1 250 000th Polo produced in U’hage T

he 1 250 000th Polo produced at Volkswagen’s Uitenhage manufacturing factory left the production line last Monday. This milestone also marked 21 years of the production of the Polo in South Africa. The Uitenhage manufacturing factory produces Polo and Polo Vivo. Both have been the best-selling passenger cars in South Africa since 2010. “There is no better way to celebrate the success of the Polo Vivo as the best-selling passenger car in South Africa than to pay homage to its iconic predecessor, Citi Golf,” said Stefan Mecha, Director: Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Group South Africa. “The three colours of Red, Yellow and Blue are synonymous with the classic Citi Golf and it was fitting for us now also to use them as the only colours for Citi Vivo. “Citi Vivo is a special edition with about 2 000 units planned.” Polo is built for local and international markets. Polo Vivo was sold in South Africa only until December 2016 when the first Polo Vivos were assembled and sold in Kenya as part of Volkswagen’s Africa strategy. “Polo Vivo is a proudly South African car with German engineering ingenuity. About 70% of its parts are sourced locally which has helped local suppliers to create jobs. “Polo Vivo has the best resale value in its class,” said Mecha from his office in Uitenhage.

Check property details for valuation roll The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently in the process of distributing General Valuation Roll notices to individual property owners as prescribed by the Municipal Property Rates Act. These notices contain details such as the municipal value of a property and its description among others. Councillor Retief Odendaal, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Budget and Treasury, said, “This will give the owners of the more than 260 000 Nelson Mandela Bay properties an opportunity to make sure the details captured on the General Valuation Roll 2017 are correct or that nothing is omitted. “If the information is not correct an opportunity is now available to ensure that objections are either lodged regarding your own property or that of someone else before or on April 28, 2017. “Residents must please note that the process is legislated which means we will not be able to accept late notices. “In terms of Section 50(2) Local Government: Municipal

Property Rates Act No. 6 of 2004, an objection must be in relation to a specific individual property and not against the General Valuation Roll as such,” Odendaal said. Objection forms are obtainable at all the Customer Care Centres or on the website www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za. The General Valuation Roll for the period July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2021 is open for public inspection at the office of the Chief Financial Officer, Ground Floor, Mfanasekhaya Gqobose Building, Govan Mbeki Avenue, Port Elizabeth, for the period March 1 to April 28, 2017, Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 4pm, as well as on the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s website. Completed objection forms must be returned to the City Manager, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Valuation Roll, P.O. Box 834, Port Elizabeth, 6000. Alternatively, they may be handed in at any municipal Customer Care Centre. )For enquiries contact the Municipality’s Customer Call Centre on 041 506 5555 or send an email to valuations@mandelametro.gov.za. Leverne Butler’s long time dream was finally fulfilled on Wednesday, March 1. She can now finally serve her community as a law enforcer. Butler received her rank as a constable in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro police service and she was one of the 111 members inducted. Twelve sergeants, eight inspectors and 91 constables received their ranks from metro police chief Yolanda Faro at the Traffic College in Greenbushes. “Today is a very emotional and proud day because I have waited a long time for this and because I have always been passionate about law enforcement.” Roger Kettledas, a constable, said he had waited seven years to become a metro police officer. “I worked in a factory and remained positive that this day would arrive. I am grateful that the Lord has opened the door for me.” According to Faro, the metro police’s focus will be on Bethelsdorp and Uitenhage, but they will work wherever

it is needed. “We will also join forces with the South African Police Service when operations around the metro are undertaken. We will also continue to sharpen our officers’ skills in various and the latest law enforcement programmes so that they are able to handle any situation.” She added that the metro police’s three functions include enforcing municipal and traffic regulations and general law enforcement. John Best, mayoral committee member for safety and security, said his dream had come true, as he was on the task force for the establishment of the metro police in 2009. “We waited for this for the past seven years. The current government has made a commitment to the project. We have created 67 new jobs in the process.” Best said he was often asked why the metro police were not seen in the gang-ridden northern areas. “We are slowly but surely moving there, but we will not send people who are not yet properly trained for such situations. “We will provide support to the police. Only when we are comfortable that they are ready for it, we will send them to these areas,” said Best. 36 Graaff-Reinet Road, Provision is also made in the adjustments P.O. Property being targeted by ‘old hotel’ vagrants HEILIE COMBRINCK Residents from a house in Campher Street, Uitenhage are desperate as it seems that their property is being targeted by vagrants. “First my drive yard gates disappeared. Then one morning the fence was gone. Then the copper pipes were removed and now it seems that this is the general watering well for vagrants,” said Rawleenie Rawlenson, owner of the property which is adjacent to a municipal play park in the central part of town. Opposite the park is the backyard of the old Waterford Hotel of which the entrance is in Durban Street. Part of its backyard vibracrete wall has been vandalised and offers thoroughfare for vagrants living in back buildings of the hotel. The missing wall exposed large heaps of demolished television parts and other electrical equipment lying in the hotel yard. According to Jackie Naudé, who also resides at the house in Campher Street, the vagrants apparently come from the old hotel. “Children don’t come to the play park anymore as it has become dangerous and most of the play park equipment has been stripped or removed. “Instead, suspicious people are hanging out here. At night cars park in the park and it is evident that it is for sexual activities.

