I
n what will most probably be a first ever across the globe, a 2017 Range Rover Sport with its supercharged V8 engine will challenge a Sukhoi Su-31 aerobatic aircraft, during this weekend’s Wings and Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show.
“It’s going to be an awesome challenge. Nobody ever has seen this car against plane challenge anywhere in the world. We are proud to host it here at the Uitenhage Airfield!” said Lourens Kruger from the Wings and Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show. South African racing champion Mike Briggs will be behind the steering wheel of the Range Rover whilst Patrick Davidson will fly his single-engined Sukhoi Su-31, a Russian aerobatic aircraft, which has the capability of literally hanging 90 degrees on its propeller in the sky. Davidson last year won the classic combination at the Durban hosted Sky Grand Prix FAI Special Aerobatic International Event. The Uitenhage Airfield event is named after Patrick’s grandfather, the late Doug Davidson, a legendary pilot and businessman who passed away at this airfield in his later years. There will also be a challenge between a vintage aeroplane and a vintage car. The 4x4 Extreme event will also be a firstof-its-kind in the Eastern Cape as it is hosted at the most extreme 4x4 track in the province. (Also see p. 16)

Blow to Blewett’s longest standing record
B
rian Blewett’s longest standing swimming record of 35 years at Uitenhage Convent Primary has been bettered!
The honour of this history made went to Shaydon Jacobs who set a new record for boys’ butterfly open after bettering Blewett’s record by 00:00:09 seconds. Blewett has set several swimming records at Uitenhage Convent Primary, which over the years were bettered, one after another. Wenda Marsh (80) a former secretary at the school, remembers Brian well, as through all the years she assisted with the coaching of swimmers as well as recordings at gala events. As usual, she was present as a recorder, during the gala where Blewett’s longest standing record was rewritten. “He was a brilliant swimmer and had several records for various strokes that had been broken over the years. But nobody managed to beat him at butterfly. He takes after his father (late) Michael Blewett and swimming definitely runs in their family,” said Marsh. Blewett joked and said “I am not a swimmer anymore, but a sinker.” One of my sons, Jordan Blewett, also is a keen swimmer and was included in the SA U/16 water polo team. Convent Primary is known for delivering swimmers of note like Taylin Sauls who during 2011 broke one of Blewett’s records which at that stage stood for 20 years and Akeem Langford bettered one of Blewett’s records during 2014. Also hailing from Convent Primary are South African swimmers and twin brothers Alard and Alaric Basson, currently at NMMU and training for the next Olympics.

T
he Swartkops River surely is one of the most polluted rivers in Nelson Mandela Bay and some residents living in its catchment area, north of Uitenhage, do not play their part when it comes to illegal dumping. In a joint venture between the Department of Roads and Stormwater which falls under the Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality together together with Waste Management
and a service provider Fine Corp, parts of the river at Nivens Bridge were cleaned up. Experiencing a birds eye view flying over the river, it is evident that the condition of the river dramatically worsens at the Cat Canal inflow close to the Nivens Bridge. Here all kinds of household items as well as refrigerator and washing machine parts can be seen floating in the water. Residents are urged to stop illegal dumping into the Cat Canal. It has a disastrous effect not only on the river and its inhabitants, but also the unique Swartkops estuary and eventually the sea.

