Carnival time in Uitenhage! T
HE Rotary Club of Uitenhage will stage the Carnival for their 25th consecutive year, this coming weekend. “It is a massive battle to organise, but the Rotarians are prepared to abide by their motto ‘Service Above Self’, we will try to make Uitenhage and their community proud,” said Eurika Greeff, president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage. This year’s Carnival will again have the main stage in Caledon Street, accompanied with food and other stalls as well as the pleasureland activities. A secondary stage will be set up on Market Square for alternative entertainment. A kiddies carnival zone with Popsi the Clown, face painting, baby competition and various other interactive activities will also be at this site. The pleasureland will be in close proximity to add to the experience. National Idols, Khaya and Melissa are already contracted to perform at the event with stars from Isidingo also lined up to make an appearance. “We have also created the opportunity for local artists to perform in front of large crowds, adding to their experience and pursuance of their careers as entertainers,” said Greeff. Miss Uitenhage will be crowned tomorrow evening at 20:00.

Three men were arrested by members of Topflight Security for allegedly breaking into a business premises in Uitenhage. It is alleged that the alarm at The Cookie Shop was activated late in the night and when the security vehicle responded, they discovered that the place was already broken into. The owner was contacted and it was established that the cash register and beverages were stolen. Entry to the

Cancer survivors invited to celebration of life brunch Reach For Recovery breast cancer support will be hosting an “all cancer survivor brunch” at Georgiou’s Restaurant off Daniel Pienaar Drive in Uitenhage on the 15th December. This event will be fundraiser for the support group and they aim to do something with a difference. “We want to celebrate life and also to remember those who are no longer with us,” said Estelle Botha, chairperson of Reach For Recovery Uitenhage. Volla nommer 23 onder een dak HEILIE COMBRINCK Een van die land se bekendste Volkswagen Beetle versamelaars het verlede week sy 23ste ikoonmotor, hierdie keer ’n splinternuwe 21ste eeu weergawe, in sy motorhuis ingetrek. Chris van den Heever van Uiten-
hage het ’n uitgebreide versameling Volkswagen Beetles en Kombis en gesels passievol oor elkeen van dié rygoed en waar hy dit opgespoor het. Hy het in ’n 1960 Beetle 1200 by Market Square Volkswagen Uitenhage opgedaag om sy 2012 Beetle 1.2 Design in ontvangs te neem. “Daar is presies 52 jaar verskil tussen dié twee Beetles. Die 1960 een het
‘n 36 perdekrag enjin (sowat 22kW) en die nuwe een se enjin spog met 77kW. Albei het sondakke, maar die ou een is nog ‘n seildak en het die oorspronklike eienaar R95 ekstra uit die sak gejaag. In daardie jare was dit baie geld, omtrent drie maande se kruideniersware,” het Van den Heever gesê. Die 1960 Beetle waarvan die af-
standmeter tans op 78 000 myl staan het hy in Pretoria gaan haal. Van den Heever vertel dat hy replika allooiwiele, wat uit Japan afkomstig is, op dié veteraanmotor aangebring het. “Dit lyk kompleet soos die allooiwiele wat ’n mens in die 1960’s vir Beetles kon opsit.” Van den Heever en sy vrou, wie

This project initiated by former Muir Educator Lynette Wagener, consisted of theory and practical life lessons. RIAAN MARAIS ’n Matriekleerder van Kirkwood se stokperdjie het hom ’n plek by een van die wêreld se grootste jeugwetenskapbyeenkomste verseker. Hein Joubert (18), hoofseun van die Hoërskool Kirkwood, vertrek in Desember na Swede waar hy die Stockholm- Internasionale Jeugwetenskapseminaar sal bywoon as een van net 25 matriekleerders van reg oor die wêreld wat vir die byeenkoms gekies is. Hy het dié eer ontvang met sy skaalmodel van ’n radiobeheerde Leopard 1A4, ’n Duitse oorlogstenk wat tydens die Tweede Wêreldoorlog gebruik is. “My pa bou skaalmodelvliegtuie, maar sulke oorlogsvoertuie het my nog altyd gefassineer. Ek het die tenk se planne in die hande gekry en dit van scratch af gebou,” het Joubert vertel. Elke stukkie van die model,
maak nie saak hoe klein of fyn nie, het hy self uit hout, metaal, plastiek of ander materiaal geskep. Dit word deur ’n klein elektriese motor aangedryf en deur afstandbeheer, soos vir modelvliegtuie, bestuur. Dit voel nog ’n bietjie onwerklik.” Hy is dankbaar sy wetenskaponderwyser, Rikus Bezuidenhout, het hom omgepraat om aan die Eskom-ekspo deel te neem. Volgens Theo van Brouwershaven, skoolhoof van die Hoërskool Kirkwood, is Joubert nou ietwat van ’n plaaslike ikoon. “Ons is baie trots op alles wat Hein bereik het. Die hele gemeenskap sien hom as ’n ambassadeur vir die skool en dorp. “Hy is ’n uitstekende voorbeeld waarna ander kinders ook kan streef.” Joubert gaan volgende jaar meganiese ingenieurswese by die Universiteit Stellenbosch studeer.

