a result of the condition of the walkway, he or she can sue the municipality. A few years ago a pedestrian injured in Caledon Street, was successful in her court case against the municipality,” said the business owner. Several of the business owners in Caledon Street expressed their disappointment as they state that they have “privately owned businesses contributing directly to the municipal coffers, but when it comes to service delivery like in this case the restoration

of a walkway, nothing happens.” Businessman Robert Frier from Odds & Ends said, luckily nobody has been hurt by the uneven pavers in front of his business. “The only hassle is that the uneven pavers make it very difficult for deliverers to push trolleys.” Nelson added “what gets my goat is that the Baird Street walkway was fixed and the central business district was revamped and looked after. “We as businesses support Uitenhage and strive in providing our community with good shopping experiences. Why are we as businesses then being neglected by authorities?” According to Councillor Pieter Terblanche “fingers are being pointed from one to another of who caused the actual damage. Whether it was caused by demolishers or contractors, who knows? What matters is that it should be repaired. “The latest information that I’ve received is that the case has been referred to the Infrastructure Directorate Roads and Stormwater in Port Elizabeth to find funds for restoring the pavement,” said Terblanche. Following enquiry regarding the condition of the walkway in front of the building, the manager at MacDonalds told the UD News that she wished not to comment.

hat first comes to your mind when seeing waste dumped in open areas or next to a road? The lack of service delivery by authorities; or rather blaming irresponsible citizens or illegal waste removers for the mess? “Most of our problem areas in and around Uitenhage, where waste is illegally dumped, are caused by irresponsible citizens as well as unregistered waste removers,” said Councillor Ann-Marie Terblanche. “It is easy to blame the municipality. Yes, we all know the situation of poor service delivery, but citizens and local businesses should not worsen conditions by making them guilty of this kind of don’t care

behaviour.” The UD News visited several illegal dumping sites in and around town as well as the canals in lower Market Street and at the back of Middle Street, where removable waste bins were placed in the storm water canals to prevent waste objects from flowing into the Swartkops River. On visiting the site in lower Market Street, Councillor Terblanche shockingly said; “This is absolutely disgusting ... look at the rats! Clearly these bins have not been replaced or cleaned for many weeks. This is a service delivery problem, probably as a result of contactors not being paid for service rendered to the municipality. “Once again citizens worsen the situation

by dumping their domestic waste into these bins and even in the canals. These citizens are directly contributing to polluting the river and causing a health hazard,” said Terblanche. According to Jeff Bratby, an executive member from Zwartkops Conservancy, there are regular clean-up projects initiated by the Conservancy. “A matter of concern is that in some of the Uitenhage areas the refuse collection operates on a two weekly basis. “Thus citizens make themselves guilty of illegal dumping.” “We need more awareness programmes to educate the community regarding to importance to refrain from polluting their area

GPF program ‘voorspel’ misdaad CARALEE SCHEUN

aar is weervoorspellingsprogramme en dan sê die mense van die Karoo die weerman lieg, dis maklik 10 grade warmer of so . . . Nou is daar ’n misdaadvoorspellingsprogram – ’n eerste in Suid-Afrika. En tot dusver was daar nog niemand wat sê dié program lieg nie. Om dít te verstaan moet ’n mens by Etienne Joubert, ontwerper van Suid-Afrika se eerste misdaadvoorspellingsprogam, in sy kantoor op Uitenhage gaan kuier. “Dit het my ontsettend gefrustreer dat die misdadigers my en die ander buurtwaglede altyd een voor was,” verduidelik Joubert, eienaar van ’n rekenaaronderneming. Hy is al bykans drie jaar lank lid van die Uitenhage-gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (GPF). Noudat hy ondervoorsitter is én die rekenaarprogram goed op dreef, skakel hy ten

nouste met die polisie. “Misdaadvoorkoming – dít is die belangrikste,” onderstreep hy, “en volg ons die tendense wat die program vir ons uitspoeg, kan ons ten minste vóór die misdadigers op die toneel wees.” Program wys tendense Daar was byvoorbeeld groot misdaadprobleme in Uitenhage se Caledonstraat. Alle voorvalle is noukeurig in die program gevoer en toe wys die program die patroon uit: op ’n sekere dag is sekere dinge hoog op die “inkopielys”. Misdaadvoorkomingsmaatreëls is rondom die spesifieke dae en tye in plek gestel en nou het die misdaadvoorvalle in Caledonstraat afgeneem.” Syfers doen die praatwerk By die GPF kry hy gereeld misdaadstatistieke onder oë. “Maar dit was net ’n klomp syfers, dit het niks vir my beteken nie.”

=Dié lugfoto van Uitenhage is deur Etienne Joubert in die misdaadvoorspellingsprogram ingeskryf, met die wit lyne wat die gebied in drie sektore verdeel. Die kolle verskyn, met die kategorie se kleur, op die kaart soos die misdaad voorspel word. Toe gaan sit hy en dink hoe kan hy statistiek en misdaadsyfers inspan om vir ’n verandering een voor die skollies te wees. Joubert se 33 jaar ondervinding in die rekenaarbedryf het hom dadelik na iets soos ’n misdaadvoorspellingsprogram gelei. Twee maande later was die program kant en klaar geskryf en aan die gang. Elke misdaadvoorval is ingevoer. “Ons breinkrag kan nie so baie inligting inneem en die onderlinge kolletjies verbind sodat ’n helder misdaadbeeld anderkant uitkom nie. ’n Rekenaar wel.” Gewoontes is voorspelbaar Dié rekenaarprogram het ook ’n interessante mense-aspek opgetel. “Mense is beslis gewoonte-gebonde en dit is wat die program só doeltreffend maak. Ons kan nou die misdaad in ons gebied voorspel en probeer voorkom!” Die program dui nie net die hoë risiko-gebiede aan nie, dit kan ook spesifieke misdaad en die tyd van dié misdaad aandui. Maar wat van eenmalige misdrywe, wat net per toeval in ’n spesifieke gebied plaasgevind het?

