These words made Joe Fredericks (33) stay in the queue for an audition of SA’s Got Talent, after he phoned home telling his wife Andrea, it was too cold, he was heading back! “Out of about 7 000 hopefuls on that icy cold Jozi morning I made it through to the top 18. That’s quite an achievement, I believe,” said Joe Fredericks, who was born and raised in the place where all the elephants are, Addo. Joe, an Assistant Accountant at Mercedes Benz Commercial Vehicles East Rand, was the first SA’s Got Talent semi-finalist with the highest public votes, who automatically made it through to the finale which will will be broadcast live this Sunday on e.tv at 18:05. “I discovered that I had talent during a Christmas play in Sub A (Grade 1) when my late music teacher Mr Potgieter asked me to sing ‘Stille Nag’. “I must say I nailed it with my soprano
voice at that time (1988),” said Joe. He matriculated at Gamble Street Secondary School in Uitenhage where he became the Head Boy of the school and boarding house during 1999. I was involved with a lot of music projects and talent competitions and even won a talent search competition hosted by the Uitenhage Child & Family Welfare Society. “A special shout out to Patrick Lindoor or better known as ‘Tururu’. He is one of my role models and a great musician.” Joe is currently staying in Brakpan and he and his wife Andrea have two beautiful kids Jazmyn (8) and Nehemiah (5). “They are my everything and my biggest fans. I love them madly. I am so blessed and I believe that is only God’s favour. I am the third child of my late parents Mr and Mrs Fredericks. I miss them so much, but know they are smiling down on me right now,” said Joe in conclusion. )Joe urges the people from the Eastern Cape to watch the show on Sunday, 18:05 on e.tv and keep on voting. Brandwag at school of broadcasting - first for EC Algoa FM has partnered with its weekend lunch presenter Tové Kane to open the School of Broadcasting in the Eastern Cape. This is a first of its kind for the province, according to Kane. What is just as exciting is that Brandwag High School has started its own online streaming radio station to instil confidence in their learners when it comes to communication. Thus Algoa FM and Kane have decided to give a free course to one of the school’s learners.
“Some 25 years in the radio industry and related fields have given Tové an edge in understanding the art of communicating,” says Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann. Is jy seker, want die meeste motorbestuurders in die Nelson Mandela Metropool is salig onbewus daarvan dat hulle eintlik verkeerd ry? “Ironies is dit juis mense wat verkeerd ry wat arms swaai, handtekens wys of toet vir motorbestuurders wat wel hulle reëls ken en reg ry. En die sondebokke dink hulle is reg!” sê polisiewoordvoerder kapt. Johan Rheeder. As inwoner van Despatch het hy ’n byna onaangename onderonsie op die dorp ervaar by die enkelbaan-sirkel in HF Verwoerd-rylaan. ’n Vrouebestuurder het hom geskel omdat hy volgens haar “nie weet hoe ’n sirkel werk nie”. Sy was egter die skuldige wat nie die verkeersreëls ten opsigte van sirkels ken nie. “Ek was reeds in die sirkel toe sy van regs aangery kom. Sy was baie ontstoke en van mening dat ek voor haar ingery het. Dit is toe wat ek besluit, maar sy behoort te weet sy is die een wat nie weet hoe werk dit nie!” Kapt. Rheeder het die vrouebestuurder afgetrek en haar ingelig oor die reëls van
’n enkelbaan-sirkel, ook bekend as ’n minisirkel. Die UD Nuus het vroeër vanjaar ’n meningsopname op sy webblad gehou en die meeste lesers (60%) het aangedui dat hulle nie bewus is dat daar twee soorte sirkels is nie. Volgens Arrive Alive se dokumentasie oor verkeersreëls op Suid-Afrikaanse paaie, is daar enkelbaan-sirkels (mini-sirkels) en die groter dubbelbaan-sirkels. Op Despatch en Uitenhage is daar slegs enkelbaan-sirkels. Wie ry en wie bly? Arrive Alive dui aan dat enkelbaan-sirkels soos ’n vierrigting stop werk, behalwe dat dit nie nodig is om te stop nie, maar slegs om spoed te verminder. So, eerste daar kan eerste ry. By dubbelbaan-sirkels geld die reël dat aankomende voertuie van die regterkant af, moet ryvoorgang geniet. Enkelbaansirkels/Minisirkels: • Dié sirkels kom gewoonlik in residensiële areas voor en dien as ’n wyse om verkeer te kalmeer • Dit is uitkenbaar met die omgekeerde rooi en wit toegee-padteken waarop aangedui

Ratepayers report fraud to Madonsela REPORTER
T
he Nelson Mandela Bay Taxpayers’ Association in conjunction with local civil rights organisations submitted a report containing information regarding large-scale fraud in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality to Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela. It was submitted by vice-chairman of the local AfriForum branch, Kobus Gerber and the general advisor of Community Structures at the civil rights organisation, Pieter Rautenbach. The report stems from the R2 billion which was allocated to a bus transport system for the Metro after the 2010 Soccer World Cup Tournament. Taxis were removed from certain routes, and the Metro is still paying more than R6 500 per taxi per month in compensation to taxi owners, while no buses have been placed on the routes. The new buses and more than 60 taxis have been gathering dust in storage for years. More than one company were appointed to deal with the administration and payment of taxi owners. Hundreds of millions of rand were paid to consultants without the project being finalised. Investigations exposed that eight com-

