U’hage eye clinic wins award HEILIE COMBRINCK
T
he Uitenhage Eye Clinic was one of eight projects selected nationally in receiving a gold Impumelelo award for excellent service delivery which improved the quality of life of the poor in South Africa. “In 2011 we provided cataract surgery to 200 people. By July 2012, 166 patients had received cataract surgery and we are aiming to perform 300 operations by the end of 2012,” said Dr William Mapham, Ophthalmology Medical Officer at the Uitenhage Eye Clinic which is part of the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. The Eye Clinic offers a comprehensive eye care service to the surround-
ing community as well as cataract surgery which restores people’s sight. “As the cataract becomes severe patients become blind and can only tell the difference between light and dark. Patients receive operations at Uitenhage Hospital to remove the cataract and replace it with an artificial intraocular. This operation takes less than 30 minutes,” said Dr Mapham. “Patients then return to their communities being able to see and regain their place in society.” Statistics from the Uitenhage Eye Clinic show that 65% of operations are on women. It is of interest to note that this clinic was started by a woman and is run almost completely by female staff. “Congratulations to the whole team for their passion, efforts and taking up the challenges. We are
proud of you and of this achievement,” said Matron Marilyn Klassen Assistant Director Nursing at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. “This shows what can be achieved when you are passionate about the service you provide.” According to Dr Mapham, the success of the Uitenhage Eye Clinic is replicable. “Having the support from a Provincial Hospital, building the clinic up from an outreach service to a comprehensive eye care service to employing full time staff and running it efficiently could be copied by other areas in the Eastern Cape or indeed other provinces.” ;Sr Nomakhosi Maramncwa and Sr Valerie Säfers from the Uitenhage Eye Clinic showing the award. Young at heart sportswoman awarded HEILIE COMBRINCK Age is nothing but a number for the young at heart netball coach and umpire from Uitenhage who recieved special recognition for her dedication towards the development of sport in the community. Stephney Loots (71) was nomi-

70 years of age or older. “Netball is my first love. Since my childhood days I enjoyed playing the game,” said Loots who still is a familiar face umpiring at netball matches. She has coached netball at most of the primary as well as high schools in the northern areas of Uitenhage. She even visited farm schools in the region to coach this ball game. For the past seven years she has been involved in the development of netball at the three Eastcape Midlands College campusses. “In my younger days I was sort of an all-rounder on the court, but mostly enjoyed playing centre.” Loots played for the then Caledonian Netball Club and was also selected for the EP netball squad. She later qualified as an EP umpire as well as selector. Sport runs in the family as one of her grand daughters, Gillian Forbes, plays EP cricket as well as EP Hockey and also captains the NMMU hockey team. “Exercise is very important. Prior to every match I do stretching, otherwise I try to keep fit by walking or doing my own exercising at home. I also love dancing and do my own tricks on the dance floor, why not ... life is there to enjoy.” She currently is working on a concept to start an exercise club for the aged in the Rosedale area.

Help change life for the better People from Uitenhage and Despatch are known for their eagerness in supporting campaigns aimed in making a true difference in the community. This is obvious in the various local businesses where employees currently are seen with pink peaks in support of Breast Cancer awareness month which is held during October. In supporting this campaign and specifically the local Reach For Recovery breast cancer support group, the UD News through the assistance of its advertisers would like to contribute to the group’s financial strength. Let’s join hands and support this venture in making a difference in the lives of those suffering from breast cancer. Together we can change life for the good!
Every woman who goes through the experience of breast surgery finds that she has to come to terms with a new reality. There is fear, anger and apprehension about what the future will hold. A woman needs to talk about her feelings and her fears. This is where the volunteers from Reach for Recovery play a major role as they are available to help women at this stage. Reach for Recovery is a group of volunteer women who have undergone surgery as a result of breast cancer and who have received thorough training to visit breast cancer patients in hospital or at home.
These volunteers visit breast cancer patients, taking them complimentary gift bags which include informative literature, a soft prosthesis if needed, small pillow for under the arm and carry bag for a patient’s drain. It is a non-profit making organisation and although it operates in close conjunction with the Cancer Association of South Africa, it does not receive official or designated funding from Cansa or any other source. Reach for Recovery has to raise funds on its own and rely on donations to meet the costs and all their services are free of charge. Enquiries: Estelle Botha at 0041 966 1093. .

