Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show which will be held at the Uitenhage Airfield on Saturday. The highly effective fire fighting combination of a Cessna 182 spotter plane winged by a huge Bell UH-1 “Huey” from Working On Fire (WOF) aerial fire combating team will on be seen in action on Saturday. The Huey was developed for the US military by the American company Bell, for the Vietnam War. All the WOF Hueys have been fitted with Bambi

buckets capable of dropping 1 100 litres of water on a fire. “This will be a rare opportunity for festival goers to see how the Huey and spotter plane operate together with the local fire brigade. The Huey will scoop water and drop it off alongside the runway at a mock fire,” said Lourens Kruger, Wings & Wheels Festival event organiser. “It will not be a real fire, just smoke. As fire will not be allowed close to the airfield accord-

ing to the rules and regulations applicable at the airshow.” The Wings & Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow will start on Friday at 10:00 with entertainment and stalls. From 16:00 onwards aircraft will start arriving and at 19:00 the Afrikaans singer and West Coast storyteller Andries Vermeulen will perform at the Uitenhage Airfield. Stock car vs aeroplane HEILIE COMBRINCK The Wings & Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show will be held at the Uitenhage Airfield tomorrow and Saturday. On Saturday the action starts at 08:00 with a parade of veteran vehicles and motorcycles with Karel Spangenberg from Algoa Steel leading the parade in his big yellow Jeep all the way from VW AutoPavilion through the streets of Uitenhage to the airfield. Various aircraft, veteran vehicles, Street Rods, motorcycles and off-road vehicles will be on display and there will be lots of outdoor activities and of course exhilarating flying in the sky on Saturday as from 11:00. One of the highlights of the festival includes a race at 16:30 between South African oval track racing champion Pieta Victor in his 2.1 Modified against one of the aircraft. Internationally known Patrick Davidson, who became the country‘s youngest

aerobatic champion during 2007, together with his dad Stu Davidson, will showcase some of their eccentric veteran aircraft. They are descendents of Doug Davidson, in memory of whom the airshow will be held. The festivities will end with a Spinning BMW followed by the Bike Draw (Sym 125), karaoke competition and lastly Rock The Hage bands will perform until late at the Uitenhage Airfield. Festival-goers are requested to bring their own chairs and there will be tents to enjoy the shade whilst watching the air show. Various local charitable organisations will benefit from the event. REPORTER “I did not see the Biker.” This is a phrase all too familiar to many bikers who have been involved in road accidents resulting in serious injuries at huge medical costs and unfortunately for some even fatal. An extract from the bikers prayer “watch over my brothers who ride with me, keep them safe and close to thee, keep my wheels upon the ground so I‘ll return home safe and sound.” The above resulted in the establishment of the Ratel Rally of which the third edition was held last weekend at The Springs on the outskirts of Uitenhage. The Ratel Rally is an old school rally,

which is hosted by the Dirty Dozen with the purpose of generating funds for the Bikers Benevolent Fund (BBF) a registered nonprofit organization. “All funds raised at the Ratel Rally will be used to the benefit of bikers in need. The concept of the Ratel Rally is to host a rally in the same way that rallies were held in the old days,” said Chairman Eddie Hall, BBF Chairman. “A critical and non negotiable rule is that there are only bikes and trikes and no vehicles.” According to Hall, approximately 800 bikers from all over South Africa including Namibia attended the Ratel Rally. On Saturday morning BBF member Pastor Zigi Dewy of the Christian Motorcycle Association held

a wedding ceremony for bikers Willie and Alethea Roach of the Coded Motorcycle Club, Port Elizabeth. “The message the BBF wishes to spread is that all road users give caution to bikers. They therefore will continue to enjoy the pleasure of biking and raise vast sums of funds for their communities,” said Hall. This was the case with the Union Renegades MC who donated R5 000 to assist the Uitenhage SPCA after a container was destroyed by fire last Friday. Twee vraghouers wat as pakkamers dien op die DBV-terrein het gister omstreeks 01:30 aan die brand geraak. Werkers by ’n nabygeleë onderneming het die vlamme gesien en die polisie daarvan verwittig. Die brandweer was kort daarna op die toneel om die brand te blus – enkele meter van die hokke waar 55 katte gehuisves word. “Al wat deur my kop gegaan het terwyl ek na die hokke gehardloop het, was dat ek die katte moet red, want toe al het ’n kathangmat en struik in die hoek naaste aan die vuur reeds begin vlamvat,” het Koos Kroukamp, inspekteur by die DBV, gesê. Bestuurslede en personeel krap kop oor wie die boosdoener/s is en waarom dié sinnelose daad, waarvan die skade na beraming R65 000 beloop, gepleeg is. “Dit is een ding om oor die muur te klim en by die vraghouers in te breek en te steel. Maar dit is duidelik dat wie ook al verantwoordelik was, geen poging aangewend het om enigiets uit die houers te steel nie,” het Elinda Tonneson, voorsitter van die Uitenhage-DBV, gesê. ’n Klag van opsetlike saakbeskadiging is by die polisie aanhangig gemaak. Die Uitenhage-DBV is afhanklik van fondsinsameling om sy deure oop te hou. Een van die projekte is rommelverkopings, en artikels

Volgens Tonneson het die DBV sedert Oktober 2014 verskeie kere onder diewe deurgeloop. “Wat vir ons baie ontstellend is, is dat boosdoeners van ons varke en ’n bees kom slag het. Onvoldoende beligting belemmer die sekuriteitskameras se beeldgehalte.”