As she grows, the challenges also become bigger.” An article published in the UD News during July 2014 regarding Elana who needs a Upsee walking harness, caught the heart of Round Table members and especially former member André Dorfling. He managed to get hold of a harness in Ireland. Members of Round Table and the Lions Club of Uitenhage then raised funds during their annual Melodrama with the purpose of importing the device for Elana. “The Irish manufacturer at first declined our request of purchase as they do not deal with South Africa,” said Dorfling. “I contacted my wife Charmaine’s cousin Kim Downey (néé Botha) to assist us. She grew up in Uitenhage and now lives in Dublin where she is a radiographer by profession. She immediately offered her assistance and we transferred the funds to her for ordering the harness. “As the manufacturer was aware of the fact that it was destined for Elana, they charged no VAT and posted it for free to Kim.” Kim’s parents, Chris and Patricia Botha were visiting her in Dublin and kind-heartedly offered to bring the walking harness to Uitenhage on their return to Port Elizabeth. “The end result of seeing Elana standing and walking for the first time and the smile on her face was priceless,” said Dorfling. The Upsee walking harness enables her to stand upright by being attached to her dad’s waist. It has specially engineered sandals that allow the adult and child to step simultaneously, enabling the disabled to walk. Elana attends Aurora Stimulation Centre for all the treatments she needs and also on a regular basis receives equine-assisted therapy (therapy through horse-riding) at the Bally na Fagh equestrian centre on the outskirts of Uitenhage.

This is thanks to the kindness of the community, expats living in Dublin and especially the men from Round Table 14 Uitenhage. “Elana now is such a happy child and you all made it possible. Thank you to each and every individual, organisation, club, company and also the Workshop Crew Motorcycle Club who all showed true interest in Elana and helped her to be able have a slightly more normal life - like a little girl should have,” said Elandré and Zena Hanekom, Elana’s parents. “We feel so blessed and are grateful as Elana enjoys the Upsee walking harness and can’t wait to take her daily stroll. Her legs still get tired quickly, but she is getting the feel of it and we are already struggling to get her out!” Elana was born on the 21st November 2008 at 32 weeks - 8 weeks premature. Everything went well, but then her lungs collapsed and as a result of oxygen shortage, she was left with brain damage and accordingly diagnosed with cerebral palsy. “Elana is unable to talk, walk, stand inde-

Day time burglaries in U’hage a concern HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage police have expressed their concern regarding the latest burglary crime wave at residential properties during day time. “We request the assistance of the community in our fight against crime and to be more punctual regarding safety measures as burglaries occur mainly during the day, when occupants have left for work,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The police would like to provide the following safety measures and request homeowners please to take this into consideration: *Ensure that all your apertures are protected by quality security products. *A good burglar alarm and deterrent security with armed response will help to protect your property. *Never leave the front door unlocked while you are in the back of the house. *Get involved in sector policing in your area and keep your neighbour’s contact numbers handy. *Do not leave garage doors open or unlocked when you are not at home. *Make provision for good outside lighting. Remember: outside lights that are on during the day draw the attention of thieves. *A watchdog is a good early warning system. Keep it visible as a deterrent but beyond the reach of strangers. *Write down the serial numbers of all electronic equipment and keep it in a safe place. *Store your firearm in a safe and keep proper control over the keys at all times. *When going away on holiday or a weekend, inform your neighbours, or make arrangements for your house to be watched and unusual activity to be noticed. Winners of garden competition to be announced on Saturday Uitenhage has always been known as the Garden Town, but over the years many things have caused people to lose interest in their gardens and this resulted in the town losing a lot of character. The Nursery is trying to revive the idea of good, old-fashioned gardening, pride in one’s own garden and setting the town ablaze with colour once again. “We aim to get folks interested again, to grow their own veggies and flowers and to take pride in their achievements. “This is also quite a challenge with a shortage of water, menacing winds and the intense heat during our summer period,” said Marissa Bradley from the Nursery, which is situated at 34 Graaff Reinet Road, Uitenhage. They have been running a competition
since August and folks from all over town have entered. The gardens have been judged and the winners will be announced at The Nursery on Saturday at 11:00. “We have wonderful sponsors on board and the excitement is real! We will also on Saturday announce plans for next year’s competition, which promises to be even bigger, with more categories and wonderful prizes to be won,” said Marissa.

New Life Choir back after 15 year absence The local gospel group, New Life Choir, will be back on stage this Sunday after a 15 year absence. The legendary and multi-talented musician, producer and talent developer, Pastor Georgen Miggels will be the choir director at the event. Test of fast and high speed endurance REPORTER
T
he Fountains Mall Rally is expected to be fast and a test of high speed endurance for drivers and navigators who are competing for points towards the end of the year R 50 000.00 prize, with 20 entries expected from as far as Kwazulu Natal, George, Cape Town and East London on Saturday. The starting point for the rally will be the Fountains Mall parking area which is a tight test of skill around the trees and islands. Rally cars will arrive from 08:00 for scrutineering
and documentation, with the first car entering the stage at 10:00 and the remaining field, at two minute intervals. The rally organisers, Algoa Rally Club, have catered for spectators to view the cars in action around the Fountains Mall parking area, followed by a drifting car display, and then will have time to follow the stages from the next gravel stages, starting just off the Humansdorp road towards Jubilee farms, and end at the Swart Rivier. The rally will move to the next stages from Kabeljous towards Zuurbron then Hankey along the Gamtoos Valley Road to Spekboom
Lapa for a lunch time service. Spekboom Lapa has a Farm restaurant where spectators can have lunch on the deck and see the rally cars performing in the valley of the Spekboom stage. The rally will repeat stages from Melon, Gamtoos and Zuurbron, returning to the mall mid afternoon to do another two stages at the Fountains Mall parking area. Magnetic Storm will set up PA system next to rally control, who will keep spectators informed on the rally progress.
