Fun and laughter with Rotarians HEILIE COMBRINCK The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South are presenting an evening of fun, song and top quality acting on Friday, 7th and Saturday, 8th October at Riebeek College school hall. All proceeds will be going towards services in the community. Three old age homes in Uitenhage are amongst the beneficiaries and a portion will also go towards eradicating polio out of Africa. The Rotary Club will present a modern day version of Cinderella in four acts. In addition to this there will be “imported” dancing girls, cabaret of high quality sing-along and a front of curtain act or two. All Rotarians and their wives will be making fools of themselves in one way or another, all in the cause of funding some local organisations. A cash bar will be provided. The community is kindly requested to please not miss out on this event as it is towards a worthy cause. Ward committee elections
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Ward Committee elections will be held in all sixty (60) Wards from 10 to 12 October 2011, in order to establish non-political Ward Committees in each Ward. A Ward Committee will comprise no more than ten members, made up of representatives from different sectors and voter districts within each Ward. The Councillor representing that Ward in Council, will also serve as the Chairperson of the Committee. Furthermore, a diversity of interests in the Ward must be represented, such as the following interest groups: youth, women, religious groups, sports and culture, health and welfare, business, the environment, senior citizens, community safety forums, community-based

President Zuma visited U’hage as part of his monitoring campaign
President Jacob Zuma undertook a two-day working visit to the Eastern Cape to monitor job creation and local government performance in Nelson Mandela Bay and Mthatha respectively. The President’s visit is part of the monitoring and evaluation of government performance. This is in keeping with his commitment to hands-on performance monitoring and evaluation as one of the key defining features of the current administration. In Nelson Mandela Bay, the President yesterday assessed the performance of the automotive sector, in line with the declaration of the year 2011 as the year of job creation and economic transformation. The visit underscores the support of the sector by government and will enable the President to gain a first-hand account of the successes and challenges from the manufacturers, to enable government to provide the needed support. There are four car manufacturers in the Eastern Cape namely Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA), General Motors South Africa (GMSA), and Ford Motor Corporation which are all in Nelson Mandela Bay, and Mercedes Benz SA (MBSA) in East London. In 2009, VWSA accounted for 52.8 % of the total employment in the auto industry,

MBSA manufactures about 50 000 units per annum of its C-Class model for the local market and for global export. The President met industry Chief Executive Officers and representatives of the National Automobile Manufacturers’ Association of South Africa (NAAMSA) as well as those of the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM), both of which represent the biggest players in the auto industry. The meeting took place at the Coega Industrial Zone which the President visited for the first time. After the interaction with industry leaders, the President toured the plants of General Motors, Ford and Volkswagen in Nelson Mandela Bay. He will be in Mthatha today, as part of the second leg of the visit, to assess the work of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) that he established to assist in revitalising the King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality. The President will take his monitoring campaign to the Free State on the 4th October to assess the state of rural development.