SASSA: all on track for social grants The Department of Social Development and SASSA has said in a media statement that all is on track for the payment of social grants from April 1, 2017. “The Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, would like to reassure all qualifying beneficiaries that they will receive their money as per normal,” the statement read. “Considering that April 1, 2017 is a Saturday and for this reason, as on all occasions when the grant payment date falls over a weekend, SASSA pay points will not open. Special focus and provision will be made for the busiest merchants and ATMs around the country and Regional Executive Managers will be deployed to monitor and assist beneficiaries with enquiries.” According to the statement, on April 3, SASSA pay points will operate as normal and recipients are encouraged to go on their respective days and respective pay points as indicated on the slips they re-
ceived last month. Measures in place as of April 1, 2017 ) The SASSA call centre will be opened to assist beneficiaries (0800 60 10 11). ) Senior Officials will be deployed at the call centre. ) Arrangements have been made to ensure that SOCPEN is available for investigation and verification of the status of the grants applications. ) A letter to the National Police Commissioner has been sent out for a request to increase police visibility The Department emphasises that normal business processes will continue. In the statement, the minister reiterated her unreserved apology for the anxiety and fear caused about the uncertainty around the payment of social grants. Aquaponics to provide fresh produce to scholars Two commercial size aquaponics units are being buildt at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University as part of a R37 million Health in Action programme which will provide children from primary schools in low-income communities with access to fresh, nutritious produce. The Mondelez International Foundation (the Foundation), Mondelez South Africa and INMED Partnerships for Children are building the units. Aquaponics is an innovative food production technique that combines aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (soil-less crop production, with the cultivation of plants in water). “Daily consumption of fresh produce is widely acknowledged as key to a well-balanced diet, yet for many in low-income communities, healthy food choices are often out of reach,” said Joost Vlaanderen, Mondelez South Africa’s Managing Director. Health in Action is a four-year primary school-based wellness program funded by the Foundation and implemented by INMED in South Africa.

The aquaponics system at NMMU is approximately 223 square meters in size and will at maximum capacity produce approximately 2 tons of various greens and approximately 1.9 tons of fish annually. While fish will be harvested twice a year, vegetables will be available throughout the year once the system is running. The facility comprises 5 fish tanks filled with tilapia, as well as 9 grow beds planted with a variety of fast-growing crops. Lettuce, spinach, peppers, cucumbers and herbs are among the
nutritious, organic fresh produce that is being grown in the system. The aquaponics plant will also provide research opportunities for agricultural students from NMMU. Unathi Sihlahla, Program Director of INMED South Africa highlighted the importance of adopting sustainable food production practices that conserve natural resources at a time when drought has been threatening the water supply and food security in the Nelson Mandela Bay region. U’hage duiweboer gekroon as SA skoukampioen HEILIE COMBRINCK ’n Duiweboer van Uitenhage is aangewys as die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Posduiforganisasie se 2016 skoukampioen. Dit is die eerste keer in duiwewedvlug-geskiedenis dat iemand van die Oostelike Provinsie hierdie gesogte titel wen. Gert Nell (77) het dié titel nou agter sy naam nadat hy die meeste punte behaal het vir sy duiwe tydens die nasionale skou wat verlede jaar by Humerail aangebied is. Die toekenning is twee weke gelede tydens die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Posduiforganisasie se jaar-
likse kongres wat in die Summerstrand Hotel gehou is, aan Nell oorhandig. “Die kongres was fantasties en is goed ondersteun deur baie duiweboere van regoor die land. “Dit was ook wonderlik dat hulle duiweboere wat 80 jaar en ouer is en steeds deelneem aan die sport, spesiale erkenning gegee het,” sê Nell, wie ook ’n erelid is van die Oostelike Provinsie Posduifvereniging. Nell het 46 van sy duiwe geskou waarvan 6 duiwe as kampioene in hul onderskeie afdelings gewen het. Heelwat van Nell se duiwe was naaswenners met ’n hele paar 3de en 4de plekke.

Nell het vir 9 jaar sy duiwe na streekskoue geneem en dit was die 4de nasionale skou waaraan hy deelgeneem het. By die vorige nasionale skoue het hy twee keer ’n derde plek behaal, ’n vyfde en nou is hy die kampioen. “Die jaar wat ek in Bloemfontein gaan duiwe skou het, was daar 22 miljoenêrs wat ook deelgeneem het. Ek stap met my duiwe in rottangmandjies, hulle het kaste met gordyne en riffelglas en elke duif in sy eie kompartement. “Ek het gedink, wat se kans staan ek! Dit was die jaar wat ons 5de geëindig het en meeste van die miljoenêrs geklop het.”
Nell sê dit is ’n duur sport, maar hy is sy twee borge, Willie de Jager en Willie Steenkamp ewig dankbaar dat hy en sy vrou Orgia Nell nog duiwe kan vlieg en hul passie vir die sport uitleef. Hy het in 1956 met die sport begin en sê dit is een van min sportsoorte waar daar geen ouderdomsbeperking is nie. Nell is ’n lid van die Uitenhage Posduifvereniging ook bekend as UHS (Uitenhage Homing Society). Nog ’n lid van dié vereniging, Gerhard Doubell, het sy SA-kleure tydens die kongres ontvang vir administrasie in die sport.