“The play park has fallen into desuetude. I have requested for it to be fenced. There are procedures to follow ... it will take time.” - UITENHAGE WARD COUNCILLOR TYRON ADAMS No maintenance is done at the park. It if it were not for the cattle which are brought here to graze, it would have been overgrown,” said Naudé. He said they do not mind offering water to those who are thirsty. “But, it is getting out of hand with an increasing water bill due to the vagrants’ usage.” “If that is not enough, vagrants last week vandalised the tap. Water was gushing from the pipe and I don’t want to know what the water bill will now look like.” Ward Councillor Tyron Adams said he was aware of the situation at Rawlenson’s property. “The play park has fallen into desuetude. I have requested for it to be fenced. There are procedures to follow and the fencing will not happen overnight, it will take time,” said Adams.

M

Dié pad het begin toe Sachse ’n proefstudent in Basson se klas was. “Hester was ’n gereserveerde harde werker.

Entries awaited for Mzansi Spelling Bee Entries for the 2017 Mzansi Spelling Bee competition are officially open. Now in its sixth year, the Mzansi Spelling Bee was formed by Miyela, a youth-based non-profit organization (NPO), to enhance and encourage young South Africans to work within their communities to build a culture of reading and spelling. They are looking for children between the ages of 9 and 17 who are currently in Grades 4 to 11 schools to participate in the event. The winner of the 2017 Mzansi Spelling Bee will represent South Africa in the 2018 Africa Spelling Bee and walk away with more than R10 000 in gifts and prizes.

Endorsed by the Department of Basic Education, the programme has been developed to speak to children by combining learning and playing. The programme will be going around to schools countrywide and engage spellers to take part in this year’s challenge. One Word, a coming of age theatre production on the Spelling Bee and movie screenings in local community halls and schools, will be used to inspire and motivate spellers to take the challenge to be Mzansi’s next speller. Application forms are available on request and the closing date for entries is May 31, 2017. For more info, contact Mzansi Spelling Bee on 076 250 4524.

(-Heilie Combrinck)

Everest climber - keynote speaker at sport conference M

ountaineering ace and motivational speaker Deshun Deysel will share her experiences from a lifetime of challenges as one of the keynote speakers at the Western Cape’s Provincial Conference on Sport in George next weekend. The conference will be hosted by NMMU on March 10 and 11 to explore the contribution sport can make to society, emphasising the development of youth and building community participation. The first black South African woman to climb Mount Everest, the 46-year-old Deysel, who grew up in Uitenhage and now lives in Johannesburg, has forged a career in motivational speaking while also managing to satisfy her mountain climbing craving. As a novice, she was not able to summit the mountain in the 1996 expedition, but she de-

scribed being part of the first South African team to plant the country’s democratic flag on top of Everest as “a dream come true”. After the Everest expedition, Deysel found herself increasingly driven to explore other mountain climbing avenues. This saw her undertake 14 expeditions on five continents, providing invaluable experience which she now imparts to others as part of her company, Deshun Deysel and Associates. She will use the conference in George to specifically focus on goal-setting and how competitors can handle tough situations. “I will address the issue of sticking to goals and trusting the process,” said Deysel. “I will deal with how impatient people can sometimes be in the pursuit of a goal and how this can, ultimately, cause them to give up and fail.”

She said one of the chief lessons she learnt from her mountaineering career was the importance of looking after your body. “You have to have an intimate understanding of your body’s needs and learn to listen to it. Sometimes you’ve got to go slow in order to go fast.” Deysel quoted the late Nelson Mandela as she reflected on the role of sport in creating a healthy lifestyle, developing the country’s youth and unifying the community. “As Nelson Mandela once said, ‘sport has the power to change the world and the power to unify people in a way that little else does’. “Through my work with the Laureus Foundation, I have seen how sport can make a positive impact, raising people out of poverty, creating understanding between differing factions and creating hope and even wealth.”

