n estimated 350 000 citizens attended the Rotary Family Health Day programme, a Pan-African health campaign which will be rolled out across Southern Africa during April. Uitenhage had the honour of hosting the national launch of the South African programme at KwaNobuhle LoveLife Centre. “Rotary is the oldest and largest civic organisation in the world and our motto is ‘Service Above Self’. “We (Rotarians) have always believed in disease prevention, beginning with our fight to eradicate polio,” said Marion Bunch, Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Rotary Family Health Day. Bunch, who hails from Georgia in the USA, was asked during 2002 by Rotary International President, Bhichai Rattakul, to assist in creating a programme for the orphans and vulnerable children in Africa. Two years later, the Rotary Board of Directors approved

her application of mobilizing Rotarians, partners and communities into implementing the Rotary Family Health Day disease prevention programme. “It as been clear since the outset that Rotarians could provide only one part of the answer for this massive event - that is, building, managing and volunteering at the 145 sites across South Africa. Therefore we established a unique public/private partnership whereby each partner has a critical and defined role and set of responsibilities which is why this partnership works!” About 4 000 Rotarians in South Africa, together with pro bono medical and technical support provided by the National Department of Health, USAID and various other support partners like Media24 assisted in helping create this success programme. “The only way to combat disease and build a healthy nation of people is by working together. Each partner is highly valued and we sincerely thank you for working with Rotarians to make a difference in the lives of South Africans,” said Bunch.

Vrou (70) pak haar eerste ‘Oceans’ aan HEILIE COMBRINCK

aas-Saterdag om 06:00 sal die 70-jarige OP atletiekkampioen, Orgia Nell van Uitenhage, haar eerste tree gee in ‘n Old Mutual Two Oceans half-marathon. “O, ek sien verskriklik uit. Verlede jaar het ons klublede gaan ondersteun wat aan die Oceans deelgeneem het. Dit het so lekker gelyk dat ek besluit het, nee kyk hierso ek wil dit ook doen!” sê Orgia Nell. Sy was in haar jeugjare ‘n blitsvinnige OP kampioen naelloper. Na skool het sy die atletiekbaan vir eers vaarwel gesê en 23 jaar gelede besluit dit is weer tyd om haar hardloopskoene aan te trek. “Dit het alles weer begin met die destydse De Mist Kommando 12km padwedloop op Despatch. Daarna het ek ‘n Ladies Spar gedoen en toe besluit om by ’n klub aan te sluit.” Sedertdien is Orgia ‘n lid van Muirite Striders atletiekklub op Uitenhage. “Dit is ‘n wonderlike klub en almal is so behulpsaam. Daar heers ‘n lekker gees. My groot inspirasie is oefenmaat Margie du Toit. “Nou met die Oceans voor die deur (19 April) druk sy ons om bulte te doen. Kanonstraat is die ergste. Ek spot en sê Margie kan nie tel nie, want sy sê kom ons draf vier lamppale en dan stap ons. As ek my kon kry is sewe lamppale verby!” ’n Maand gelede is Orgia gekroon as die 15km OP kampioen in die kategorie 70+ jaar en ’n paar Saterdae gelede het sy weer goud gewen en is nou ook die 21.1km OP kampioen in haar ouderdsomsgroep. “Elke keer as ek wegspring sê ek ‘dankie Here’ en vra Sy krag dat ek net in afsnytyd kan klaarmaak. “Oefening doen my kop goed en ek geniet dit om die omgewing waar te neem. Maar met wedlope kyk ek net voor my, want ek het twee keer baie hard geval deur nie die pad dop te hou nie.” Atletiek is in haar bloed en haar nasate het dié talent by hulle ouma ge-erf. “My kleinkinders Anke (10) en Arina (8) is sportmal en hulle hardloop ‘n hond uit ‘n bos uit. As ek gaan kuier dan vra hulle dat ek my tekkies moet inpak om saam met hulle te oefen.” Orgia se man, Gert, skerts en sê “Ek sou ook graag saam met haar wou oefen, maar ek moet die huis oppas as sy so hardloop.” Hy is ‘n bekende in die duiwebedryf en was vroeër jare ‘n kranige sportafrigter. Dit was hoeka langs die sportveld wat hy Orgia ontmoet het. “Ek ondersteun Orgia al die pad. As sy nie hardloop nie is sy vol pyne. Dit beteken vir haar baie om haar sport te beoefen.” Orgia sê ten slotte: “Solank as wat ek gesond is en kan deelneem, sal ek dit bly doen. Ek wil baie dankie sê aan my man vir sy ondersteuning en begrip. Dit dra my deur elke wedloop.” Haar raad aan mense wat dit oorweeg om aan wedlope te begin deelneem is “uithouvermoë en wilskrag. Moet nooit te vinnig te ver hardloop nie. Gebruik lamppale as bakens en kry ‘n oefenmaat.”

