Lt Col Naidu was promoted on 1 February as the Provincial Commander: Media Liaison. She is expected to resume her duties in Kimberly from 11 March. “It is with mixed emotions that I will be leaving,” said Lt Col Naidu who has established very good working relations and rapport with the local media since she came to Uitenhage in 2006. Naidu, who is a shining example of the type of communications, officer that journalists like to work with, boasts 30 years experience in the service she joined in 1983. According to Naidu, the police service was the only profession offered to Indian women outside of teaching at the time. Naidu quit her studies towards an education degree at the University of Durban Westville after six months and headed straight to the police college. Coming out of college, she started working in Pinetown until she got a promotion as a Media Liaison Officer in Uitenhage in 2006. “When I came to this area I did not know anybody. It was a whole new challenge but I am happy that I came and established good working relations with the media.” She is married to former policeman Kevin Naidu and is the mother of a 21 year-old son Emile, a NMMU thirdyear Civil Engineering student. “I would like to thank all of you whom I have dealt with in the past seven years. I hope I have served you well in bringing you up to date reporting on issues and news relating to Uitenhage and Humansdorp clusters,” she said. ;Lt Col Priscilla Naidu

Rotariërs skenk skoolboeke

Police in Uitenhage are investigating after the body of an unknown man was found last Saturday, 23 February at about 07:40 at the corner of Pieter le Roux and Chase Street in town. The unknown man wore black pants, grey shirt, navy blue jersey, white and blue sport shoes and had a white baseball cap on. He also had a backpack with him. Ambulance personnel declared the man dead on the scene. Anyone who might be able to identify the man can contact D/W/O Jacques Nell on 0084 811 2975.

Herbie the Love Bug, a 1963 VW Beetle (1200cc) pulled its matching travel companion, a compact “QEK Junior Camper” into Uitenhage early last Thursday morning. At the steering wheel was Dominikus “Domi” Hocher (30) accompanied by his soul mate Zainab Staubmann (27). Both hail from Vienna in Austria, whilst Zainab has a fair volume of Egyptian blood in her veins. The couple travels in retro style with maps, fresh air, good companionship, guitar and Arabic lute, taking it day by bay. No cellphones, no GPS, no aircon and no safari paraphernalia attached to the Beetle. “The less, the more freeing it is, to just live in the moment,” said Zainab. “We feel very humble and are thankful to live our dream. We believe in what we are doing. Sometimes people criticize us, but at the end of the day each person is responsible for his or her choice of living. Our choice makes us happy!” Domi and Zubaida have since 2009 travelled through five continents, criss-crossing vast landscapes, tackled unbeaten tracks and visited ultra-modern cities. “When I bought the Beetle, I had a rough idea about its mechanics, but had to learn everything before we started our world tour with Herbie. When you’re on the road you can only depend on yourself,” said Domi. The Herbie world travellers visited the VW AutoPavilion, to say “hello” to Uitenhage’s own Herbie Beetle and thereafter visited Addo Elephant National Park before taking the N2 road north. “South Africa is a beautiful country with diverse landscapes, beautiful beaches and friendly people. We had to face a lot of difficult and nerve-racking challenges along the west coast of Africa and really are feeling very relaxed here.” Herbie, its QEK camper and their travelling inhabitants are now heading to the Kruger National Park. Thereafter they will cross the boarder to make their way along the east coast of the continent through Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and then all the way parallel with the Nile, finally reaching Egypt to complete their African journey. Theft of ‘older’ vehicles Police in Uitenhage are appealing to the public to install additional security measures, specifically anti-theft devices in their motor vehicles. According to the records of the police there was an increase in the theft of motor vehicles over the last couple of weeks. “Parking areas of specific companies were targeted. Discussions were held with the various companies concerned,” said police spokersperson W/O Gerda Swart. “The police would like to advise owners of especially older or less expensive motor vehicles to assist them by installing these devices to prevent further theft of motor vehicles in the Uitenhage area.” Be on the look-out for any suspicious vehicles or persons in your neighborhood and report it to your local police station.

woman with a passion for Uitenhage and who has for the past 20 years served on various task teams which had an interest in seeing this region develop, now bids the town farewell as the Mother City will be her new home. Nafeesa Dinie started at the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative when it was founded in 2001. She was part of a delegation which was seconded to go to Wolfsburg Germany. As a senior project manager, she spearheaded many of the UDDI’s projects such as the NMB Logistics Park, Gusco Sewing Cooperation, NMB Science & Technology Centre, TATI, Ukulungisa Wood Manufacturing and Uitenhage Pride Campaign. “She has served the people of this town whole heartedly and that is why we feel we are losing an asset – her heart was in the right place...,” said UDDI colleague Milisa Piko. During her farewell, organised by the UDDI, it was thought a good gesture to donate much needed funds to the Underprivileged Children’s Ministry which was a project close to her heart. Alida Davis, who runs this ministry each Saturday at 09:00 in John Street, received the cheque from Nafeesa and Richard.

Top primary school athletes in action The top athletes from primary schools from all over the Eastern Cape will be seen in action at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan athletics stadium this weekend. Age groups that will be participating are from U/10 to U/13. The programme starts tomorrow when athletes compete in the following events: Boys and Girls U/13 1 500m walk, Boys and Girls

U/12-13 Javelin, Boys and Girls U/13 Discus, Boys and Girls U/10 Shot Put and all hurdle events for Boys and Girls U/10-U/13. The rest of the programme will follow on Saturday starting at 08:00. Entrance to the event is free of charge for athletes and team managers, but there will be an entrance fee for the public. The public are invited to support these future stars.

Biggest pot of money at darts tournament The 2013 Eastern Province Classic Darts Tournament has the biggest pot of money yet in the tournament’s history. Hosted by the Fish River Sun, it is open to all darts players in the province, with entries on a stay and play basis at the Fish River Sun. It will also be a weekend of fun promises tournament co-ordinator Vernon Human. As a warm-up on Friday, March 8, players will be matched against each other in drawn teams, with the tournament starting at two in the afternoon.

This will be followed by a “country-style” fancy dress party and dance. The nominated doubles tournament will start at ten on Saturday, March 9, followed by a karaoke evening. Singles will face off for the Eastern Cape championship from ten on the Sunday. Around R15 000 in prizes is up for grabs, according to Human. Players could see the tournament as a prelude to for Darts Nationals, which will be held in Port Elizabeth from July 30.

ore than 32 000 people packed into the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium last Saturday evening to witness the Southern Kings make history when they beat the Western Force by 22-10. The Southern Kings, The Sharks and the Vodacom Bulls set the tone with good opening round wins despite some rustiness as Vodacom Super Rugby got underway last Saturday.

It was a special evening as the Southern Kings won their first-ever match at this level. By doing that, the Kings became the first debut winner of the last four teams that joined Vodacom Super Rugby. There was another record - at 18 years of age, Sergeal Petersen became the youngest South African to play Vodacom Super Rugby since 1997. To make his debut even more special, last

year’s Coca-Cola Craven Week Player of the Tournament scored two tries. Previously, the youngest South African to feature in Vodacom Super Rugby was former Springbok back Jaco van der Westhuizen. The Kings have a bye this week and will be preparing for their match against the Sharks on March 9 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
