or the fourth time and third consecutive year Algoa Toyota Uitenhage was awarded the coveted Toyota President’s Award as Small Dealership of the Year. This means Algoa Toyota has been the best small Toyota dealership in South Africa for 2012, 2014, 2015 and now also 2016. Despatch Preparatory attempted to break the Guinness World Records for the Largest Mass African Dance and did it, but now awaits the officiality! In celebration of the school’s 45th anniversary, the entire school, all learners, teachers, support staff, admin staff and grounds workers, last Friday, April 21st, participated in a lively Miriam Makeba “Pata-Pata” dance. Asja Strydom, administrator of the attempt, stated that in total they had 527 participants, which breaks the current world record of 503 dancers. “I’m in the process of finalising the official submission, as Guinness World Records requires a large amount of photographic and video evidence, along with statements from 13 different professional witnesses,” said Strydom. Principal of Despatch Preparatory, Madeléne Sachse said, “the administration of the event is the biggest job.” Anjé Snyders, head of the school’s events committee was enthralled by the event saying the most amazing aspect of the entire process was the sense of pride it created amongst the learners and staff. “Watching our parents dance with us in our last attempt gave each and every staff member goosebumps,” said Snyders. Sachse told the UD News that the official declaration of the attempt can take up to 12 weeks to process. “As soon as we receive notification from the Guinness World Records office we will let the public know about our officiality, although as numbers go, we have broken the world record and we are very proud of it,” said Sachse. he first annual Face of Uitenhage beauty contest will be hosted at the Uitenhage Town Hall on May 1st and serves as a fundraiser for Princess Diaries, a youth female life skills and awareness project. p Farewell to much loved priest HEILIE COMBRINCK
F
ather Maxwell Salsone from Uitenhage, surely is one of few people in the world, who enjoyed the honour of meeting both the iconic Mother Theresa as well as Pope Francis. He has served the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Port Elizabeth for 52 years, the last 13 years of his career of which as priest in Uitenhage at St Anthony’s Parish. Father Max will be retiring on 30 April 2017. “Looking back on 52 years of priesthood, I echo what the psalmist says: ‘What marvels the Lord worked for me. Indeed I was glad’” said Father Max, as he is known in the community. “I would like to thank the Bishops under whom I served, as well as my fellow priests - past and present – who helped me through good times and bad. I am also grateful towards the sisters who taught me the faith. I would also like to thank my fellow clergymen from other denominations whom I had the privilege to serve with in the Uitenhage community and elsewhere,” said Father Max. He was born on 28 February 1942 into a Catholic family, received his education at Catholic schools and completed his matric at Holy Rosary Convent in Cradock. He pursued his priestly studies at Pontificio Collegio Urbano “De Propaganda Fides” in Rome, where

He spent 7 years in Rome with 464 students from 63 countries. Father Max was ordained at St Augustine’s Cathedral by Bishop Green during 1965. Highlights of his stay in Rome include being present at the opening of Vatican Council II in 1963. He was also present at the funeral of Pope John XXIII, and at the election of
=Father Max (right) meeting Pope Francis. Pope Paul VI. And he witnessed the canonization of St Martin de Porres in 1965. During 1966 he was assigned to St Martin de Porres Parish and from there he became parish priest of St Francis Xavier (East London), Holy Spirit (Arcadia), St Bernadette’s (Walmer), St James (Schauderville), Church of the Assumption (Somerset East), St John’s and St Mary’s (Cradock), St John’s (Bedford) and St Anthony’s, St Joseph’s and Mary Mount (Uitenhage). During his early years in Port Elizabeth, Father Max was involved in various community projects and for his contribution to the upliftment of the people of Port Elizabeth, Salsoneville was named in his honour. He served his last 13 years as a priest in Uitenhage. During this

time Father Max celebrated both his 70th birthday as well as his Golden Jubilee Anniversary as a priest. In celebration of these milestones Father Max’s parishioners assisted him to visit Rome twice. During his last visit to Rome in 2016 he was able to attend the Canonization of St Theresa of Calcutta, attend his class’ 50th re-union and celebrated mass with Pope Francis. “To all my parishioners in every parish where I have ministered, thank you for accepting me the way I am. A special thanks to my parishioners in St Anthony’s, St Joseph’s and Mary Mount who for the past 13 years allowed me into their hearts and homes and to become part of their families,” said Father Max. “As priests we often hear, ‘You have given up so much to be a priest’

