nce upon a time ... long before the auto-industry hit Uitenhage, wool and mohair were the driving forces for putting the town on the international map.

Ever since the local mohair industry has developed into a globally renowned export industry, a fact few Uitenhage residents are really aware of. It recently expanded its services with the opening of Windfall mohair factory store in Graaff Reinet Road. The Windfall Mohair Blanket factory store exists because Hinterveld manufactures products mainly for overseas “private label customers” or “made to order customers”. “During this process there is quite a bit of sampling before the clients sign off on the designs and colours that they like. “The excess samples are sold via the Windfall mohair blanket factory store and from time to time we have ‘not so perfect’ products that may be irregular sized and they are also sold via this store. Sometimes rejects are sold in the store but they are identified as that,” said Jackie. South Africa is the world leader in mohair production with most of the world’s Angora goats being farmed in the Karoo. Jackie explained that the goats are shorn (hair cut) twice a year and their hair ends up in Uitenhage where it is processed at the the following factories: the fleeces are washed and combed at Gubb & Inggs, and then spun into yarns at Mohair Spinners South Africa, dyed at Speciality Yarn Dyers and woven into fabric at the Hinterveld mill in Hendrik van Eck Drive. The new Windfall Mohair Blanket Factory store is situated at 75 Graaff Reinet Road where Michelle or Adelia will gladly assist the public. Look out for the tree that is wrapped in the brightly coloured mohair fabric made from off cuts. They are open Monday to Saturday, so those that work during the week can pop past on a Saturday until 13:00. Don’t be ‘selfish’ when discharging fireworks HEILIE COMBRINCK Every year during Guy Fawkes or New Year’s Day numerous gruesome cases are reported of pets scaling walls and getting lost, maimed or killed on roads as a result of being terrified of fireworks. Therefore the Municipality advises all pet owners during the forthcoming Guy Fawkes (Wednesday, November 5th) preferably to keep their pets indoors or at least locked-up and constantly to monitor their condition and try to calm them. According to an official letter regarding Guy Fawkes, the Municipality will allow residents to discharge fireworks for a twohour period only, namely between 19:0021:00 and at designated places only. “Fireworks are potentially dangerous and the indiscriminate discharging thereof is irritating to others and experienced as traumatic by animals,” said Councillor Pieter Terblanche of Ward 51 in Uitenhage.

Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy Standing Committee Chairperson Andile Mfunda said this was part of the realization of the Municipality’s objective to provide sustainable electricity to all residents living in informal settlements and state subsidized houses. “This means that we would like to electrify and connect 2 173 households as per our 7-year Human Settlement Plan. “Our team is working in line with the housing programme and connects only completed state subsidized houses and shacks occupied by legal beneficiaries on serviced or pegged sites,” Mfunda ex-

plained. Council approved a total capital budget allocation of R20 009 510 of which R18 million is funded by the Department of Energy. Mfunda said he was pleased with the municipality’s implementation since July as a total of 683 new connections were installed at a cost of R7,6 million. Some of the projects currently in progress are Motherwell NU29 (Phase 5, 264 shacks), Chatty Extension 1380 (Phase 2, 456 RDP houses), Wells Estate (Phase 3, 300 shacks), Missionvale (Phase 2, 4 and 5, 100 shacks), Rosedale Extension (Phase 1, 400 shacks) and Joe Slovo in Uitenhage (Phase 2, 280 shacks). Cllr Mfunda said the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had a “good story to tell when it comes to housing delivery and electrification, but this fact is seldom recognized by the community we serve.”

Uitenhage loves Bingo! The people of Uitenhage clearly have a love of modern machine-based Bingo, according to Tony Compton of Bingo Royale, which has opened in Cleary Park. “In less than a month we have already had nearly 50 000 people through our doors – and it seems a large number come from Uitenhage. “We are truly delighted with the response from the town, and thank everyone for their support,” he says. There have been a number of jackpot winners from Uitenhage, according to Tony Compton. Excitement is building ahead of Bingo Royale’s first car draw, which will be held on December 13th at 16:00. “We have also introduced a very popular money shower to add to the fun,” says Tony Compton There is also live entertainment on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Bingo Royale gaming floor is open to over 18s only. Cleary Park is easily accessible off the Uitenhage Road/R75. Coming from Uitenhage visitors turn right into Bethelsdorp Road, which then takes motorists straight to Cleary Park. Bingo Royale Cleary Park and the neighbouring Vinny’s Italian Joint restaurant are open from nine in the morning till late at night. Entry is free. There is plenty of parking, as the centre has approximately 1400 parking bays.

