Wildsfees: kuns kry ‘lewe’ D
ie jaarlikse SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees, wat hierdie naweek plaasvind is wild van pret, maar die skone kunste kom ook in die kollig. ’n Nuutjie by vanjaar se fees is plaaslike kunstenaar Hilde Alet Malan, wat by die ATKV sitrusstasie in aksie sal wees. Buiten om te skilder, is sy ook die produksiebestuurder van die plaas Stuck van Acht naby Patensie. “My kuns is eiesoortig, ek het my eie tegniek wat steeds elke dag ontwikkel. Dit is iets baie persoonlik wat emosies en gevoelens vasvang,” sê Hilde wie se kuns sedert 2015 gesogte items vir vele kunsliefhebbers geword het. Sy gebruik verskillende mediums vir haar teken- en verfwerke. “Vir my gaan die twee hand aan hand omdat mens met lyn en beweging in beide vorms werk. Kuns maak dit vir my moontlik om myself te verloor en op dieselfde tyd ook te vind,” sê Hilde.
Sy toer graag en vind inspirasie oral waar sy gaan. Dit is ook vir haar lekker om iets vir iemand te maak wat by hulle styl of idees pas, maar steeds uitstaan as ’n Hilde Alet Malan kunswerk. Sy is op die bestuur van ATKV Patensie en sal hierdie naweek by die ATKV se sitrusstasie by die Wildsfees in aksie te sien wees. Besoekers aan dié stalletjie kan kyk hoe Hilde se tekeninge onder haar skeppende hande vorm en lewe kry. By dié stalletjie is daar verskillende sitrusvariëteite en besoekers kan proe hoekom die vallei bekend is vir sy sitrus. Daar is ook ander interessanthede sowel as lekker doendinge en kosdemonstrasies op Vrydag 15:00, Saterdag 11:00 en 15:00 en Sondag 11:00. Verder kan besoekers uiting gee aan hulle kreatiewe kant op ’n graffitimuur, ’n foto neem saam met die sitrusmannetjies, hoor watter Afrikaanse idioom as die beste bekroon word of sommer net lui-lekker ontspan met ’n sitrusdrinkdingetjie op die sofa.
Kuns maak dit vir my moontlik om myself te verloor en op dieselfde tyd ook te vind. HILDE ALET MALAN

SASSA: do not panic about card expiry date The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) continues to receive queries about the expiry date of its payment cards and the implications thereof from beneficiaries of social grants. The expiry date reflected on the current SASSA card is December this year. SASSA said in a recent media statement that it wishes to put it on record that no beneficiary of social grants will be affected by this expiry date.
According to the media statement, SASSA is in a planning phase regarding the future payment of social grants once the contract with the current service provider, Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), comes to an end in March next year. As soon as final plans are in place, beneficiaries will be informed about the updating process later on in the year. The statement reads, “SASSA remains committed to providing uninterrupted ser-
vice to beneficiaries of social grants in moving South Africa forward. “All social grant recipients are warned not to heed the call by anyone to change their cards.” The SASSA card bearing the colours of the South African flag remains the official card and cannot be changed for any other card. Beneficiaries should be aware of hoax information being circulated, which requires

espatch se avontuurlustige Janecke Schuin (10) wie se regterbeen 10 maande gelede geamputeer is, het Sondag in yskoue weersomstandighede die 1853 voet hoë Lady Slipper-berg uitgeklim om fondse in te samel vir ’n mede-amputéé. Vir haar selfopgelegde uitdaging om dié berg met haar prostese aan te durf, het sy die publiek se ondersteuning nodig gehad om donasies van R5 te maak by 19 kollekteerblikkies wat by besighede op Despatch geplaas is. “Dit was ‘n baie emosionele dag vir ons klomp grootmense wat saam met Janecke geklim het. Dit was moeilik. Asma-pompies is sommer al vroeg uit die kouse gehaal, maar dit was uit-en-uit die moeite werd,” sê Vicki Schuin, Janecke se ma. “Die hoogtepunt was toe ons op ons moegste was en op die bergpiek ‘n pikswart gebrande R5 opgetel het. Dit was soos ‘n teken dat ons poging om Jackie Steyn te help ‘n sukses sal wees.” Avontuur om vir altyd te onthou Steyn se been is ook geamputeer en hy benodig dringend ’n prostese. Daarom het Janecke besluit om dié man van Jeffreysbaai te help om fondse in te samel vir ’n prostese. Verskeie mense het Janecke op haar ekspedisie vergesel. Yolandi en Gert van Tonder was die voorklimmers wat haar help klim het en gesorg het dat sy veilig is. Janecke se oupa, Kappie van Zyl (61) het vooruit geklim en fotos geneem. Twee ambulansmanne van Garmed, Barry Supra en Vincent Upton, het op die ingewing van die oomblik besluit om ook saam te klim. “Sonder die twee ambulansmanne sou ons Despatch Days se admin vroue (Almarie Frier en Yolanda Brown) op die berg agtergebly het,” spot Vicki. Vicky sê die 4 ure op die berg was ‘n avontuur wat hulle vir altyd sal onthou.

