e do not donate money. We donate musical instruments and equipment to leave behind a legacy of teaching children to play and enjoy music.” This is what the Clement Music Foundation has at heart said John van Vuuren, a passionate musician and member of the foundation. Rock the Hage is the showside of this foundation, through which the musicians raise funds to support the different projects. “We also assist in setting up music rooms where the children can be taught music. The foundation is a nonprofit organisation which has the aim of promoting music at school level, the general public or church groups. “Also to help the disadvantaged in the Uitenhage area, no matter of which race,” said Van Vuuren. Kim Clement, after whom the foundation is named, originated from Uitenhage and went to school at Muir College. He is a brilliant musician and an inspiration for all the good work he does to assist those who seek help. “Riebeek College is our first project and the amount of interest shown by the pupils of Riebeek was overwhelming.” The Clement Music Foundation main members are John van Vuuren, John Astbury, Roger Sellick, Alan Godwin and David Clement. Honorary members include Anton Calitz and Gene Smith. ver 8 800 people have experienced a tour of Volkswagen Group South Africa’s factory in Uitenhage in comfort and style over the past year The Volkswagen FactoryTour vehicle allows visitors to rest their feet, sit back and enjoy the ride whilst witnessing the intricate manufacturing process of the current bestselling passenger cars in South Africa, Polo Vivo and Polo. “The introduction of the FactoryTour vehicle has been helpful in speeding up the factory tours especially with the senior citizens who sometimes struggle to walk around the factory,” explained AutoPavilion manager Buyile Gqubule.

The culprit who broke into the Despatch Post Office and stole or damaged the content of more than 100 packages has been sent to jail. “The 21-year-old Elliot Micheals was sentenced to an effective two years and six months imprisonment at the Uitenhage Magistrates’ Court on a charge of housebreaking and theft,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The incident occurred at the Despatch Post Office earlier this year during March. Micheals was arrested by the investigating officer, D/WO Mark Bodill within a few weeks after a case was reported to the Despatch police. The Cluster Commander of Uitenhage, Brigadier Phillip Salukazana commended D/WO Bodill for the effective and professional manner in which he conducted his investigation and congratulated him on a job well done.

Gestremde wil praktyk vir trauma berading vestig VERSLAGGEWER Die effek wat gestremdheid op ’n gestremde se menswees het is ’n onderwerp wat Alicia Deyzel van Uitenhage gemaklik oor praat, selfs op nasionale konferensies. Alicia is serebraal gestrem en loop met behulp van ‘n loopraam. Sy het aan Hoërskool Kaap Recife gematrikuleer en daarna haar studies voortgesit en ’n kursus in Menslike Hulpbronbestuur voltooi. Na voltooiing van
haar internskap by Kromberg & Schubert op Uitenhage, het sy ‘n permanente betrekking aanvaar by dié maatskappy se verkoopsafdeling en later by kwaliteitsbeheer. “In hierdie pos moes ek op die fabrieksvloer werk om kwaliteitsbeheer te doen, leiding en waar nodig ook opleiding gee,” sê Alicia wat tans by Cuyler Service Centre werksaam is. Ten spyte van ‘n druk werksprogram het sy haar studies voortgesit om haar droom na te volg. Alicia het onlangs ‘n diploma ontvang aan die Universiteit van Pretoria vir die
voltooiing van ’n kursus in Christelike Nooden Traumaberading. “Hierdie is die eerste stap na die verwesenliking van my ideaal om ’n praktyk vir nooden traumaberading te vestig. “Ek beplan om my studies in hierdie rigting voort te sit.” Alicia beywer haar voortdurend om die welstand en aanvaarding van gestremdes in hulle gemeenskappe te bevorder. Sy het vir ‘n aantal jaar op die National Women’s Forum gedien waar sy gestremdes van Suid-Afrika

