randstigting blyk die oorsaak te wees van ’n brand wat Vrydagoggend ’n vliegtuigloods met sewe mikroligte vliegtuie by die Uitenhage Aero-klub verwoes het. Volgens ’n polisiewoordvoerder, ao. Marianette Olivier, het ’n forensiese deskundige drie plekke op die toneel geïdentifiseer waar vuur gemaak is. ’n Saak van brandstigting word ondersoek. Colin Dettmann, voorsitter van die klub, het aan die UD Nuus se susterskoerant Die Burger gesê hulle is reeds moedeloos oor al die inbrake die laaste tyd, en dat die inbraak en brand van verlede Vrydagoggend lede se bloed behoorlik aan die kook het. “Ons verwag optrede van die polisie – die brand is die laaste strooi.” Die Suid-Afrikaanse renjaer Michael Briggs, ’n eienaar van een van die mikroligte vliegtuie wat uitgebrand het, sê hy is gebroke, maar nie oor die geldskade nie. “Soos die meeste vlieëniers het ek ’n geweldige passie vir dié sport en kan nie glo dat iemand met opset iets soos hierdie kan doen nie.” Erika Lambrechs is die mede-eienaar van die vliegtuigloods en een van haar mikroligte vliegtuie het ook uitgebrand. “Dit is die derde keer in die afgelope twee weke dat daar by die loods ingebreek is.” Volgens Lambrechs, wat ook die sekretaresse van die vliegklub is, het die opsigter Vrydagoggend toe hy oopsluit onraad bemerk. “Die vuur het in die vroeë oggendure binne die loods uitgebrand. Die brandweer is wel ontbied net om sek-

Adding to the excitement of the centre’s educational role which it strives to fulfil, it also will be the first official satellite centre to be part of Africa’s largest science festival. “Our science centre will this year officially be part of Scifest Africa, South Africa’s national science festival which is held annually in Grahamstown. The Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre will operate as a Scifest Africa satellite centre from 13 to 22 March with several international guest speakers being part of the programme,” said Rütters. the capacity to expose learners to all aspects of science and technology. The science centre has advanced equipment with two indoor classrooms as well as an outdoor classroom. Classes are conducted by well-trained science communicators, also referred to as “sci-comms” who operate under guidance of experienced Chris McCartney, the centre’s Educational Manager. “Through our sci-comms we have the ability to expose smaller groups to the marvel of science and technology, which will have a bigger impact on these learners’ educational experience.” According to Rütters schools are invited to book Grade 4 to 7 classes to attend these lessons at the science centre. The duration
of each lesson is 90 minutes and include fun time through experiencing the 80 interactive science and technology exhibitions. Day outings for scholars are also conducted by the science centre in conjunction with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. This includes visits to the Drostdy Museum. KwaLanga Memorial, Railway Museum, VWSA’s AutoPavilion and fun time at the science centre. The Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre is open to the public on Mondays to Fridays from 09:00-16:00. The cost is R15 for children and R30 per adult. A good turnout was experienced as Uitenhage residents rolled-up their sleeves to assist in cleaning-up the neglected area next to Mosel Road last Saturday. “We were able to cover quite a big section of our Mosel Road task. Unfortunately we have been given a bit of a run around by our local Metro folks, but this will not deter us. We will proceed,” said Dave McCleland from the Uitenhage Town of Dreams project. “Thanks once again to all who participated and for all residents who brought us cooldrinks, coffee and ice lollies. This shows the true spirit of what our town is all about.” Local businesses are also thanked for their growing support.

Thirty year of loyal service
Three officers stationed at the Uitenhage Police received recognition for their 30-years of loyal service rendered. These officers completed their 30 years of service for the SAPS during the month of January 2013. This is the first time that Uitenhage police have given recognition to their members for loyal services rendered and the project will continue in the future.