“Die program is reeds opgestel om sulke voorvalle uit die stelsel se voorspelling te gooi. Maar die eenmalige voorval word steeds in die geheue gestoor vir verwysing-doeleindes,” antwoord Joubert. Polisieondersteuning Die polisie, só glo hy, moet so ver as moontlik bygestaan word. Gevolglik het hy selfs ’n verslag-opsie in die program geskryf. Elke dag word ’n verslag van die GPF se optrede aan die polisie vir hul opvolgwerk oorhandig. Buiten vir die misdaadstatistieke, het Joubert die Uitenhage-GPF se inligting ook in die program gevoer. Met die lugfoto van Uitenhage, verdeel in die drie sektore en aangepaste kategorieë vir misdaad, is die program spesiaal vir Uitenhage ontwerp. Landwye toepassings Ander buurtwagte kan ook uit die program voordeel trek, het Joubert gesê. Die program is maklik aanpasbaar en kan binne ’n week vir ’n ander dorp effektief wees. “Maar natuurlik sal die program met tyd en meer inligting meer akkuraat word.”

Guest performer Monali Shome from India will be seen in the concert together with musicians from India and students of her music academy. Monali together with her talented daughter Maithili Shome, a child prodigy at the tender age of 11 years will get the audience to dance. Maithali was a finalist in the India Zee TV “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs” (a singing talent show similar to the Idols) and was highly praised for her vocal prowess by the judges.

Monali was also a recipient of the prestige R.D. Burman Award in India. Six other students from Monali’s Academy will enthral patrons with their Bollywood renditions. Natalie, one of the vocalists, was the first non-Indian to participate in the India talent show in Kolkata. it is nou 20 jaar later sedert Heinrich en Zelda Stumke hulle privaat slagplaas Aalwynhoek Abattoir, gedurende 1994 buite Uitenhage op ’n familieplaas in gebruik geneem het. Oor dié tydperk het baie dinge in die demokratiese Suid-Afrika verander, party ten goede en ander nie. By die Stumkes op Aalwynhoek was dit 20 jaar van konstante veranderinge en vooruitgang. Aalwynhoek Abattoir is ‘n geregistreerde en gelisensieerde slagpale en voorsien aan bekende slaghuise in die omgewing sowel as aan kettingwinkels soos Shoprite Checkers Port Elizabeth & Uitenhage. “DF Slaghuis op Despatch het destyds hulle eerste lam hier by ons gekoop en hulle is steeds goeie kliënte van Aalwynhoek Abattoir,” sê Heinrich Stumke. Die basiese aspekte van die slagbedryf het volgens Heinrich oor die afgelope 20 jaar min

Deesdae spog Aalwynhoek met drie reuse koelkamers waarvan die groot koelkamer sowat 150 bees- en sowat 1 500 skaapkarkasse kan akkommodeer. Die ander twee koelkamers kan onderskeidelik sowat 400 varkkarkasse en 50 geslagte beeste koel hou. Heinrich sê dat Aalwynhoek vanjaar ‘n vierde koelkamer gaan bykry met die doel om die voorraad te verhoog, sodat daar aan die groeiende vleismark voorsien kan word. The Eastern Province Kings could be going head to head against Wales ahead of their international test matches against the Springboks in June. EP Rugby CEO, Charl Crous confirmed that talks were underway between SARU and Wales for them to play a match against the EP Kings on Tuesday, the 10th of June, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Crous said while talks were advanced, the fixture still needed to be approved by the SARU executive council. “Wales are looking at bringing a wider squad down for the tour and are looking for a bit of game time ahead of their test matches,” he said. “This is obviously a great opportunity for us in terms of preparing for our entry into Currie Cup Premier Division, with the chance to test ourselves against an internationally competitive team as highly

rated as Wales,” he said. Commenting on the mid week game, Crous said this was to fit in with Wales schedule, as they were playing their first test match against South Africa in Durban on Saturday, 14 June before heading to Nelspruit a week later. ew kid on the block, Mzwabantu Dabaza from KwaNobuhle made history when he beat the experienced East Londoner, Lutho Nkonki for the vacant Eastern Cape Junior Flyweight championship at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday. Dabaza, who came to the ring with a professional record of 10 fights, 8 wins and 5Kos with 2 losses, stopped Nkonki (19-10-4KOs-and 9 losses) after seven blistering rounds. “The referee (Andile Matika) stopped the fight in the seventh round after realising that Nkonki was taking too much punishment from my boy,” said an overjoyed Dabaza’s mentor, Louis Phillip. Phillip who trains his boxers at the MiniGym in John Street, Uitenhage was pretty sure that fit-as-a-fiddle Dabaza would be crowned the new champion, come the fight night. Phillip admitted however, that he did not

expect the classic and stylish way in which his protege was going to annex the title from the East London foe in front of his vociferous crowd. “I thought we had over-trained. The boy was 47.35 kg at the official weigh-in in East London, way below the 48.98 kg JuniorFlyweight limit. “But this is the title that was the launchpad for the careers of great boxing champions, Vuyani Nene and Mzukisi Sikali. We had to bring it home - where it belongs,” said Phillip proudly. Nene went on to become the SA Junior flyweight and ABU Junior Bantamweight titlist whereas Sikali continued to become the WBU Junior-flyweight and IBO world Junior Bantamweight champion. Phillip said next stop would be for Dabaza to challenge for the national Junior-flyweight title held by Thabiso Moorosi of the Free State in order to complete the task of his predecessors - that of bringing back the lost glory to Nelson Mandela Bay boxing.
