Quinette Goosen, voorsitter van die Uitenhage Recycling Mula Swop Shop-projek, erken dit dan ook. “Ons bestee gemiddeld R3 500 na
R4 000 per Mula-middag. Ons bedel maar oral, hou verkope en maak staat op die goedhartigheid van die publiek. “Die kos wat die kinders [byvoorbeeld sop en brood] ná die inlewering van die herwinbare rommel kry, is ook vir ons rekening. “Soms is daar skenkings soos vandag gedoen deur die lede van die Alpha Leo Club, en verder ook kerke, besighede en skole,” sê Goosen. By die Allanridge gemeenskapsentrum, waar die Mula Swop Shop
is, is elke stukkie plastiek, papier en karton in enige sak wat dit kan hou. Dit is bymekaargemaak deur die kindertjies in die lang ry wat hul beurt by die “weegtannies” geduldig afwag. Woensdae is Mula-dag. Dan kan Uitenhage se kinders herwinbare plastiek en karton inbring om hul eie Mulas, bereken op die gewig van hul sakke herwinbare rommel, te verdien. Met dié Mulas kan hulle “inkopies” in die Mula-“winkel” doen – enigiets van speelgoed, klere
en skoene tot wasseep en kos. “Hulle kies veral kos,” sê Gloria Hare, wie se taak dit is om die kinders se “inkopies” met hul Mula-punte te vergelyk. “Hulle hou veral van die 2 Minute Noodles.” Sy het Maart verlede jaar as vrywilliger by die Uitenhage Recycling Mula Swop Shop projek ingeskakel. “Ná die eerste dag hier was my hart stukkend gebreek vir die kindertjies; nou is ek die kwaai auntie wat die inkopies opweeg teen die Mulas wat verdien is.”
Net onder die 2 000 kinders is by die projek geregistreer. “Op die Mula-dae daag tussen 250 en 350 kinders op met hul herwinbare produkte, sê Goosen. Police clamp down on illegal sellers of schedule 5 medicine
Efforts to fight against the proliferation of illegal firearms and the continuous eradication and clamping down on the illegal selling of schedule five medicine in the Uitenhage Cluster is attributed to police visibility and good informer networks. Last week on Wednesday, members from the Uitenhage Operational Command Centre, received valuable information and after obtaining a search warrant they arrested a 26-year-old male suspect for the illegal dealing in schedule five medicine at a residence in Skimmer Street, Rosedale. Police confiscated 6 693 Stilpane tablets and R6 000 in cash and handed them in as exhibits. The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court last Friday. According to police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, members from the Uitenhage Operational Command Centre followed up on
further information and arrested 4 suspects in a house in Nhanhanha Street, Kwanobuhle, after an unlicensed firearm with ammunition was found in their possession. One Norinco 9mm pistol with ammunition was seized. “The four suspects, who are between the ages of 18 and 20 years were detained and appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court last Friday on charges ranging from the illegal possession of a firearm to the illegal possession of ammunition,” said Swart. The deputy Cluster Commander of Uitenhage and overall commander of the Operational Command Centre, Brigadier Ronald Koll has applauded the members for their swift action and the arrest of the suspects. Brig Koll also commended the community for working with the SAPS by providing valuable information that led to the arrest and recovery of the illegal firearm and medicine.

Record incentive set for Diva Run
A covert metro police unit, operating with unmarked vehicles that are fully equipped to record traffic violations, took to Nelson Mandela Metropole’s streets last week. “We are taking back our roads from lawlessness and the general disregard for traffic laws with the start of a duly authorised Metro Police ghost squad on the Nelson Mandela Bay roads,” said member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security John Best. “We took a lot of criticism but could not have this unit on the roads any sooner as it was cru-
cial to follow due process. “The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) first had to approve the unit, which took months. Officers were trained to operate the on-board cameras effectively to avoid legal loopholes for transgressors,” said Best. Within three hours of starting, officers pulled over an overloaded taxi and the driver was charged for contravening Regulation 233 1 (b) of the National Road Traffic Act. A total of 43 high school children were crammed into the taxi. The four ghost squad vehicles from the metro police are in addition to one covert vehicle from the traffic department, which brings the tally of unmarked vehicles to five.