Remain wary of phishing attacks Trends indicate that phishing fraud tends to escalate towards the latter part of the year and Absa has urged its customers to remain informed and become increasingly vigilant so that they do not become victims of attempted phishing attacks. “Bank customers should educate themselves about the modus operandi of fraudsters and adopt safe online banking practices in order to avoid falling prey to phishing scams,” says Gavin Opperman, CE of Absa Retail Bank. “Phishing is done via SMS, email
or telephone and aims to get hold of your personal and banking details in order to fraudulently withdraw money from your account. Never divulge your banking details to anyone via any of these channels. Also, the golden rule to be remembered is that Absa will never send you an email requesting that you click on a link or attachment to upgrade your service or to confirm your logon details,” emphasises Opperman. “Absa continually upgrades its security measures and monitors the latest online fraud tactics. Jong sangeres in PJ Powers se voetspore HEILIE COMBRINCK ‘n Jong sangsensasie van Despatch word al gewilder met haar besondere aanvoeling om bekende Xhosa en Zoeloe liedjies te sing. Haar weergawe van Vulindlela het bygedra dat daar deesdae na Ilana van Vuuren verwys word as die “wit Brenda Fassie”. Ilana sing in vier tale, maar haar stem word by uitstek gekomplimenteer deur die wyse waarop sy Afrika-ritmes vertolk. “Ek het ‘n instinktiewe aanvoeling vir Afrika ritmes. Die klanke van Afrika tale is deel van my want ek het in Transkei grootgeword. Op vierjarige ouderdom wou ek al verhoog toe, maar dit was eers toe ek 14 jaar oud was dat ek ernstig begin sing het,” vertel die 17-jarige Ilana.
Haar ikoon in die musiekbedryf is PJ Powers en dit is een van Ilana se ideale om saam met hierdie merkwaardige Suid-Afrikaanse sangeres ‘n verhoog te deel. “Ek hou van uitdagings. Hoe moeiliker ‘n liedjie, hoe lekkerder vir my. Moenie vir my sê ‘jy kan nie’ - dan is ek eers gemotiveerd om dit te doen,” het Ilana gesê. Alhoewel haar sangloopbaan relatief onlangs begin het, was Ilana bevoorreg om reeds ‘n hele paar hoë profiel optredes te geniet. Sy het tydens ‘n spesiale geleentheid ter viering van Madiba se 92ste verjaardag opgetree en die verhoog met Lulu en Zonke gedeel. Sy het ook by die onlangse Northern Arts Festival opgetree en sal later vanjaar as gaskunstenaar saam met Children in Christ te sien wees. Tydens die opening van die
ATKV Maranatha se Vier Seisoene Tuisteater vroeër vanjaar, was Ilana die gaskunstenaar. Haar ma, Leonie, tree tans as haar bestuurder op en is ook een van haar grootste kritikiste. “Ek sê altyd vir haar, jy is so goed soos jou laaste optrede. ‘n Goeie optrede is baie meer werd as betaling,” het Leonie gesê. Ilana het haar eie liefdadigheidsorganisasie, Ububele Productions, begin met die doel om uit te reik na mense in nood. Ilana kom uit ‘n kunssinnige familie en beide haar ouers Leon en Leonie van Vuuren sowel as haar ouer suster, Eide-Maré het ‘n sterk aanvoeling vir kuns, hetsy vir die skeppende kuns of verhoogoptredes. Ilana is tans in graad 11 aan Hoërskool Despatch.

“Elke jaar sedert ons eerste kunsuitstalling in 2004 het ons ‘n gemeenskapsprojek geïdentifiseer wat voordeel geniet uit die opbrengs van die uitstalling. “Vanjaar het ons besluit om Bergsig Sterre te ondersteun en spesifiek met die doel om die visuele kuns van die projek te help ontwikkel,” het Llize Dodd gesê.
Die kunsuitstalling word op 27 Oktober vanaf 09:00-18:00 gehou en plaaslike kunstenaars wat hulle werke wil uitstal is welkom. Handhaaf ondersteun bloedskenk Laerskool Handhaaf het gedurende Augustus vir die 5de jaar in ‘n ry aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens se ‘Adopt-a-Month’ bloedskenk-projek deelgeneem. Die uitdaging aan leerders was om ten minste 50 persone aan te moedig om bloed te skenk. Die minimum ouderdom om bloed te kan skenk is 16 en daarom moes leerders staatmaak op ouers, oumas, oupas, ouer broers of susters en selfs vriende. Die mikpunt van 50 eenhede bloed is bereik met 56 mense wat uiteindelik bloed geskenk het. Graad 3B onder leiding van me. Mariet Hanekom was aangewys as die wenklas met 19% deelname en 12 bloedskenkings. Reuben Kleinhans, ook in graad 3B, is aangewys as die leerling wat die meeste bloedskenkers gewerf het (6 skenkers). Ander interessante resultate is dat 13% van die bloedskenkers vir hierdie projek eerste maal skenkers was en nog 13% skenkers het langer as ‘n jaar gelede bloed geskenk, met 75% gereëlde bloedskenkers. New bike to win at Dolphin Rally Proceeds from the Dolphin Rally, a popular annual motorcycle gathering that will take place on 30 September, 1 and 2 October at the Beachview Resort, will boost an aid fund of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. This will enable the institution to assist deserving members of the community during extraordinary circumstances of need. Mr Gona Puckreesamy, President of the Dolphins Motorcycle Club, said they agreed to the handing over of the proceeds of the event, that came close to a few hundred thousand rand in the past, to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to ensure that the disadvantaged can be assist-

