Vehicle crimes on the increase UD REPORTER

OLICE in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage and Kamesh have raised concerns regarding the sudden increase in vehicle crimes in their respective policing precincts. “It appears that in KwaNobuhle and Kamesh, vehicle owners are getting hijacked in their driveways at home,” said police spokesperson Lt Col Priscilla Naidu. Reports regarding the modus operandi of hijackers indicated that suspects, usually 3 to 4 men, will knock on the door of a house and when it is opened, they rush in brandishing firearms. Occupants are held at gunpoint and only the vehicle keys are taken. “Volkswagen vehicles, especially Polo’s are mostly targeted.” Vehicle owners/drivers are urged to take note of their surroundings. If you are returning home late at night, circle and scan the area quickly for any suspicious vehicle/s parked near your house. Keep an eye open for suspicious looking person/s lingering outside. “If you are not trusting the situation rather drive away and report your suspicions to the police. “Also do not open your doors at

Donate blood at fuel station “A similar blood drive was held at Engen during 2011 where 109 people donated blood. This year, the target will be 100 units again, but this can only be achieved with the support, effort and commitment from the Uitenhage community and businesses,” said Maryke Harris, Public Relations Practitioner, South African National Blood Service in Port Elizabeth. Engen Penford Centre will be sponsoring the donor refreshments, as a small way of saying thank you to blood donors. Bay FM will keep the public informed throughout the day and many lucky draw prizes will be up for grabs. Blood donors can donate blood as often as every 56 days, must be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh 50kg or more, lead a safe and healthy lifestyle and have had a good meal at least 4 hours prior to donating. “We rely on your support to achieve the target of collecting 100 units and thereby helping to save lives!” said Harris. Street parade held during carnival Bands, choirs, people with funny or Rio style costumes and clowns are invited to participate in a street parade which will be held during the forthcoming Uitenhage Street Carnival. It will be the Rotary Club of Uitenhage’s 25th edition of this annual festive event. “We invite the community of Uitenhage to join in the fun and excitement of the carnival with lots of entertainment, stalls, music and special events for kids in a safe environment,” said Eurika Greeff, president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage. The entertainment will include musicians, local talent, dancers and performers. A street parade
is planned for Saturday, 1st December with the highlight of the event the switching on of the festive lights on the Saturday evening. The Rotary Club of Uitenhage remains the main organising body for the event, with the support of the Nelson Mandela Metro and their supporting divisions such as traffic, disaster management, EMS, safety and security and also the SAPS. A street plan with all activities and affected areas will also be made available closer to the carnival. Arielle ontwerpe in San Francisco op loopplank
’n Gulde geleentheid het ook Arielle te beurt geval om voor die aanvang van die kompetisie meestersontwerpklasse by te woon, wat deur bekende Franse en Amerikaanse ontwerpers aangebied word. “Ek is ongelooflik dankbaar teenoor prof. Derrick Swartz, vise-kanselier van NMMU, dr. Nico Jooste, direkteur van die NMMU se internasionale kantoor sowel as Deon Saayman van Mohair Suid-Afrika. Hulle het dit vir my moontlik gemaak om hierdie eenkeer in ’n leeftyd droom-geleentheid by te kan woon,” het Arielle gesê. Na afloop van die kompetisie sal Arielle die California State University in Monterey Bay besoek. “My filosofie in die lewe is, maak nie saak wat nie, gee net jou heel beste en wees getrou aan jouself. Dit is die beste.”

Dit is eg OosKaaps en veelsydig as dit kom by ontwerp. Dele van my sybokhaarontwerp is met ’n masjien gebrei en vir ’n besonderse effek van dimensie het ek hier en daar steke laat val. Ander dele van dié uitrusting het ek self met my ouma se breipenne gebrei!” Volgens Arielle is die veeragtige swart uitrusting juis om individualisme en vryheid uit te beeld.

Lid van grapjasgroep sterf HEILIE COMBRINCK Die talentvolle grapjasgroep Organised Chaos betreur die afsterwe van een van hulle lede, Arthur van der Merwe (41). “Hy het geleef vir drama en was ’n inspirasie vir ons. Arthur is onvervangbaar en ons sal nou sy nalatenskap uitleef in die groep,” het Gerard Klerk een van Organised Chaos se lede gesê. Volgens Klerk, ‘n jarelange vriend van Van der Merwe, was hy ’n erge asmalyer en diabeet en dit het uiteindelik sy lewe ge-eis. “Sy humorsin was ongeloof-

Volgens Klerk het Van der Merwe ’n ideaal gehad om eendag ‘n maaltyd vir behoeftiges in Gerald Smith voor te sit. “Organised Chaos beplan om hierdie droom van Arthur, ter herinnering aan hom, eendag uit te voer,” sê Klerk. Van der Merwe word oorleef deur sy vrou Cecelia en hulle dogter Jerodene.

