Heavy rains to rescue dam levels? LIZEKA TANDWA

elson Mandela Metropole residents could breathe a sigh of relief as SA Weather Services say the heavy rains this week are expected to boost the levels of dams supplying the metro with water. The levels of these dams have been dwindling, with water restrictions expected in October. Port Elizabeth SA Weather Service (SAWS) spokesperson, Garth Sampson, said although last weekend’s rainfall did not reach the catchment areas, some of the heavy
rains expected in the region until today, would reach most of the catchment areas relieving the dam levels. According to media reports over the weekend, the Municipality would have introduced water restrictions as from yesterday. The municipality indicated that “the restrictions would ensure that they had an adequate water supply, before the predicted 2015 drought, over which the Department of Water and Sanitation has issued warnings.” Nelson Mandela Metropole Municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said although they were encouraged by the rainfall
this week, communities still needed to conserve water to prolong the Metro’s water resources. “By Monday the rain in the major catchment areas had not been significant.” Mniki spoke these words of caution against the backdrop of below average rainfall predictions up to February 2015. “Residents must also note that we are entering a period of high water consumption and therefore the reduction of water consumption is important.” Commenting on possible water restrictions scheduled from today, Mniki said the
proposed water restrictions have not yet been approved by Council. Mniki said the fixing of leakages, which is costing the Municipality millions of rands, was currently under way. Additional contracts were also being put into place to reduce leakages. )Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Standing Committee Chairperson for Safety and Security Thembinkosi Mafana issued a stern warning that motorists would be arrested if they vandalized or removed road signs intended to protect the public from harm during flooding.

Be ready for big U’age braai The National Braai Day Guinness World Record attempt in Uitenhage on Heritage Day (September 24th) had to be postponed as a result of inclement weather. All are now geared towards Sunday, October 26th. “Although we could not braai together as a community, we still did something to the benefit of the less fortunate in our community,” said Angelique Nell from Ubuntu Development Community Solutions, a co-partner in organising the Uitenhage braai world record attempt. With the assistance of the Uitenhage Lions
Club and Round Table 14 Uitenhage, a “Braai for Charity” was held. A total of 30 kg of boerewors and 55 chicken drumsticks were braaiied and a massive chicken pot containing 50kg of chicken was cooked. “The sponsored food was donated to Alida Davids from the Eagle’s Wings Street Children’s Ministries in Uitenhage,” said Nell. Centre offers company for over 60s HEILIE COMBRINCK All mobile persons over the age of 60 years, wishing to enjoy the company of their stalwarts and staying active, can now enjoy socializing at a day care centre in Uitenhage. “It took 39 years since the inceptional meet-
ing during 1975 when the United Rugby Club decided to establish a home for the aged catering for the coloured community, to finally open the centre’s doors,” said Johnny Howard, a founder member of the Uitenhage People’s Welfare Organisation for the Aged (UPWO). According to the current chairperson of the UPWO Day Care Centre, David Japtha, the committee during 2003 decided to purchase a property which would be suitable
for an old age home. “There were different views from the members, but eventually a decision was taken to purchase the property at the corner of Innes and Molteno Streets. “We struggled with the rezoning of the property from a residential to a business property. “Finally everything fell into place and the house is now registered and open as a daycare centre,” said Japtha.

The centre is open during weekdays from 06:00 to 18:00, but will be closed on weekends and holidays. According to Elizabeth Müller, day care centre members will be served with breakfast and lunch and can enjoy an afternoon cup of tea and sandwiches at 16:00. “We are in the process of finalising activities. We are also negotiating with Sister Forbes to visit the centre on a weekly basis to do regular health checks on the day care centre visitors. “We are not subsidized and have to raise funds ourselves. Therefore the daily fee will be R80 which includes meals,” said Müller. The UPWO Day Care Centre committee also requests the assistance of volunteers to assist with the elderly as well as donations of kitchen items, cutlery and furniture. Howard explained that during 1975, the patron of the rugby club, the late Mr Nelson of the Jubilee Hotel, invited a Mr Cupp to assist with the registration in order to get a welfare organisation number. “Dances were held at the hotel as fund-raising events. “In those years Mr George, working at Goodyear at that time, arranged for two ladies from New York to visit the organisation and they donated R62 000,” said Howard. According to him politics later started to surface in meetings as some members were not prepared to accept the channels of communication to get the home established. The present committee consists of David Japtha (chairperson), Elizabeth Müller (secretary), Lorna Welcome (treasurer) with additional members Noél Milborough, Timothy Heynes, Bettie van Sensie, Richard Nell, Mr I Maclean, Mrs S Forbes and Mrs G Adams.

