RIEBEEK COLLEGE GIRLS’ HIGH The beloved Riebeek College Girls’ High School teacher Jayde Panayiotou who was abducted last week on Tuesday and found murdered the next day near, was laid to rest on Tuesday at the Mater Dei Roman Catholic Church. At the school colleagues and learners paid tribute to her in various ways. The school’s entrance and foyer were filled with flowers, candles and messages of hope. Jayde’s death ignites public’s stance T
here is an overall feeling of frustration after the death of Jayde Panayiotou. Raw emotions are running high and people are in a hurry for results and justice. “Her murder is disgusting. We were living in hopes that she was still alive. The news of her death brought everybody down,” said Pat Unsworth, chairperson of the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum. “When it comes so close to home is when you really feel it the most. This is why there is an outcry. The whole of Port Elizabeth and the whole of Uitenhage all are crying at the same
time for this one girl who was a victim of this horrendous crime. “The cities are in unison for once, they are all in one mind and they all feel the same way and they don’t want it to happen to anybody else.” CPF members were prepared to assist the police with the search for Jayde. When the news came of her death, CPF members were the last to leave the scene at Market Square where the community gathered in grief at her murder. “We lit this candle when we heard of her death and we will keep it burning till after her

Old Muirite supports SPCA from abroad HEILIE COMBRINCK “Mark Simms – what does one say about such a unique individual?” These are the words of Deirdre Swift from the Uitenhage SPCA management board who said they were hard pressed indeed, to find the right words to thank Mark for his continued support of the organisation and his concern for the welfare of the animals in the shelter. “Despite living abroad in Indonesia, Mark has continued to support the organisation both financially and in an advisory capacity for many years. “Particularly commendable was his immediate response to the appeal to the public for assistance with the organisation’s veterinary bills earlier this year. His compassion for animals in need was truly demonstrated
by his actions and is greatly appreciated by all at the SPCA,” said Swift, who acts as the Treasurer of the Uitenhage SPCA management board. Mark matriculated from Muir College in 1979, where he had an illustrious and impressive school career and excelled in many areas. He left South Africa in 1997, travelling to Indonesia to conduct a security management training program for an international conglomerate, and has been there ever since. After travelling extensively through South East Asia he finally settled in Jakarta in 2007, where he is currently the Director of an Australian based electronics security company. “Mark’s generosity and compassion is not only limited to the SPCA. He spends much of his spare time involved in fund-raising for orphanages and sports development for the Indonesian youth. He further arranges regional sports events for expatriates and to ensure

People with diabetes invited to support group HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage Diabetes Support Group will have its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 6th (18:00) at the Andries Marais Boardroom at Netcare Cuyler Hospital. The special guest speaker is Runeshan Moodley, a biokineticist at NMMU Madibaz Sport, who operates as their fitness and conditioning coach for Madibaz cricket and hockey teams. According to Razya Nathoo from the Uitenhage Diabetes Support Group, people who suffer with high blood pressure and have cholestral are most welcome at the meeting as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholestrol usually go together. Moodley was employed as a Biokineticist at Muir College in 2009 and then start-
ed his own practice. During 2013 he took up a position at Volkswagen South Africa as their biokineticist and gym manager at the newly built PeoplePavilion. Since the beginning of the year, he was appointed as biokineticist at NMMU Madibaz Sport. He is still running his private practice on a part-time basis at Muir College Boys High School. Homeless children treated with nice wash HEILIE COMBRINCK
W
hat most people regard as normal and part of their daily routine, to bath or shower, was a pleasant and caring experience to 35 street children from Uitenhage. “Our aim with this project is to try and restore the dignity of these children and to assist them where we possibly can,” said Angelique Nell from Ubuntu Community Development Solutions, which initiated this Child Clean-up Campaign. It was held at the restroom facilities of the Uitenhage Central Sports Fields in conjunction with various social development organi-
sations, social clubs, volunteers and sponsors. “We want to create awareness among the public as well as the respective authorities dealing with street children that there is an increasing social problem in Uitenhage regarding these homeless children. “We need to find a self-sustainable, long term solution for them,” said Nell. She emphasized that it is of importance to build and strengthen relationships with these children to get them involved in future projects concerning education and development of these homeless children. “The children who turned up were very open to the love and affection given by volun-
teers. Their need as children to be taken care of could be seen in their eyes. “The 26 volunteers loved braiding the girls’ hair and singing songs with the children while they waited to be served with lunch.” UCDS would like to thank Mncedi Mjana at NMB Sports and Recreation for arranging the repair of the geysers and Jenny for offering the restroom facilities. Music of legendary metal pioneers heard in U’hage Loved by young and old for their heavy but melodic style of music, Metallica are considered pioneers of modern metal music. Some of their best hits will be played tomorrow evening in Uitenhage by top musicians. Rockface Productions and Eastern Cape Motors will proudly present the Rockface showband performing the music of Metallica. Metallica produced hits such as Enter sandman, Nothing else matters, For whom the bell tolls, The unforgiven and Whiskey in the jar to name but a few. Fronting the band is Francois Hugo, a professional singer of many years’ standing. He has played in some top national rock bands and has done many tribute shows, including most of the songs in the Metallica catalogue.
On lead guitar is Jethro Butow, a legend in the music business. He is arguably the top rock guitarist this country has ever produced and was inducted into the SA Rock Hall of Fame two years ago. Backing him on guitar is a young player with heaps of talent, Arno Erasmus. The rhythm section consists of two of the country’s top professionals, Deon Mattheus on bass and his brother Kevin on drums. The show at Danskraal in Uitenhage starts tomorrow evening at 21:00 with Pink Lippz as the supporting act playing from 20:00.