;Victory Raceway will host a fun day in aid of the Animal Welfare Society on Saturday, November 1st starting at 12:00 at Victory Raceway, Victoria Drive Walmer. The entry fee per person will be a tin/bag of cat/dog food, which will be donated to AWS. The Nelson Mandela Bay City Half Marathon’s very impressive purse of R350 000 has attracted much more attention than originally expected from across our borders. The prizes for the 5km are awesome, and in keeping with EPA rules will be in the form of vouchers, and not cash. The race starts and finishes at

Pollok Beach at 06:30, and the route is out along Marine Drive, and back along the cycle path. There will be one refreshment station at the 2.5km mark. Their first meetings were held at the Waterford Hotel and the new club quickly became active, producing their first District Governor, Les Swift, within a few years, chartering their first Interact Club (that of Riebeek College) and developing an active Ann’s Club that still functions effectively today. Through the years the club has been involved in many community and international projects, has sponsored and hosted numerous exchange students and Group Study Exchanges. It has become one of the flagship clubs in the district with a present membership of 30 Rotarians, 21 Anns and 6 Interact Clubs under its belt.

The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South recently celebrated its 40th year since the Charter in 1974. Founding member, John Dawson, the town’s Electrical Engineer at that time, had the vision to charter a second club in Uitenhage, since the Rotary Club of Uitenhage was a lunch time club and valuable members were being lost who were unable to attend meetings during the working day. Although he remained a member of the mother club, John encouraged the late Les Swift, Fred Polaczek and Manny Katz and Bill Buchner (who attended the anniversary meeting) to change over to the new club as

Pop-up art exhibition held in aid of ministry

Heilie Combrinck Noddy will be in Uitenhage on Saturday, November 29th from 12:00 to 15:00 for his annual Christmas party, hosted by the Uitenhage Lions Club.

An art café in aid of Gap Ministries has popped up by Tertius van Huyssteen and Llise Dodd’s Pop-up Art Gallery and can be visited today and tomorrow at the DR De Mist church in Uitenhage. “What makes the Art Café interesting is that professional art works will be exhibited next to works of people who have just started their art career or are practising art as a hobby,” said artist Llise Dodd. The trying task of reducing the use of drugs and alcohol at schools is made all the more daunting as a result of the lack of credible and effective awareness drives and initiatives. Last Friday, the CMR Uitenhage branch together with three community organisations - Mabo Foundation, Uitenhage Dependency Support Group and Young At Heart - motivated scholars from Gamble Street High School to sign a pledge to stay drug free and to encourage their peers to do the same. This pledge to stay drug free was initiated by Leonice Vrolick, a fourth-year student at NMMU. Ganief Williams of Mabo Foundation, who presents drug pro-active programs at six schools in the Uitenhage region said, “The integration of all organisations as well as communities plays a vital role towards a drug free society.” Vrolick together with the various organisations will be planning more awareness drives of this nature to target all schools in Uitenhage. Diwali: Educational toys donated

Picnic and family fun at Willow Dam

<Diwali is known as a festival of wealth and prosperity. During this time youths from the Uitenhage Hindu community collected educational toys which they donated to the Occupational Therapy Department at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. Here are some of the children together with Ursula van Heerden and Lolanthe Jansen, Occupational Therapists at the Department. The youths are thanked for their service above self to the local community.

