VW press plant – most energy efficient in Africa

olkswagen Group South Africa has been awarded the prestige SJM Flex Environmental Award, the Exporters Club top annual environmental accolade. At this year’s ceremony, Volkswagen received two awards in the event recognising achievements of major exporters. The SJM Flex Environmental Award was presented to Volkswagen at the Eastern Cape Exporters Club event in recognition of the strides the company is taking to implement environmentally responsible manufacturing practices. The decision to construct a new R500 million Press Plant played a huge part in convincing the judges of Volkswagen’s commitment to environmentally sound manufacturing. The Press Plant, which opens at the end of 2012, will be the most environmentally responsible and energy-efficient in both Africa and the Volkswagen Group. “We have received the award in the environment category at a time when Volkswagen has just introduced its ‘Think Blue Factory’ strategy. A recognition of our efforts in ensuring that all new facilities and technologies that we introduce are in line with the Group target of becoming the most environmentally friendly motor manufacturer by 2018,” said David Powels, Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa.
A world’s first in new ‘green’ technogoly
The differentiator for the new
Press Plant will be the world first in using Wave Motion technology coupled with new Cobra technology. The “Cobra” component gets its name from the striking movement of the cobra, which moves parts through the press process much faster than conventional systems. This leads to a 30% reduction in energy consumption. According to Matt Gennrich, General Manager: Communications of Volkswagen Group South Africa, in supporting the company’s aim of reducing its carbon footprint the new Press Plant was constructed using “green” technology. “The building was designed to use natural light. The intelligent lighting systems have been fitted with occupancy sensors to monitor lighting. Recycled materials have been used in most areas and rainwater harvesting tanks have also been installed.” Another contributing factor was Volkswagen’s implementation of the global Volkswagen Group strategy called, “Think Blue. Factory.” “The strategy focuses on reducing waste, water, energy and emissions by 25% by 2018 and is currently being implemented in Volkswagen plants around the world,” said Gennrich. Volkswagen has also undertaken a new environmental aspect and impact methodology. In the 2011 international TÜV Audit, Volkswagen had zero Non Conformities and 21 Improvements in the Surveillance Audit.

In addition, Volkswagen record Polo exports in 2011 (81 581) to various parts of the world, were also recognised by the Eastern Cape branch of the Exporters Club by naming Volkswagen as the Original Equipment Manufacturer of the year.
Eastern Cape Exporters Club chairman Quintin Levey said: “As Nelson Mandela Bay’s biggest ratepayer and employer, Volkswagen’s successes in the export field and in the South African market have been
a major economic driver for this region. This success shows that local companies can excel in supplying the highest quality products to international markets including Germany itself in this case.”

Do not buy stolen goods for two men who allegedly held up workers at the Cycad Pipeline site office last Thursday evening. “The two men were doing routine camp inspection around the site when they were allegedly accosted by two men. “One of them was armed with a baton and the other with a firearm,” said police spokesperson Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. “The men were tied up and the two suspects broke into four offices on the site. They loaded diesel, computers, printers, copiers and
other office equipment into a white Isuzu bakkie. The men managed to untie themselves as the suspects drove off.” The suspects were Afrikaans speaking and their faces were covered. The estimated value of the stolen equipment is more than R25 000. Photo: SUPPLIED With the move towards ‘Think Blue’, Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) is leading the charge by supporting the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) dream of designing, manufacturing and racing a solar car. VWSA made a substantial financial and technical contribution towards the establishment of the project, which has culminated in the VWSA-NMMU Solar Car team participating in the 3rd South African Solar Challenge from 18-29 September 2012.
Race: 5 000km in two weeks
“VWSA was excited to be involved in such a unique manufacturing project with the NMMU engineering students. Renewable energy will pay a significant role in the future of the automotive industry and by embarking on such a project, they will gain valuable knowledge which they can bring into the engineering field,” says VWSA Production Director Tom Du Plessis. A number of international teams will be competing in solar-powered vehicles across South Africa in a two week race that will cover over 5 000km. Clive Hands, project leader of the VWSANMMU Solar Car team, said: “Our team consists of both local and international students from multiple faculties studying at NMMU. They have all voluntarily participated in this exciting project since its inception in May last year.” “The solar car has been designed to be as light as possible utilising composite technology in both the monocoque and the body shell to minimise rolling resistance, and CFD tech-
niques have enabled the design of the body shell to be aerodynamic to ensure that drag is reduced to a minimum,” added Hands.

