Professor Jonathan Jansen, rektor van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat, het verlede week nie geskroom om die Oos-Kaapse onderwysdepartement kaalvuis in te klim nie. Tot die howe moet ingryp.” Met sy skolebesoeke het hy nie geskroom om sy sê te sê oor swak funksionerende skole nie. “Dis wanneer die media nie genooi word nie, dat ek gaan kyk na skole reg oor die land – Soweto, plattelandse skole en vele meer. Daar sien ’n mens die skool kom sommer 10:00 uit, wanneer die matrieks huis toe gaan.” Hy het volgehou dit is nie noodwendig ’n gebrek aan hulpbronne wat die opvoeding van leerders kortwiek nie. Dit gaan ook nie net oor die vermoë van ’n skool nie. “Dit is die regte ingesteldheid, die onderwysers se houding. Ons het ’n regering nodig wat wérklik omgee oor die lot van die armstes in ons skole.” Tydens sy toesprake het hy tussen die leerders geloop en grappies ge-

Police in Kwanobuhle are seeking the next of kin or relatives of a woman who was fatally injured in a motor collision. According to police information report, the woman aged between 45-50 years was walking in Bucwa Street on the 3rd July 2012 at about 19:35 when she was allegedly hit by a minibus taxi. She died before any medical assistance could be rendered. A toddler (boy) aged about 2 years old was found wandering not far from the accident scene. New rules on the river Making your way down to the river to lauch your boat, you nowadays need to not only check whether you have your fishing gear and refreshments, but double check whether you have all the necessary documentation as well. “It is noted that many boat owners and visitors still take their boats on to the river without the necessary registration documents, including certificate of fitness (COF), skippers licences and the valid licence stickers issued by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality,” said Maggie Mann from Addo Gateway Lodge. Amaroks help to combat rhino poaching

It’s a long and steep road to eliminate the rhino poaching crisis, but the more support the Wilderness Foundation’s Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative receives the more hope there is! Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles donated six VW Amarok bakkies to the initiative and to date, the vehicles have travelled almost 300 000 kilometres and have been used in a large number of successful antipoaching activities. “Owing to the security risk, we can’t offer detailed information on where the vehicles have been and what they have been used for,” says Wilderness Foundation’s Conservation director, Matthew Norval. “However, we can confirm that the vehicles have been part of a coordinated anti-poaching strategy which has led to a number of successful arrests and convictions.”

Forever Wild works together with the SAPS Hawks Rhino Unit as well as a number of other conservation agencies which have developed a proactive approach to the poaching crisis. “Rather than being reactive, the Amaroks are deployed as part of a preventative plan based on intelligence gathered in the field,” says Norval. The Amaroks have also been utilised in a number of rhino notching exercises. The notching is imperative for gathering rhino DNA, and for being able to identify individual animals for census purposes. The majority of the successful rhino-poaching convictions were based on DNA evidence. “The vehicles have allowed team members to access difficult roads, and have been used for additional fence patrols and security measures.

Visit Addo elephant park for free There are still two days left to visit Addo Elephant National Park for free in celebration of SA National Parks Week. All South African residents are granted free access to most national parks for day visits during the course of the week (until tomorrow). Visitors should present a valid identity document on arrival to claim their free access. Young persons under the age of 16 will be allowed free access without the requirement of proof of

identity. Free access does not include any guided activities or access via pre-paid organised tours. According to SANParks Acting Head of Communications: Paul Daphne “Environmental education and protection is the responsibility of everyone, not just a privileged few.” As part of SA National Parks Week, Addo Elephant National Park’s conservation department will host various community and school

‘Cut’ the risk and be safely circumcised TB/HIV Care Association (THCA) has partnered with the Eastern Cape Department of Health to address problems related to male circumcision as well as circumcision as a means to reduce the risk of contracting HIV. “We have implemented campaigns which include free HIV counselling and testing as well as an open day and a medical male circumcision camp (MMC). MMC holds many benefits, which includes reducing the risk of males contracting HIV by 60%,” said Nicole Draai, Community Mobilisation Co-ordinator: TB/HIVCare Association. THCA in association with the EC DOH and other partner NGO’s will be

mobilising the communities of KwaNobuhle from 17-28 September through a door-to-door campaign. The actual MMC camp will be taking place at Laetitia Bam Community Clinic in Kwanobuhle on Saturday, 22 September. “The aim of our organisation is to work towards a TB and HIV free community. We want to create awareness about this topic and encourage males to ‘cut’ the risk and be safely circumcised,” said Draai. SThe following services will also be made available free of charge: HIV counselling and testing, STI screening, TB screening, Blood pressure tests, Blood sugar tests.