NMMU doctoral student jets off to USA REPORTER

elson Mandela Metropolitan University doctoral student and part-time lecturer, Devandré Boonzaaier from Uitenhage, jetted off to Pennsylvania in the USA last week to present a paper at the 4th Bethlehem Conference on Moravian History and Music. This conference explores Moravian history and music in a worldwide context from the 15th - 20th centuries through lectures, concerts, art, food and drink, in the historic Moravian community of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The conference runs from today until Sunday and includes participants from Boston University, Stanford University, Princeton University and Wake Forest University. Boonzaaier is a part-time lecturer in the NMMU Music Department and a doctoral
student in musicology. His study focuses on the Moravian music heritage in South Africa and his promoters are Dr Alethea de Villiers (NMMU) and Rev. Dr Nola Reed Knouse who is an ordained minister in the Moravian Church and director of the Moravian Music Foundation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Boonzaaier said he had also been invited to form part of a commission which would meet after the conference at the Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem. Invitees to the commission are representatives from all the provinces of the Moravian Unity which include Moravian scholars and clergy from America, Germany, Tanzania, South Africa, West Indies, England and the Netherlands. The goal of the commission is to assist in the writing of a universal curriculum on Moravian topics. Boonzaaier is a member of the Uitenhage Moravian Congregation.

here are only three days left for the 5km Pink Fun Walk in Uitenhage, which will be held in support of breast cancer awareness month (October). The event is organised by Women In Business and they invite the community, corporate teams and sports clubs to participate in the event. “More than twice as many people die from cancer than from Aids, malaria and tuberculosis combined. “The World Health Organization projects that without immediate action, the global number of deaths from cancer will increase
by nearly 80% by 2030, with most occurring in low and middle income countries,” said Lilly de Jongh from Women In Business. All proceeds form the fun walk will be donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). inute nadat ’n munisipale vragmotor deur ses beeste geploeg het ná ’n botsing op die Rooihoogtepad tussen KwaNobuhle en Uitenhage, het ’n slag-orgie begin. Inwoners van Langa, Blikkiesdorp, Gunguluza en KwaNobuhle het met enige skerp ding tot hul beskikking op die toneel toegesak. Eers nadat alles verby was, het die polisie daar aangekom. ’n Verkeersbeampte wat vroeër op die toneel was, het glo die een bees wat nog gelewe het, met ’n doodskoot agter die kop uit sy lyding verlos. “Toe die polisie hier aankom, was die verkeerspolisie baie kwaai met hulle omdat hulle so laat was,” het Mvobo Sigobé, ’n ooggetuie, gesê, “want van die beeste het nog gelewe.” Die munisipale vragmotor het blykbaar teen ’n bakkie op die steilte net voor die “Welkom in Uitenhage”-bord gebots en toe in ’n
groep beeste (waarvan twee glo dragtig was) langs die pad ingejaag. “Daai mense hier, hulle het vinnig met grawe, kapmesse en selfs knipmesse aangehardloop gekom om die bene en koppe te kom haal. Want dáái is baie geld wat nou net op die gras lê,” het Sigobé vertel. ’n Uur later was slegs die borskaste van die ses afgeslagte beeste met stukke pens op die toneel oor. Eers toe die rondloperhonde vir hul reste begin aankom het, het die polisie glo met ’n laaigraaf en vragmotor opgedaag om die laaste dele te verwyder. Ao. Basil Seekoei, polisiewoordvoerder, sê die aantygings dat die polisiebeamptes blykbaar te lank geneem het om na die toneel te gaan, sal ondersoek word. Na bewering het die bestuurder van die vragmotor op die vlug geslaan. Die bestuurder van die bakkie was ook skoonveld. Seekoei sê ’n saak van roekelose en nalatige bestuur sal ondersoek word. Indien ’n klagte oor die polisie se reaksietyd ingedien word, sal ’n interne ondersoek ook geopen word.

Team Zietlow’s World Record Drive attempt officially started on Sunday, 21 September in Nordkapp, Norway at 03:00 (local time) when the Mayor of Honningsvåg, Kristina Hansen pressed the start button of the stopwatch. The Mayor of the Cape Agulhas Municipality, Councillor Richard Mitchell, will press the stop button when the Volkswagen Touareg reaches the southernmost point in Africa at the Cape Agulhas monument in the Agulhas National Park. This was supposed to be non-stop driving (the Touareg would only stop for re-fuelling). The Touareg has been driving through varying temperatures from freezing in Norway to mid-40 degrees Celsius in Sudan. )Team Zietlow posts daily reports on its experiences on its website: www.touareg capetocape.com. It includes a blog with photos and videos detailing each day’s stage. The current position of the Touareg is also shown on a virtual map that is updated every five minutes.

he World Record Drive attempt at driving a Volkswagen Touareg from the northernmost part of Europe in Nordkapp, Norway, to the southernmost part of Africa, Cape Agulhas, covering 17 000 km in under 10 days came to a temporary halt in Tanzania. Rainer Zietlow and co-drivers Marius Biela and Matthias Prillwitz are attempting to set this world record. With this Zietlow is attempting to set his third world record following his two successful world record drives from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska along the “Panamericana” in 11 days and 17 hours as well as a world record drive from Melbourne to St. Petersburg in 17 days and 18 hours. Unfortunately the world record drive had to be interrupted after 6 days, 9 hours, 35 minutes and 13 540 km in Tanzania last Saturday as a result of an accident. According to information posted on the team’s website (http://www.touareg-capetocape.com/home/) on Tuesday, they were in Dar Es Salam and will repair the Touareg as