Beskadigde kerktoring hou die gemeente se oë na bo HEILIE COMBRINCK

y ’n kerk op Despatch slaan van die gemeentelede hul oë na bo en sny dan ’n lyn tot in die veiligheid van die kerk se binneruim. Want hoe gemaak as ’n kerktoring beskadig is, maar geen hyser of brandweerleer is hoog genoeg om vas te stel of die tippie van die toring nog staan nie? Anton Botha, voorsitter van die NG kerk Retief se eiendomskomitee, meen opinies verskil. “Van die gemeentelede is bekommerd dat die beskadigde toring se punt kan afval. Ander sê dit sal nie gebeur nie. Maar as ’n mens die kans vat . . . ” Volgens Botha is daar gerugte dat manne wat “gekuier” het jare gelede met ’n .303-geweer vanaf die hoogtetjie aan die anderkant van die dorp na die toring geskiet het. Die toring is ook glo verskeie kere oor die afgelope 50 jaar deur weerlig getref. Op die punt van die toring, onder ’n metaalplaat, het ’n gedeelte van die betonkonstruksie afgeval. Nou toring die konstruksie 60 m die hemele in. Die brandweer se leer strek ’n skamele 30 m hoog. Dié hogere toring is nou ’n doring in die vlees. “Ons kan nie inspeksie doen waar herstelwerk nodig is nie. Ons het al gedink om steierwerk op te rig, maar dit sal die kerk sowat R100 000 kos sónder herstelkoste. Die kerkraad het selfs oorweeg om die toring af te breek, maar dit gaan nóg meer kos,” volgens Botha. Die gemeente samel nou al ’n geruime tyd geld in om die saak as’t ware “op die spits” te dryf. “Ons benodig plaaslike hulp van boukonstruksiemaatskappye wat toerusting het om ons by te staan in die inspeksie van die boonste deel van die kerktoring.” Intussen hou gemeentelede die toring dop en hoop daar kom uitkoms vir die eiedomskomitee om ’n hoër hyser te bekom. )Plaaslike konstruksiemaatskappye wat die eiendomskomitee van die Retief-gemeente kan bystaan word versoek om Anton Botha te bel by 0083 246 3323.

he 13th annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees is officially the country’s largest festival hosted in a small town. Themed “Celebrating becoming a teenager” in 2014, the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees is certain to attract more than 50 000 visitors, once again, to the Sundays River Valley, as it presents a jam-packed programme that offers something for everyone to enjoy. This year festival-goers can look forward to a line-up of award-winning artists and shows at the Wildsfees, which takes place from June 27 to June 29.
Aerobatics & extreme sports Off the stage, the “wild” action will include: an aerobatic display by four-time South African aerobatic champion Patrick Davidson; multi award-winning chef JodiAnn Pearton; 11-time South African trials champion “one wheel” Brent le Riche with his Extreme Motorcycle Trials Show, and champion dogs and cats. Skaapkop Langtafel The festival itself will be vying for a world record award – by having 430 foodies enjoying traditional “skaapkop” (sheeps’ heads) at the same table and at the same time. Popular artists Popular artists to be seen in action on the largest entertainment stage in the Eastern Cape, include Karlien van Jaarsveld, Andriette Norman, Bobby van Jaarsveld,
Riana Nel, Jay, Elvis Blue, Bok van Blerk, Parlotones, Mango Groove, Emo Adams and Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels. Stage productions In addition, the multi awardwinning play Oskar en die Pienk Tannie, with Sandra Prinsloo in the lead role, is being brought to the Eastern Cape by the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees. The play will be staged in the Kirkwood High School hall on Saturday, June 28. And, for something a little “wilder,” the Wildsfees also features burlesque for the first time with the “Tipsy Gypsy” stage show. Kids’ entertainment A new addition to the three-day programme is the Algoa FM/CocaCola Songololo Stretch, which will host live entertainment through the day for children. Touch alpacas and try knitting for charity Visitors to the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees will be able to see how two of the finest natural fibres are produced and transformed into warm and soft high-fashion items. They will be able to touch both alpacas and angora goats and then stroll through an expo of the products produced from their hair. At the Mohair South Africa stand visitors will also be able to help knit mittens and scarves for charity – just by riding a bicycle which powers a knitting machine. The Mohair stall will also be showcasing the work of Mohair South Africa bursary program students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), who will be attending the festival. Meeting an alpaca will be a first for many visitors. Their hair is considered to be one of the finest animal fibres on the planet. It has a partly hollow fibre (mi-
croscopic air pockets in the fibre shaft) giving the finished garment wonderful insulation. Alpacas come in 22 natural colours and shades of fibre. Helderstroom alpacas will have hand-knitted products made from hand-spun yarn at the Wildsfees. Try your hand at knitting for charity Stall holder and sponsor, Mohair South Africa, will be giving back to the local Eastern Cape underprivileged play schools through a project running at the Wildsfees. Scarfs will be knitted continuously during the three day long festival. Anyone attending the thirteenth annual Wildsfees is allowed to participate and “try your hand at knitting” at the Mohair knitting corner. The knitted pieces will then be turned into mittens and scarves for the various play schools to help children keep their hands and necks warm during the icy cold winters.