Asa leader in environmental excellence Goodyear has put its money where its mouth is by launching the first community environmental project of its kind in the Eastern Cape in partnership with The Waste Trade Company and Die Burger. This initiative, dubbed Project Groenspoor (green track), was launched at the Albertyn Primary School in Uitenhage - the home of
Goodyear’s only tyre manufacturing plant in Africa. “The goal of Project Groenspoor is to educate the community via schools regarding the value of recycling and the important contribution each individual can make towards a healthier environment. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the waste going to landfill. Our short term goal is to reduce it by 200 tons via schools in the
metropole during the next 18 months,” says Lize Hayward Goodyear Group Public Relations Manager. The project will be characterised by three different phases of three months each during the first year. The first phase entails a competition among schools. The school that generates the most waste will walk away with a floating trophy, cash prize and a set of
locally produced Goodyear passenger- or 4x4 tyres. Ten deserving learners across various schools will be dubbed Groenspoor Stars and will be rewarded with certificates and different prizes. The second phase entails making the best pieces of art from recyclable material. The last phase includes an essay and colouringin competition among schools.

This is the message from the women of the Sundays River Women’s Institute who on an annual basis transform the Valentine Hall into something spectacular with decorations
consisting of thousands of roses at the Addo Rose & Garden Show. This year’s show will be from the 7th to the 9th October, with the preview themed “Sundowners and Roses” on the 7th at 18:30. This established country festival also presents talks and demonstrations on roses and gardens, food, beer tent, stalls and musical entertainment. Unique to the Addo Rose & Garden Show is the speciment tent where a minimum of 100 rose specimens will be displayed and labelled for the serious rose lover. The 2011 Addo Rose & Garden Show is dedicated to all the rose lovers, past and present, who have put heart and soul into the show over the years. All profits of the show is towards meeting the ever-increasing need to alleviate the ravages and rural poverty. Uitenhage police squeezing crime Uitenhage police are wasting no time in squeezing the space of criminals. The past weekend they arrested criminals within an hour after committing the alleged crimes. According to police spokesperson, Lt. Col. Priscilla Naidu, three teenagers (the youngest is 13 years old) were arrested during the early hours of Saturday morning. “At about 02:00 the youngsters were stopped by police and found to be in possession of property suspected to be stolen. The suspects were arrested before the owner of the vehicle
realized that his vehicle was broken into,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. A Sony MP3 player as well as a wallet and credit cards was found in the teenagers possession. The boys were linked to the break-in of a vehicle which was parked outside a bar in Graaff Reinet Road. The car’s terminal was also removed. Police found the boys about 3km from the crime scene. “Two of the teenagers have previous cases pending against them,” said Lt. Col. Naidu. In another incident during the ear-

ly hours of Saturday morning, seven suspects were detained when police stopped their vehicle. “Members of the night shift stopped a car in Melbrooks Avenue and found a vehicle battery and four alloy wheels fitted with tyres. Soekoe sends out a stern warning to criminals: “We will not tolerate their criminal movements in our area and we have our eyes everywhere”.

U’hage Community Choir reunion gospel concert
Uitenhage Community Choir will have its reunion gospel concert on Saturday at the Allanridge Civic Centre. Uitenhage Community Choir (UCC), the once popular choir in the Eastern Cape, will have its re-union gospel concert on Saturday 1st October in the Allanridge Civic Centre. Mr. Colin Agulhas, the marketing manager of the choir, said the concert will be a night to remember for all gospel show lovers. “Only the best in gospel songs and music will be present-
ed.” The UCC was established in the year 1991, when a group of young talented men went in search of young singers and musicians in and around Uitenhage. Mr. Fiedaai (Boy) Jagger who is well known for the song Daddy my Daddy, led the choir at that time. People who also played a role in the search and grooming of

