Die boerboelskou word op die dorp se sentrale sportvelde aangebied in samewerking met die Despatch Rotariërklub en Afgri Veevoere. “Ons sou aanvanklik ‘n Boeresportdag gehou het maar weens logistieke haakplekke is dit uitgeskuif na 2 November. Ander akwititeite gaan voort soos beplan en ons ondersteun die Boerboelskou voluit,” het Rynhardt Fourie, president van die Despatch Rotariërklub gesê. Sowat 80 prag Boerboele word ver-

geaardheid en word uitgevoer na alle uithoeke op die aardbol. Volgens die onderwyser in beheer van die noodhulp by die skool, Evan van der Merwe, het hulle reeds die nodige toerusting, maar nuwe verbande, pleisters en algemene me-

disinale produkte word voortdurend benodig soos dit opgebruik word. “‘n Nuwe volledige noodhulp-kassie sal wonderlik wees. Ons het reeds bloeddruk-apparate en ’n paar ander noodhulpitems. “Ons sal graag ‘n borg wou kry vir t-hempies wat die noodhulp-span kan dra tydens sportwedstryde, sodat hulle maklik raakgesien kan word,” het Van der Merwe gesê. Van der Merwe gaan binnekort sy vlak 3 noodhulp-opleiding voltooi. Drie ander onderwysers by die skool, mnr. Griesel, mnr. Boshoff en mej. Lötter het saam met die leerders die vlak1 kursus voltooi. Die leerders van die noodhulpspan bestaan uit Jenny Serfontein, Heinrich Willemse, Chanté-Lee Barnard, Danielle du Plessis en Ruben Verster. Buiten dat dié noodhulpspan op ‘n daaglikse basis by die skool op gereedheidsvlak is, kry hulle ook die geleentheid om tydens sportgeleenthede op te tree as noodhulp beamptes.

Economist Dawie Roodt says ‘size counts’ “S

Waterpyp nie ‘onskadelik’ Een sessie met ’n waterpyp (hookah) is gelyk aan die rook van 100 sigarette. Dié pype is volgens die Kankervereniging van Suid-Afrika (Kansa) al hoe gewilder onder jong mense en selfs nie-rokers. Sue Janse van Rensburg, uitvoerende hoof van Kansa, het voor die internasionale Geen Tabak-dag op 31 Mei gesê daar is talle wanopvattings oor waterpype wat deesdae hoogmode is. Een is dat die water die tabak suiwer – wat nie waar is nie. Die mondstuk kan ook koorsblare en tuberkulose tussen mense versprei.

“Baie mense glo dié pype is beter as om sigarette te rook; die teendeel is waar.” Dit neem tussen vyf en sewe minute om ’n sigaret te rook en ’n mens neem sowat agt tot twaalf trekke. Dit stel die longe bloot aan 40 ml tot 75 ml rook. ’n Sessie met ’n waterpyp, wat aangesteek word deur ’n stuk houtskool, duur tussen 20 en 80 minute. ’n Mens kan in dié tyd tussen 50 en 200 trekke neem. Volgens Kansa is dit gelyk aan 100 of meer sigarette in een sodanige sitting, en die longe kry tot een liter rook in.

Volgens Kansa dink mense ook hulle kry met die waterpyp minder nikotien in. Omdat die waterpyp-rokers soveel meer rook inneem, kan hulle selfs meer nikotien inneem as met ’n sigaret. “Dit kan 36 keer meer teer bevat en 8 keer meer koolstofmonoksied as ’n sigaret,” het Van Rensburg gesê. Die tabak is meestal gegeur en het ’n soet reuk, wat dit aanloklik vir jonger mense maak en makliker om in te asem. (Elsabé Brits)

Bollie Bewaarskool is een van Uitenhage se oudste bewaarskole en is in 1973 deur René Botha begin. Een van die eerste leerders, Wilna Swanepoel, is vandag deel van die span se opgeleide personeellede wat toesien na voldag versorging van babas (vanaf 3 maande) en kleuters (tot 5 jaar) onder een dak. Elmien Wood is aan die bestuurder van die bewaarskool en sê hulle streef daarna om gesonde dissipline te kweek wat orde sal verseker vir goedaangepaste kleuters met selfvertroue.