Autism generally begins at birth REPORTER

pril is autism awareness month and every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the month with fundraising and awareness-raising events. Autism is a developmental disability that generally begins at birth or within the first three years of life. It is the result of a neurological disorder that changes the way the brain functions – causing delays or problems in many different skills from infancy to adulthood. For example, both children and adults with autism usually exhibit difficulties in social interaction, as well as in verbal and non-verbal communication. They also tend to be interested in repetitive or restricted activities. While the majority of autistic children look completely normal, they differ from other children by engaging in perplexing and distressing behaviours. Autism belongs to a collection of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). A spectrum disorder is a group of disorders with similar features. While one person may have mild symptoms, another might have more severe ones.

There are also differences in the nature of the symptoms themselves and when they are likely first to appear. The three different types of autism spectrum disorders are: . Autistic disorder (also known as “classic” autism). This is the most common condition among the ASDs. It is marked by major delays in language, difficulties with social interactions, and unusual behaviours. Some people with autistic disorder also have impaired intellectual abilities. . Asperger syndrome. People with this syndrome display some of the milder symptoms of autistic disorder — such as social challenges and unusual behaviors. They generally do not have any delays in language or impaired intellectual abilities. . Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PPD-NOS, also referred to as “atypical autism”). Individuals may be diagnosed with PPD-NOS if they meet some of the criteria for either autistic disorder or Asperger syndrome but not all. They typically have milder and fewer symptoms than those with autistic disorder. Symptoms may be limited to problems with language and social interaction.

In their efforts to assist in improving the community through various projects, the Uitenhage branch of the Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuur-vereniging (ATKV) latest venture is focussing on old age homes. “We have identified a number of people at old age homes in Uitenhage, who do not have a cent to buy the necessary personal hygiene items,” said Kallie Calitz, chairman of the Uitenhage ATKV branch.

“We request the public to support us as we are busy collecting toiletries like soap, facecloths, toothpaste, toothbrushes and various other items for distribution to those less fortunate than us,” said Calitz. Artists Tertius van Huyssteen and Llise Dodd will once again host one of their exciting popup art exhibitions, showing some of their newest works. “Typical of a pop-up exhibition, a space not usually used for exhibitions, is transformed into an art gallery for a short period of time,” said Llise. Joining the two artists will be well-known ceramic artist, David Moss, from Port Elizabeth. “Our work complements each others’ as we incorporate elements of our lives and environment into our work. Competition was tough in the Basil & Mary Thomas Memorial Trophy klawerjas games with Jetta Kings Klawerjas Club emerging as winners only in the last ten minutes, scoring 104-96 against VW Vivo KC’s Bteam. The combination of Ouboet January and Fabian Naidoo was brilliant to over-run Pops Rhodes and Stan Marais to put up 36-12 points. Polo Cats KC clinched the trophy by outscoring 120-98 against VW Vivo KC A-team. Jaures Stadt and Hemmo Moodie from Polo Cats did the trick for their team by scoring 42-28 against Ashley Hattingh and Ricardo Jones from VW

EP Kings ready for Boland clash T

he EP Kings are keen to impress on their home ground when they go up against the Regent Boland Cavaliers at 19:00 tomorrow evening in the South section of the Vodacom Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “For me the Vodacom Cup is a great opportunity to give back,” says EP Kings Coach, Mzwandile Stick. “This is my chance to take all the experience I have gained on and off the field and give back to the team.” Stick has an illustrious rugby career that started at EP Kings before moving on to the Sharks and then the Springbok Sevens. He captained the South Africa sevens team during the 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series which saw the team win the series title for the first time. He retired as a player in 2012 and went on to coach the EP Kings Under-21 side last year. The Vodacom Cup is South Africa’s premier development tournament and is about unearthing the future stars of rugby. “To our supporters I say, be patient with our youngsters, they are still coming up but the future looks promising. Look out for

players like Aidon Davis, Masixole ‘Coyi’ Banda and CJ Velleman, they are going to go far,” says Stick. Davis is currently in Cape Town as part of the extended training group of 70 of the country’s most promising Under-20 players.

This squad will be reduced to approximately 40 players who will then continue with preparations for the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship held in New Zealand this June. Davis has already played for the SA Under-

20 side last year. “When I was six years old, I caught the rugby bug as I come from a rugby-playing family – both my dad and brother play,” says Davis. “I am just 19 years old, so the Vodacom Cup is a great opportunity and experience for a youngster like me to play at this senior level. I would love to be a Springbok but I am happy where I am now and we will see what the future brings. Rugby is my whole life, I just love it.” The EP Kings can also boast having one of the Du Plessis brothers in their ranks, Francois ‘Tabbie’ du Plessis. Youngest brother to Jannie and Bismarck, Tabbie is also a front ranker. All three of the brothers have come up through the ranks of the Vodacom Cup. “The players are looking forward to meeting Boland at NMB Stadium – it’s going to be a good match. Most importantly, they need the support from the people of the Eastern Province,” concludes Stick. )The kick-off of the home ground match between the EP Kings and the Regent Boland Cavaliers at Nelson Mandla Bay Stadium will be at 19:10 tomorrow evening.
