Knitting for Madiba’s legacy HEILIE COMBRINCK
“W
hat counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” With these words of Nelson Mandela in mind, the staff members of Uitenhage Library, in conjunction with colleagues from other municipal libraries in Nelson Mandela Bay, utilize every spare minute to knit warm wool scarves as part of their contribution towards Mandela Day. “We thoroughly enjoy the knitting. Some of us have only now learned how to knit, but this is a team effort in honour of Madiba and we wish to
make a difference in our communities,” said Pumza Sobetwa, one of the staff members at the Uitenhage Library who enjoys the knitting. According to Nompunelelo Ngcoko, supervisor and chief librarian at Uitenhage Library, they have identified three charities and one of them will be receiving the scarves to help keep away the winter cold.
Nomawonga Mbene, another staff member at the local library, said they are aiming to have 20 scarves ready by Mandela Day, July 18th, but really hope that time will be on their side so that they will be able to knit more. On Mandela Day, South Africans are called to devote 67 minutes of their time to promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity in their communities. A minute for each of

the 67 years Mandela has fought for social justice. Another aspect close to Madiba’s heart was literacy. The Uitenhage Library adheres to this with its Ilunda Reading Club to stimulate a culture of reading amongst children between the ages of 8 and 16 years. The public are most welcome to support this project through the donation of educational books which are suitable for these young minds. As Mandela said, “it is in your hands to make the world a better place” therefore, no matter what your action will be for Mandela Day, as long as it is about changing the world for the better. < Uitenhage Library staff makes use of every spare minute to knit woollen scarves for Mandela Day. High tea to help raise funds for school hall HEILIE COMBRINCK
The Uitenhage High Past Pupil and Teacher Association (UHPPTA) will host a Winter Wonderland high tea at VW PeoplePavilion on Saturday starting at 14:00. The event forms part of the association’s fund-raising efforts for their flagship project, which is to build a muchneeded school hall. The total cost of this enormous project is estimated to be about R12 million. The keynote speaker is Catherine Campbell from the well-known non-profit initiative Mula Recycling Shop. The aim of the initiative is for children to collect, sort and deliver recyclable materials to a central point where they are exchanged for credits to “buy” food, toiletries
or educational items. The initiative aims to make people operate more environment-friendly and also to promote a cleaner environment. “Since UHPPTA’s inception, the core focus area of its activities has revolved – and still revolves – around the granting of bursaries to deserving, financially-needy learners,” said Malise Terblanche a member of UHPPTA. “To this end, the organisation has already disbursed an amount in excess of R165 000 to matriculants who have proceeded to embark on tertiary studies, as well as to the junior top achievers still at school.” )Tickets for the high tea are R100 and are available from Angelona Williams at 083 236 9609 or Roshaan Pather at 084 941 2708.

Riebeek house supports CHOC Riebeek College Girls’ High School has a house system and three houses compete in various inter-house events annually. There are Elizabeth House, Eleanor House and Elton House. Each house also has an opportunity to raise funds for a charity of its choice and then host the charity at a special ceremony where the guest speaker tells the school about the charity. Head of Elizabeth House, Sanelisiwe Jikeka, and her team held pancake and hot chocolate days, sold favours, held a music afternoon and organised various other initiatives to raise money for the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa, the cause they selected to support. CHOC is an organisation dedicated to providing assistance to children that are battling cancer or life-threatening blood disorders, and their families. Riebeek recently welcomed Riebeek Old

Girl, Lynne Gadd-Claxton, who works for the regional CHOC branch. Accompanying her was the CHOC mascot, Keemo. Gadd-Claxton informed the girls about CHOC’s goal which is to improve the welfare and quality of care of children with cancer and offers families a wide range of psychosocial and practical support. History of Riebeek houses The Riebeek house system was officially established in 1924, some 47 years after the school was founded. Initially, the school’s learners were divided into two houses for purposes of sports competition. One house
was named Eleanor, after Eleanor Brown, a past headmistress in the late 1800s, and the other house was named Elton, after Lucy Elton, headmistress in the early 1900s. During 1954 another house was added to the expanding school. The notion that a third house should be established at Riebeek, in order to minimise hostilities at sporting events, was initiated by Gillian Dugmore, the head girl of 1953. It was agreed upon that this new house be named after Queen Elizabeth who had formally been crowned queen of the United Kingdom during 1953.

Former Despatch head boy commended for his studies in mechatronics Theo Weyers from Despatch achieved his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics cum laude at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. He received the NMMU Council Award, a first degree award for 2016 in the Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology as well as a special award for being the best 4th year student. New shoes for Palmietrivier learners
100 Learners from Palmietriver Primary School received brand new school shoes. The learners are mainly from surrounding farming communities and some attend school barefoot. With winter in full force, Neville Dennis, the school’s principal, approached The EduHage Community Fund, requesting for assistance with school shoes.
The Edu-Hage Community Fund was established a few years ago with the aim of assisting South Africa’s youth, in particular those within the Uitenhage and surrounding areas. The fund’s vision is to empower the youth to become tomorrow’s leaders through a number of programmes which include career guidance, educational as well as financial assistance. Through the collaboration between The Edu-Hage Community Fund, Rand Merchant Bank and Bata, the donation and delivery of the new school shoes was arranged. Palmietriver Primary School and its learners would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to RMB as well as Bata, for making this donation possible. Weather, stars and game attract big crowds to Wildsfees
F
irst indications are that the number of visitors to the 16th annual SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees is up on 2016, according to Wildsfees director Jenni Honsbein.
Once all the offsite ticket sales have been tallied the number of visitors over the three days is expected to be 7% up on 2016, when around 42 000 people visited the festival. “Despite the economic challenges in the region, families save up to come to the Wildsfees to forget their cares for a day or three.
“What’s more the message is getting out nationally, and this year we attracted visitors from as far as Cape Town,” she says. The festival started on Friday with the sale of a record 55 buffalo and 50 Cape Mountain Zebra at the annual Kirkwood Wildsfees game auction. All 50 of the Cape Mountain Zebra from the Mountain Zebra Park were sold, at an average of R20 000 a head, according to auctioneer Brandon Leer. Turnover at the sale was R7,5 mil-

U’hage Lions induct their 58th president The Uitenhage Lions Club is one of the 46 000 Lions Clubs worldwide of Lions Club International (LCI) that was founded on 7 June 1917. “Since then LCIF has paid over US$ 1 billion in grants and currently has 1 445 591 members which is an all-time record that result in Lion clubs serving more communities

Oakley X-Over: July 20 - 21
The Oakley X-Over kicks off on July 20. First on the programme is the 15km mountain bike event that will pedal off at Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay at 12:00. The Friday will see the start of the surf event at Lower Point at 08:00. The athletes will then head over to the St Francis Links Golf Course for their nine-hole tournament.
JBay Loggers Classic: July 21 - 23
Fin sliders will battle it out at Lower Point from 08:00.
Endurade X Trail Run: July 21 - 23
The Endurade JBayX two-day/ three-stage trail run, entailing three individaul 20km trail runs - with all three runs starting 12 hours apart will leave the starting blocks at the Winterfest Hub at Lower Point at 07:00 on July 21. There will also be a 10km and 5km trail run at 09:00 and 10:00 respectively on July 23.
Kite Festival: July 21 - 22
Bright pink bears, big-pawed frogs, and big-eyed octopuses are set to colour the sky at Lower Point heading towards Kabeljous on July 21 and 22.
Windfarm MTB Classic: July 22
The fifth edition of the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic will peddle off at Kabeljous on July 22. Racing starts at 08:00 and the prize-giving is at 13:00.
