he Winter Bash is a project being held in Uitenhage, when autumn welcomes winter. These months are known for icy cold conditions and the temperature dropping close to zero degrees Celsius. Alida Davis of the Underprivileged Children’s Ministry and her helpers departed at 03:00 last Saturday morning to visit the homeless children of the streets. The Ministry’s helpers included members from Ubuntu Community Development Solutions (UCDS), Women in Business, Uitenhage 14 Round Table, Rotary Club of Uitenhage South and the Uitenhage Lions Club who all provide a service to the local community. According to Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club, the time is of importance as the ‘flight or fight” people of the community are at peace then.

“They are overseen by their ‘guards’ who take turns to keep a watchful eye for threats that include their constant companions of hunger and the cold weather that is the ultimate threat,” said Denis Murphy. Davis and helpers dished out hot meals, blankets and clothing to both the elderly and mainly the very young. In many cases these included children under six whose roof consists of the stars and their beds a pavement. The Ministry serves approximately 3 000 people per month with food and clothing and in turn is totally dependent on the community and local business for donations and assistance. A word of thanks to Jacky Sharp of the Willow Dam Garden Centre whose presence contributed to a easing the plight of those in need on the night of four degrees Celsius.

Rosedale’s waterless weeks CANDICE BEZUIDENHOUT

t has been more than a month that certain homes in the Rosedale area have occasionally been without water. Residents are furious and daily chores are left undone as the water gets cut off at any time of the day without a warning or explanation from the municipality. “We thought that there was just a minor problem with the pipes and the municipality would have it sorted out in no time,” said Corene Bezuidenhout, a resident of Cygnet Street, Rosedale “However, this continued for weeks on end and to this day, no explanation has been given to the public or a warning as to when the water would get cut off.” The affected streets include: Cygnet, Heron and Tinktinkie Streets as well as a few streets

Dam cannot reach the Rosedale reservoir and residents are left without water. “The reason why the area still receives very small streams of water at times is that the reservoir in Fairbridge Heights is linked to the one in Rosedale,” the official said. “We expect to have the pump fixed very soon. “We are confident that the improvements being made at the purification system are for the better,” he added. New traffic circle in busy road HEILIE COMBRINCK Numerous collisions and fatal accidents recorded at the intersection of North Street and Graaff Reinet Road in Uitenhage necessitated action. This resulted in plans to construct a traffic calming circle at this intersection. “Traffic counts were done during the morning, midday and afternoon and the midday counts were done to take cognizance of the traffic that egresses out of North Street when schools come out,” said Councillor Pieter Terblanche from Ward 51, Uitenhage. “The proposal, after a detailed survey and analysis, was to upgrade the intersection to a traffic circle. The circle will reduce speeds, especially from the north-east approach as motorists enter Uitenhage from Kirkwood.” Raised pedestrian crossings are recommended on all approaches to decrease the operating speed. These will have built in solar powered flashing LED lights. There will also be new sidewalks, and warning signs regarding the new traffic circle will be erected. The landscaping of the traffic circle island centre will include stones. Construction wil start soon and will be completed within four weeks.

Le Roux is part of the South African baseball team which will participate in the u.15 Baseball World Cup in La Paz, Mexico, from 31st July till 10th August 2014. A total of 18 countries will compete. The South Africans will have to compete in Group B against USA, Japan, Panama, Germany and New Zealand. The South African Baseball Union selectors spotted Le Roux during the recently held u.15 baseball nationals held in Durban. They chose him as the SA u.15 pitcher. “Dylan performed remarkably well at the tournament, especially batting. He hit two home-runs and was selected out of 210 boys to tour with the national side,” said Terrence Gouws from the Madiba Bay Baseball Association. Rock chick Suzi Quatro to perform in Bay Suzi Quatro, the first female bass player to become a major rock star will be heading to the Bay late October to perform at The Boardwalk. The legendary Suzi Quatro has sold over 50 million albums and will be performing in Port Elizabeth as part of her 50th Anniversary World Tour. She will be celebrating her half century in music business with this world tour. In the 1970s, Quatro scored a trail of number one hits such as She’s in love with You, 48 Crash, Can the Can and Devil Gate Drive. Her last visit to South Africa was in the early eighties. Addo birding weekend at Addo

his year festival goers are in for a treat as the three dynamic and vivacious young ladies, Tarryn Lamb, Axene Chaberski-Loubser and Tamsyn Maker, make their way on to the wild Windhoek Stage for the first time at the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees.