The Property Poser panel has been approached by a reader who recently purchased a property that includes a garden flat with an existing tenant. The reader says the previous owner entered into a year-long lease agreement about three months ago and the lessee would like to stay on despite the change of ownership. New mountain bike trail near U’hage
“There is a need to cater for mountain biking enthusiasts and we plan to do just that,” said Denis Ehlers, Chairman of Masters & Ladies Cycling Club. The Club is going off-road with its own mountain biking trail, which will have direct access through the Hopewell nature reserve near Uitenhage. The three thousand hectare Hopewell estate is the most accessible fenced and secure wilderness area for riders based in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. “It provides a safe and eco-friendly environment for the cyclist to get back in touch with nature,” said Ehlers. The estate is one of South Africa’s only nature reserves with a residential component and is situated two kilometres off the Old Cape Road. The reserve is easily accessible for a ride before or after work and at weekends. Members of the Masters and Ladies Cycling Club and their guests will be able to ride along 40 kilometres of existing single track trails, which will shortly be expanded to
90 kilometres of hiking and riding trails, according to developer Brian Corrigan. The trails will take riders through a range of biomes, ranging from different types of grassy fynbos through to valley bushveld in the kloofs and northern section of the property. The topography ranges from open plains to undulating hills and technical sections with more demanding climbs and descents, catering for all ability levels. Following a massive restoration programme, the reserve will offer riders the opportunity to view a range of indigenous game species including eland, kudu, red hartebeest, Cape mountain zebra, mountain reedbuck and springbok. There are also over 130 resident bird species in the area including the martial eagle, African fish eagle, Denham’s bustard and nesting blue cranes. In conjunction with Hopewell Conservation, the club plans a number of cycling events through the reserve next year. A club social ride is scheduled for December 17th.

Steak braai at baseball club Pirates Baseball and Softball Club revived the club at Lower Market Street and currently has two teams playing in the baseball league and one team playing in the women’s softball league. According to club chairman, Marius Lourens, Pirates used to be the force in EP Baseball during the 80s and 90s. “We have decided to re-open it and are currently busy rebuilding the field and facilities. Cricket forum outreach clinic The Chevrolet Uitenhage/Despatch Cricket Coaches Forum, as part of their outreach program hosted a coaching clinic for young budding U/11 and U/13 players. The players were from the newly established Transnet Rail Engineering/Etolofeyeni Cricket Association and the clinic was hosted at the KwaNobuhle multi-purpose sport centre. The UD cricket coaches forum in conjunction with coaches from the Transnet Rail Engineering/ Etolofeyeni Cricket Association took the keen, enthusiastic and eager participants, which included girl players, through various drills and games to improve their cricketing skills. Motorists’ love affairs with cars
outh African motorists shower their vehicles with just as much affection as they do a close friend or family member – maybe even a touch more according to a just-released survey conducted by leading fuels brand, BP Ultimate. The national survey which set out to explore just how passionate South Africans are about their cars drew close to 1 000 responses from male and female drivers across the country. Over two thirds of SA drivers who participated in the BP Ultimate survey admitted to openly expressing their love and affection for
their cars, with 59% saying they feel a true connection with their cars – equating to a staggering 4.8 million smitten South African motorists. More than half (57%) of drivers said they often offer verbal encouragement, compliments or rub the dashboard or steering wheel to get their car to perform i.e. start up, speed up, not stall etc. Giving cars pet names is another shared phenomenon among South African motorists – in fact 47% admitted to this fetish. Twenty three percent have been named after a car and 21% religiously celebrate their cars’ birthdays.

Chance to be part of 3 000km rally 150 Cars, 5 days, 3 000km, one big adventure! A couple of super car or classic car rallies are currently run in South Africa, but these rallies are exclusive and expensive. The Gumboot Rally offers the same thrills and exclusive experience at a more affordable fee and is open to the general public with normal cars to partake in. This will be a rally aimed at having fun while exploring our beautiful country and is not a race! It is an annual event and every year a different route will be taken to complete the rally. The 2013 route will cross the Eastern Province between 2 and 4 April. Anyone with a legal road vehicle can enter, although some entries will be super cars and
classic cars in order to maintain some form of show and spectacle. A maximum of 150 entries will be allowed and entries will be divided into 4 categories: Super/Hyper/Sports Cars in supercar class; Classic Cars (older than 40years); Everyday Vehicles for general public and Motorcycles. A route of approximately 3 000km will be covered over a 5 day period. It is an endurance event, but with a strong emphasis on safety and responsible driving.
