he Port Elizabeth based centre taking care of sick and injured African Penguins is in a critical situation as a result of high running costs. The South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) is trying to overcome the daily electricity consumption which is extremely high, by “going green” through the installation of solar panels. “A total of 120 solar panel kits are needed to go off the electricity grid completely and this will enable the centre to be self sufficient,” said Reuann Smith from Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. The islands of Algoa Bay are home to 35 of the 91 recorded Southern African seabird species, of which six of the 14 resident species breed in this area. “Approximately half of the world’s population of Cape gannets and the endangered African penguin live here. It is expected that at the current rate of decline in the population, the African penguin may disappear in less than 5 years time. “The deepwater harbour at Coega has added a new threat to the birds as it is situated right next to St Croix

Island, which is now the largest breeding colony of the penguin. It costs approximately R1 000 to rehabilitate a single bird after incidental oiling,” said Smith. SAMREC is therefore starting a “go green” campaign which allows companies and individuals to sponsor solar panels kits valued at R5 000 per kit in exchange for various marketing opportunities. Libby Sharwood of SAMREC advised, “Our monthly electricity account is astronomical and probably equal to that of six households together. We would appreciate any offer, advice or sponsorships from any person or company that would like to see us sustain the important work done by SAMREC.” According to SAMREC, since their rehabilitation efforts started, many birds, especially the endangered African Penguin, have been successfully rescued, treated and returned to the wild. )NMBT is assisting in supporting SAMREC to lobby for funds and support to keep the doors of this valuable facility and tourist attraction open. Cycle tour leaves positive trails in Addo Mountain bikers can look forward to riding eco-friendly, hand-cut trails in one of the world’s most biologically diverse areas when they sign up for the forthcoming cycle tour in Addo on February 1. The mountain biking segment of The Herald VW Cycle Tour cycle tour not only exposes riders to some of the area’s natural wonders but also provides pathways to development by creating trail-building jobs for local labourers. According to race director Brad Jackson of Mountain Events, participants should expect “something new and exciting” from the newly skilled route builders. “We believe that a good mountain bike race is all about good quality trails,” said Jackson. “In collaboration with local landowners, we have worked on building some of the best dedicated mountain bike single tracks in the country.” At Hayterdale Trails, four labourers are employed on a permanent basis, while the development team expands to as many as eight workers from time to time, as needed. “Aside from the fact that sustainable jobs have been created, these guys have truly become masters at trail building and have developed the skills to build proper single tracks while adhering to sound environmental principles.” As a result of the mostly inaccessible nature of the terrain, the majority of the work is done manually without the use of heavy machinery. Jackson said the head of the trail-building crew, Zolile Pikoli, would showcase his signature trail section, aptly named Zorr’s Rollercoaster, for the first time in this year’s race.

He said conserving the environment and ensuring it remained unharmed during events such as the cycle tour was extremely important as Addo encompassed five of the country’s seven biomes. Jackson said riders would have the opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of the region first-hand. “The cycle tour mountain bike routes start among citrus orchards in the Sundays River Valley and extend to the Zuurberg mountain range and back, traversing a diverse range of vegetation along the way. The mountain bike events comprise the 80km Extreme, 60km Adventure and 30km Powerade Leisure Challenge. The 5km Kiddies’ Challenge and 500m Toddler’s Dash, also sponsored by Powerade, complete the line-up. Registration takes place on Friday, January 31, at The Boardwalk, with late registration for the mountain bike events continuing on the Saturday at the Addo Polo Club.

Order prevents recurrence of domestic violence THE South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape would like to make the public aware about the protection orders and how to access them. A protection order aims to prevent the recurrence of domestic violence or sexual harassment by stating what conduct the alleged offender (respondent) must refrain from doing. As long the person complies with the protection order, the complainant will be safe. If the respondent contravenes any stipulation of the protection order, the person may be arrested. Once a protection order is granted it is enforceable throughout the country. The procedure to apply for a protection order is as follows: ) The complainant must make an affidavit and complete an application form at a police station. Supporting affidavits by persons who have knowledge of the matter in question may accompany the application. ) These documents must be handed to the clerk of the nearest court. The court will consider the application immediately. ) The application for a protection order is not limited to the complainant. An application for a protection order may be brought on behalf of the complainant by any other person who has an interest in the well-being of the complainant. This includes a counsellor, health service provider, social worker, teacher or a member of the SAPS. ) If the court is satisfied that there is sufficient evidence that the suspect is committing or has committed an act of domestic violence/harassment and unnecessary hardship may be suffered by the complainant as a result of the act, the court will issue an interim protection order against the respondent.