Chef to tantalise the taste buds Multi award-winning chef and author Jodi-Ann Pearton will be cooking up a storm in conjunction with the Eastern Cape Red Meat Producers Organisation and Deli Spices at the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees. She will be showing festival goers how to cook quick and easy meaty meals flavoured by spices supplied by the Port Elizabeth-based company. In 2005, Jodi-Ann was selected by the South African Chefs Association to join the National Culinary Team (Team SA). She has since gone on to receive awards in all three categories of South African chef of the year, including the coveted By Invitation Only competition, Africa’s most prestigious award. Jodi has also won Global chef Africa. Her motto is to “Throw your soul into your cooking, food is about love, passion, perseverance and appreciation and the more you give the better it gets.” In 2008 Jodi-Ann founded The Food Design Agency, which specialises in food styling, product development, high end functions, celebrity cheffing and skills upliftment. In the same year she took the title of South African chef of the year as well as receiving South African colours for cheffing. For the first time ever Jodi-Ann will be spicing things up at this year’s Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees. She will be in the festival’s Absa Talk Tent from two on the Friday afternoon, and 11 on Saturday. Veiling van skaars wildsoorte lok belangstelling “
Die groot verskeidenheid skaars diere wat op die Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees opgeveil gaan word, lok ongekende belangstelling,” vertel Johan Swart, die organiseerder. Diere wat die meeste belangstelling lok, is sowat 30 gesonde wilde buffels van die Addo Olifant Nasionale Park. Ander ongewone spesies wat algaande meer gewild raak, sal ook op die veiling te vinde wees, soos die witmaan- Burchellsebras wat vir die eerste keer op ’n wildveiling te koop gaan wees. Die familie van vyf kom van die Royalston-wildplaas in Port Elizabeth. Daar is ook groot belangstelling in Top Deck, ’n skaars saalrug-blesbok.
Die opening van die grens vir die vervoer van wild tussen Suid-Afrika en Namibië, is ook ’n groot hupstoot vir die veiling. Die gevolg is hernude belangstelling van Namibiese wildboere in njalas (basterkoedoes) en bontebok. Meer as 600 diere sal onder die hamer kom. Voornemende bieërs kan voor die veiling na meeste van die beste wild in die krale gaan kyk. Two gold medals to Muir choir The Muir College Boy’s High School Choir participated in the Despatch Kunsfees and the ATKV Applous choir competition. In each event they were awarded a gold certificate (80%-100%). As a result of these achievements they have been invited to perform at the ATKV Applous choir competition in Pretoria to be held from 30 July – 2 August 2014. This is a prestige achievement as only two schools from the Eastern Cape will participate in this competition. The choir is trained and directed by Annabel van der Merwe.
Despatch Preparatory choir wins gold A+ Despatch Preparatory competed in the Despatch Kunsfees and the school choir achieved a gold A+ in the junior choir division. The group recitation along with all the individual recitations also received golds. The school’s solo singers achieved 10 golds and one silver and in the art division the 13 entries received numerous awards amongst them with one gold award. The school is very proud of its learners’ results.