“The car will attempt to travel the width and breadth of South Africa with its 6 m² solar deck producing no more power than it takes to run a hair-dryer,” concluded Hands. International Exchange student, Arne Kloeblen, who heads the electrical side of the team says, “The panels we used for powering the car are 6 square meters of monocrystalline silicon. They cover most of the top of the car and have been custom built to fit on to the car. A battery pack of lithium ion cells usually used for laptops or power tools is integrated to supply enough power if the heat from the sun does not provide sufficient energy to maintain the desired travel speed. “In this instance, tunnels, inclines and bad weather are less influential.”

Transnet women’s day of inspiration UD NEWS REPORTER The excitement was high when some 300 women from Transnet Rail Engineering (TRE) were treated by the company at The Hexagon near Amanzi as part of women’s month activities. The women were from TRE Cuyler Manor, Swartkops and New Brighton depots. Christina Jika from the Provincial Department of Education was the guest speaker on the day and gave an inspirational keynote address. She encouraged the women to never give up and “We need to be proud of who we are, where we come from and
what we as women have achieved”. Risk and Safety Business Manager in the TRE Cuyler Manor depot, Amanda Tongo also encouraged the women to further their education and to respect themselves. While significant progress has been made in the fight against poverty, many women are still trapped in a sea of poverty and deprivation because of disempowerment and illiteracy. Education plays an important role in the empowerment of women. Women also had the opportunity to play games together; this was an opportunity for them to have fun, relax and to get to know one another better.

‘n Eerste span- en OP o/17-krieketspeler van Hoërskool Brandwag, Schalk Conradie, is aangewys as die o/17-krieketspeler van die jaar vir die 2011-2012 seisoen. Conradie speel paaltjiewagter en is ook ‘n goeie kolwer en bouler. Hy open gewoonlik vir Brandwag en vir sy OP-span die kolfbeurt op nommer 1 of 2. Hy het vroeër vanjaar aan die OP o/17 SAtoernooi in Bloemfontein deelgeneem en daar ‘n totaal van 246 lopies in vyf wedstryde aangeteken. Sy beste telling was ‘n ongelooflike 109 lopies vanaf slegs 76 balle tydens die OP se wedstryd teen die KZN Binneland-span. Schalk se lopies was die derde meeste van al die kolwers by die toernooi. Na afloop van die toernooi is Schalk ook gekies as reserwe vir die Warriors se o/19-span vir die Cubs Week-toernooi wat in Stellenbosch gespeel is asook vir die OP se o/19span wat teen SWD gespeel het. Op die foto is Schalk met die trofee vir die beste o/17 OP-speler wat onlangs aan hom toegeken is.