The girls have been hard at work creating a body of work that was released as a thirteentrack, Mark Deling-produced debut album. Titled Strong, BlackByrd’s debut album, like “All For Me”, is filled with real emotion, powerful lyrics and a level of genuine spirituality that’s as rare as their combined pool of talent.

Blackbyrd will be performing on Sunday, June 29 at 13:00 in the afternoon followed by Elvis Blue and Mango Groove. Tickets for adults are R100, which includes access to the Wildsfees show grounds consisting of some of the biggest expos in the Eastern Cape and over 300 specialist stalls.

Avid birders should not delay in making their bookings for the Sasol Addo Birding Weekend which will be held in Addo Elephant National Park from 31 October – 2 November. Organised by the SANParks Honorary Rangers at Addo, participants will have a choice of taking part in different excursions. Birders will join groups birding in different areas of the ecologically diverse Addo Elephant National Park. Excursions include a trip through the Nyathi area of the Park, which is an exclusive concession area; lazily float up the Sundays River on a ferry spotting different species of kingfishers and water fowl or take a ride through Addo game viewing area and see parts of Addo that are not open to the general public. The weekend starts on Friday evening with a get-together and ends with a venison potjie on Saturday evening. Sasol has provided sponsorship for logistics and lucky draw prizes with Stretton’s Gin being the other main sponsors. )Bookings for the birding weekend close on 25 August 2014. Train race held from PE to U’hage REPORTER

HE man vs machine race concept is back in the Metro after an absence of 10 years. This time en route to Uitenhage.

The inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race, based on the very popular Great Train Race, departs from the Port Elizabeth station on Sunday, July 27. The Great Train Race, which was held from 1980 to 2004, used to be the city’s greatest corporate team-building event when hundreds of teams challenged the Apple Express train. The new look Train Race, introduced by Zports in conjunction with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, will see teams of seven runners taking on a Metro Rail train between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage - a distance of approximately 40km.

“This is to become the first major sporting event to include all communities of Nelson Mandela Bay and incorporate the three major towns which make up our Metro: Port Elizabeth, Despatch and Uitenhage,” said Train Race director Mike Zoetmulder of Zports.. “This is something we’ve been planning since 2009 and we are excited that this year we’re able to get this event back on to the annual calendar for Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Zoetmulder. OP Koerante publications,which include the UD News, PE Express, PE Express Indaba as well as Die Burger are the print media sponsors of the race. “We believe we’ve created a fantastic and sustainable event which has four categories of entry to cater for the corporate, social, club and school teams,” said Zoetmulder. The 2014 Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race is limited to just 300 teams and is expected to sell

out before race day on July 27. Spectator tickets are also available on the train which will be racing the teams in what is expected to be a closely fought race which could take the winning team around two hours to complete. Team entry fees start at R350 per 70-person team with spectator train tickets only R50 for a return ticket. The inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race will be supporting Love Story, an NPO founded in 2012 that runs a variety of community upliftment projects across Nelson Mandela Bay. The NPO exists to restore hope and love to those who are forgotten and destitute. “NMBT supports the return of the

Train Race concept as unique attractions and activities have great importance to market the destination,” NMBT chief executive officer Mandlakazi Skefile said. “We welcome the idea of the event as it would continue to promote the region’s status as a popular sporting destination.” Entry and information for the event are available on www.nmbTrainRace.co.za. Mountain bike challenge Mountain bikers of all fitness levels can enjoy this year’s Fish River Sun Mountain Bike challenge taking place from Saturday, June 14 until Monday, June 16.