It is important to note that performance fees and savings products that can be used as transactional accounts are not allowed for tax free savings accounts (TFSA), cautions Gerald Mwandiambira, a strategist of the South African Savings Institute (Sasi). Treasury is not allowing the conversion of an existing savings account into a TFSA, it needs to be a new account. The new tax free savings accounts (TFSA) introduced by the government in 2015 are part of non-retirement savings and help to maximise tax relief, explains Mwandiambira. He offers insights on this new savings vehicle, introduced as an initiative to encourage a savings culture. All proceeds, which include interest income, capital gains and dividends from these accounts, are tax free. Individuals are allowed to open two tax exempt savings accounts per year. These accounts can invest in equities, fixed income accounts or both. Tax free savings will significantly increase the returns for individuals, according to Mwandiambira. There is a cap on the amount in that the total contribution that will qualify for tax exemption is R30 000 per annum, up to a maximum of R500 000 per lifetime. The account balance, including interest, can, however, exceed R500 000 in a lifetime. “I would recommend that savers invest the maximum amount permissible every year

for at least sixteen and a half years. Allow compounding to happen and watch your money grow,” says Mwandiambira. TFSAs can be issued by banks, long-term insurers, managers responsible for collective investment schemes, government, mutual banks and cooperative banks. “It is important to select a TFSA with the lowest possible fee charges. Banks add charges that eat into your savings, so make sure to shop around for the best possible option, he said. “TFSAs make excellent savings vehicles for education and I would advise parents to open an account in the name of a child as soon as possible after birth. A family of four can in effect save up to R120 000 a year in tax-free savings.” Young people starting to save may also find such accounts useful for long term savings, in his view. For example, if a 25-year-old invested R30 000 each year in an interest-bearing bank account, by the age of 65 they would have just more than R1.5m after tax. In comparison, a tax-free savings account with the same interest rate would be worth R2.7milion, because no tax is payable. “Although these accounts will certainly assist savers who have a habit of saving already, they cannot however change attitudes toward saving. It is important to make a decision to save for yourself, save for your children and save for the future,” says Mwandiambira. (Finweek24)

Police arrest total of 142 suspects Several successful operations were conducted over the past weekend and it resulted in the arrest of a total of 142 suspects for various crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster. These arrests includes murder, rape, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft out of motor vehicles, housebreaking and theft, theft and the possession of suspected stolen goods. Ten persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor over the past weekend. A multi-disciplinary roadblock was conducted on the R335, outside Addo and a total of 201 vehicles were stopped and searched. Fines to the value of R15 100 were issued during the course of the roadblock. A 29-year-old male suspect was also arrested for being in possession of 12 packets of tik. The suspect was arrested on the spot and detained on a charge of illegal possession of drugs, with an estimated value of R3 888. A total of 21 traffic fines were also issued,

valued at more than R10 500, during the past weekend. Four suspects were also detained on charges relating to the illegal possession of two 9mm firearms and ammunition. Other suspects were arrested on charges relating to malicious damage to property, contravention of protection orders and 15 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs. The reduction of crime in the Uitenhage Cluster will remain a priority for all the police members in this cluster and they will continue with their efforts to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster. The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property. )Crime Stop 08600 10111 or Crime Line SMS 32211

Armed suspects busted in Kruisrivier Police also confiscated the Toyota Tazz and it was handed in as an exhibit. The four suspects appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Uitenhage Station Commander, Brigadier Laurence Soekoe commended the team for the excellent work that they have done. “This is proof that the South African Police Service in Uitenhage will continue with their efforts to clean up our streets and getting rid of illegal and unlicensed firearms,” said Brigadier Soekoe.

Members from Uitenhage SAPS were busy patrolling the Kruisrivier business area last Sunday when they spotted four males driving suspiciously around in the area at about 08:30. Police members together with the K9 Unit requested for the red Toyota Tazz to pull off the road. Upon searching the vehicle the police discovered two unlicensed 9mm firearms and ammunition as well as a replica of an AK47. The four males (ages between 31 and 55) were immediately arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Man hit by train in Despatch The South African Police Service in Despatch are investigating a case of culpable homicide after an unknown male (in his late forties) was hit by a train at about 19:30 last Thursday, 2 March. The accident occurred on the railway tracks, close to Holland Street in Despatch. The victim has not been identified as yet

and he was wearing a pair of blue jeans, a black-and-white top with black shoes. The victim had no form of identification in his possession. )Anyone who might be missing a relative or might be able to assist with information is requested to contact SAPS Despatch on 041 933 8800, Crime Stop 08600 10111 or Crime Line 32211.