Co-ownership creates strained relations
Problems associated with co-ownership is an oft-repeated topic for our Property Poser experts. This week’s situation highlights just how difficult the relationship can be. A reader writes that she co-owns a residential property with her mother, who has lived there since they purchased it. The daughter has moved out on occasion and during this time any tenants had to contribute to her portion of the bond. She says the arrangement is that she and her mother each contribute R1 000 per month. The reader says some of the issues between them stem from the fact that her mother’s new partner lives with her but refuses to pay rent, which the daughter feels he should. About a year ago, problems escalated when she wanted to move back into the property with her own daughter and three dogs. Her mother attempted to obtain an interdict against her to prevent her from bringing the dogs, as she claimed that they would mess up the garden. The interdict was not successful and the
daughter moved back into the house, but recently vacated the property again. She has obtained an estimate of the market-related rental, which is around R4 500 per month. After moving out, the reader suggested that her mother pay the full bond instalment since she now occupies the whole property. The mother has done so, but is threatening to take action against her for non-payment of the bond. The reader would like to know what her rights and obligations are in this regard. As joint owners of the property, mother and daughter each own an undivided half-share, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay. “When one party no longer occupies his or her share, the remaining owner obviously has the use and enjoyment of the whole property, which includes the undivided half-share belonging to the other.” Du Toit says the bond instalment must not be confused with payment entitling someone to live there. “The bond payments are made to-
wards acquiring ownership of the property.” Having said that, a set-off arrangement could be entered into, says Du Toit. “This means that the daughter may charge her mother rental for the half-share of the property that the mother is occupying.” Instead of this rental being paid to the daughter, the agreement could specify that it be paid directly to the bank as the reader’s portion of the bond, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in the metro. “If however the market-related rental for the property is R4 500 per month as the reader claims, it could mean that the mother still has to pay the excess to her daughter. “This is over and above the bond payment, unless they agree on a different rental amount.” Vermaak says entering into a simple contract when they first bought the property together could have served to avoid many of the issues now faced by the reader. Despite being a water-scarce country, South Africa faces extremely high levels of water wastage with confirmation of losses at municipalities estimated to be close to 50 percent. The government now warns in a report that unless the country starts saving water, fresh surface water availability may not be able to support the growing economy and associated needs. According to the draft water resource strategy released in August, South Africans are wasting too much water and municipalities were some of the biggest culprits. It found that in many irrigation and domestic schemes across the country, losses of up to 60 percent were recorded. This led to revenue loss of more than R11 billion a year in the municipal sector alone. Independent studies have revealed that South Africa would experience critical water shortages as early as 2020. “Ek is geweldig lief vir krieket en ek was so diep geraak deur Boucher se besering dat ek dadelik aan ’n plan gedink het,” het Makhaya Mjana (58) van New Brighton gesê. Boucher het ’n oogbesering opgedoen tydens ’n wedstryd teen die Engelse graafskapspan Somerset. Die dwarsbalkie het opgeskiet en Boucher in die oog getref toe Imran Tahir die kolwer skoongeboul het. Mjana se eenvoudige oplossing is ’n stelsel waar die middelpaaltjie met twee knippies toegerus word. Die een punt van ’n stukkie draad of tou word dan aan dié knippie vasgemaak terwyl die ander punt aan die dwarsbalkie geheg is. “Op dié manier kan die balkies nie gevaarlik wegspat nie, want dit is aan die paaltjie vas. Dit sal ook sorg dat paaltjiewagters, wat verk-
ies om sonder sonbrille te speel, veilig kan voel sonder om hul oë te bedek.” Dié uitvindsel sal Mjana, ’n oudonderwyser, kunstenaar en komponis, se 19de geregistreerde patent wees, en hy hoop om dit binnekort wyd te bemark. “Ek het reeds mense van Krieket SuidAfrika (KSA) gekontak en ek sal graag met krieketkenners van die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU) ook wil gesels.” Luke Alfred, woordvoerder van KSA, het gesê hoewel ’n besering soos dié van Boucher net as ’n frats beskou word, kan hulle dalk help om Mjana op die regte spoor te sit. “Ons vervaardig nie self produkte nie, maar indien ’n uitvindsel werklik toepasbaar is, kan ons die uitvinder in die regte rigting stuur sodat hy met paaltjie-vervaardigers en verskaffers direk kan skakel.” Dr. Richard Stretch van NMMU se sportwetenskap-afdeling het gesê Boucher se voorval was die eerste in sy soort wat in 200 jaar se krieket aangemeld is, en daar is min kommer dat dit herhaal sal word. Hy is wel bly om te sien hoe baie mense vir die spelers se veiligheid omgee.

HEILIE COMBRINCK Daar word met groot afwagting uitgesien na die Hoërskool Uitenhage se heel eerste gholfdag wat op Sondag, 23 September by die Uitenhage Gholfklub aangebied word. Dit is ’n historiese gebeurtenis en alle gholfspelers word uitgenooi om deel te wees van dié dag waar goeie pryse gewen kan word. Belangstellende besighede en gholfspelers kan die organiseerder van die gholfdag, Manie Daniels

Offroad racing this Saturday The third round of the Data Scout Challenge will be hosted by The East Cape Offroad Club on Saturday. The race headquarters will be in the Motherwell area across the road from Lloyds Brickworks. Racing action starts at 11:00 with the prize giving at 15:30. This is the same venue as the first race of the year, but with a few extra kilo-
