Cell phone thieves nabbed Two men will appeared in Uitenhage magistrate court on allegations of cell phone theft. It is alleged that last Friday, at about 17:00 a Uitenhage man was crossing the railway line in Bubbs Avenue when two men accosted him and prevented him from walking further. “The man was violently flung on to the ground and the two suspects started to assault him. One of the suspects stabbed the man on his arms. The suspects took his Blackberry cell phone from his pocket and ran away,” said police spokesperson Lt Col Priscilla Naidu. Fifteen minutes later, the same men pounced on their second victim. The complainant was walking in Park

The complainant requested his sim card and the men gave it to him. “After the first report, police scanned the area for the suspects and with the assistance of a restaurant owner who provided accurate details of the suspects they were arrested,” said Naidu. The stolen cell phones were found in the suspects’ possession. “The police appreciate the community’s assistance which led to the apprehension of the suspects. As police work entails providing a service to the community, the development of a co-operative police-community relationship is vital,” said Naidu.

UD REPORTER Four hijack suspects were arrested after a shootout between the police and six men in Melbrooks Avenue, Uitenhage during last week Wednesday’s afternoon rush hour. Police received information regarding a possible hijacked vehicle heading towards Uitenhage. “The vehicle was spotted by police in Melbrooks Avenue and when the driver noticed the police he started to speed away,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. “A chase ensued between the police and the suspects whereafter the suspect vehicle collided with a BMW and the suspects alighted and started shooting at the police who retaliated.” Four suspects were arrested. One of them was wounded and later passed away. Two suspects managed to escape. All six suspects are in their thirties. Police investigations revealed that the owner of the VW Polo Sedan, Siyabolela Lemese (33) was travelling from Gauteng to East London on Tuesday, 16 October. “It is alleged that the suspects received a lift with Lemese. About 20km from Queenstown Lemese was shot and his body was left at the side of the road. The suspects continued in his vehicle to Port Elizabeth,” said W/O Swart. Cellphones and property of Lemese were recovered at a suspect’s home in Motherwell. Lemese was from Gauteng. Police are investigating two cases of murder, attempted murder and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is aware of the incident.

The UD News obtained the following information regarding the new electricity tariffs from a Ward 7 DA Newsletter.

Where down lighters are required, use LED down lighters only. ) Limit the lights used at night to illuminate your property. ) Switch off all appliances, including your computer when not in use. ) If you have a swimming pool, reduce the on-cycle time. How is the purchase of electricity calculated? The purchase of electricity is calculated each month. Rose gekweek wat nie verlep Die vervaardiging van Iluba-rose, waarvan die blomme en blare tot ses maande sonder water kan hou, bevorder werkskepping landwyd met sowat 70 000 van dié rose wat maandeliks vervaardig word. Die water in die selle en weefsel van die blomme en blare word deur natuurlike, eko-vriendelike preserveermiddels vervang. Die rose word in 30 lande, insluitend Australië, Japan en Saoedi-Arabië versprei. Die Iluba-tegniek is deur die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU) se instituut vir chemiese tegnologie, InnoVenton, ontwikkel. InnoVenton se prof. Ben Zeelie, dr. Shawn Gouws, en die bekende Addo rooskweker Tinie Maske is die groepie innoveerders van die rose. NMMU is ’n aandeelhouer in die patenthouer-maatskappy en die African Floralush-vervaardigingsmaatskappy, wat die tegnologie lisensieer. So sê Maryke van Zyl, ’n derde jaar modeontwerpstudent aan die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit, op die vooraand van haar mode-vertoning om die aandag te vestig op die uitwissing van renosters in Suid-Afrika. “My klerekonsep is ‘Trots Suid-Afrikaans’ en my reeksnaam is ‘Steel Flower’ wat geinspireer is deur windpompe wat eg Suid-Afrikaans is,” het Maryke gesê. “Renosters is ook eg Suid-Afrikaans en een van die wilde dier spesies wat ons land uniek maak. Die uitwissing van renosters is tragies en as trotse Suid-Afrikaner voel ek dit is my plig om iets te doen. Ek is passievol hieroor en voel as elkeen iets probeer, maak nie saak hoe klein nie, kan ons saam ’n verskil maak.” Maryke het as deel van haar Steel Flower-reeks, spesiale krale-armbandjies ontwerp spesifiek met die boodskap om te help om renostertropery te stop. Die bandjies sal teen R5 elk tydens die mode-vertoning verkoop word. Maryke se mode-vertoning word op 2 November om 18:30 vir 19:00 in die NMMU se Gold Fields ouditorium op die Noord-kampus gehou.