icola McEwan, senior head girl of Riebeek College Girls’ High School, achieved a brilliant 18th place in the nationwide English Olympiad literary competition. Deputy head girl, Micaela White, was placed among the top 100. She was placed 9th last year. Both girls were awarded tuition bursaries to Rhodes University. “Rhodes is Nicola’s University of choice, where she will read for a degree in Anthropology and Politics. Micaela’s plans include studying medicine at the University of Stellenbosch,” said Marilyn Woods, Principal of Riebeek College Girls’ High School. “A successful result in the English Olympiad is a prestige jewel in the crown of accomplishments of any high school learner.” The top 50 candidates are awarded a tui-
tion bursary to Rhodes University. Each of the top three wins a cash prize of R25 000 and the top 15 are invited to attend the National Schools’ Festival as guests of The Grahamstown Foundation. This year the anthology’s title and theme was “Life’s a Laugh”. This collection of dramatic works and extracts of Shakespeare’s comedies required learners to question the nature of humour in drama, its quality and profundity. The only handicap was the limit placed on the length of the responses. ‘Christmas in July’ at U’hage market The Women In Business will have its next Uitenhage Market day on Sunday, 6th July and it will be themed “Christmas in July”. All stallholders are requested to decorate stalls with Christmas decorations as a prize will be given to the best decorated stall. Stallholders are also urged to bring along used or new toys as donations to a toy run on the same day to the benefit of local orphans. “We will also run a ‘wish tree’ on the day. Stallholders has recommend products that they sell on the market that will be beneficial to the organisations. “We will then hang a tag on our tree with the products and visitors can buy it with the aim to donate it to the specific organisation,” said Lilly de Jongh from Women In Business.

Gamble reclaims Investec relay title MICHAEL ZOETMULDER
I
n absolutely perfect conditions the five man relay team from Gamble Pharmacy Uitenhage broke the course record of the Investec Night Relay by over four minutes to reclaim
the title at Round 2. In the idyllic settings of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, close to 100 corporate and social teams took to the streets of Sydenham in the second of four race nights of the Relay. Defending champions, Gamble Pharmacy,
finished the 25km course in a very fast 1 hour 16 minutes from a spirited Transnet team who were the victors at Round 1 last month. The Flying Sages from Sage VIP claimed third spot for the second month in a row. Conditions were absolutely ideal for running and this resulted in the top two teams improving the course record which was set last month. In the ladies category the team from Aquabear Ladies won and in the mixed running category, Transnet Lions team won for the

here is less than a month left till the start of the annual Volkswagen Rally on Friday and Saturday, 11 and 12 July. Rally fans will see South Africa’s best rally talent tackling one of the most popular events on the national rally calendar, aiming at a new finish line at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “There are some changes to the layout of the rally this year,” says route organiser Joe Fourie. “The Volkswagen Rally will start on a brand new stage on Friday and end on a new stage on Saturday afternoon – there is also a Super Special stage complete with bridge and crossover to make things even more exciting.” The traditional start at AutoPavilion in Uitenhage, right at Volkswagen South Afri-

ca’s main gate, remains the best place to meet the teams, take photos and get autographs before the midday start on Friday. It is from this point that the Volkswagen Rally will head to stage one opposite the Uitenhage Hospital on Mission Road. The final two stages of day one on the Volkswagen Rally sees the field leave the gravel behind and head for Jeffreys Bay where two stages take place – at Fountains Mall and in the city centre. These stages are targeted specifically at spectators, bringing the action right into town. After an overnight stop at Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway, the Volkswagen Rally field will complete two stages in this area before heading out to Longmore for the second day of gravel action in the forest. The big finish for the Volkswagen Rally this year takes place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium where the final stage will be run on the access roads within the stadium area.