He performed with artists such as Jimmy Dludu, Freshly Ground and Shakira and toured the world. He started his musical training as a member of the UCC. Leon Jafta from GraaffReinet is one of South Africa’s top bassists who will indulge the audience that night. He performed with artists such as Patrick Duncan and Julius Schults. Peter Michaels (Mr Fingers) from Cape Town one of the top keyboard/ organ musicians, who also performed with well known national and international artists, will be on one of the keyboards. Percy January, a well known ‘church boy’ in Uitenhage, highly admired for his dedication to choirs and upcoming bands is also featuring. Merlin (Mr, Sticks or Mokes) Michaels, whose name says it all, will be the drummer. Gamanie Clinton from Cape Town, who played the lead guitar for Bianca le Grange and currently for Black Current will shred the guitar. Because of the high interest in the concert, Agulhas advises the patrons to arrive early that evening. The doors will open at 18:00 and the show starts at 19:00 sharp. Refreshments will be on sale and lucky draws will also take place. The big prize is a weekend away for two at The Pond, a 4 star hotel in Port Alfred, sponsored by Mr. A Taai. The show will also be recorded live on DVD which will be on sale at a later stage. Louis de Swart Chartered Accountants Louis de Swardt started his first practice as chartered accountant in 1978 in Standerton and thirty years later on 1 February 2008 he started his present practice in Uitenhage. Information needed about accident The Depatch police are in need of information regarding a hit-and-run accident in which an unknown pedestrian was knocked over by a Green Ford Ka on the R75 between Despatch and Uitenhage. According to police spokesperson, W.O. Mari-
anette Olivier, the accident occurred on the 16th September at about 07:45 “The pedestrian was taken to the Livingstone Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. A case of culpable homicide was opened,” said W.O. Olivier. Despatch police are look-
ing for the family of the deceased. He was between 30 and 40 years of age and an African Rasta. Anyone who can assist with the identification of the deceased is urged to contact investigating officer, Constable Mawthu Kwetana at 084 636 8834.

VW Logo Day well supported Volkswagen fans from all over the Eastern Cape headed to Despatch on Heritage Day to celebrate the rich history of the VW Beetle and Kombi. The highlight of this “VW Logo Day” was the formation of the well-known VW roundel by parking cars in a huge circle and forming the VW badge. Organiser of the event, Hennie du Toit said more than 120 VWs of all sizes participated in the formation of the roundel and aerial photos were taken by Bob Binnell who flew over the event in a light aircraft. “We want to thank John Lemon for the assistance in forming the roundel as well as Herman Elzerman for his valuable input in keeping the VW aircooled fans informed. Thank
you also to the local traffic department for their patience and assistance in escorting the VW parade through town. We also appreciate the presence of the well-known and popular VW AutoPavilion heritage centre at the event. “A big thank you also to all who assisted, especially my father, Gawie du Toit, from whom I inherited my passion for VWs,” said Du Toit. VW fans travelled from as far as East London, George, Graaff Reinet and Cradock to make this day a memorable one. “The Beetle and all its ‘siblings’ are and always will be part of the heritage of Uitenhage and Despatch. So, next year, God willing, on Heritage Day we will do it again!” said Du Toit.

Workshop to better your speed A workshop to learn the most recent trends in the development of speed, conditioning and recovery will be conducted by two international athletics coaches at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The two international presenters, Ralph Mouchbahani from Germany and Andy Miller from the USA, are well known in world sport circles. Speed is a universal component of all sport events. As the
presentations will focus on all sport codes and events, it is advised to send representatives to this workshop. Knowledge gained will be of great value to coaches, athletes, physiotherapists, chiropractors and bio-kineticists. It will be presented at NMMU athletics track on 7th October 08:30-19:30. Scholars run for cancer
Free athletics training camp
EP Athletics, supported by the Lotto and Absa NMMU Athletics Club, will present a training camp for road runners (athletes and coaches). It will be presented by the well-known Shadrack Hoff on the 30th September and 1st October at Westbourne Oval. Shadrack will share his knowledge of how to train for 10km, half-marathon and marathon and also inform athletes on diets, supplements and how to plan a race.

The scholars, who are all cross country athletes, wanted to make other scholars aware of cancer and wanted to show how they are “in spirit” supporting victims of cancer. Despatch Spar showed their support for the cross country team consisting of Ruaan, Karla, Alicia, Bianca and Koeka and sponsored them with eats and drinks for their four day trip.
