he two canine members of Addo Elephant National Park’s (AENP) ranger corps, Bullet and Banshee, are now equally protected from life-threatening situations, like their human counterparts. This is thanks to the donation of bullet proof vests from integrated risk solutions company, Quemic. In addition to this, the company also donated two trauma/first aid kits specifically for the dogs, as well as dog food for an entire year. Quemic’s Regional Ranger in the Western Cape, Nikki Haynes, was born in Addo when his father, Mike Haynes, was the hospitality services manager in the Park. Mike heard about Addo’s need for the items at a demonstration with the dogs about two months ago and thought it was an ideal opportunity for Nikki to get involved, as the company he works for, Quemic, already provides firearm training to SANParks’ Environmental Monitors. The company is also involved in antirhino poaching operations with private landowners and other nature conservation agencies. Quemic’s Director, Gerrit Lamprecht and Nikki were on hand to personally hand the safety equipment and food over to the dogs and their handlers in the Park. The vests, trauma/first aid kits and food are valued at over R130 000. “If one is personally involved in nature conservation, as we are through our business, you know the landscape and try to help wherever you can,” said Nikki. “All of us in the nature fraternity need to

look out for one another, irrespective of the size of our organisations. And for me, personally, this was just the perfect fit, given my history with and in Addo.” Addo’s two canine rangers, Banshee and Bandit, are about 5 years old and provide sniffing and tracking support to the rangers. Bandit, provided to AENP by the Endan-
gered Wildlife Trust, and Banshee will now be kitted out in their bullet proof vests while on duty, protected from gunshot wounds and knife attacks. Their handlers will be given training on how to use the dogs’ trauma/first aid kits, which are advanced enough to sustain them until they reach a veterinarian.
AENP Conservation Manager, John Adendorff, says, “We cannot tell you how grateful we are for your handover today. We want to give our dogs everything we can to ensure their safety, as we do with our rangers. “They are integral to our operations and today’s sponsorship ensures that they have the best protection when they’re in the field.”

aar is baie “Ystermanne” op Despatch, en vanjaar spog dié dorp met sy eerste vroue-inwoner wat dié internasionaalgewilde én moordende Ysterman driekampuitdaging suksesvol voltooi het.
Karen Mels (52) het 8 Two Oceans, 6 Comrades en ’n hele paar Redhouse riviermyle agter die rug, terwyl deelname aan die Ysterman-kompetisie altyd maar net ’n droom gebly het. Nou hang haar Ysterman-medalje in haar huis nadat sy haar droom met ‘n tyd van 14:47:31 bewaarheid het. “Daar is ’n gesegde wat lui: Every Ironman needs an iron fan. Ek het gedink ek sal altyd ’n fan bly en nooit self dit kan doen nie,” sê Mels, ’n ouditeur by die Suid-Afrikaanse Inkomstediens, wat vir jare ’n getroue Ysterman-toeskouer was. Haar eerste tree van toeskouer na deelnemer is juis te danke aan haar verloofde, Marius van Deventer, wat haar aangemoedig het om saam met hom te oefen. “My verloofde het in 2011 sy eerste Ysterman gedoen en toe ook in 2012, wat sekerlik die ergste Ysterman-kompetisie ooit was weens ekstreme weersomstandighede. “Ek het hom bewonder vir wat hy vermag het. Nou doen ons dit saam en is ons mekaar se grootste Iron fans.” Op daardie stadium het sy swemlesse geneem met haar oog op deelname aan die jaarlikse Redhouse riviermylswem-uitdaging. “Swem en fietsry is vir my die belangrikste komponente van die drie elemente. “Vir die Ysterman moet jy see-swem tot perfeksie oefen want daar is soveel veranderlikes in die see waarmee jy moet rekening hou. “Maar, wanneer ek eers in die see- water is, kom daar ’n ongekende gevoel van vrede in my, dit is vir my die lekkerste van die drie elemente van deelname,” sê Mels. Sy het in 2015 na ’n streng oefenprogram van 16 weke haar eerste Ysterman aangepak. “Met die swem het dit goed gegaan, maar toe mis ek die fietsry-afsnytyd met twee minute omdat my fiets se ketting probleme veroorsaak het. So, dit was ’n groot teleurstelling want dan kan jy nie verder deelneem nie.” Sy vertel dat die voorbereiding vir ’n Ysterman nie net gaan oor swem (3.86km), fietsry (180.25km) en hardloop (42.20km) nie - én om dit in alle weersomstandighede te kan vermag nie - maar ook om ewe hard jou kop reg te kry sodat jy geestelik fiks is vir die uitdagings. “Ysterman is eintlik ’n uitdaging in jouself. Daar is nie ’n kortpad in voorbereiding nie, dit is taai ... baie taai, maar dit is ’n onvergeetlike belewenis. “ ’n Mens se laaste paar treë oor die rooitapyt en om verwelkom te word as ‘You are an Ironman...’ is ’n onbeskryflike trotse gevoel.