Carnival of roses at Addo
Gardening enthusiasts and rose lovers will flock to the Sundays River Valley this weekend to enjoy the spectacular display of thousands of roses at Addo. It will be the Sunday’s River Women’s Institute’s 29th annual Addo Rose & Garden Show hosted on Saturday and Sunday at the Valentine Hall with its tranquil country surrounds. Festivities start tomorrow evening with a cheese and wine event under the stars and the opportunity to view the rose exhibition. Some highlights of this year’s show include the Algoa FM charity garden challenge, live music, Rose Café, food village, beer garden, childrens interactive outdoor fun, the
speakers corner with informative gardening related talks and a wide variety of craft and produce stalls. The aim of the show is to raise funds for the upliftment of communities in the valley. This year the focus will also be on animal outreaches. Some of the charities supported annually by the SRWI include bursaries to schools, Langbos Creche, Sundays River Valley Hospital, Fitzpatrick Library and animal outreaches. The show will be open to the public on Saturday from 08:00 till 18:00 and Sunday 08:00 till 17:00. VW ‘Think Blue’ for penguins In a massive show of support for National Marine Week, more than 110 Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) employees participated in volunteer action at the South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) at Cape Recife the past weekend. In line with VWSA’s ‘Think Blue’ environment initiative they identified SAMREC as the beneficiary of the programme’s environment focus for 2012. SAMREC, a non-profit organisation, cares for sick or injured African penguins as a result of their vulnerability. Their work is vital, particularly as St Croix Island which is the largest penguin breeding colony in the world, thus SAMREC is a marine rehabilitation facility of global importance. Volkswagen volunteers have extended edu-

cational facilities at SAMREC by creating an interactive trail and open-air classroom for learners. The volunteers also carried out renovations to the penguin general ward at the facility. A five kilometre stretch of beach was also cleaned-up as part of the initiative. In addition to the volunteer action, VWSA made a donation towards the SeaSchool programme that focuses on introducing the sea, and its creatures, to learners from disadvantaged communities. VWSA also adopted 15 penguins in the SAMREC Rehabilitation Programme. The volunteer work carried out by Volkswagen Volunteers marks the seventh in a series of volunteer activations that VWSA has initiated as part of the ‘Show of Hands’ employee volunteer programme.

On completion after 3 years a student will be able to study further towards the following careers: •Nursing •Community Care Workers •Social Work •Physiotherapy •Occupational Therapy •Counselling •Occupational Health and Safety •Practicing in clinics and health support services •Supporting the Department of Health (DoH) community programmes. Primary Health will be offered at our newest campus based in Uitenhage, Brickfields Road campus and applications are accepted already. The registration for 2013 for all other programmes for National Certificate Vocational (NCV) is now open at the various campuses. Our Report 191 programmes (N-courses) offered on part-time basis on trimester basis (engineering programmes) and semester basis (business programmes) will also be open for potential students in January 2013 and the public will be notified on time. The School of Occupational Training also offers exciting opportunities for unemployed youth through computer skills programmes namely; Bookkeeping, Early Childhood Development, New Venture Creation, computer related training which is on the business skills and on the engineering skills there is Welding, Mechatronics, Motor Mechanic etc. SBursaries are available to qualifying students. This week the Property Poser experts assist a reader whose neighbour’s stormwater runs across his property. The reader does not indicate if the neighbour did anything to divert the water onto his property or whether it just appears to be the natural flow of the water. He would like to know what his neighbour’s obligations are and whether the National Building Regulations and Standards Act is still in force. It is not difficult to see why this issue is becoming more and more problematic with open space becoming increasingly scarce and properties being situated more closely together, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Some time ago, a Supreme Court of Appeal decision held that the owner of a lower-lying property is only obliged to receive naturally flowing water from a higher one.” Du Toit says this means that only the flow that would have occurred before the properties were developed would be permitted to continue. “The Act to which the reader refers supports this ruling and compels the owner of the low-lying erf to accept the runoff, provided the water does not flow through in an excessive and concentrated manner.” If the owner of the higher-lying property wanted to oblige the other to accept stormwater, Du Toit says he or she would have to prove that the water would have flowed on to the lower-lying property even if there were no buildings and the ground contours were not interfered with. This may be a rather heavy burden of proof as the situation is not always clear, resulting in many an argument between neighbours, says Du Toit. The reader would do well to consult his local municipal regulations, which generally include provisions obliging all owners to discharge their stormwater on to a public street if possible, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in the metro. “Then, only where this is not practically possible, must the owner of the lower-lying property accept the runoff. The practical route would therefore be to address the situation and let the neighbour know that the stormwater is causing a problem.” Unless the neighbour could prove that the water would have flowed over the reader’s property in any event, he or she would have to look for another solution or provide assistance to the affected party by installing a drain, says Vermaak. “It may help to ask the local authority to conduct an inspection of the situation.” Vermaak says the more extreme and costly route would be to apply for an interdict against the neighbour, compelling him or her to stop allowing the water to run across the other property. “As is often the case, litigation of any sort should be a last resort as it may turn out to be an even more costly option than implementing a solution.” To ask a property related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.

