he Valley Animal Friends (VAF) is an organisation that helps to sterilise cats and dogs belonging to previously disadvantaged people who live in the Sundays River Valley area. “The Uitenhage Veterinary Hospital is very involved in helping us with these sterilisations, headed up by Dr Riaan Mulder and his partners, Dr Pauline Swartz and Dr Melanie who give of their time to help the community,” said Robyn Morris of Valley Animal Friends. They are also assisted with sick, needy and neglected animals by the very helpful Uitenhage SPCA officers, Koos Kroukamp and Deon Combrinck. “We are passionate regarding this cause. To keep it going we need to continuously raise funds and appeal for donations.” During 2012 VAF has sterilised 88 dogs and cats, assisted with dipping and deworming of 690 animals and also euthenased 65 dogs and cats. On Sunday the Valley Animal Friends is hosting a Breakfast Run in Sunland at 09:00 at Cosmos Cuisine Restaurant. Breakfast will be served at R60 per person (R10 will be towards VAF). “We would like to invite and encourage all the biking clubs in the Uitenhage and Despatch areas to please join us for this Breakfast Run. he seventh Sunridge Village Family road race will be held on Saturday, 11th May at 07:00. Organised by the PE Amateur Athletic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, this event promises to be the greatest to date. There will once again be hampers, lucky draws and some major prizes including a R2 500 shopping experience from Sunridge SuperSpar, a major sponsor of the event. The run/walk caters for the whole family with distances of both 5km and 10km. Other
fun category prizes include first Family Home, Parent and Pram, Dad and Dog (1 dog per entry) and Mom and Tot. Festivities kick off on Friday 10th May at 16:30 with pre-registration in the mall (same place as last year). Pre-entries can be made locally at Despatch Spar and Myburg’s Sports in Uitenhage. Entry forms can also be downloaded from www.sunridgevillage.co.za, but remember pre-enter at Sunridge Village to qualify for a T/shirt.

Suspect arrested with stolen goods Uitenhage police members have arrested a 26-year-old suspect who was in possession of stolen goods worth more than R12 000. “Police arrested the suspect and detained him in connection with the burglary at a business in Caledon Street that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 16 April 2013. The suspect was arrested at his home in Market Street,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart.
The Station Commander of SAPS Uitenhage, Brigadier Leonie Bentley, commended the community and the members and said, “It is apparent to all of us that the police alone cannot win the fight against crime. Criminals do not live in isolation from communities. Therefore there is a need to strengthen our partnership with the communities and by doing this we will eradicate crime in our area.”

Police invite public to golf day The South African Police Service in Uitenhage will be hosting a golf day at the Uitenhage Golf Club on the 24th of August 2013. “This event will be the ideal opportunity for businesses and organisations to contribute towards this relationship building initiative in order to encourage a partnership between the police and the local community,” said Colonel Andre Swart. As the police are a non-profitable organisation, an appeal is made for assisting them by sponsoring a hole or providing a

Die sogenaamde Gaggle-toer het verlede Saterdag vertrek na van die wêreld se mooiste natuurgebiede, soos die Okavango Delta en Victoria-waterval. “Die naam van die toer kom van die Engelse versamelnaam vir ’n trop ganse. Ons wil net soos ganse oor die Okavango Delta sweef en in ons ligte tweesitplekvliegtuie die lugruim van Suider-Afrika deurkruis, alles ter bewusmaking van die Kankervereniging van Suid-Afrika (Kansa) en wat hy vir kankerlyers doen,” het Colin Dettmann, voorsitter van die Uitenhagevliegklub, vertel. Hy pak die vlug, ’n eerste van sy soort hier vir vlieëniers in ligte vliegtuie, in sy Jabiru aan saam met Lindie Nel. Dettmann het ook gesê die klub wil dit ’n jaarlikse instelling maak. “Die idee het begin toe ek en my swaer, Tommy Nel, besluit het om dié roete te vlieg en plekke te besoek wat ek in my lugmagjare aangedoen het. “Intussen is kanker by hom gediagnoseer en nou gaan ons die avontuur aanpak ter

bewusmaking van Kansa.” Elk van die 14 vliegtuie is met ’n opsporingstelsel toegerus wat gratis deur Baytrac geïnstalleer is. Sodoende kan belangstellendes die vlugroete volg en selfs sien teen watter spoed en hoogte hulle vlieg. “Dit is selfs moontlik om met dié stelsel te kyk na die vorige dae se roetes en hoe die vlieëniers dit voltooi het,” het Tim Butcher van Baytrac gesê. Volgens Dettmann is dit redelik gevaarlik om in sekere gebiede te vlieg omdat daar geen lugbeheer is nie. Die opsporingstelsel bring dus ’n mate van gemoedsrus. “Ons wil dit uitsluitlik vir ligte tweesitplekvliegtuie hou, want dit maak die vlug interessant en meer avontuurlik,” het Dettmann gesê. Sue Janse van Rensburg, besturende direkteur van Kansa, het gesê: “Ons is baie trots om met hierdie opwindende bewusmakingsveldtog geassosieer te word. Measles and polio campaign There is an increase in cases of measles and therefore the Department of Health in the Eastern Cape is embarking on an immunisation campaign which started last Thursday and will continue until 17th May. “South Africa had more cases of measles in the years 2009 and 2010 than the years before. If this disease is not controlled it may cause serious illnesses like blindness, brain damage and even death,” said Mrs N. Mahaluba, health
promotion co-ordinator of the Department of Health’s sub-district Uitenhage/ Despatch. During the aforementioned period the Department will visit various health facilities, communities, schools and creches to give polio drops and measles vaccine to children under the age of five years. Water leak deteriorates property HEILIE COMBRINCK An unsolved water leak is resulting in the devaluation of a property as dampness is deteriorating walls, wooden floors as well as the foundation of a house in Fairbridge Heights, Uitenhage. “I first noted the dampness during October last year and it is shocking to see the structural damage done since then to my property,” said Prelene Smith from Aandblom Street. “I must give credit to the customer care centre insofar as that each time I have reported the water leak, they do send people to attend to the problem, but it does not get fixed. The water has been tested and identified as municipal water leaking from somewhere uphill.” The water leak has apparently resulted in the collapsing of Smith’s stoep surface, which has been repaired by municipal contractors.

According to Smith, municipal officials told her that they knew about the water leak, but as a result of outdated equipment could not detect the exact spot. Councillor Ann-Marie Terblanche said: “This is no excuse as nowadays there are infrared scanning technology devices which can detect water leaks spot-on.
