Kerk van vele torings So sê Natasha Davis, een van die Despatch inwoners wat haar bekommernis uitgespreek het oor ’n tweede selfoonseintoring wat by NG kerk Eendrag opgerig word. Inwoners van Greylingstraat én Eendragstraat, wat aan die kerk grens, beweer die selfoonsein-toring wat bykans 10 jaar gelede daar opgerig is, het tot ernstige siektetoestande gelei. Carl Davis, ’n sakeman én voorloper in die veldtog teen die oprigting van nóg ’n toring sê inwoners is bekommerd oor gesondheidsgevare wat selfoonseintorings mag inhou. “Ek glo nie dit is heeltemal toevallig dat kanker in dié tyd by sowat ses mense in daardie gebied gediagnoseer is nie. Die Wêreld Gesondheidsorganisasie het reeds in 2012 bewys dat elektromagnetiese velde wel kanker kan veroorsaak,” het Davis gesê. Barend Greyling, wat naby die kerk woon en by wie prostaatkanker gediagnoseer is, het gesê, “Nou die dag is reuse-versterkers op die eerste toring aangebring. Nou wil hulle nóg ’n toring oprig wat meer gevare mag inhou.” By navraag aan die kerkraad het ds. André Lötter gesê daar is voldoende navorsing in verband met die aantygings oor die moontlike gesondheidsgevare van selfoontorings gedoen. “Gevolglik het ons ’n ingeligte besluit oor die voortgaan met ’n tweede toring geneem.

Hy verwys spesifiek na “wettig” omdat die openbare deelnameproses – met ’n baie kort tydperk om te reageer – eers gekom het nadat die inwoners navrae begin doen het. “Die sperdatum is eers Vrydag, maar die konstruksiewerk aan die nuwe toring gaan net voort!” het Davis ontsteld uitgewys. Hy voer ook aan dat gebrekkige wetgewing ten opsigte van die oprigting van selfoonseintorings deur selfoonmaatskappye uitgebuit word. “Gesien in die huidige swak ekonomiese klimaat bied die oprigting van selfoonseintorings by skole en kerke ’n gerieflike inkomste vir dié instansies. Ter selfde tyd is dit ook vir die selfoonmaatskappye gerieflik want die torings is binne ’n veilige omgewing. “Maar daar word nie omgegee vir die gesondheidsrisikos wat op die langtermyn die onmiddellike omgewing negatief kan beïnvloed nie. Dit kan ook eiendomspryse beïnvloed, want ek wil nie ’n huis koop wat langs so ’n toring is nie,” het Davis gesê. Volgens Davis is daar gerugte dat daar ook by NGK Dagbreek ’n selfoonseintoring aangebring gaan word. (Sien foto van NGK Eendrag op p. 5)

Church organ workshop and concert The Southern African Church Organists Society (SAKOV) presents an organ concert, in the Dutch Reformed Church Uitenhage De Mist on Friday 19 September at 19:00. Well-known Stellenbosch organist Winand Grundling will play works by Bach, Boëllmann, Elgar and Daquin – and improvis ation. Grundling completed his schooling at Brandwag High School in Uitenhage and obtained a BMus degree from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. He began his organ studies under Colin Campbell in 2002 and has since given organ recitals on national and international level. On national level, Winand has won numerous prestige competitions and prizes. He currently is the organist of the Dutch Reformed

Church Stellenbosch-Welgelegen and is an accompanist for various choirs and South African artists. His debut CD, Toccata!, was launched in 2009. In 2012, he released his second album, 14 Stations of the Cross, at the KKNK. Winand plans to enrol for an MMus (Performance) degree next year at Stellenbosch University under the guidance of Mario Nell. The Saturday morning at 08:30 a workshop for organists will be held at the De Mist Dutch Reformed Church, Uitenhage. The workshop will be led by Winand Grundling and Devandré Boonzaaier. Op dié dag kan die tehuis besigtig word en sal besoekers ingelig word oor addisionele dienste van die tehuis wat onder andere insluit spyseniering, tuisversorging, saalverhuring en die aflewering van maaltye. Aandmymering bedryf ook ’n dienssentrum, Ithemba Eltisha, Lede van dié sentrum het vanjaar twee trofeë gewen by die ACVV Spele en vir die Golden Games deurgedring na die nasionale uitdunne wat hierdie maand in Nelspruit gehou word. Alzheimer versorging & studente Aandmymering het ook ’n vleuel waar inwoners met Alzheimer-siekte en dimensie, daagliks gestimuleer word deur kreatiewe

Gamble Street alumni family day Gamble Street Alumni will be hosting a Family Day on Saturday, 20 at the Uitenhage sports grounds from 10:00 to 15:00. The purpose of this event is for the families of all alumni and friends to meet, rekindle old friendships and to enjoy sport matches between the young and not-soyoung. This will be a fun filled day for parents and children alike. Jumping castles, face painting, and lots more entertainment will be available for all. A Spit-braai at R75 per person will be available. The competition booklet will also be drawn on the day. A limited number of competition tickets are available. The prizes include a flat screen television, digital Wifi tablet, and an overnight stay for two, including breakfast at a five star hotel in Plettenberg Bay. This event will be part of the Despatch Road Race, held on September 27th and organised by Despatch Athletics Club with the start and finish points at Despatch Superspar. Helgard Potgieter, chairperson of the Despatch Athletics Club, said the Street Mile is a new edition added to road race and fun run, and is growing in its popularity. “It is especially exciting for spectators as participants are running at a fast pace down Holland Street. This is also the only Street Mile in the Eastern Cape. We are inviting schools also to participate and invite the public to as spectators come and experience the adrenaline,”said Potgieter. The Despatch Road Race, with Despatch Supersport as main sponsor, incorporates a

5km fun run (07:15) sponsored by Klinicare Despatch, 10km road race (07:00) and the Streetmile (08:30). Entry forms are available from Brocketts Sports, Despatch Superspar and Klinicare Despatch or on the morning of the race at Despatch Superspar from 05:30.