Tenants can make or break your sale W

ith the economy still in slow mode, some property investors are having to sell their rental properties to reduce their debts or raise cash – but are finding that this can be very tricky if they still have tenants in place. “In fact tenants can make or break your sale if they decide to be difficult,” says Greg Harris, CEO of Chas Everitt Property Rentals, “which is why most estate agents would recommend that you should wait for the current lease agreement to expire before you list the property for sale. “This may be especially important if you have disgruntled tenants or they are really unhappy at the thought of having to hunt for

a new home and move to somewhere less familiar and possibly more expensive. The last thing you want is to let them put potential buyers off, by making it difficult to access the property for viewings, for example, or by leaving it messy and dirty, or by hanging around during viewings with a long list of complaints. “Once a tenant has actually moved out, it does also give you an opportunity to clean the property thoroughly, repaint, tidy the garden and make repairs if necessary so that you can present it to potential buyers in the best possible condition and attract the best offers.” However, he says, waiting for a rental unit to be vacated before it is listed is not always

possible in terms of the seller’s finances. “It can take months from the time the home goes on the market until it’s sold, and there will of course be no rental income during this time if the property is empty. “In fact more often than not, owners do have to sell with their tenants still in occupation, and in such cases your best option is to let them know about your decision to sell as soon as possible, and keep them up to date as regards the progress of the sale. “You should also check your lease agreement, because it may contain a condition that the property may only be listed for sale in the last three months of the lease period. “We have found that most tenants will be

very co-operative as long as they feel they have been treated fairly and with consideration, and not left in the dark about a matter which does, after all, have a significant bearing on their future as well as yours.” Harris says that if you have enjoyed a good relationship with your tenants you may even be able to incentivise them to help you sell the property quickly. “If they will be staying on after the sale you could, for example, lower their rent for the next month or two in return for them making an extra effort to keep the place really clean and tidy for potential buyers. “Alternatively, if they have decided that they would prefer to move elsewhere rather than stay on with a new owner as their landlord, the incentive might take the form of assistance with their moving costs, or with the deposit on their new home. “In short, the success of dealing with a tenant during a sale is usually less about the message itself, than about how the message is delivered.” (Issued: Chas Everitt Property Rentals)

Testimony for KING LWASA

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWASA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWASA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

James 52 years Joubertina. I met ths powerful PROF KATO on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for many years, I tried many healers, sangomas, pastors and prophets but failed. ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AND FINANCIALLY DEPRESSED (DON'T lose faith, give Prof Hope a try) Strongest Healer

My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with my 2 daughters and 2 sons, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents, my farther 79 and my mother 76. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers but no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account IN JUST 30min. I made an appointment with him as he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. He also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind your property, male enlargement. He also treats over the phone and delivers nationwide plus home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

TESTIMONY OF HOPE AND TRUST FOR MAMA SHEENA

I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life, My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

Drive to develop young local volleyball stars HEILIE COMBRINCK

olleyball is being revived as the Nelson Mandela Bay Volleyball Association has taken up the challenge to let this sport gain the popularity it once enjoyed not only in Uitenhage and Despatch, but also the Eastern Cape.

nately lost. Volleyball school league “Our focus is very much on development. There are many talented young ones in our communities and we need them to become keen volleyball players. “In exposing them to volleyball, a schools development league is being played, with

some outstanding players participating,” said Prins. Local schools participating in the league include Uitenhage High, Gamble Street, John Walton, Dower Practising School, Uitenhage Primary, CW Hendrickse, Caritas, Limekhaya and Uitenhage Convent Primary. National Champions Cup The Nelson Mandela Bay Volleyball Association will host the National Champions Cup, seeing top clubs competing from April 24-28 at NMMU South Campus. Heading this challenge is former Jack-ofall-trades local sportsman Andrew Prins, also the chairman of the Nelson Mandela Bay Volleyball Association (NMBVA). According to Prins NMBVA is backed by Volleyball South Africa, the Eastern Province’s Sports Council as well as the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. “Two of the main reasons for the decline in volleyball were the lack of volleyball courts and lack of development among young players,” said Prins. “Uitenhage, countrywide, was known for its excellent volleyball players. W we even had Springboks. Now that most of these players have retired from the sport there is a huge gap as development of young players was not a priority.” Prins is excited about the municipality coming on board and granting the use of municipal halls in Rosedale, Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre, Despatch and Raymond Mahlaba hall. Other courts include those at NMMU Missionvale and South campuses as well as at VWSA PeoplePavilion. Currently NMBVA has 18 registered teams (12 male teams & 6 female teams) and Kouga has joined the association with their 2 teams. Last year the association hosted three provincial tournaments which include the South African Local Government Association volleyball games. In the latter, the NMBVA U.19 male team won with the U.19 female team finishing third. Three of the association’s members were included in the SA U.23 team. Four of NMBVA’s teams participated at last year’s Inter Provincial Tournament with the male and female U.23 teams both making it to the finals where they unfortu-