Die publiek word uitgenooi om die sosiale geleentheid met ‘n verskil by te woon. Kaartjies is R95 en is by die deure beskikbaar. Fondse wat deur die verkope van die armbandjies ingesamel word sal aan die African Wildlife Foundation geskenk word vir hulle anti-renosterstroopprojekte.

Security trainees employed for festive season HEILIE COMBRINCK In creating opportunities for unemployed persons, a group of women has received security training and has been deployed in the Uitenhage central business area to assist the police during the forthcoming festive season. Their training forms part of the expanded pubic works programme of which the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative acts as the implementing agent on behalf of Nelson Mandela Bay. “We are grateful to the police as they are the first stakeholders to offer working opportunities to these EPWP trainees,” said Milisa Piko from the UDDI. “The purpose of the programme is for the trainees to assist wherever

there already is an infrastructure in place, but a lack of manpower. It is all about offering working opportunities. The aim is for the trainees after the three month period to have attained the skills and working experience which will enable them to apply for a full time job,” said Piko. During the first phase of the EPWP 40 trainees had the opportunity to receive training in security, general maintenance work or environmental and agricultural activities. Training is provided by registered service providers. Col. André Swart from the Uitenhage police said: “With the festive season ahead these women will act as our ‘eyes’ in identified hot spot crime areas. “They are in constant contact with us reporting any suspicious activities or persons.”

Johnny Clegg live at The Boardwalk

HAVING just returned from sold out shows in America, Canada, France and Monte Carlo, where he received a standing ovation at the Opera House when he performed for Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, Johnny Clegg will be bringing his show to The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment world lawn area, Port Elizabeth on Sunday, November 4.

in concert,” said Dave Tiltmann, Managing Director of Algoa FM. The world-class entertainer, Johnny Clegg, is a dancer, anthropologist, singer, songwriter, academic, activist and French knight. He has campaigned against the injustice of Apartheid South Africa and been instrumental in putting the new South Africa on the map as a cultural ambassador. By combining African music structures with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds, Johnny pioneered a new and unique sound, establishing himself as South Africa’s biggest musical export. From Europe to the States, from Australia to Potchefstroom, audiences in sold out venues have danced to Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World, Scat-

terlings of Africa, I Call Your Name, Impi, Great Heart, and African Sky Blue. Johnny Clegg will be joined on stage by a 6-piece band and the audience can expect to hear some of Johnny Clegg’s greatest hits, as well as a couple of songs from his new album “Human” as part of this high-energy, highly entertaining show. Auditions for country’s only junior regional choir UD NEWS REPORTER The Eastern Cape junior Children’s Choir (ECjCC) under the leadership of Hanlie Young, will be holding auditions for the 2013 choir year on Saturday, November 3, at Summerwood Pri-

mary School. Children from all parts of the Nelson Mandela Metropole and surrounding towns who will be in Grade 1, 2, 3 or 4 in 2013, are welcome to audition. Very young prospective choir members are invited to bring their own teddies along in order to meet Bamba, the

official ECjCC choir teddy bear. The ECjCC practises once a week, on Wednesdays from 3.45pm to 5.30pm at Cillié High School, their sponsored rehearsal venue. The ECjCC this year presented the annual Prestige Concert of the Eastern Cape Children’s and Youth Choirs

Local Port Elizabeth Idols top two finalist Melissa Allison will be performing live for one show only on The Boardwalk festival lawn area on Saturday. She will be joined on stage by two more local favourites – Lee-ann Wales and her mother Charmaine Allison. Also performing are The Rockets, from Cape Town, who have shared the stage with international acts such as Alicia Keys, P. Diddy, Shayne Ward, Will Young and Billy Ocean.

They have performed at prestige events in South Africa, such as The Staying Alive Aids concert at Green Point stadium, Unite of The Stars, and Concerts in the Park. Chefs sharpen their knives for the Kitchen Maestro title

THEheatisonforamateurchefscompeting to become Walmer Park Shopping Centre’s first Kitchen Maestro.

Here is the recipe for readers who would like to try it at home.

Kingklip

The first of the five-weekly live cookoffs was held last Saturday and will continue every Saturday from 10am to 12pm in the Walmer Park Shopping Centre Promotions Court until and including November 17. Every Saturday five entrants will compete against each other. Cooking away the first spot in the semi-finals last Saturday, was Liza Vermaak of Charlo. The entrants had to prepare thyme-studded Kingklip with Hollandaise and Sautéed Mushroom, Leek and Fine Beans according to a recipe provided by the competition’s chef, Dewald Hurter of Chez Patrick restaurant in Port St Francis.