oes your team have the perfect balance of speed, strength, agility, brains and brawn to be crowned the Uitenhage Market Day Boeresport champions? Uitenhage Round Table 14 in conjunction with the Uitenhage Market Day will be hosting boeresport games at Willow Dam during the next outdoor market day on Sunday, May 7th at 10:30. Boeresport games are regarded as excellent team building activities loaded with fun and laughter for both participants as well as spectators. According to Lilly de Jong from the Uitenhage Market, a team should consist of four members. All proceeds of the games will go towards a little girl, Mischa, who suffers from
microtia which is a congenital condition in which the ear does not develop properly. The games will include tug of war, which is an excellent teamwork exercise and it is not always the strongest muscle power team that wins, but often the team with clever tactics and brain power. An old classic, the three-legged race, is all about cooperation and not speed, as is the wheelbarrow race, potato and spoon race and egg toss and catch. An all-time favourite is bokdrolspoeg! Here participants have to spit buck or goat droppings and the one who does it the furthest wins. It sounds disgusting but this game is popular and is a skill. )A team’s entry fee to participate and stand the chance to be crowned boeresport champions is only R50. Total of 111 suspects arrested over weekend Several disruptive operations were conducted over the past weekend and it resulted in the arrest of a total of 111 suspects for various crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster. These arrests include various offences. Two suspects (aged 23 and 35) were apprehended by members of the Crime Combating Unit attached to the Uitenhage Operational Command Centre, within minutes after committing a crime last Sunday morning.
“They were arrested after a VW Polo Cross was hijacked in KwaNobuhle. The vehicle was recovered,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. “The community of Despatch assisted the police who arrested a 19-year-old male suspect, who allegedly was involved in a business robbery last Saturday afternoon.” Four persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor and 19 suspects were ap-
prehended for the illegal possession of drugs. Police teach preschoolers about fingerprints An educational display was hosted by members from the Uitenhage Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) and the Uitenhage K9 Unit for pre-school learners from the Rainbow Nursery School in Uitenhage. WO Jacques Wasserman and WO Zakes Vulani, both forensic experts, explained and demonstrated to the learners how unique each person’s fingerprints are and how SAPS can lift fingerprints from any crime scene, even a plastic 2L bottle. Each learner received his/her handprint with his/her name on it as a keepsake. SAPS National Search and Rescue K9 Winners, WO Jaco Potgieter and his four-legged partner, Ben, visited the learners and interacted with them. The learners had the opportunity to touch Ben and even play ball with him. In closing, WO Jacques Adlem and Sgt Melisa Potgieter, from Uitenhage K9, ensured that the “crook” was apprehended by Lenox, who could not wait to tackle the “crook”. Na ’n reuse- skoonmaakproses is ’n voedsel vriendelike Perspex-bak in die personeelkamer gebou. Die tertedoor-span het bestaan uit 30 ATKV-leerders en 4 personeellede, geklee in haarnette, handskoene en voorskote. Hulle het 8 ure lank gewerk om die tert voor te sit. Net een kwart van die enorme tert was nodig om vir Brandwag se meer as 800 leerders en personeellede elk ’n 7 cm by 7 cm porsie te gee. Honger magies en soet-tande kon nader staan vir tweede en derde happies. Die drie kwarte van die tert wat oorgebly het, is aan plaaslike liefdadigheidsorganisasies geskenk om Brandwag se soete verjaardag met soveel mense moontlik te deel. (Heilie Combrinck)

VW 5km fun run back on track Volkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA) PeoplePavilion in Uitenhage will host its third annual Volkswagen Fun Run on Saturday. The Volkswagen Fun Run which is now firmly entrenched on the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion sporting calendar is open to all VWSA employees, their loved ones and the public. The race will start at the PeoplePavilion, turn left into Algoa Road, past the Market Square Volkswagen Dealership, into the Volkswagen Manufacturing Plant and then back along the same route to finish at the PeoplePavilion. “This event is just one of many sporting events hosted by the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director: Volkswagen Group South Africa. “I invite the Nelson Man-
dela Bay Metro community to join us for this great and fun-filled family event.” Registration is R20 per person and registration forms are available at Brian Bands Sports in Port Elizabeth and Brockett’s Sports in Uitenhage. The first male and female runners will each receive R1 000 prize money. Those that finish in second and third place will receive R500 and R250 respectively. “As with the previous races, the proceeds from the registration will be donated to the Lake Farm Centre for mentallychallenged adults. Volkswagen has been supporting the Lake Farm Centre for over a decade. The medals which finishers will receive on the day are made by the residents of the centre,” concluded Schaefer

