Bikers’ fun day at U’hage SPCA

he Animal Run 2014, a bikers’ event in aid of the Uitenhage SPCA, will be held on Saturday with the aim to raise much needed funds.

Bikers from across the Metro and surrounding areas are invited to get on their iron horses in support of animals without homes at the Uitenhage SPCA. Bikers will meet at the VW AutoPavilion at 09:00. The convoy will leave for the SPCA at 09:30. The entrance fee

to the Animal Run is R40 and each biker will be entitled to a badge and a choice between a hamburger, boerewors roll or bacon and egg roll. Other activities of the day include food stalls, music, park-and-sell, lucky draws and

Alarming increase in burglaries T

he Uitenhage police have noted with great concern the number of cases reported of residential burglaries in the Despatch and Uitenhage policing areas. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, burglaries in Despatch occur more frequently in Azalea Park and Windsor Park. In Uitenhage all the residential areas are targeted. “We request the assistance of the community to be aware and report any suspicious looking activities. Burglaries occur mainly during the day, when occupants have already left for work,” said W/O Swart. “In some of the cases the doors are forced opened by the intruders and electronic equipment is taken. We believe vehicles are used to transport the stolen goods from the houses.” The public are made aware of the following hints: •Ensure doors and gates are locked when you leave •Ensure that all your apertures are protect-

The UD News team operated a hairspray stall earlier this year at the popular Anibrandfees where festival-goers could have had their hair coloured. This was all in the spirit of goodwill to raise funds in assisting the Cosmos Rape Crisis Centre with promotional material in promoting the centre. Down Town Printers Uitenhage supported the project. In support of Women’s Month activities, the banner was handed over to Warrant Officer Eugene Smith, who is in charge of the centre. “From day one that we used the banner at schools to inform learners regarding the centre, there has been a definite increase in feed-back,” said W/O Smith. “Several new cases of sexual abuse and rape have been reported to the police.” According to Smith, learners often are shy and afraid to speak out. The banner was professionally designed with the aim to reflect a positive message and inspire girls and women to take charge of their lives. “The quote of a rape survivor printed on the banner stating ‘Don’t hide. Speak out - it gives you the power. It cannot destroy you’ definitely has an impact. I think it encourages girls and women to speak out,” said W/O Smith. The public are thanked for their support of the project. The Centre is situated at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital.

Verlede Desember het Connor Barnard byna in ’n honde-aanval gesterf. Hy was saam met sy ma Ischke Barnard by ‘n vriendin se huis. Terwyl sy haar baba in die sitkamer gevoer het, het die vriendin Connor na die agterplaas geneem om hom die swembad te wys. ’n Boerboelreun het Connor in die agterplaas aangeval. Volgens Ischke het sy haar seuntjie se bloedstollende gille gehoor en uitgehardloop. “Ek het die hond geslaan en geskop en hom van Connor probeer afkry. Ek sou liewer dat hy my hand afbyt as dat hy Connor verder seermaak. Daar was so baie bloed,” het Ischke Barnard vertel. Connor se regteroor was amper afgeskeur en ‘n stuk van sy linkeroor was afgebyt. Sy gesig was vol byt- en kneusplekke en een van sy vingers was op twee plekke gebreek. Connor het intussen ‘n hele paar rekonstruktiewe chirurgie ondergaan. “Dit was ‘n aaklige, onvergeetlike gesig. Maar vandag, skaars nege maande later, het Connor so mooi herstel dat hy so ewe ‘n wenner was in die Winter Wonderland fotokompetisie,” spog Vivien Rautenbach, of “Ouma Lovie” soos haar agterkleinseun

Availability of drugs at local schools shock HEILIE COMBRINCK

Drugs have taken over in some of our local schools and if we wait for the government to step in, we might lose our children to this vicious cycle of substance abuse.” This statement is by Gert Williams, the general secretary of Families against Drugs (FAD). He also serves on the Local Drug Action Committee of the Nelson Mandela Metro which runs an office at Kamesh Police Station to render counselling services to affected families, drug testing and support

group meetings. Williams is a recovering drug addict and ex-convict. Rotary gets disabled on the go again The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South has come to the rescue of a woman whose wheelchair had been driven over by a taxi she had travelled in. With the help of Attie Erasmus, who appealed to the Rotary Club on behalf of Mrs Nompumelelo to assist her with the damaged wheelchair, President Leon Fish and his team took care of the situation. The Rotary Clyb bought her a new wheelchair with the kind assistance of Mickey Swift of Mosel KliniCare Pharmacy.

Brandwag in finaal na sege oor Hoërskool Punt Brandwag het Saterdag in ’n spannende wedstryd teen Hoërskool Punt op Mosselbaai ’n plek in die finaal van Die Burger se rugbykompetisie vir hoërskole oopgespeel. Brandwag het Punt aangedurf as die semifinalis wat die Oostelike Provinsie verteenwoordig in die afdeling vir mediumgroot skole. Punt het die Suid-Westelike Distrik verteenwoordig. Streltizia soccer crowned champions The Strelitzia High School U/19 soccer team was invited to participate in the 2014 Linkside Soccer Festival following the team’s success at various local events. Strelitzia built up a good reputation at soccer events like the Victoria Park Soccer Challenge, NMMU Charity Cup and also performed well at the SA Sports Soccer tournament held earlier in East London. At Linkside, Strelitzia lost to Paterson High 1-0 in the first match, followed by a 0-0 draw versus St. Dominics Priory and beat Bergsig 3-0 in their last group match to progress to the semi-finals. The semi-final was contested between Strelitzia and Paterson, where Strelitzia won the match on penalties following a goalless draw at full-time. In the final Strelitzia played a strong opponent in Ithembelihle and won the final also on penalties. Strelitzia were crowned champions at the Linkside to top a successful year for Strelitzia Soccer.