Kidpreneur programme to change lives
T
he Young Entrepreneurs (YE) Foundation on Maonday launched its first programme in the Uitenhage area at the Uitenhage Primary School. The YE Foundation were able to launch this project with the funds donated to them by the Volkswagen for Good Initiative run by the Volkswagen Community Trust. To date the Volkswagen for Good Initiative has handed over funds to the value of R2.8 million to deserving local charities and non-profit organisations allowing these organisations to continue the good work they do in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. The Young Entrepreneurs Foundation (YE) programme teaches children, aged between
7-15, vital entrepreneurial and financial literacy skills. This helps children start and grow their own micro-enterprises in a fun and experiential way. The programme runs over 30 weeks and schools are utilised as study centres. The classes are offered by YE accredited Facilitators. One of their goals is to inspire youth and change their lives. Minipreneurs and Kidpreneurs The children are divided into two sections Minipreneurs (Grade 2 and 3) and Kidpreneurs (Grade 4-6). The programme runs from Monday 31 July to Friday 24 November. In Minipreneurs there are 5 classes each consisting of 12 learners per group. The Kidpreneurs classes consist of 4 classes with 13
learners per group. The teaching staff at Uitenhage Primary School assisted in selecting the children for the programme. The classes are also run by the teachers at the school who have been trained in all the facilitation and technical skills required. At the launch Ansulene Prinsloo, the Implementation Agent for the YE Foundation in the Eastern Cape, said “Given all the realities there has never been a more important time to empower and capacitate our children to become the authors of their own destiny. It is through sponsorships like these that we can change the lives of children and provide them with the necessary skills to become valuable contributors to the economy and society at
large. Together we inspire dreams and thanks to VWSA for that” Each child also received a backpack, books and various products/ materials that they will require for the 30 week programme. “Seeing the money donated by the Volkswagen for Good Initiative being used in a real and tangible way to enrich the lives of young children is encouraging and reinforces VWSA’s commitment to early childhood development and education. Teaching a child independence and entrepreneurial skills can and will be life changing for them as they grow older.” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa Chairman and Managing Director.

surreal looking never-seen-before massive circular construction onboard of a just as strange vessel anchored near the Port Elizabeth harbour had people guessing what it could be. Is it an “aqua space ship”, weird oil rig or “Gupta island”? Kgadi Matlata, acting harbour master said it was an aquafarm coming from China and destined for Norway. conditions at sea. The Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Fisheries approved the world’s first fully automated, exposed aquaculture facility, or commonly referred to as ocean farming. When in operation, a massive aquafarm cylinder will require a crew of only three to four people. It can also be remotely operated. According to The Maritime Executive newsletter, Nordic aquafarms are built to meet the global demand for seafood and specifically salmon. They commenced with this project in 2017 and will be in full operation in 2018.

Sonop netbal 13de op SA netbal-ranglys HEILIE COMBRINCK Nelson Mandelabaai metropool se top o.13 netbalspan, die o.13A span van Laerskool Sonop op Despatch, het die afgelope naweek in Boksburg aan die nasionale netbalkampioenskap vir laerskole deelgeneem. Daar is kragte gemeet met die land se beste o.13 netbalspanne. Iets wat aan dié Sonop meisies bekend is want hulle het verlede jaar ook as top metro-span aan die nasionale kampioenskap deelgeneem. Die skool se netbalorganiseerder en afrigter van dié span, Desireé Brummer sê die “meisies het elke wedstryd voluit gespeel asof hulle in ’n finaal was. Ons is baie trots op hulle.” Sonop se span het 8 wedstryde gespeel waarvan hulle 5 gewen het.
Hulle het algeheel 13de geëindig van die 23 spanne van regoor die land wat deelgeneem het. Die ander afrigters van die span is Surika Pienaar en Chantelle van Rensburg. Sonop o.13 netbalspan se kaptein, Mieke de Kock het voor hul vertrek gesê hulle sien uit na die wedstryde en is trots om die Nelson Mandelabaai metropool te verteenwoordig. Laerskool Sonop se o.13A netbalspan het vanjaar al die Uitenhage en Despatch spanne in hul liga geklop.
Hul het dié seges voortgesit en is ook as Nelson Mandelabaai kampioene gekroon. Daarna het hulle aan die Oos-Kaapse kampioenskappe in OosLonden deelgeneem waar hulle gekwalifiseer het om deur te dring na die nasionale kampioenskappe in Boksburg. Slegs twee Oos-Kaapse 0.13 netbalspanne het gekwalifiseer vir die nasionale ronde, Sonop as die beste span in die metro en Jeffreysbaai laerskool se span.

By die Oos-Kaap kampioenskap het Brandwag tweede geëindig nadat hulle Nico Malan 34-21 geklop het, maar 29-31 vasgeval het teen Hoërskool Kingsridge. DP swimmers brave the cold Daniel Pienaar swimmers brave the cold during the JBay Winterfest where the 5th Cold Water Classic was held. The conditions could not fit the title any better. With the air temperature at a windy 11°C and the water at 13.6°C only nine swimmers braved the conditions in costumes, goggles and swim caps. The rest of the field opted for wetsuits. In total 32 swimmers took part in the 3 distances – the mile, the double mile and the triple mile. Tigers stir up a dust storm

The annual Volkswagen Rally which consists of 10 stages always excites citizens of Nelson Mandela Bay. Most of these stages consisted of mixed stages which tested both drivers’ and navigators’ skills as they had to contend with tar and gravel surfaces. On the Friday evening the participants also had to showcase their night driving ability during the two night stages. The Daniel Pienaar THS team with driver JP Smit (17) and his navigator and teacher Martin Kleingeld again made the school proud when they managed to finish 2nd in class. This is truly a marvellous accomplishment as only 24 of the 35 cars managed to complete the rally – an indicator of the gruelling nature of this rally. The success of any rally team depends on its sponsors and pit crew – the team would like to take this opportunity to thank the few sponsors as well as their pit crew under the leadership of Martin Kleingeld Snr and consisting of Daniel Pienaar learners.
