Bushaltes laat inwoners frons SPRINGTIME AT ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK

nwoners van Despatch frons diep oor “dubbele” bushaltes wat op verskeie plekke in die hoofstraat slegs meters van mekaar geverf is.
Daarby is van hulle ook keelvol omdat van dié bushaltes reg voor hul huise, en voor hul opritte, geverf is. “Nie net busse nie, maar minibustaxi’s en allerhande ander openbare vervoer stop nou voor ons huis. Dit ontwrig elke oggend die verkeer,” het Eugenie Ferreira van Bothastraat gister gesê. Op verskeie plekke in Bothastraat, wat Hoofstraat word, was daar reeds inhamme in die sypaadjie waar busse uit die pad kan stop om passasiers op en af te laai. Maar nou is daar egter, slegs ’n meter weg, ’n tweede bushalte geverf, op die padoppervlak, waar openbare vervoer ook kan stop. “Die busse en taxi’s maak al hoe minder van die inhamme gebruik en stop in die middel van die pad, maak nie saak hoe druk die verkeer is nie,” het Ferreira gesê. Buiten die motoriste wat in die straat opgehou word, was Ferreira ook al by talle geleenthede in haar oprit vasgekeer omdat die bushalte voor haar huis is. “Dan moet ons hoe lank in ons eie oprit sit en wag tot die bus of taxi sy passasiers opgelaai het.” Sy noem ook dat mense wat van openbare vervoer gebruik maak dikwels rommel voor haar huis strooi terwyl hulle vir die bus wag. “En dan is dit ons verantwoordelik om dit skoon te maak.” Kupido Baron, munisipale woordvoerder, het gesê die twee bushaltes is naby mekaar om bykomende stilhouplek vir openbare vervoer te verskaf. “Indien daar reeds ’n voertuig in die inham sou staan kan ’n tweede voertuig die ander halte gebruik.”

Atleet pak Switzerse berge aan HEILIE COMBRINCK Die taai Ysterman-atleet Willie Kruger van Uitenhage was die enigste Suid-Afrikaanse deelnemer in sy ouderdomskategorie wat aan die onlangse langafstand-tweekamp wêreldkampioenksappe in Zofingen, Switzerland deelgeneem het. “Dit was ‘n ongelooflike lekker ondervinding en erger as die Ysterman-kompetisie. My voorbereiding was goed, want dit was ‘n nuwe uitdaging om daardie steiltes in die berge aan te pak. Ek het my fietsratte spesiaal vervang vir beter trapwerk teen die hellings, maar dit was sowaar nog te swak,” het ’n entoesiastiese Willie Kruger gesê. Dié Powerman Zofingen tweekamp-langafstandkampioenskappe word beskou as die gesogste van sy soort in die wêreld en is vir die 24ste agtereenvolgende jaar in Alpe aangebied. Die roete in die skilderagtige berg- en woudlandskap het afgeskop met 10km hardloop, dan 150km op die fiets (totale hoogte roeteverskil van 1600m) en weer terug in hardloopskoene vir ‘n 30km roete. Kruger het die uitmergelende 190km in 9 uur en 13 minute voltooi en ’n 18de plek in die 40-45 jaar ouderdomskategorie behaal. “Dit is mooi en skoon in die woude met tipiese huisies wat ’n mens herhinner aan die landskap waar Heidi en Peter rondgehol het. Oral is daar helderkleurige malvas met die sneeubedekte Alpe in die agtergrond.” Kruger het slegs vyf jaar gelede, voor hierdie eerste deelname van