Rotary Anns projects to uplift the needy The Rotary Anns (wives of the Rotarians) of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South are involved in a number of projects which all are to the benefit of the vulnerable and needy in the community. “Our projects include the making up of basic food parcels which are distributed among needy families in Uitenhage. We also visit the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital one Saturday per month to provide sandwiches to the mothers of the children in ward 6B,” said Rotarian Marilyn Klassen. Old age homes are visited regularly to distribute biscuits to the elderly. They also supply them with wool to knit jerseys and beanies which are then distributed by the Rotary Anns to schools and crèches in the Uitenhage region during the winter months. The Rotary Anns recently visited St Joseph’s Primary School where they handed out 125 uniforms to some of the children. This project was supported by the District Governor of Rotary District 9320 and the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, as well as by retired teacher, Mrs Virgie Scharnick, who assisted by making the uniforms.

For most South Africans, the past festive season comprised a stay-at-home holiday spending time together as a family, enjoying road trips and taking the kids out for a meal at a fast food restaurant. With no more cash in their hands than they had in 2011 – and struggling to keep up with electricity increases as well – consumers bought extra food, furniture and clothes for the family rather than spending money on luxury holidays. This is the picture emerging when using statistics provided by BankservAfrica to access consumer card spending data, giving valuable insight into how South Africans spent their 2012 festive season. “It seems consumers in general were very careful, since December 2012 showed one of the slowest increases in card transactions in the last few years,” explains Brad Gillis, CEO for regulated products at BankservAfrica. Chief economist for economists.co.za Mike Schüssler said: “South African consumers are certainly a bit more under pressure than before, as this is the lowest increase in average card values for a December holiday period since 2009.” The data generally indicates consumers mainly spent at supermarkets and service stations, followed by department stores and, surprisingly, restaurants. Fast food restaurants had fewer credit card transactions than family clothing stores, convenience stores and liquor stores. The least number of transactions took place in the traveling industry (including flights) and furniture stores. “For every one travel transaction, there are 13 transactions in a restaurant. For every hairdresser visit, there are 10 visits to either a garage or its convenience store. The figures probably do not fully reveal the importance of fast food restaurants, but in most cases these figures do indeed reveal that petrol stations and supermarkets are the places that South Africans visited most in a consumer sense,” says Schüssler. The Property Poser experts have been approached by a reader who has been renting a property that seems unfit for habitation. The tenant has lived there for six months and encountered a number of problems, including a complete lack of built-in cupboards. He also reports that the front door and internal doors cannot close properly. A broken lounge window that was supposed to be replaced was never fixed and the reader has suffered two burglaries as a result. He adds that the toilet leaks and electrical problems have caused the casings of several light fittings to melt. From the reader’s explanation, it is unclear what complaints or requests have been made to the owner, says Stiaan Jonker of Smith Tabata Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay. “It’s also not clear what undertakings were given when he occupied the property.” Jonker says factors such as whether a joint inspection was done – and whether the landlord undertook to correct the issues noted – will determine his remedy. “The Rental Housing Act makes provision for the joint inspection of a dwelling prior to occupancy to ascertain whether there are any defects or damage that must be registered and/or fixed by the landlord.” The property may well have been in its current state at the time of inspection and the tenant may have accepted it as such, says Jonker. “For example, built-in cupboards, or the lack thereof, are fairly obvious to spot and a concession on the rental could have been reached.” In the absence of information relating to negotiations, discussions and inspections, only broad outlines can be given as to what steps the reader can take, says Jonker. “The landlord is obliged to repair it to the condition agreed upon, whether in the lease agreement or after the inspection.” At the very least, it should be in a condition reasonably fit for the purpose for which it is let, says Jonker. “The landlord must also ensure that all statutory requirements are complied with, such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which requires a valid electrical compliance certificate.” According to Susan Chapman from Rawson Properties PE Platinum in the metro, it appears that many of the issues experienced make the property unsuitable for habitation. “Our reader should put the owner on terms

Chev Utility sport puts car into bakkie BETTIE GILIOMEE GONE are the days that one thought only its practical merits were important when deciding on purchasing a bakkie. These days many bakkies, or light commercial vehicles, are often used by small families for all their travelling needs, as economically as possible to deal with high fuel prices. And that is exactly what the Chevrolet Utility is aimed at and delivers on. This is the verdict I came up with after test-driving the Chevrolet Utility Sport 1.3 diesel. It’s a cost-effective bakkie
which offers a solid performance and good fuel economy, as well as plenty of safety and convenience features as standard, such as a class-leading infotainment package. So form meets function – one can drive, economically, in comfort and style, while carting everything from the dog to bricks.
Exterior
The Chev Utility is locally assembled at General Motors Struandale plant in Port Elizabeth, and its styling is the biggest change since changing to the Chev brand. It’s bold, fresh and stands out from the crowd.

