A
mid the water crisis in Nelson Mandela Bay metropole, there is a massive water leak at the bottom of Cannon Street in Kabah, Uitenhage, where millions of litres of water have literally been flowing down the drain for the past eight months.
Logan Lorenzo Istain, a resident from the area said there is a constant issue with water supply to the informal settlement opposite the canal as well as to the Rosedale area, whilst pure drinking water is gushing from the pipe at the Cat Canal, which flows into the Swartkops River. “We’ve seen many contractors coming and going since September last year. I don’t know what they have done, but obviously did not fix it. “It really does not look if they care about the drinking water that gets wasted here,” said Istain. A few metres away from where the water gushes from a blue pipe into the canal, there is a huge hole which contractors made months ago apparently to fix a water leak. “Look at that! Look how dangerous it is. There are no barricades, nothing to warn pedestrians or vehicle drivers of the huge hole which is partially in the road. “We as residents feel neglected. We are made aware of water restrictions and asked to report cases like this. This leak has been reported, but it does not get fixed. Look at it, imagine how much water has been lost over the past seven months. This is not right,” said Istain. Unattended excavation Employees at the Middle Street Clinic, which is next to the excavation which was made months ago to fix a water leak, said they were scared that a child or elderly person might fall into the hole. “It is deep and a person definitely will get injured. There are no traffic signals or tape to warn people of this huge hole. It has been

A Retina SA record fundraising amount of R18 410 was raised at the recently held Retina Wheels 4 Sight 2017 event held at Spiders Web near Despatch. Marius Kilian, a visually impaired person with only 10% sight, initiated the event. He was assisted by organisers which included the Uitenhage Lions Club and Workshop Crew MCC. Gail Cillie, Chairperson of Retina SA Eastern Cape said the Wheels 4 Sight event was a huge success owing to the generosity of the local community. The event provided an opportunity for members of Retina SA to provide information and counselling services to people experiencing problems with loss of sight who visited the event. “Funds raised will be utilized for the ongoing research project which will bring treatments for retinal blindness for members of the region,” said Lion Barend Erasmus of the Uitenhage Lions Club. He confirmed that it was possible that Retina Wheels 4 Sight would become an annual fundraiser. Lion President Hein de Vrey said, “This will aid Retina SA to assist them to continue with their research that will benefit visually impaired people.”

Deputy Minister plays part in building safer internet communities THE Deputy Minister of Communications, Thandi Mahambehlala (MP), together with the Film and Publication Board (FPB), engaged the community of Uitenhage on safer online usage as part of her Child Protection Week programmes on June 2 in the Allanridge Civic Centre. Child Protection Week took place from May 28 to June 4. This year the FPB are encouraging learners, parents, guardians and educators to play their part in protecting children by building safer online communities with the
theme “Stronger Communities, Safer Children”. The theme emphasises the importance of and value of connected communities in keeping children and young people safe and well. The campaign aims to provide communities and individuals with practical information on how to ‘Play Your Part’ in protecting children and also to instil primary prevention of messages into social discourse. The campaign will also provide a platform for communities to be empowered, re-

sourced and mobilised to take action at a local level, as is the take of Mmberegeni Dzebu, FPB’s Acting Chief Executive Officer. Research has shown that digital streams of media distribution and consumption are gaining popularity in South Africa. Internet access is itself a driver of these trends which is also available through mobile devices including smart phones. Based on the research that was conducted on the usage of smart devices, the FPB has embarked on awareness campaigns to mitigate the technology divide in disadvantaged communities, and among the youth, which has had both positive outcomes and challenges. The FPB will be engaging with various schools as a build up to the main event.
Learners from the 12 schools will be encouraged to play a big role in ensuring a safer internet community. The FPB outreach team will also share information with the learners on how they can enjoy the multiple benefits offered by the internet. The main event on June 2 included interactive group sessions on internet safety with guardians, educators and learners, as well as a Walkathon where the youth was to be mobilised to practise living in a safer internet environment. The youth, parents and educators were encouraged to pledge and encourage one another to practise safer internet activities. The theme for the Walkathon was “Be the change, Unite for a better internet”.

Victims of crime turn to the South African Police Service to report these cases. Therefore it is of utmost importance that trained volunteers are available to assist these victims and provide support at an equipped victim-friendly facility. These facilities should be at a police station. On June 1st, Addo police celebrated the opening of its Victim Friendly Facility. The furniture for the facility was donated by the Sundays River Valley Citrus Producer Forum. The police are very grateful for this generous assistance towards the facility. The Victim Friendly Facility was officially opened by the Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Major General JJ Fourie. The Department of Social Development also played a vital role in training the volunteers.

Jack Parow debut at Wildsfees South African Music Award (SAMA) winner, Jack Parow will be performing at this year’s SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees for the first time. Parow will be embracing his wild on the Adventure Province Main Stage on Friday, followed by Theuns Jordaan. PHOTO:ORACLE MEDIA The Gamble Pharmacy relay teams started where they left off by winning the first round of the unique 2017 Town Lodge Business Night Relay held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. New stadium manager, Mpho Mokonyama, got races underway and was full of praise for this unique event which is hosted by the stadium on the last Tuesday evening of the month and continues till the end of August. “It was fantastic to witness local businesses supporting this initiative and we, as the stadium, are proud to be the host venue of the Business Night Relay and are looking forward to staging many of these in future,” said Mokonyama. The Gamble Pharmacy 5 man relay team won Round 1 in a fast 58 minutes 34 seconds with two of the SPAR DC teams chasing hard. SPAR’s Running Blitz and Running Storm teams finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the men’s category whilst Gamble Pharmacy

also won the mixed relay category from PKF 1 and Rooftop Productions Team Kickin. In the women’s category it was the Woodridge Prep Ladies that proved too fast on the evening, winning in a time of 1 hour 23 minutes from Investec’s Blister Sister’s and the NOV Ladies. In the walking category, the 3-person team from Keiskamma Cycle Tours won in a time of 1hr 15min ahead of HRG Rennies Travel and the Town Lodge Moonwalkers. Over R20 000 in lucky draw prizes concluded the evening with feature prizes each month to include R1 000 cash, R2 500 Puma running shoe voucher, a R500 Caltex fuel voucher, and a 2 night stay for two people anywhere in the country at one of the City Lodge Hotels Group outlets.