This is the message to be portrayed at the next monthly meeting of the Diabetes Support Group in Uitenhage, who will meet on Tuesday, November 4th at the Muir College clubhouse at 18:00. “For this meeting we would like to encourage all parents who have children suffering from Type 1 diabetes,” said Razya Nathoo from the Diabetes Support Group in Uitenhage. The special guest speakers will be Margie Young, who specialises in assisting Type 1 diabetics, especially children. Janine Ferreira, a Type 1 diabetic will give an inspiring motivation on how to stay positive whilst living with diabetes. “I have been a full time fire fighter for the past 15 years, so all diabetics can do a challenging job and it does not need to stand in your way,” said Janine. “Thanks to Margie and my diabetes team which is Dr Podgorski and sister Hannie Williams as well as my support team Hugo, my dad Jan (who himself is T1 diabetic), my mum and friends for your inspiration,” said Janine. )For more information regarding the Diabetes Support Group in Uitenhage contact Razya Nathoo 082 651 1720 or Martin Prinsloo 082 579 9059.

It was organised to curtail the spread of common germs and viral infections in 70 developing countries, including South Africa. Not all people using a public washroom wash their hands afterwards. Sanitation experts reckon: • 95% Say they wash their hands, while only 67% actually do. •Only 33% use soap and a mere 16% wash for long enough. In most cases proper drying of the hands is also neglected. Research shows that children who have been made aware of the importance of good hand-hygiene and who have practised the habit from an early age had half the diarrheal rates than those who had no exposure. Today’s world of crowded living, endless travelling, shaking of hands and perpetual contact with objects used by others demands improved hand hygiene. If one considers that eight out of 10 respiratory and stomach infections are caused through touch, the importance of proper handwashing becomes clear. Dit was nogal ’n probleem want die laaste dag moes ons ’n uitdaging in woestynsand aanpak saam met twee vroue van ’n ander span. Daar was nie ’n manier om dit te wen sonder om skouer teen skouer saam te werk nie. So, sy geloofsoortuiging het dit vir ons moeilik gemaak en ons het met een enkele punt verloor!” Die tien spanne is elke dag verras met uitdagings en kriteria waaraan hulle moes voldoen. Instrukteurs van De Rust Outdoors het aan die onderskeie spanne punte toegeken vir aspekte soos higiëne, netheid en inspeksie van die bakkies, veiligheid, samewerking en tydsberekening. “Elke aand moes ons kamp opslaan. Op party plekke het ons die Ford Rangers in ’n sirkel getrek en die tente in die middel opgeslaan. Ons moes boomtakke tussen die bakkies pak om te sorg dat roofdiere nie inkom nie. “Dit was ’n asemrowende roete met uiteen-

lopende landskappe waarvan die uitgestrektheid van die aarde my nietig laat voel het. Vir my was die moeilikste van die hele 2 500km definitief Van Zyls-pas. Sy is ook deur De Rust Outdoor uitgenooi om van 4-9 November met dié Ford Ranger op Laingsburg aan die De Beau 4x4 Ladies Trip deel te neem. Volgens Justine is dié kursus om vroue te wys jy kan mooi grimeer én met jou viertrekvoertuig in ruwe terrein gaan rondrits. “As ek net een ding moet noem wat ek deur Ford Odyssey geleer het, was dit om minder terug te hou en meer te leef. ’n Mens moet die lewe geniet en jou drome najaag, om te veel te dink hou ’n mens soms onnodig terug.”

Bikers to celebrate club’s 20th year REPORTER The Workshop Crew Motorcycle Club, which inherited its name from the bikers’ initial meeting place in Despatch, celebrates its 20th year this weekend with a rally at Springs Resort. The club was established on 14th September 1994 at a drinking and party venue in Despatch industrial area. Interestingly enough the clubhouse is now on the same premises as the original meeting place. The Workshop Crew MCC is having its annual Bike Rally at the Springs Resort on the outskirts of Uitenhage from tomorrow until

Sunday (31 October - 2 November). There will be a live band and DJ, with “Shane” as master of ceremonies with lots of lucky draw prizes on Saturday evening. True to its nature this bike rally will host beer drinking competitions as well as biker games. The entrance fee is R150 and cars will be allowed on the site at R30 per vehicle. Although all are welcome, the organisers do request visitors to note that as it is after all a Bike Rally, it is preferable to enter the site on a bike! New record for Big Walk for Cancer REPORTER The Algoa FM Boardwalk Big Walk for Cancer set a new record last Saturday when approximately 9 000 people joined the annual walk for charity. Last year fewer than 8 000 people entered the walk with just over 4 000 people participating on the day with the storm and flooding that occurred the morning of the walk.