SPCA overwhelmed by public’s support Following the disastrous fire at the Uitenhage SPCA in the early hours of last Friday morning, the feeling of despair and disbelief at the shelter has been replaced by one of amazement. This is solely as a result of overwhelming response and generosity of the public, both locally and nationally. “Donations have been received from as far afield as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Springbok and Durban. A steady stream of individuals, club and corporate representatives have passed through the shelter gates and donations of food, pet accessories, jumble and money have flooded in,” said Deirdre Swift, Trea-

surer of the Uitenhage SPCA Management Committee. Public support has far exceeded the expectations of the shelter and the committee and staff of the Uitenhage SPCA would like to extend their sincerest thanks and gratitude to all who have contributed. “Thanks also go to the media and all the individuals responsible for making the plight of the shelter known. “The sheer volume of donations reflects the compassion and concern of the public for abused, neglected and homeless animals, and this ethos is embraced by all at the SPCA and augurs well for animal welfare in the community,” said Swift.

Boundary wall to secure cemetery HEILIE COMBRINCK Safety at the Jubilee Park Cemetery in Uitenhage has been a matter of huge concern for the past few years. The construction of a new boundary fence and solid concrete walls might bring more peace of mind for persons visiting the graves of loved-ones at this cemetery. According to Councillor Pieter Terblanche, the Betafence which has been erected alongside Dower Avenue as well as the solid concrete boundary walls, which currently are in the process of being erected, hopefully will contribute to the safety of visitors. “The fence is an anti-vandal and anti-

climb fence which is characterised by small mesh apertures and its features allow visibility especially for security reasons,” said Councillor Terblanche. “Apart from the fact that visitors are being harassed, intimidated and robbed by scoundrels roaming the cemetery, gravestones are vandalised and grazing cows also cause damage.” Councillor Terblanche said the fence and solid concrete wall will definitely be effective in preventing cows from further damaging the gravestones. Security in the form of persons patrolling the area will still be needed, as in the past there were incidents where criminals have hidden in trees inside the cemetery and then targeted visitors unaware of their presence. The contractor, Afrisec Strategic Solutions, has been appointed by the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality to erect the boundary concrete wall and fence at the Jubilee Park cemetery.

Project to get community on the move Local businesses joined the Klinicare Pharmacies initiative, offering persons with walking restrictions a chance to move on their own, by donating wheelchairs and walkers. Not being able to walk or move on your own makes one dependent on others, which results in restricting a person’s life and eventually one’s well-being. Heilie Combrinck accompanied the Klinicare Pharmacies team on their visit to the various local businesses which last week made a difference in people’s lives, getting them on the move again. Ironman reaches new heights in Bay REPORTER

T’s all systems go for the 11th Ironman event to be held in Nelson Mandela Bay on Sunday, with this year’s event raising the bar yet again.

Now known as the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship it forms part of the exclusive championship series and ranks among the top five races in the world outside of the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. It places Nelson Mandela Bay alongside cities such as Melbourne and Frankfurt. With a field of over 2 000 participants, the race this year also sees the deepest and strongest professional IRONMAN field ever assembled in Africa, featuring world, European, North American and Asia-Pacific champions. The impact of the championship status can also be seen in the entry numbers as 609 of the field consists of international athletes making up 30% of the total field. The winner on Sunday becomes the first ever IRONMAN African Champion, a title that will carry significant weight across the triathlon world. Men’s field Among the continental and world championship winners who will line up together with some of South Africa’s most promising talents at the start on Sunday are 2013 world champion Frederik Van Lierde from Belgium, who is coming to race in Port Elizabeth for the first time. The reigning men’s IRONMAN North American champion, TJ Tollakson, and another Belgian, Bart Aernouts, will also be making a first appearance in Port Elizabeth. Aernouts is the reigning IRONMAN 70.3 European champion and capped off 2014 with a top 10 finish at the IRONMAN World Championship and was recently placed third at the Standard Bank IRON-

MAN 70.3 South Africa in January. The South African contingent is probably the strongest it has ever been, as James Cunnama, Kyle Buckingham and Matt Trautman are all in contention for a podium. Buckingham is sure to get a lot of support along the way as Port Elizabeth is his hometown. Women’s Field Among the women contenders the favourites are Jodie Swallow from Britain and Linsey Corbin from the United States of America. Swallow has a string of high profile results in 2014 and made light work of the tough course in East London winning her fifth consecutive Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa title in January. Linsey Corbin makes her first appearance in South Africa. Her win at IRONMAN Austria in 2014 will go down as a highlight. Exciting activities Activities during the IRONMAN weekend include activities for the whole family. The weekend truly kicks off today, when the registration for the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship, the Vodacom CTC and the Spur IRONKIDS as well as The Health and Fitness Expo opens. Saturday brings the first taste of racing action as the Vodacom CTC gets underway at 7.50am until 11am. Thereafter the finish line is transformed and the Spur IRONKIDS South Africa kicks off at 12pm until 5pm. Sunday, March 29, is race day as the 2 048 athletes line up on Hobie Beach for the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship. The race gets underway at 6.30am with the PRO Men hitting the water. The PRO women will be starting three minutes later. The first athletes are expected to finish between 1.45pm and 3pm. The race continues until midnight. From 10pm a DJ will keep the crowd entertained as the finish line party starts and sees the last athletes cross the line until midnight.