Interior
The cabin is surprisingly spacious. Even the space behind the seats is impressive and can easily fit a couple of grocery bags or a bookcase and sports bag. The two separate seats fold down at the pull of a tab. The dashboard is simple and uncluttered and the instrument panel with odomoter and trip info, easy on the eye. In addition to four cupholders, there are also plenty of clever storage compartments. Adding to the convenience features of the Utility, is the feature that sees one of the two electric windows slide down slightly each time a door is opened. And when the door is shut, the window closes automatically. According to the experts, this serves to release air pressure from within the small cabin, making it far easier to shut the door properly at first attempt. Another very nice comfort feature is the automatic headlights that turn themselves on and off when the conditions require it, as well as when one unlocks or locks the vehicle. Seating in this workhorse is comfort-
able. And as expected from a workhorse, durable materials are used for the interior. The instrument cluster sports a modern look with the on-board computer’s digital read-out and funky blue backlighting contrasting with the speedometer ’s retro look. The result – the Utility is a bakkie with car features which just a few years ago you would never expect to encounter in a vehicle of this type. A feature I would have liked to have seen is park assist or rear sensors. Even though it is a rather small bakkie, the design of the loadbox in almost an upward slant, obscures visibility at the back of the vehicle. So one quickly has to learn to drive with the mirrors.
Features
The Base model of the Chevrolet Utility offers a great list of standard features, such as driver and passenger airbags, anti-Lock brakes (ABS), a 12V auxiliary power supply, “Follow Me Home” lighting, power steering, tiltable steering column, height adjustable driver’s seat and lockable tailgate

A 6-speaker RDS audio system is standard on the Club and Sport models and optional on the Base model. The system features a front-loading CD player, MP3 compatibility, and both a USB port and auxiliary inputs for iPods and other entertainment devices. All radios support Bluetooth Audio Streaming, as well as Bluetooth handsfree connectivity for mobile phones.
Ride
From a technical perspective, the Utility Sport 1.3 diesel offers 55 kW and 170 Nm of torque from its 16-valve fourcylinder engine. Admittedly it is a little bit noisier than a car, especially since it is diesel powered, but it really does handle like a car. The Utility Sport feels very solid on the road but is still zippy and responds quickly to commands.

Amarok’s towing capacity increased Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is expanding the transmission options available in the Amarok model range with the introduction of an innovative 8-speed automatic. This new transmission system combines a high degree of ride comfort and good off-road abilities with excellent level of fuel consumption. Sporting a new 8-speed automatic transmission, the Amarok is the first bakkie in its class to have a transmission system of this kind. The development emphasis was on efficiency, smooth gear shifting, weight reduction and reliability. The gearshift speed is at the level of the sportier DSG transmission. The 8-speed automatic transmission uses a torque converter. This allows for better response at low speeds and less resistance to slip than a DSG transmission. These are key factors during off road driving and towing. The first gear is configured as a low range gear that can be used for pulling away in offroad use or when towing. The low engine revs that are generated also have a beneficial effect in terms of lowered engine noise. The new automatic transmission is combined with a 132kW 2.0-litre Bi-turbo TDI engine. It has maximum torque of 420 Newton metres that is available at 1 750rpm. Relaxed driving is also assured when towing a trailer or with a heavy payload. With the automatic gearbox, the Amarok’s towing capacity has been increased to 3.0 metric tonnes (up to 12% gradient). From April 2013, all Amarok models will be available with BlueMotion Technology.