Kingklip method

1. Make criss-cross cuts on the top of the Kingklip. At every cross punch a small hole with a sosatie skewer and stud with a thyme bud. Season Kingklip with salt and pepper. 2. Over moderate heat fry Kingklip in canola oil studded side first. Then turn over and cook through from the bottom. 3. Finish with a squeeze of lemon and by melting a small blob of butter over fish.

Hollandaise method

Hollandaise

1. Cut the butter into pieces and melt over low heat. Add the thyme to infuse. 2. Half fill a saucepan with water. Bring

to the boil then remove from heat. 3. Put the egg yolks with a tablespoon of water in a bowl over the pan of hot water and whisk for 2 to 3 minutes until thick. 4. Keep on whisking and drizzle in the strained melted butter, very slowly, whisking continously until sauce is thick. 5. Add lemon juice and season.

Sautéed vegetables

1. Over low heat sauté mushrooms and fine beans in butter. 2. Add a pinch of garlic, lemon zest and leek. Sauté until vegetables are cooked but still firm. 3. Finish with chopped parsley and seasoning

When you open the car to look at the equipment it should be attractive. Not only good on the ears, but also the eyes.” XPlosive Car Audio’s team consists of Kevern Layton, Juan Higgs, Leon Panagis, AD Drury and Justin Kettelwell. At a recently held sound competition at Otto du Plessis high school, Juan Higgs was announced as the winner with his car audio system. The team then entered the Speed & Sound competition where Higgs and Leon Panagis both achieved third position in their respective classes. The team entered the sound competition at DF Malherbe high school Higgs once again was the winner. Kevern Layton achieved second position and AD Drury third in their individual classes. SXplosive Car Audio will be hosting their first sound competition at the Rotary Club of Despatch’s Boeresportdag which will be held in Despatch on the 10th November. Jimny is a 4x4 for real – for women, even an eye-catching air scoop, new grille and a bolder front bumper – all to give it a more powerful and aggressive look. To emphasize the fact that it is 4x4 for real, the fog lamps are now located in recesses on either side of the intake which decreases the risk of damage while having fun off the beaten track. On the inside the Jimny boasts redesigned head restraints for both front and rear passengers. The new headrests provide improved comfort and support, and also allow the rear seats to be folded flat without the need to remove the head restraints. From a safety perspective, the latest Jimny now offers ISOFIX child-seat anchor points. This is in addition to various active and passive safety features that it already has, such as ABS anti-lock brakes, dual SRS front airbags, threepoint inertia reel seatbelts, and front and rear head restraints. Unchanged is the Jimny’s array of standard comfort and convenience features. These include air-conditioning, remote central locking, electrically operated windows and mirrors, power steering, an FM Stereo/AM receiver with CD front-loader, and an integrated alarm/ immobiliser system.

BETTIE GILIOMEE A COMPACT 4x4 with hardly any boot space and only three doors is hardly the criterion that women - and moms in particular – would put at the top of their wish list. So learning that the Suzuki Jimny was voted by women as South Africa’s most fancied all-terrainers in the 2009 Women’s Car of the Year Awards, organised by the Women on Wheels motoring supplement, certainly piqued my interest to find out why. Let’s face it, just as women often buy shoes which are not meant for walking, many women prefer an SUV but will hardly ever risk spoiling its good looks by taking it off-road. And this is where the Jimny is different - according to the people at Suzuki, this is a vehicle built for fun – built to be used what it was designed for – going off-road.

Facelift Facelift

The Suzuki Jimny has recently been revamped with a facelift inside and out, which is basically only a cosmetic change. The most obvious improvements are at the front of the Jimny which include a new bonnet,

Interior Interior

It certainly is compact on the inside, but there are enough cupholders for all four occupants. The back space might be a bit limited for two adults. The glove compartment which has both open and closed compartments is very practical. The back seat can also fold down flat in a 50/50 split. Despite the boot space being very limited, I liked the fact that it opens to a flat surface for loading and unloading luggage with ease. A negative for people with a family is, however, the fact that it is a three-door. The front passenger seat can be folded down and moved forward with one easy motion but moving the driver’s seat flat and forward takes some effort.

Ride Ride

The Jimny has a five-speed manual gearbox which takes a bit of muscle to shift, as is the case with most 4x4s. It is a bit rickety when driving in first, second and third gear, but in fourth it goes very well. This is, however, to be expected for a vehicle with such high ground clearance. I also found that the window was rattling a bit when driving with it open. Now for the good news. Its handling is superb. Its compact size makes it ideal for zipping around town and getting in an out of places your bigger family wagons and SUVs can’t handle. It has all the attributes of a 4x4 but in a compact size for conquering the obstacles of the concrete jungle, as well as the great outdoors.