Foto: VERSKAF hom aan ’n wêreldkampioenskappe, die avontuur aangepak om deur ruwe terrein te hardloop en met sy bergfiets te ry. “My belangstelling in dié sport het begin nadat Armand du Preez my aangemoedig het om die Trans-Baviaans 24-uur bergfietswedren te doen.” Sedert daardie 230km roete vanaf Willowmore deur die Baviaanskloof na Jeffreysbaai het Kruger ‘n hele rits ander avonture aangepak, onder andere die Ysterman en ook ’n gedeelte van die moordende Epic berg-
fietswedren. In 2010 het Kruger aan die Totalsports Xterra in Grabouw se berge deelgeneem, waarna hy uitgenooi is om Suid-Afrika in Spanje te verteenwoordig. Kruger kon ongelukkig nie hierdie wêreldkampioenskap bywoon nie. Kruger se fokus is nou op die Karoo-tot-Kus bergfietsuitdaging wat Sondag in Uniondale begin. Former pupils are coming from various parts of the country to attend what prom-
ises to be a splendid affair. Guest speaker for the occasion is 1981 head boy John O’Connor. According to Ghauderen Coetzee-De Vos, the objectives of UHPPTA include to contribute to the financial support of the school and its pupils as well as to establish a bursary fund to assist in the
academic development of the pupils of the school. “We also want to provide networking opportunities towards assisting the pupils of the school,” said Coetzee-De Vos. “The association recently played host to Professor Jonathan Jansen at Uitenhage High, a visit during which the professor impressed upon pupils the vital importance in their lives of a sound education. Professor Jansen has given the association the undertaking that he will be back next year for two days during which he will interact with parents, teachers and pupils,” said Coetzee-De Vos. SThe event commences at 19:00 and there will be a R50 raffle where attendees stand a chance to win an Apple iPad to the value of ±R8 000. Die groep Organised Chaos bestaan uit Gerhard en sy broer Lindsay Klerk, Arthur van der Merwe en Shauen van der Berg. Run, braai and birthday bash at beach for Heritage Day A Breakfast Braai, 5km Road Race, an Amazing Race and a birthday bash at the beachfront are all the elements on the menu for Heritage Day, in conjunction with the Algoa Bus Heritage Day 5km run at King’s Beach. The Run, organised by PEAAC, is held in collaboration with Bay TV and NMB Tourism. It will start at King’s Beach at 7.15am and has a cut-off time of 1hour and 15 minutes. In keeping with Heritage Day, which is also National Braai Day, the first 600 finishers will each receive a medal and a free boerewors roll. For those who would rather compete on a different level, the organisers are also holding their first ever breakfast braai competition to coincide with the run. Teams will compete for R4 000 worth of prizes sponsored by Algoa Bus. The competition categories are for the best homemade hamburger patties and the best breakfast salad. To add even more excitement NMB Tourism is also holding an Amazing Race which shares the starting point for the 5km Run but kicks off at 09:00. This day-long event includes Uitenhage and Schoenmakerskop. Then the action moves to Happy Valley for Bay TV’s first birthday which will be celebrated from 11:00 with a packed programme of free entertainment. Those who take part in all three events, i.e. the 5km Run, the Amazing Race and the Birthday Bash, qualify to win a trip on a party bus sponsored by Algoa Bus. Schools can win a cash prize of R1 000 for the school with the most bulk entries, provided that a minimum number of 50 children enter. Prizes galore at Afri-Save Marathon As the sun rises on the morning of 29 September athletes will take to the road, participating in the 42.2km Afri-Save Marathon which starts at 05:30. Adding to the excitement of the day there will also be a 5km as well as 10km fun run for those who prefer rather to enjoy the beginning of a new Spring day. The marathon is a qualifier for the 2013 Two Oceans as well as Comrades. Only runners in the marathon and 10km will qualify for medals, but t-shirts will be awarded to the first 200 en-
trants in all three races. Various prizes will be up for grabs, not only for the runners, but also for spectators. Spectators also stand the chance of winning daytrip for four to the luxurious five star Kwantu Private Game Reserve. Baseball excitement hits Despatch
There are six clubs which include the two Uitenhage clubs, namely Pirates Baseball Club and VW Baseball Club. In Despatch, there is Despatch Red Sox and in Port Elizabeth the PE Tigers, Gelvan A’s and St Peters.
HEILIE COMBRINCK Despatch will soon get a bit of an American flavour with the South African National Masters Baseball Challenge being hosted at the town’s central sports fields from 9-13 October. “Baseball in South Africa is growing at an alarmingly quick rate amongst the youth,” said Terrence Gouws, spokesperson for the SA National Masters Baseball Challenge. The World Baseball Classic Play-off is currently taking place in the USA and the South African team yesterday played against Israel. This play-off is to qualify for the 2013 World Baseball Classic Games. According to Gouws, who formerly was the head coach of the U/12 South African baseball side that participated at the All African Games in Kenya, baseball in SA is taking on a new chapter. “Youngsters are scouted from the age of 16 years and three youngsters have so far been signed to further their careers this year in the USA. On the local front, we are pleased that baseball is getting more popular.”
SA National Masters Baseball Challenge : . 9-13 October at Despatch Rugby Club . Games start at 08:30 and night games at 19:00 . Match duration 1 hour and 45 minutes . Total of 62 games will be played . Teams from 9 provinces will participate SFiday Fiday night friendly games will be played at Despatch with EP Vets vs Social EP squad and EP Elites vs the EP Juniors.