School launches first internal newspaper Despatch Preparatory teachers and scholars have launched their first internal newspaper making history for the school. School events, photos, articles written by learners and staff alike are all in the “Preppie” as it is fondly referred to. “Parents are able to, for the first time, see all the events that take place at the school, as many of our parents are not in a position to belong to our Facebook or WhatsApp groups,” said Shenel Zi-
etsman editor of the school newspaper. According to Madeléne Sachse, principal at Despatch Preparatory, they were very fortunate to have all the printing sponsored by Xerox, who were kind enough to deliver the Preppie promptly to them. “As schools, without the support of the community, we are unable to break the barriers that have existed for far too long,” said Sachse. Convent Primary celebrates 130th year Uitenhage Convent Roman Catholic Primary School was founded when a handful of Sisters from the Dominican Order were sent to Uitenhage in 1887 to start schools. These Sisters from the Holy Rosary in Port Elizabeth then founded the Sacred Heart school as well as St Thomas for older learners in a house in John Street. The following year, the plot of ground stretching from John Street to Baird Street was purchased on which to build a primary school facing Baird Street. The first building housed Grades 1-7
(sub A & B, standards 1-5). All the educators were Dominican Sisters at first. They lived in a flat on the first floor of the school. Much later (in the 1960s) when the first building became structurally insecure, the present school was built and completed in 1967. The old school was demolished. First school for all races It was the first school in Uitenhage to open its doors to all races in 1981. Although it is a Roman Catholic School, all Christian denominations and other religions
are welcome. The present principal, John Dennis, is the 6th lay principal and the first principal took over from the Sisters in 1984. Commemorating 130 years The school is celebrating 130 years of being in existence this year. To commemorate this, mass will be celebrated at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Baird Street on August 11th. )A gala evening will be held at the VW PeoplePavilion on August 12th. 126TH YEAR OF GOLFING IN UITENHAGE
Club offers more than game of golf

or the past 126 years the game of golf has been part of the history of Uitenhage. In fact, the Uitenhage Golf Club is ranked amonst the six oldest clubs in South Africa! It was established in 1891 by Scottish immigrants with 8 members on a 9 hole course hacked out of the countryside in the then new residential area of Van Riebeeck Heights. By 1901 the club was moved to land adjacent to the Swartkops River, where it stayed for 49 years. Then in 1950, with a membership of 232, it was relocated to its current location next to Willow Dam. “The game of golf has not changed much, but membership to the Uitenhage Golf Club has changed in that non-golfers can now also be members to enjoy a relaxed time in a friendly environment,” said Morris Olivier, manager at the Uitenhage Golf Club. Greens This course was designed by a Doctor Murray from Cape Town and for the first time in Uitenhage, golf could be played covering 18 holes. “The current golf course has been undergoing constant improvements over the last 5 years,” said Olivier. “All 18 greens have been seeded with Royal Blue grass during the past 10 years, which offers a better putting surface. What is of interest is that the greens at the previous course were of Kimberley Blue ground. This was a

vast difference from what golfers will experience when playing today.” According to Olivier, by June 1965, the first purified sewerage effluent water was used on the course. “This resulted in huge improvements to playing conditions, which have been ongoing ever since.” By 1981 membership stood on 429 and in 1985 the club embarked on a programme to improve the condition of the greens with the introduction of Bent Grass greens. At present, green fees are very reasonable, with special rates on offer on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday. On Friday there is a special offer for anyone. Club competitions are held on Wednesday afternoons and all day Saturday for those who want more than a social round of golf. Club houses, facilities & braai The first club house, next to the Swartkops River, was constructed in 1903 and it cost 125 pounds. Some 47 years down the line or rather greens, the current club house was built. During 1994 major building alterations took place with the creating of a new Proshop, Halfway House and Sundeck on to the main bar. “In the beginning of the year we upgraded the bar area, dining area and built a new deck with braai facilities. If you are a group of 10 or more, you can buy braai packs from the bar and use the deck facilities,” said Olivier. Visitors will also find an upgraded men’s locker room and well stocked Proshop,

through which golf carts can be hired, and a golf course that is of the best in the province. “Lady visitors are well catered for and are most welcome,” said Olivier. The hall can be hired by anyone and the fee of R2 000 which includes tables, crockery and chairs as well as draping. The in-house catering should, however, be used. Happy hour, light meals & draws Every Tuesday and Thursday is Happy Hour time at the club house, for the duration of each day. The club also offers light meals during daytime and a limited menu has been introduced for Friday evenings. On Mondays and Wednesdays home cooked take-away meals are available at R40 and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays take-away pizzas are available. “There is a special WhatsApp group established for the take-away services. It currently stands at 90 members and is still increasing,” said Olivier Also on Fridays is the attendance draw for all members and social members. It starts at R250 and grows every week with R250. For those attending the big draw, there is also a R10 attendance draw. “Thanks to keen golfer Gert van Huyssteen, VW Market Square now sponsors an extra R500 attendance draw every mid and last Friday of the month,” said Olivier. Membership Currently the membership stands at 328 and visitors to the club are most welcome.
