illow Dam will be a hive of activities on Saturday when the Uitenhage Community Police Forum will host its fourth Carnival on the slopes of the park.

“With this carnival we want to get residents as well as businesses involved in a fun orientated event and also generate funds in keeping

the CPF on the go,” said Pat Unsworth, Acting Chairperson of the Uitenhage CPF and coordinator of the Willow Dam Carnival.

“The CPF is self supporting and a voluntary service which is operating extremely well and definitely has had an impact in combating crime.”

The action starts at 09:00 with a 2.5km Family & Pet Fun Walk and registration will be from 07:30 onwards.

The official opening will be at 08:30 followed

by Boerboel trials, a performance by the Caledonian Pipe Band, Tina’s line dancers and the potjiekos competition. The judging of the potjiekos will be at 13:00. There will be various stalls, exhibitions and lots of entertainment like pony rides, Hobi’s little train, Popsi the Clown, a jumping castle and several raffles being drawn in stages.

“Weather permitting, Stu Davidson will

give an aerial display at noon. This should be very exciting.”

In the tug-of-war competition at 11:00 teams from Brandwag High School, Muir College and Daniel Pienaar THS will take on each other under the watchful eye of national tug-ofwar champion Alwyn Nolte.

There will be no entrance fee and the public are invited to support this CPF initiative.

VW rallies to SPCA’s assistance

ore than 80 keen Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) motorcyclists, including their friends and families, rallied together at the weekend in aid of furry four-legged animals being cared for by the Uitenhage SPCA. The bikers gathered at the company’s AutoPavilion on Saturday for the SPCA’s Animal Run – an initiative to raise funds and

collect pet food for the SPCA Uitenhage kennels.

After seeing the Animal Run advertised, three VWSA employees approached the SPCA to offer assistance. They also encouraged fellow VWSA employees and company suppliers to support the cause.

James Rishworth, Angela Sandells and Craig Kennedy together with the VW Community Trust asked VWSA employees for dona-

tions of cash, pet food and blankets. They also rallied other VWSA bikers and their families to join in the procession from the AutoPavilion to the Uitenhage SPCA at Kruisriver, where the generous donations were handed over.

“We were overwhelmed with the support from our colleagues. We managed to raise a total of R3 600 and over 280kg of pet food,” said James Rishworth of VWSA Final Assembly.

Christelle Erasmus (vice-chairperson of Uitenhage SPCA management board) was ecstatic at the response to the call for donations.

“Huge thanks must go to VWSA’s employees for their support of this initiative – it was truly awesome.

“I was amazed at the number of bikes that arrived in support and the donations we received.

“You guys ‘Ama’rock’,” she said.

He encouraged pupils to follow their dreams and to have a goal – something he did when he started up insurance and network marketing company Multisure in the early 2000s.

“Sometimes you have to give up what you are successful at in order to enjoy more success,” he told pupils.

“Things won’t always go according to plan.

Decide on your values. Constantly improve your knowledge about your business and industry.”

“Also be grateful and remember to thank those who played a part in your life, no matter how small.”

After opening its headquarters in Port Elizabeth in 2005, Multisure opened an office in Johannesburg in 2010, and Cape Town late last year.

Plans to open in Durban, Bloemfontein, East London and George were at an advanced stage, said Goodford.

espite the trials awaiting pupils once they leave school, those challenges can be overcome with an entrepreneurial spirit which enables hard workers to become “a Richard Branson in the making”.

This was the message to pupils from advocate-turned-entrepreneur Denton Goodford, whose dream to own his own business after matriculating from Uitenhage High School saw him start up national company Multisure Corporation.

Goodford, who hosted Harvest Christian School Grade 11 girls as part of a Women’s Month initiative, also addressed Grade 12 Uitenhage High learners at a ceremony celebrating their final 40 days of school last week.

Goodford, who grew up in Uitenhage and after studying in Cape Town became a successful state prosecutor, even drove a taxi part time while he furthered his studies before he started up his own practice as an advocate.

“There is no service delivery as the contract for the removal of the bins expired at the end of June 2013. No contractor has been appointed yet by the municipality. The tender to provide bins has only been tabled on August 16th,” said Councillor Pieter Terblanche.

“Most of the transfer sites in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality area are affected by the unavailability of a contract to service them.”

The transfer sites were closed by the directorate of waste disposal and this resulted in

illegal dumping by residents.

“What else should residents do with their waste? I do not blame them as they pay for services not rendered by the municipality.

