Knitting for Madiba’s legacy HEILIE COMBRINCK
“W
hat counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” With these words of Nelson Mandela in mind, the staff members of Uitenhage Library, in conjunction with colleagues from other municipal libraries in Nelson Mandela Bay, utilize every spare minute to knit warm wool scarves as part of their contribution towards Mandela Day. “We thoroughly enjoy the knitting. Some of us have only now learned how to knit, but this is a team effort in honour of Madiba and we wish to
make a difference in our communities,” said Pumza Sobetwa, one of the staff members at the Uitenhage Library who enjoys the knitting. According to Nompunelelo Ngcoko, supervisor and chief librarian at Uitenhage Library, they have identified three charities and one of them will be receiving the scarves to help keep away the winter cold.
Nomawonga Mbene, another staff member at the local library, said they are aiming to have 20 scarves ready by Mandela Day, July 18th, but really hope that time will be on their side so that they will be able to knit more. On Mandela Day, South Africans are called to devote 67 minutes of their time to promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity in their communities. A minute for each of

the 67 years Mandela has fought for social justice. Another aspect close to Madiba’s heart was literacy. The Uitenhage Library adheres to this with its Ilunda Reading Club to stimulate a culture of reading amongst children between the ages of 8 and 16 years. The public are most welcome to support this project through the donation of educational books which are suitable for these young minds. As Mandela said, “it is in your hands to make the world a better place” therefore, no matter what your action will be for Mandela Day, as long as it is about changing the world for the better. < Uitenhage Library staff makes use of every spare minute to knit woollen scarves for Mandela Day.