Crossing the metro’s racial divide R
esidents of Nelson Mandela Bay are being given the opportunity to share their life stories in order to help bridge the metro’s racial divide. “The reality is that 23 years after the demise of apartheid we in the metro still have very low levels of interest, understanding or even tolerance of people who are different from us,” says Glenn Weiss, who is coordinating the “What’s your story?” campaign in the metro. According to Statistics SA, Nelson Mandela Bay is the most racially segregated of South Africa’s six metros, as measured by the Theil’s Entropy Index scorecard. Stats SA points out that the most racially segregated city in the United States is Detroit – Nelson Mandela Bay is sometimes billed as “the Detroit of Africa”. Johannesburg is the most racially integrated of the metros. The What’s your story? movement has been launched in the metro to coincide with the screening of the South African movie “Beyond the River,” which is based on a true story. “What’s your story?” is an initiative devel-
oped and backed by the Heartlines team, which was also behind the making of the movie. “There is currently an immense trust deficit in our nation and certain politicians seem to be doing everything to further polarise the different race groups. “The subtitle to the campaign: ‘You know my name, but you don’t know my story’ perfectly describes how we live our busy, segregated, compartmentalised lives. “It is imperative to get people of all races, cultures and backgrounds talking – and listening – which is the part that most of us battle with,” says Weiss. Over 450 facilitators and 20 trainers from the metro were coached by Heartlines during March ahead of the launch of the “What’s your story?” campaign. They are equipped to facilitate the programme in workplaces, schools, colleges, universities and churches. “Workplaces, high schools and tertiary institutions are natural melting pots of the various races and cultures that make up our metro and country. “We see What’s your story? making a signif-

Old Girls invited to Riebeek Founder’s Day The Principal and Staff of Riebeek College Girls’ High School invite Old Girls and friends of Riebeek to join them in celebrating their Founder’s Day tomorrow. Gong-skiet en 4x4 avontuur in Elandsriviervallei HEILIE COMBRINCK
G
ong-skiet klink na ’n vreemde sport, maar dit is inderdaad niks anders nie as teikenskiet in die veld na ’n metaalplaat. ’n Gong-skiet kompetisie, gekombineer met 4x4 uitdagings, word op 20 Mei in die Elandsriviervallei by The Meadows aangebied. Daar is nie sekerheid of gong-skiet sy naam gekry het van die “gong” klank wanneer die koeël die plaat tref nie, of omdat dit is dat die 200mm dikte pantserstaal-teiken wat aan ’n belt hang ’n gong genoem word nie? “Die gonge word op vyf verskillende plekke en hoogtes in die veld gehang en elke baan
bied sy eie uitdagings. Deelnemers moet met ’n viertrek-voertuig, wat ’n ander uitdaging is, van die een na die ander gong-baan ry,” sê Donovan Whitehead van The Meadows, die plaas in die Elandsriviervallei waar die gongskiet en 4x4 aangebied word. Spanne van 4 lede skryf in vir die gong-skiet en tussen hulle moet daar ’n 4x4 voertuig wees waarmee hulle na die 5 gong-bane ry. Die gong-bane is strategies én veilig uitgelê langs die 4x4 veldroete. Gongs word gewoonlik tussen afstande van 150m tot 300m van ’n skietpunt gehang. ’n Gong-skut kry 1 skoot met ’n jaggeweer (30 kaliber maksimum is toelaatbaar) op elke gong en as hy of sy raak skiet is dit 30 punte en ’n