“Apart from the tender process which will take a while, we are also concerned regarding the areas surrounding the transfer sites which are contaminated with waste and need to be cleared. The safety of residents is also a huge concern as they are intimidated by vagrants at the transfer sites.”

According to Councillor Kenneth Kohl, this matter is a huge concern as the litter picking projects have also been stopped as a result of no funds and the unavailability of trucks. The impact of no service delivery regarding waste removal is also seen next to the R75.

“Residents are paying their rates and taxes and do not want to hear that the municipality doesn’t have money,” said Councillor Kohl.

=A group of 90 children, from College Hill Preparatory School, surprised Dr Jean van Onselen on her 90th birthday (17 Augsut) by congregating on her front lawn to sing happy birthday. They presented her with flowers and balloons for this special occasion. She forms an integral part of College Hill’s history as she is the founding principal of the school which was established in 1962. College Hill, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, was originally housed in the old Riebeek College building, now the municipal clinic in Church Street.

Tablers and Lions join hands in Melodrama The Uitenhage 14 Round Table and the Uitenhage Lions Club have combined to present this year’s melodrama with the theme “Bad Boys” featuring Koos and Frikkie.

In a satiric combined specifically with humour at the upcoming elections, Koos and Frikkie will give their point of view using “no name actors” who are all members of the Service Provider Clubs.

Both a cash bar (plus shooters) and kitchen will be available to satisfy the thirsty and hungry. The show will be at the Moth Hall and carguards will be employed during all the melodrama evenings.

Die draaiboek van ‘n graad 11 leerder van Hoërskool Strelitzia is gekies om verfilm te word en sal op televisie uitgesaai word.

Krischka Strydom se “Why Mom” manuskrip is deur Nab’Ubomi produksies aangewys as een van die twaalf bestes in ‘n kompetisie wat aangebied is vir alle OosKaapse hoërskole.

Die film sal vroeg volgende kwartaal by Streltizia geskiet word.

Leerders en personeel sal daarin speel en Krischka sal self betrokke wees by die maak van die film.

Krischka se prestasies op kunsvlak behels ook ‘n toekenning deur Helen O’Grady drama-akademie vir haar prestasies die afgelope nege jaar. Sy het ook haar graad 4 Trinity sertifikaat in musiek-teorie ontvang.

Buiten die kunste is sy ook ‘n kranige OP-karateka en het die Algoa Bay karateakademie by die 2013 Japan Shotokan nasionale kampioenskappe in Pretoria verteenwoordig. Sy gradeer op 12 Oktober vanjaar vir haar 2de dan swart gordel in karate.

VW’s R30 million sports facility Volkswagen’s PeoplePavilion is a world class sports and recreational facility for its employees in Uitenhage.

olkswagen Group South Africa has opened a world class sports and recreational facility for its employees at the manufacturing factory in Uitenhage.

The R30-million PeoplePavilion, which caters for indoor and outdoor sporting activities, will be used by all Volkswagen employees and their families on any day of the week.

“The PeoplePavilion is not just a building but a platform where all our people can engage each other in a different manner beyond the hierarchical structures.

This world-class facility in terms of structure and quality represents what Volkswagen stands for as a people-oriented organisation,” said the Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa, David Powels.

Gym & clubhouse The facility has a gym which is managed by a qualified Biokineticist and is open to all Volkswagen employees to use for a nominal membership fee.

The gym will also be used for the rehabilitation of injured Volkswagen employees and is equipped with purpos-built gym equipment.

There is also a clubhouse with a licensed bar

and terrace which overlooks the multi-purpose main field that will be used for soccer, rugby and cricket.

The clubhouse has been outsourced to Ashwin Doolabh, a local entrepreneur. Doolabh is one of the local entrepreneurs and has been mentored and coached at the Volkswagen Business Support Centre in Uitenhage.

Indoor sports hall The highlight of PeoplePavilion is its indoor multi-purpose sports hall which is available to employees and local community to hire for family celebrations such as weddings. The hall can also be converted into a 450-seater conference centre.

The multipurpose hall is also fully equipped for indoor sporting activities such as indoor cricket, indoor soccer, volleyball and martial arts. Currently over 1 500 Volkswagen employees (about 30% of the employees in Uitenhage) actively participate in 13 different sporting codes like netball, soccer, cricket, cycling and klawerjas.

“We hope the new facility will attract and motivate more people to participate in different sporting codes that are available. We want PeoplePavilion to be home to our talented sportspeople and their supporters,” said Powels.

The first stage of the 2013 Volkswagen Rally on 19 July can also be watched from the viewing decks of the clubhouse.