Om 09:00 begin ’n pretloop, basaar en teetuin en om 10:00 is dit tyd vir ’n babakompetisie. Die potjiekoskompetisie begin reeds om 06:00 en duur heeldag. Die publiek sal van die potjieskos kan koop sodra dit klaar voorberei is. Marina Seesout-geskenkpakke sowel as geskenkpakke met komplimente van Doves sal aan deelnemers gegee word. Other problems include a burst pipe in the kitchen and poor security, resulting in her vehicle being broken into on six occasions thus far. The reader feels that the problems she has suffered more than justify her wanting and being entitled to leave. Despite complaining to the landlord, nothing has been repaired and towards the end of last year he advised her that she could leave if she wanted to, provided she could find alternative accommodation. The tenants in the main dwelling were told the same thing, as the landlord’s son apparently intended to take occupation of the entire property. Taking him at his word, the reader sourced a new place to stay and gave the landlord a week’s notice. The landlord refused to release her, stating that she had misunderstood him and that she was still obliged to give one month’s notice or forfeit her deposit, which would presumably be set off against payment for the notice month’s rental. Without seeing the written lease that was concluded between the landlord and tenant, it is difficult to advise on a specific remedy, says Stiaan Jonker of Smith Tabata Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Disregarding, for the time being, the reader’s complaints about the condition of the property, and focusing on the aspect relating to cancellation of the lease, I’m not convinced that the problems experienced result in her being able to leave on a whim.” The reader advised the landlord of the problems with the rented flat yet, despite nothing being done, she continued to stay there for ten months, says Jonker. “The lease agreement would provide us with some insight into this matter and would typically state the rental period or provide for termination on, usually, a month’s notice.” Should there be no written lease, Jonker says the period is usually determined on a month-to-month basis with one calendar month’s notice. Of course, the parties can agree to different terms and whether such an agreement occurred is the crux of the current matter, says Susan Chapman from Rawson Properties PE Platinum in the metro. “Because the reader gave a week’s notice, it still seems to have been a requirement in her mind. However, the period thereof appears to be in dispute.” Chapman says the reader did not advise the panel of any special agreement in this regard, therefore it would seem that the usual one-month notice period would apply. “However, the lease period itself, which is typically agreed to at the outset and recorded in the agreement, would be abbreviated.” The early termination and notice period would have to be agreed upon by both parties, says Chapman. “Notice should be reasonable in the circumstances and one month would allow the landlord to make alternative arrangements.” To ask a property related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.

Go wild at Addo’s golf day The SANPark’s Honorary Rangers at Addo Elephant National Park are organising their 8th annual golf day on Friday, 7 June at Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth. Volgens Coen Beek van die JBKKK, word die skou opgedra aan hul oudste lid, Keith Marsh, wat onlangs sy 80ste verjaarsdag gevier het. Klubs van regoor die Kouga, Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage en Despatch gaan hul blinkste en oudste motors kom uitstal. Klubs teenwoordig sluit in, JBKKK, Morris, Triumph, EPVCC, Hot Rods en MG. Een van die motors wat by die skou te sien sal wees, is ’n 1948 Fiat 500 Topolino, wie se eienaar slegs 14 jaar oud is. Manie Thiart

het dié motor saam met sy oupa Manie Venter gerestoureer. “Manie en sy Oupa het gehoor van ’n rooi Fiat 500 Topolino 1948 wat in Knysna te koop was. Toe hulle die motor gaan haal, het hulle nog drie soortgelyke onvolledige karre gesien, wat hulle toe ook gekoop het vir onderdele. Nadat die benodigde onderdele verwyder is, het hulle die drie ‘skenkers’ toe weer verkoop,” vertel van Beek. Die Fiat het ’n 500cc motor in wat hulle uitgehaal en self oorgedoen het, en die motor spog nou ook met ’n nuwe laag blou verf. Skougangers kan ook uitsien na a rare “barn find” ’n 1958 Triumph Davdon, wat vir die eerste keer ten toon gestel gaan word. Die toegang is gratis en almal is baie welkom om saam te braai. Onthou om jou stoel en ‘n stukkie vleis saam te bring. Braaivleisvure sal op sewe plekke voorsien word en ons borge het sewe splinternuwe roosters geskenk wat hier gebruik sal kan word.