In recognition of the quote by Marcus Garvey: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”, the girls were encouraged to dress up in the culture of their choice and celebrate the diversity, vibrancy and positivity of our country. Principal of Riebeek College, Kieran Stear said, “Cultural Civvies Day is always an awesome day on our school calendar as the school is abuzz with excitement at the creative, colourful and beautiful designs the girls select. “The girls love choosing which culture to represent and which outfit to wear and this culminates in a day of celebrating the rich heritage of the school and our country.”

Wheels galore at Spiders Web in aid of retinal blindness A request from Retina South Africa to help them raise funds has been taken up with the Spiders Web Pub, Workshop Crew MCC and the Uitenhage Lions Club. Thus on Saturday the “Wheels 4 Sight 2017” will be held at Spiders Web Pub which is situated on the R333 Cuyler Manor Road. The fun will start at 09:00 with a mass ride for all attending at 11:00. Bikes, trikes and exhibitions According to Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Cub, it will be a jam packed family friendly affair which will include vintage cars, stalls, trikes (3 wheel bikes), motorcycles, rally cars, dance competition for kids, auction, raffle for hampers, lucky draws, lots of bar specials and of course helicopter rides and the bikers will be exhibiting their skills with performing donuts. Food courts will be provided by the Uitenhage Lions Club. Services provided by Retina South Africa East Cape branch include assisting visually impaired people who have a retinal disease and/or an associated blinding disease. Trained staff identifies symptoms that indicate a retinal eye disease, assist in sourcing an accurate diag-
nosis as well as referral and assistance for various treatment options. Where there is a permanent vision loss, assistance with vision rehabilitation is offered. “All funds raised on Saturday’s event will be used to find genetic mistake causing retinal blindness in local families. Genetic results are the key that opens the door to participation in clinical trials and imminent therapies to treat retinal vision loss,” said Murphy. Dilapidated Addo road finally to be upgraded T
he South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced road infrastructure development programmes with a total investment value of R1,6 billion for the national road network in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Sarah Baartman District Municipality. SANRAL will break ground for 6 new construction, maintenance and upgrading projects in its new 2017/18 financial book year, according to Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL Southern Region Manager. “The forthcoming projects will not only advance road safety but also deliver a worldclass national road network to the province,” said Peterson. Golden era of prosperity through mobility Three of the projects along the R334, R342 and R336 will improve the quality of the national road network from Somerset East, Kirkwood and Paterson to Addo, and from Addo to Motherwell/Nelson Mandela Bay, while the remaining projects are focused on the R75 and N2 for Uitenhage, Joe Slovo and Colchester. The announcement was made at one of SANRAL’s several annual consultation and engagement briefings with municipalities in the Eastern Cape. SANRAL engaged the mayoral portfolio committee members of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) on cooperation requirements from the NMBM in relation to traffic control and municipal approval of rezoning or subdivision of land adjacent to national roads network, amongst other things. “Investment in the national road network in the Eastern Cape is poised to steer the region into a golden era of prosperity through mobility,” said Peterson. “A safer and effective road network is key to enhancing foreign and domestic direct investment, socio-economic growth and devel-
opment as well as government service delivery.” SMME contract participation Petersen indicated that SANRAL will set SMME contract participation goals and community training programmes in forthcoming tender calls to ensure utilization, maximization and development of SMME’s. The forthcoming national road network projects to be launched by SANRAL in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Sarah Baartman District Municipality later this year will include among others: Uitenhage offramp to Graaff Reinet Road • R75: A 10-month resurfacing of the Uitenhage off-ramp to Graaff-Reinet Road which will include repairing failures, rejuvenating old seals, asphalt overlay as well as road marking, sign and guardrails which will commence in November 2017. Addo Paterson road • R342: A 24-month special road maintenance project from Addo to Paterson which will entail repairs to poles and failures, improved access, appropriate sealing, fencing as well as road marking, signs and guardrails. Addo Motherwell road • R335: A 34-month upgrade of the road between Motherwell and Addo which will include widening of the road, new vertical and horizontal alignment, new pavement layers, improving safety aspects near intersections, resealing of the road surface as well as road marking, signs and guardrails. Addo Kirkwood road • R336: A 24-month road improvement project between Addo and Kirkwood scheduled to commence in November 2017 which entails widening of the road, reconstruction of bridges, improved accesses, appropriate sealing and fencing as well as road marking, signs and guardrails.