Die nuut-geopende Bingo Royale Cleary Park doen sy naam gestand, en bied ’n rojale ervaring, aldus Yolande Manuel, direkteur van BOSS Gaming Eastern Cape. Besoekers aan Bingo Royale Cleary Park sal ’n duidelike “wow”-ervaring geniet wanneer hulle die perseel via sekuriteit vir die eerste keer betree. ’n Moderne ronde kroeg met ’n reuse kandelaar as fokuspunt vorm die atmosfeer. “Ons benadering is om te verseker dat besoekers ’n casino-agtige ervaring in die luuksste fasiliteit in die gebied geniet. “Die kleure van die beligting bokant die kroeg kan verander word na gelang van die stemming of geleentheid van die dag. So, vir Valentynsdag sal dit net rooi wees,” sê Manuel. Daar is ’n verhoog voor die kroeg vir lewende vermaak. kan besoekers Bingo speel wanneer die Bingo-saal ook al oop is – eerder as om beperk te word tot spesifieke speeltye aangesien hulle in ’n meer tradisionele Bingoonderneming is. “Dit is die gewilde manier waarop Bingo wêreldwyd gespeel word,” sê sy. Daar is 183 Bingo-terminale op die vloer. “Die nuus oor die unieke ervaring wat Bingo Royale Cleary Park bied, het soos ’n veldbrand deur Port Elizabeth versprei, en daartoe gelei dat ons binnekort nog terminale gaan moet byvoeg om te verseker dat almal steeds soos koninklikes behandel word,” sê sy. Besoekers kan ook soos koninklikes eet by die aangrensende Vinny’s restaurant, nog ’n eerste vir die Noordelike Gebiede. “Die gesellige restaurant is die plek om vriende te ontmoet of informele sakevergaderings te hou,” sê Manuel. Bingo Royale Cleary Park en Vinny’s is oop van 9vm tot laat in die aand. Toegang is gratis. Die naaste deur is die een by die kitskospunte. Daar is hope parkeerplek, aangesien die sentrum omgeveer 1400 parkeerplekke het.
Fokus op sekuriteit Bingo Royale Cleary Park is daartoe verbind om die veiligheid van beide hul besoekers en personeel te verseker. Bykomende beligting is geïnstal-
leer om die hoofparkeerarea te dek, en daar is permanente sekuriteitswagte aan diens in die parkeerarea, in die wandelpad na die bingosaal.
Hulle word bygestaan deur gewapende sekuriteit-reaksievoertuie wat nooit meer as ’n paar minute ver is nie. Waarnemingskameras word ge-
bruik om die wagte by te staan en alle aktiwiteite 24 uur per dag op te neem. Alle personeel word ook opgelei om verdagte optrede te identifiseer
en toepaslik te reageer. Die risiko van roof word verminder met die gebruik van ’n valkluis. Geen sleutels word op die perseel gehou nie.

leary Park is die tuiste van die eerste Vinny's Restaurant in SuidAfrika. Vinny's is ook die eerste restaurant van sy soort in die Noordelike Gebiede, en een van die enigste tradisionele Italiaanse trattorias in Port Elizabeth. “Vinny's is a space where one can put on your 'two tone shoes' and step into 1950's Vegas,” says Renzo Scribante of the Remo's Famiglia group. “It's about the best quality food and drink and an experience to match,” he adds. Daar is 'n aparte spyskaart vir die gesondheidsbewustes, wat muesli, hawermout of 'n vars seisoensvrugteslaai met joghurt en heuning insluit. Middag- en aandete begin met voorgeregte soos Vinny's peri-lewer, Bugsy's vlerkies en The Pablo, wat bestaan uit ses sappige garnale gebraai in knoffelbotter en bedien met suurlemoenwiggies en tartarsous. Nadat hulle hul smaakkliere geprikkel het in die geselskap van goeie vriende in die ontspanne atmosfeer van Vinny's, kan gaste uitsien na die hoofmaal. Pizzas is 'n besliste gunsteling, waar slegs die varsste en beste gehalte bestanddele gebruik word en in 'n houtvuuroond gebak word. Catering for all tastes, the menu is a medley of traditional and modern toppings. “Blue Eyes” is covered with homemade beef mince Bolognese and spicy jalapeno peppers, and for vegetarians there is “Butternut Betty” with butternut, blue cheese, feta and mushrooms. Vinny's kitchen creativity also offers a range of unusual tasty pasta dishes –

Choices range from “Quick Sticks Malone” consisting of two eggs, toast and streaky bacon to “The Full Monty Breakfast” – two eggs, 100g of boerewors, Mamma's baked beans, tomato, mushroom, bacon, chips and toast. Vinny's wouldn't be a true Italian restaurant if it did not offer a breakfast
from traditional spaghetti Bolognese to Joey Zaza, with red wine and tomato braised lamb shank, garden peas, rosemary and tomato tossed in rigatoni pasta. Other main dishes include a choice of chicken (try “Don's Cuzzie”); grills (Big Al's Butcher Board has grown men crying); seafood and gourmet burgers. There is also a special menu for the bambinos.