Rally action in J’Bay

The Fountains Mall regional rally championship returns to Jeffreys Bay on Saturday with stages at the parking area where spectators can view the drivers performing with precision and accuracy. Supporting events include go-karts, drifting and displays which will keep the spectators entertained. The service park will also be at the Mall and open for the public to view the cars being serviced between stages. Entry to the Fountains Mall Rally is free and an ideal outing for the family and motor sport enthusiasts. Rally vehicles and tar only competitors will compete for fastest stage times around the Fountains parking area, Blue waters and the Sands complex, the Gabriel Jewellers stage. Fast gravel stages with spectator viewing will take place past Jubilee Estates and Lombardini Road. These will be closed to the public while stages are in progress.
The S20 open class will be a close contest between Brian & Gary Heine in a Datsun SSS Coupe National rally built vehicle, Rikus Smit and Johan Viljoen driving VW Golf 2 litre’s and Nico Smit with Navigator John Wright competing in a VW Polo. Neels and Jan Vosloo could spoil the party with winning stage times competing in a National specification, well prepared Nissan Sentra. The regional RA5 VW Junior rally team will be a close contest between the front runners of Andrew Heine, Jouwert Van Der Walt and Ross Bartle all competing in Volkswagen Motor Sport specification Citi golfs. Ford fans will not be disappointed with Ford Escorts of Iddo Steyn, JP Van Zyl and Ron Scott with respective navigators which include the experienced Mark Irvine. The rally starts at 09:00 and will end at Fountains Mall in the late afternoon with a final tar stage and prize giving inside the mall.

Baseball fans are in for a real treat as the third day of the South African Masters Baseball Association’s inter-provincial tournament “hits–off” today. Baseball games are played on all three baseball diamonds adjoined to the Despatch Rugby Club and the planned fixtures for the day are as follows: •At 08:30 Eastern Province B takes on Gauteng B (Cfield) •In the veterans division it is EP Vets vs WP Vets at 10:30 (B-field) •At 12:30 EP A-side take on WP A at the main diamond located on the Despatch Rugby Club field. •The main game to complete the days proceedings is at 18:30 when EP Juniors will put the challenge to WP under lights and this promises to be a cracker. The final of the tournament will be played on Saturday, with former Springbok rugbyplayer Adri Geldenhuys throwing the first pitch at 09:00. The awarded Despatch Primary school choir will sing the national anthem prior to the final game at 08:50. There will also be a short Ryushin-kan karate demonstration by Zanthus Lungisa at 08:40. The public are invited to come along and watch how the exciting game of baseball is played as the 20th Inter – Provincial SAMBA tournament comes to a close. The SAMBA prize giving and a baseball reunion will follow the final with a beer fest as the afternoon comes to a close. Auto expo boost for Bay The SA Automotive Week, the
only dedicated automotive components industry showcase in South Africa, is hosted at the new Boardwalk convention centre until Friday. With the international and local interest in the 2012 edition, a 10 000 square metres venue was needed to host the tradeshow. Over 300 exhibitors are expect-
ed to be showcasing their products and equipment. There will be delegations from Thailand, China, the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe and the United States, while individuals from a number of other countries have also registered, according to Binning. A 270-square-metres Coega IDZ pavilion will be one of the highlights of the expo.
