Zero tolerance at rugby clash HEILIE COMBRINCK
E
xciting rugby action is expected on Saturday when two of Uitenhage’s giant rugby clubs will face each other for the first time since 2010. Progress will take on Gardens in an Eastern Province Rugby Union Grand Challenge match at the Central sports fields.
“We wish to extend a stern warning to supporters to not make themselves guilty of any misbehaving.
“Believe it or not, but whenever these two teams come up against each other, the town comes to a standstill,” said Colin Agulhas, spokesperson of Progress Rugby Club. The previous time these two clubs met on the rugby field during 2010 it ended tragically after a stampede. “Fighting broke out amongst supporters of the two clubs. This resulted in a stampede and eventually the death of little Bevan Joseph, the son of EPRU vice-president, Philip Joseph,” said Agulhas. According to him the club executive committee of Progress is therefore taking this rugby match in a very serious light and will make sure that all safety and security measures required by the Metro’s disaster management will be put in place. “We have hired a private security firm to assist the police, who will be present in full force to ensure the sporting event will be safe and sound for all attending. The police will practise a zero tolerance attitude.” According to Agulhas vehicles will be searched and no alcohol, glass objects or any dangerous items will be allowed on the sports grounds. “Bad behaviour that will also not be tolerated includes abusive language, provocation or smoking of okapipes close to crowds.
The police will not hesitate to remove such persons from the sports grounds or even arrest them,” said
Agulhas. The first game kicks off at 13:10 with the main game at 15:30. Gates
will open at 12:00 and the entry fee is R10 per person with R5 for children under the age of 10 years.