) The application for an interim protection order may be brought at any time and not only during office hours or on court days. ) The purpose of this interim protection order is to provide immediate protection to the complainant. ) The interim protection order has no force or effect until it has been served on the respondent. ) The court is also required to issue a suspended warrant of arrest for the respondent. A breach of the protection order requires that the respondent be arrested by the police immediately. ) The interim protection order is not a final order from the court, but a temporary order which grants immediate relief until the return date (the date on which the applicant and the respondent, after being given due notice, are to appear before court to have the protection order made a final order). On this return date, the respondent is afforded the opportunity to present to the court reasons why the protection order should not be made final. ) If the respondent does not appear in court on the return date, but the court is satisfied that proper service has been affected on the respondent and that there is sufficient evidence that the respondent has committed or is committing an act of domestic violence/ sexual harassment, the court may make a final order on the return date. The protection order will prevent the respondent from ) Committing any specified act of domestic violence /sexual harassment; ) Entering the joint residence or to enter a specific part of the residence; ) Entering the victim’s residence if they are not living together; ) Entering the victim’s place of employment/office;

Na afloop van die sitrusseisoen in Kirkwood trek hulle die bus haar “vakansierokkie” aan. Die sitplekke word uitgehaal en die “statige dame” begin stadig maar seker vorm aanneem, amper soos iemand wat vir ’n oormaaksessie gaan. Four new nature reserves approved in EC E

astern Cape Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism MEC Mcebisi Jonas has approved the declaration of the Lambasi Nature Reserve in the Mhlontlo Local Municipality and three others across the province in addition to one protected area. Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) CEO Luxolo Rubushe has given notice of the intention to declare the four areas as nature reserves and one as a protected area in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act of 2003. The intention to declare the reserves was published in the provincial gazette of December 13, providing 60 days for people to make representations or submit objections to the proposals. Jonas says that proclamation of the Lambasi Nature Reserve, measuring some 8 810 hectares, with management being assigned to the Lambasi Community Property Association, will provide a significant supplement to the income of the people of the area. Jonas points out that the Eastern Cape is a predominantly rural province with a relatively low level of economic activity, adding that environmental management is the “catalyst” that can provide empowerment opportunities that will in turn “propel economic development”. He says the involvement of the local

communities in the planning of the nature reserve has ensured local ownership and has “paved the way for the declaration of the area as a reserve which will have huge potential to change the economic landscape with tourism as the key driver”. The protected area is in the Jansenville region and will be known as the Noorsveld Protected Environment with management of the reserve assigned to the Noorsveld Protected Environment Landowners Association. One of the three proposed private nature reserves is in Nelson Mandela Bay and forms part of the Royalston development that consists of 310 residential properties in five villages, a hotel, frail care centre, wildlife and education centre, dog walking park and wedding and conference centre. Some 717 hectares of the Royalston development will be nature reserve. A second proposed nature reserve is in the Uniondale area that will be known as the Kromme Riviers Hoogte Nature Reserve. The reserve covers approximately 442 hectares. The fourth, the Baviaanskloof Hartland Nature Reserve, is in the Willowmore district in the extreme west of the province, with authority for managing the reserve to be handed to the still to be constituted Baviaanskloof Hartland Landowners Association. Popular ocean racing returns T

he popular Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing Series returns to Hobie Beach this Sunday for round 6 with hundreds of swimmers, runners and kids expected to take part. Billed as Africa’s largest family beach lifestyle event, the Series already has over 1 000 registered participants across the five events which are on offer each race day. As the Ocean Racing Series moves into the second half of Season 9, the focus for the top participants moves to the overall standings for the remaining 6 race days. Participants accummulate points based on positions at each round with their top 8 finishes out of a possible 11 races counting. Participants have to complete at least 6 race days in order to qualify for the overall standings. Sixteen year old Daniel Jones has been unstoppable this season and with 5 wins out of 5 races this he is the clear leader in the Dischem 1km Ocean Swim. In the girls’ division Kirsten Marriott leads. In the Dischem 2km Ocean Swim, 18 year old Wayne Jones leads from older brother Jason whilst Liza Bright heads the ladies’ category. In the Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run it’s 16 year old Keegan Cooke leading the series with 12 year old Megan Snyman leading the ladies’ division. Staying on the beach, Juan Slabbert and Mile Vermaak head the Swirlers 5km Beach Walk. Within the 4 age group categories of the popular Crickley Dairy Kids 1km Beach Run, it’s Chad Brown and Tayla Pretorius who are leading the 6 years and under category, Josh Pretorius and Jodi Wilson lead the 7-8 year category, Zack Serfontein and Tara Sacke the 9 - 10 year category whilst Rayhaan Botha and

90th River Mile awaits

The 90th SPAR River Mile takes place next month and a festival of sporting events and activities are being planned over the weekend of the 15th and 16th February on the Sundays River. Started in 1924 in the picturesque village of Redhouse, the River Mile is Africa’s oldest open water swimming event and one of the oldest 5 swimming races in the world and has become one of those ‘must-do’ events in the Eastern Cape. Since 2006 the attendance at the River Mile has increased three fold and this is largely as a result of SPAR Eastern Cape’s involvement as the naming partner. Key partners to SPAR for the festival are ADT, aQuellé, Cerebos, Istream brand management, Tavcor and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. Activities start with Off-Road Saturday which sees the Tavcor Volkswagen Family 5km Fun Run, a off-road cycle race, a family half-mile and the disabled and wetsuit mile events. The River Mile ‘Triathlon’ will comprise of the 5km fun run, the cycle and the family half mile. There will be various events for kids.