U’hage father and son angling duo wins boat

he annual Amatola Bass Classic was held at Wriggleswade Dam recently, which attracted some 75 boats and 170 anglers. Many of the anglers travelled from all over South Africa including a good number of the country’s top anglers and Protea Team members, all with the aim of winning the Crackle Back Boat & 115 Mercury 4 stroke outboard valued at R240 000 and many more fantastic prizes. This amazing prize went to Uitenhage anglers Todd and Sean Camons from Team Chevrolet. “We feel so blessed, as winning a classic together has been a lifelong
dream of ours as we have been fishing together from almost before Sean could walk,” said Todd Camons. They held the lead after day one with a decent bag which included the heaviest fish of the day, a 1.710kg bass. Hot on their heels were Ian Versveld and Joubert Ficke from the Western Cape. Camons commented that their fish weight was by no means safe as Wriggleswade is home to many large bass, some having topped the 5kg mark. At the day two weigh-in, fate and favour was such that the Camons
duo stole the glory which included a further three big fish prizes. Local anglers Jonathan Behnke and lady angler Sam Edmunds came very close to topping the 1.710kg fish. Camons said their win comes off the back of what has been a wonderful season for them. “Sean missed 1st place at the Chevrolet Classic by a scant 6 grams held at Brakkeduine. I was tying for 1st at a provincial fish-off at Impofu Dam and claiming the R2 500 purse which enabled us to enter the Amatola Bass Classic,” said Todd Camons. (-Heilie Combrinck)

Good-natured competition at Rotary’s charity golf day
A
lot of fun, chattering, and good-natured competition was had while raising valuable funds for charity, during the annual Rotary Club of Uitenhage South’s golf-day. All monies raised will be used for the upliftment of the Uitenhage community. This year the club has decided to support the Uitenhage Recycling Mula Project where children collect, sort and deliver recyclable materials to a central point, where it is exchanged for credits to ‘buy’ food, toiletries, cooking utensils and similar goods. There are more than 700 children registered from the poorest areas. “This is an excellent initiative and investment in our youth. It serves to develop a good working ethic and an appreciation for our environment, all the while helping struggling
Methuselah golfers in a ‘league of their own’ The Methuselahs Club is an integral part of the Uitenhage Golf Club and consists of senior golfers at least 55 years of age with an official handicap. In the late 1970s some of the senior members of the Uitenhage Golf Club decided to play a weekly game of 9 holes on Monday afternoons. Over the years these gentlemen became known as the Methuselahs. So, during 1980 they decided to form the Methuselahs Club, which was to operate as a sub-section of the Uitenhage Golf Club to cater for its senior members. Members were required to supply inexpensive prizes such as bottles of wine or boxes of chocolates on a rotational basis. During its 25th anniversary year in 2005, membership for the first time was offered to lady members of the Uitenhage Golf Club. The introduction of ladies has proven to be a great success and added an interesting new dimension to the Methuselahs Club. (-Heilie Combrinck)