Millions raised on Casual Day Schools, companies and individuals from across the country revealed their inner sailors, captains, mermaids and pirates to raise funds for persons with disabilities at this year’s Casual Day. It is the biggest fundraising project and drive for support for persons with disabilities in South Africa. According to the organisers, as of the end of last Friday a total of R3.8 million has been raised! This amount is more than what was raised in 2011 at this time. The total amount raised will only be determined at a later stage.

Life skills camp for boys Adventure often leads to life-changing memories and this is what Ignite Ministries has in mind with their tent camp on the outskirts of Uitenhage exclusively for high school boys. According to Arno De Smidt from Ignite Ministries, they are currently operating in six local schools where they mainly present life skills and aim to train, develop and equip young people to live out their giftings. “We are planning a Young Men Ignite Conference for local high school boys with the aim to impart into their lives that they have an important role to fulfil in society,” said De Smidt. “These young men will one day become the leaders and fathers of their own families and need to take their rightful place based on good values and principles.” All interested boys between the ages of 13 and 19 years are invited. All they need to bring are R50, tents and a braai pack. There will be tents available for those who do not have a tent. The tent camp will be held from 21-23 September at The Memory Factory @ Die Feesterrein in Verwoerd Drive. Young men may start pitching their tents as from 15:00 on the Friday and the programme kicks-off at 19:00 and ends the Sunday at 11:00. New landlord changes old lease A reader has approached the Property Poser experts with a few problems, including the manner in which her landlord has dealt with her deposit. The tenant writes that she has been renting a residential property for the past two years. In terms of her original lease agreement, she had to pay a deposit of R3 700 along with a key deposit of R200 and would not receive interest upon refund of the deposit. At some stage the original landlord merged into another company, which simultaneously increased the monthly rental due. The reader states that when she did not agree to this increase, she received a letter of demand for the outstanding amount. The new landlord also insisted that she sign a new lease agreement, which she never did. When she requested a statement of account of how her deposit had been invested, the lessee was told that no interest had accrued, since it was not agreed upon in the original lease agreement. Having had enough, the reader has given the landlord two months’ notice to terminate the lease. The company has indicated that she will be refunded her deposit only, less the amount claimed in the letter of demand. The reader has also been denied her key deposit and told to approach the previous landlord regarding a refund of this and any interest earned. According to Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay, the Rental Housing Act states that “the landlord may require a tenant, before moving into the dwelling, to pay a deposit which, at the time, may not exceed an amount equivalent to an amount specified in the agreement or otherwise agreed to between the par-

ties”. As far as interest on the deposit is concerned, Du Toit says the Act determines that the landlord must invest the deposit in an interest-bearing account with a financial institution. “The landlord must pay the tenant interest at a rate that may not be less than the rate applicable to a savings account with a bank.” In this regard, the provisions of the Act will override the contract, as the former stipulates that the provision may not be waived by the landlord or tenant, says Du Toit. “Furthermore, the Act states that when the lease expires, the landlord may apply the deposit and interest towards the payment of all amounts for which the tenant is liable.” Du Toit says this includes the reasonable cost of repairing damage to the dwelling and the cost of replacing lost keys.

Transnet break Gamble’s night relay winning streak The Transnet men’s running team broke previously unbeaten Gamble Pharmacy’s six-time winning streak, and destroyed the course record with a winning time of 1:06:16 in the final 2012 event of the Investec Night Relay. Merrell’s ladies sealed their 2012 unbeaten status in the women’s category, whilst Transnet runners team 1 was the fastest mixed team over the 21km course. “We are delighted with the way the Investec Night Series turned out. It was a resounding success and we believe that all those taking part, as well as their supporters had a great time,” said Andy Vogel, regional manager of Investec Wealth & Investment. Each month, the organisers of the relay have selected a charity to benefit from it. This is the first year Investec has sponsored the event as naming sponsor. It has been recognised as a key teambuilding event in the local business community.

Exciting canoe marathon The unique blend of guaranteed water releases, exciting rapids and weirs and warm Karoo hospitality makes the Hansa Fish Canoe Marathon an event of choice for many paddlers. The 31st edition of this canoe marathon in Cradock will be held on 5 and 6 October. The event this year will host the SA K1 river championships, the 18th time in 28-years since the first national river champs was awarded to the race in 1984. Canoeing South Africa has once again decided that the Hansa Fish is the best and fairest event to host the prestige national river title decider. This year the Hansa Fish will wrap up with another of its popular music concerts at the sports complex, featuring Ashtray Electric and Lonehill Estate on the Friday night and GoodLuck and Pascal & Pearce on the Saturday.