SAs 1st darts player to win Last Man Standing HEILIE COMBRINCK The man with a heart for darts and who played a major role in reviving this sport in the Northern Areas, is the first ever South African to win a Last Man Standing Darts Tournament. This man is Deon Oliver, who also happens to be the chairman of of the Eastern Cape Province Darts Federation.
“It was the first time in six years that this tournament was held in South Africa. The reason was to find a darts partner for South Africa’s only professional darts player, Devon Petersen,” said Vernon Human, from the Eastern Cape Province Darts Federation. Petersen needs a darts partner to represent South Africa at the Betway World Cup of Darts which will be held in Frankfurt, Germany from 1-4 June 2017. A total of 170 top darts players in South
Africa participated in the Last Man Standing Darts Tournament. Spectators flocked to the Grand West Casino in Cape Town where it was held. Approximately 3 000 spectators viewed the action during the course of the tournament. According to Human, it started with a round-robin consisting of 11 players. Oliver lost only 1 leg. “The competition then came to the knockout stages which were nerve wracking. At one stage Oliver was 1-3 down and it was the first to 4! “But somewhere he got his strength back and won 4-3. After that, the writing was on the
wall and Oliver took the honours,” said Human. In the grand finale, Oliver won against Shawn Hogan, a current Protea darts player. Hogan is an international darts player. “The darts fraternity in the province as well as locally, wish to congratulate Oliver for winning the first ever Last Man Standing Darts Tournament in South Africa,” said Human. Oliver contributed to establishing Ibhayi Darts in Nelson Mandela Bay. The Eastern Cape Province Darts Federation wishes to thank Desmond Steffens for the safe transport to Cape Town and back.

Extreme 4x4 and aerobatic action at airfield HEILIE COMBRINCK

he Eastern Cape 4x4 Challenge Club will host its first event of the season on Saturday at the upgraded track next to the Uitenhage Airfield. Drivers from across the country will participate in the various classes. Local competitors Karel Spangenberg and Antonie Swart, who are competing in the 2017 National Series’ Top Truck Class will be up against stiff competition from Johannesburg. “At first we had Chaos, but Total Chaos is a new concept 4x4 truck and it was built to conquer chaos. It goes anywhere with the greatest of ease and its power is unbelievable,” said Karel Spangenberg from Eastern Cape 4x4 Challenge Club. He equipped Total Chaos with an immensely powerful Lexus 4.3 V8 engine. Its suspension operates totally individually which offers breathtaking manoeuvrability. The 4x4 event forms part of the Wings and Wheels festival programme. Drivers will have to complete 10 extreme obstacles at the 4x4 track. Another first at the festival and in the Eastern Cape will be an additinal 5 obstacles which will be tackled in the dark. The 4x4 Extreme event starts Saturday at 09:00 and will run all day with a 4x4 Night Challenge from 18:00-22:00. Some of the other adrenaline-packed action of the festival include the WWP Wrestling tomorrow at 18:30, radio controlled aircraft, helicopter flips and aircraft trips, a vintage car display with the highlight being the air show and performances by international aerobatic pilot Patrick Davidson and his dad Stu Davidson. )For more information visit the Wings and Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show website and Facebook. =Patrick Davidson will fly his singleengined Sukhoi Su31, a Russian aerobatic aircraft, which has the capability of literally hanging 90 degrees on its propeller in the sky.