Backyard dwellers The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in partnership with Statistics South Africa will conduct a registration drive for backyard shack dwellers across the city from November this year. The launch of the backyard shack dwellers registration drive took place in October at the Babs Madlakane hall in KwaNobuhle. To encourage ownership of the programme and to create jobs the municipality through the various ward councillor’s offices selected five people per ward to be field workers. This process is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme to facilitate job creation and skills development for community members within projects in their specific areas. According to municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron, the registration drive will include a head count of all the backyard shack dwellers in the city, of which the information will be fed into a database for the Municipality’s Human Settlement Directorate to determine the exact amount of people who are still in need of low cost housing.
Skoolnuus | School News U’hage High learner scoops scholarship award Uitenhage High deputy head girl, Orcilla Howard, won a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University scholarship and several other prizes at a recently held prestige matric of the year competition. With emphasis not only on academics, judges looked for pupils who are well-rounded in all aspects of their school life. The scholarship award is awarded to a Grade 12 pupil from a previously disadvantaged background who has excelled despite obstacles. Orcilla Howard (17) is the co-ordinator of Interact and executive member of Eco Ltd, President of the RCL at Uitenhage. She performs volunteer work at Rosa Munch Old Age Home and assists with various community projects in hospitals as well as tutoring mathematics to learners after school. Apart from that Orcilla is an EP gymnast and has represented the Eastern Province at the SA gymnastic games. She also has her level 1 for gymnastics coaching. Academically she has been awarded best in Afrikaans, merit awards for History, Geography and Physical Sciences. She obtained third place in Mathematics for Star Schools and received the school’s best all-rounder award in 2010 and 2011. Her prizes received as a winner at the Weekend Post Matric of the Year competition include a full three or four year scholarship for a first degree or diploma at NMMU, a Proline Notebook valued R6 500, Vodacom handset and a Russel Hobbs microwave from Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses.

Splitting joint-owned property in divorce From time to time, the Property Poser experts assist readers whose property assets are a source of conflict in their divorce proceedings. In this instance, the reader was married out of community of property under the accrual system. He and his wife bought a piece of land and built a dwelling on it, where they both lived until the end of last year when she moved out owing to marital problems. The reader was responsible for the building costs and thereafter an agreement was reached that his wife would pay the bond while he covered all other living expenses, including vehicle payments, groceries and rates and taxes. The couple are now in the midst of divorce proceedings and the wife wants full ownership of the property. After consulting an attorney, the reader was advised that, since she had been paying the bond, his wife would be entitled to full ownership of the property. In terms of the accrual system, spouses still maintain their separate estates during the course of the marriage, as in this case, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay. “In the event of death or divorce, however, the spouse who has had the least growth in their asset value is entitled to share in a portion of the growth of the other spouse’s assets.” At the outset, says Du Toit, the starting value of each party’s estate is established and documented in the antenuptial contract. “This contract can also regulate the manner in which the differential in growth is divided.”
Although the reader did not provide these starting values, the point is moot as far as their fixed property is concerned because they acquired it jointly, says Du Toit. “They therefore own undivided halfshares in the property and this form of ownership can remain even after the divorce.” It is unrealistic though, in practice, that both parties would maintain their ownership, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in the metro. “Part of the settlement agreement would probably include how the property is to be dealt with. If the reader’s wife wishes to acquire his undivided half-share, she needs to compensate him for it.” Alternatively, says Vermaak, the parties could agree in the settlement that one of them becomes the full owner without any monies changing hands. “This will then be ratified in the final divorce decree.” The mere fact that only one party paid towards the bond instalment does not give that person claim to full ownership of the property, says Vermaak. “Such a party may have a claim for enrichment but, given the fact that the payment of items by each party was arranged by agreement and that our reader may claim set-off for payments made, it’s doubtful that such a claim would be successful.” Vermaak says the reader would do well to approach an attorney for assistance. “He or she would consider the matter a little more comprehensively, taking the surrounding circumstances into account as well as their potential influence on, for example, the fixed property.” To ask a property related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.

Automotive sector in right gear for 2020 target South Africa’s automotive sector is on the road to producing 1,2-million vehicles a year by 2020, according to National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) president Dave Powels. Speaking at a conference organised by the Automotive Industry Development Council (AIDC) as part of the South African Automotive Week 2012 (SAAW), Powels said the industry had enjoyed sustained growth of both local sales and exports since the downturn of 2009. This mirrors the global trend where sales are up in all regions, with the exception of Europe. A rapid rise of the sector in the East had resulted in a “dramatic” change of the “world order in the auto sector,” which has seen the major share of auto manufacturing move from the West to the East. South Africa’s share of world production has
dropped from 0,8% to 0,66% since its previous high before the global slump. The share is now “relatively stable at six per cent,” and is considerably higher than when sanctions ended in 1995, and “South Africa was not really in the (export) game”. The auto industry remains a significant contributor to the local economy, and accounted for 11,8% of South African exports in 2011. This share is being maintained - a record volume of automotive exports of 361 000 units is expected in 2013 owing to the introduction of new models. Vehicle component exports have risen from R3-bn in 1995 to 38,8-bn in 2011, with a forecast of R45-bn in 2013. “The trend is clear. There is exponential growth based on security from government policy,” he said.

Groendal sports day
Sports teams from ten primary schools will participate in the Groendal School Sport Association’s annual sports day which will be hosted at the Rosedale sports fields on Saturday. The participating schools include Caritas, CW Henrickse, Dalrose, Dower, Jubilee Park, Little Flower, Seagull, St Joseph’s, Uitenhage Primary and Verite. The teams will compete in rugby, netball, soccer and hockey games. Action starts at 09:00.