Janecke, ’n graad 5 leerder aan Laerskool Sonop op Despatch, sê dankie aan almal wat haar ondersteun het en ‘n donasie gemaak het vir Jackie Steyn. ie 78-jarige Neville Valentine van Uitenhage het tragies gesterf nadat sy huis in Van Riebeekhoogte gebrand het.
Sy seun, Eugene Valentine en sy gesin het saam met hom in die huis in Amandastraat gewoon. Hul het hul pa en oupa verloor en ook aardse besittings, maar wat hulle bybly van dié traumatiese gebeure is die ooparmwelwillendheid van bure, vreemdelinge en die organisasie For the Love of The Bay 2. “Ons wil nie dramatiseer nie. Die brand is vermoedelik deur ’n elektroniese fout veroorsaak. “Die bure het gehelp om die brand te probeer blus en om my pa uit te kry. Gelukkig was die brandweer baie vinnig hier. Voor die oorledene se aftrede was hy by die onderwysdepartement werksaam. Kaptein Gerda Swart, woordvoerder van die Uitenhage polisie, het bevestig dat ’n 78-jarige man in die brand gesterf het. Valentine is verlede Vrydag ter ruste gelê.

Owing to the drought, warthogs are a familiar sight grazing in the green grass next to the tarred road. Kudu easily jump fences and criss-cross roads, especially during this time of the year as it is hunting season. Fernandes van Zyl, Bridgestone Sales Specialist has the following tips for road users in areas with wild antelope: .While warthog and kudu cross the road in broad daylight, motorists should note that antelope are especially skittish at night, owing to the blinding headlights. Therefore try not to use the bright lights as kudus normally follow the light. .Do not exceed the speed limit and rather drive at a safe speed that you know you will be able to handle the vehicle in case a kudu or warthog crosses the road. .Know your vehicle, its handling and braking abilities. When it is needed to break, keep your steering wheel straight to avoid a collision with oncoming traffic. .When you see kudu next to the road, keep driving at a steady pace and keep your

But there is no proven guarantee that these gimmicks are effective. .Be observant of the environment you drive through. Remember kudus are gregarious and the herds they form are usually about four animals, although they may number up to twelve. So if you see one, there might be more. .Always wear your safety belt and keep a safe following distance. .Drive responsibly and enjoy the ride.

rience. Tentmakers of Cairo For the first time ever in South Africa two men will be representing the world-renowned Tentmakers of Cairo, Egypt, on the teaching panel. They will pass on a time-honoured tradition that has been passed from father to son over generations. Their magnificent appliqué quilts will also be on display in their own exhibition. Adding to the excitement, the Keiskamma Project and 67 Blankets for Mandela will also feature at the event. Open times from July 3 to 7 are from 09:00-18:00 and from 09:00 to 15:00 on July 8. Entry is R50 per adult, R20 for learners and free to children under the age of 12.

Louis has been in the vehicles sales business for the past 20 years. Some of these years he had previously spend in Uitenhage as a senior new and pre owned vehicle sales consultant at Maritime Motors when they had a dealership in town. He then moved with Maritime Motors to Port Elizabeth where he became the Pre-owned Vehicle Sales Manager taking the pre-owned department to one of the top pre-owned departments in SA. He then moved to an independent used car dealership where he managed the internet vehicle sales. he Scott family from Uitenhage and their descendants have been known as keen squash contenders, loving the game and living for the sport.

They last and are for good. When I walk onto the court it is to enjoy the game and obviously to win. It is a place where you are your own boss,” said Kathy. Her son, and the youngest of the Scott descendants who plays squash, Keegan Hoy (13), was selected for the EP U.14B team and with this marks the fourth generation of squash players. He will on Saturday jet off to Johannesburg to participate in the U/14 national squash championships. “I enjoy squash because it is nice to meet the different people. I have very good friends that I’ve met on the squash court,” said Keegan.
There is a squash saying ... “There are two kinds of people in the world and being a squash player is better than both of them,” and with these words Mike Scott thoroughly agrees. “Oh, I love squash! It is the nicest sport in the world. Weather is not a factor and you don’t have to be good to enjoy it,” said Mike, owner of Brocketts Sports, one of the oldest private businesses in Uitenhage. “The most important thing about squash is your friends. You want to kill each other on the court but off the court they will die for you.
