The annual Golf Day of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South is scheduled for Thursday, 14 March. This is one of the main fund-raising events of the year for the club. The funds raised are utilised to support a number of local charities in keeping with our objective of assisting the poor, needy and less fortunate in our community. Charities that benefited last year included old age homes, crèches and a number of other NGOs in addition to our annual support for the End Polio campaign. The format is in the form of a 4-ball alliance one score to count. Tee-off times are reserved between 10:30 and 13:00. The cost of a sponsored 4-ball is R1 000 and that of a 2-ball R500. Sponsors will be allowed to display company banners, flags or names on the course or a suitable place at the clubhouse. Dedicated principal retires
“Now it is time to take a long deserved break.”

Marymount re-opened in 1982, Ms Daka joined the staff and was appointed as principal at the school in 2003. The school was absorbed by the Department of Education and registered as a semi-private school in 2002. The success of Ms Daka’s years at Marymount can be attributed to her being a disciplinarian who does not compromise. A plaque portraying the values and what is expected to live by at the school, was unveiled last Friday during a farewell ceremony held in honour of Ms Daka. “I want to thank the Dominican Sisters as they were very supportive through my whole career,” said Ms Daka. When asked how she would spend her days of retirement, she said, “At first I just want to take a break and clear my thoughts. By April I will start thinking of the way forward!”
“It has been a few good 41 years of teaching and I’ve faced and concurred many challenges. Now it is time to take a long deserved break.” These are the words of the principal of Marymount Roman Catholic Secondary School, Ms Nomvuyo Daka, who officially retired last Friday. “She has been a mother figure to all of us. She has dedicated her life to education, strongly maintaining the Catholic ethos of Marymount. Ms Daka will be sadly missed by us all and we wish her well,” said Anita Naidoo, an educator at the school. Ms Daka started her educational career at Little Flower Primary School in 1975 with Sister Albertus in charge of the convent school. When the then revamped and upgraded

The pupils of College Hill managed to collect a total of R3 293 in “brown money” for the Uitenhage SPCA. R20 000 Reward offered by police A reward of up to R20 000 is offered by the Uitenhage police for information that will lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of an accused. This follow an incident where the body a 20 year old woman was discovered by a community member inside the Park Avenue premises of Eastcape Midlands College, on 26 December 2010. “The deceased, Shu-Morney Lindsey Astrid Leeuwskitter, was found strangled with her own belt around her neck. The post mortem held concluded that her cause of
death was strangulation,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The Uitenhage police are appealing to the public to assist them with information pertaining to the murder of Leeuwskitter. Contact the investigating officer, D/Sergeant Jeanne van Wyk on 0074 997 0496.
Clampdown on criminals Police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have made more than 106 arrests and issued a total of 54 fines over the past weekend until the early hours of Monday morning, 4 March. Arrests made vary from murder, rape, the illegal possession of drugs, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, driving under the influence of liquor and burglary at residential premises. The Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ruphuz Pandela and Station Commanders at their respective stations are focused and serious to effectively address current crime tendencies in their policing areas. Pirates baseball getting stronger Pirates Baseball Club has reopened its doors after 15 years and is quickly becoming a strength in Eastern Province baseball again like in the 80’s and 90’s. This coming weekend will be its opening day and all fixtures in EP will be played on the club’s newly designed baseball park in Lower Market Street, Uitenhage. There will be an EP U12 team playing against an EP U14 team as a curtain raiser and some junior T-ball will be played in the morning. Clubs like Pirates, Redsox, Park Tigers, Gelvandale Aces and VW will be playing during the day. Pirates are practising on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 17:00 till 19:00 all new and old players are welcome to join. All Pirates games will be played at the local fields until mid-April.
